This volume completes the unhappy (forthe BEF) year of 1915, one described withgood reason as a year of disappointment. Its special interest is that it records the firstemployment of the Territorial and NewArmy divisions as complete formations ina major offensive and the first Britishemployment of gas. It describes the Battlesof Aubers Ridge, a disaster that cost11,500 casualties in a day; Festubert inwhich initial success could not beexploited; and Loos (including theHohenzollern Redoubt) in which we firstused gas, with mixed results, and in whichwe failed to make progress. Our casualtiesin the battle (25 September-16 October)amounted to nearly 50,400. Total battlelosses for 1915 were 285,000 comparedwith 90,000 for the five months of 1914.

Butwhat about the ‘Citizens’ corps, or the‘Fencibles’, the ‘Defence’ organisations, the ‘Village Guards’; those raised byshooting, cricket, golf or football clubs, orby railway companies, factories orathletes, businessmen or old schoolfellows? The answer, until now, hasregrettably been there is none.

A FULL RUN REPRINT OF

Sir Charles Oman’s

History of the Peninsular War PUBLISHED AT £28 PER VOLUME

WE HAVE the FULL run Of volumes

on offer at £17.99 per volume

Sir Charles Oman’s classic 7-volume History of the Peninsular War is one of the most important histories of the period ever written. The work of a brilliant historian and writer, it presents a large amount of detailed and valuable information in a very readable style.

Naval and Military Press have reprinted this valuable and timeless work in its entirety, faithful to the originals in all respects including 72 maps in colour in matt laminated soft bound volumes.

The 1807–1814 war in the Iberian Peninsula was one of the most significant and influential campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. Arising from Napoleon’s strategic necessity to impose his rule over Portugal and Spain, it evolved into a constant drain on his resources.

Oman’s 7-volume history of the campaign is an unrivalled and essential work. His extensive use and analysis of French, Spanish, Portuguese and British participants’ accounts and archival material, together with his own inspection of the battlefields, provides a comprehensive and balanced account of this most important episode in Napoleonic military history.

Sir Charles Oman’s 7-volume History of the Peninsular War complete and full run of all 7 volumes – £120.00. Complete Set Product code: 23856

The contents of the individual volumes are as follows: Volume I: 1807-1809 From The Treaty Of Fontainebleau To The Battle Of

Corunna The first part of Sir Charles Oman’s classic history provides the background to the war and its origins, and covers the early stages of the conflict. Introducing the subject and many of its main players, this volume recounts the French invasion of Portugal and the forcible deposition of the Spanish royal family, the beginning of Spanish popular resistance, the arrival of the British in the Iberian Peninsula, the first victories of Sir Arthur Wellesley (the future Duke of Wellington), Napoleon’s personal participation in the Spanish campaign, the French surrender at Baylen, and Sir John Moore’s terrible retreat, ending with his death in the hour of victory at the Battle of Corunna. ORDER NO: 25074 £28 £17.99 Volume II: January To September 1809 From The Battle Of Corunna To

The End Of The Talavera Campaign The fate of the Iberian Peninsula was very much in the balance during the period January–September 1809, when it seemed all too possible that Napoleon would achieve control over Spain and Portugal. This volume covers the continuing Spanish resistance to French occupation, the renewed French invasion of Portugal, and the return to the Peninsula and subsequent victories of Sir Arthur Wellesley, including his outmanoeuvring of the French from Oporto and culminating in the hard-fought victory at Talavera. ORDER NO: 25075 £28 £17.99

Volume III: September 1809 – December 1810, Ocaña, Cadiz, Bussaco, Torres

Vedras Covers the period from September 1809 to December 1810, when the French were consolidating their hold on Spain, crushing resistance and attempting to drive the British out of Portugal. However, they could not wholly defeat their opponents. The forces of the Spanish Regency Council, with British and Portuguese aid, held out against the siege of Cadiz. Wellington’s Allied army fought a model defensive battle at Bussaco, stalling the French drive into Portugal and enabling the British and Portuguese forces to retire to the shelter of the Torres Vedras fortifications. The Allies’ defence led to a strategic victory ultimately forcing the French to abandon their invasion of Portugal. ORDER NO: 25076 £28 £17.99 Volume IV: December 1810 – December 1811 Masséna's Retreat. Fuentes de

Oñoro, Albuera, Tarragona Covers the period during which Portugal was finally secured from the danger of French conquest. French successes in Spain continued, but the army under Masséna was forced finally to retreat from Portugal. The Allied offensive began to gather momentum, although their attempt to recapture Badajoz was unsuccessful. Beresford’s campaign on the southern frontier of Portugal included one of the hardest-fought actions of the era, the Battle of Albuera, and Graham’s victory at Barrosa aided the long-running defence of Cadiz against the French siege. Wellington saw victory at Fuentes de Oñoro, and smaller scale successes for the British Army also occurred at El Bodon, Sabugal and Arroyo dos Molinos. ORDER NO: 25077 £28 £17.99 Volume V: October 1811 – August 31, 1812 Valencia, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz,

Salamanca, Madrid Covers the period during which the outcome of the war was effectively decided by Wellington’s great advance from Portugal into Spain. The operations that took place at this time include the French campaigns of late 1811, with their conquest of Valencia and the siege of Tarifa; Wellington’s offensive, involving the terrible sieges and storming of the border fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz; and his great victory at Salamanca, which did much to decide the fate of the French hold on Spain. Other notable actions include that at Garcia Hernandez, and there were also smaller operations such as those on the east coast of Spain. Orders of battle, lists of strengths and casualties, and an account of Wellington’s intelligence officer and code-breaker Sir George Scovell, whose efforts contributed greatly to Wellington’s plans of campaign, are given in the appendices. ORDER NO: 25078 £28 £17.99 Volume VI: September 1, 1812 – August 5, 1813 The Siege of Burgos, the Retreat

from Burgos, the Campaign of Vittoria, the Battles of the Pyrenees Between the Autumn of 1812 and the late Summer of 1813 campaigning in the Peninsula took on anew aspect. From being a defence of Portugal and those parts of Spain not under French control, it became an effort by the British, Spanish and Portuguese forces aimed at driving the French out completely. Operations at the end of 1812 include the unsuccessful British siege of Burgos and the subsequent retreat; renewed campaigning on the east coast of Spain, including Murray’s actions around Tarragona; and the beginning of the final offensive against the French, including the battles of Roncesvalles, Maya and Sorauren. ORDER NO: 25079 £28 £17.99 Volume VII: August 1813 – April 14, 1814 The Capture of

St. Sebastian, Wellington's Invasion of France,

Battles of the Nivelle, the Nive,

Orthez and Toulouse The events covered in this volume include the British siege and capture of St. Sebastian; the final campaigning in eastern Spain; Wellington's invasion of France; and the last actions of the war in the Battle of Toulouse and the French sortie from Bayonne. This historyof the division starts before the war inEngland, and goes on to describeoperations in France in 1940. As with all good divisionalhistories, it is the story of men in battlethat counts, and this volume is noexception.

The ageingGeneral von Steinmetz made anoverzealous, unplanned move, leading the1st Army south from his position on theMoselle. Montenegro openedhostilities by declaring war on Turkey onOct. 8, 1912, and the other members of theleague followed suit 10 days later. TheBalkan League was soon victorious. InThrace, the Bulgarians defeated the mainOttoman forces, advancing to the outskirtsof Istanbul and laying siege to Edirne. The bloody battle of Lule Burgas – BunarHisar gets good coverage in this excellenttactical study that forms part of the “PallMall military series”. In terms of forcesengaged it was the largest battle fought inEurope between the end of the Franco-Prussian War and the beginning of theFirst World War. Written by an officerwho visited the battlefield and who waswell acquainted with the Bulgarian Officercorps , he viewed the opening phasecovered in this study from their point ofview. The war was a comprehensive andunmitigated disaster for the Ottomans, who lost 83% of their territories in Europeand 69% of their European population.

The Hundred Years’ War was a series ofconflicts waged from 1337 to 1453 by theHouse of Plantagenet, rulers of theKingdom of England, against the House ofValois, rulers of the Kingdom of France, over the succession of the French throne. Each side drew many allies into the war. Itwas one of the most notable conflicts ofthe Middle Ages, in which fivegenerations of kings from two rivaldynasties fought for the throne of thelargest kingdom in Western Europe. Thewar marked both the height of chivalryand its subsequent decline, and thedevelopment of strong national identitiesin both countries. This work by Oman thatformed part of the Oxford Manuals ofEnglish History Series is both succinct andscholarly.

This is a brilliant and lucid history of TheGreat Revolt, (also called Wat Tyler'sRebellion) this was a major uprisingacross large parts of England in 1381. Therevolt had various causes, including thesocio-economic and political tensionsgenerated by the Black Death in the 1340s,the high taxes resulting from the conflictwith France during the Hundred Years'War, and instability within the localleadership of London. The final trigger forthe revolt was the intervention of a royalofficial, John Bampton, in Essex on 30May 1381. His attempts to collect unpaidpoll taxes in Brentwood ended in a violentconfrontation, which rapidly spread acrossthe south-east of the country.

This was the first major military victory inthe modern era of an Asian power over aEuropean one. Military scholars continueto debate the historical significance of thewar. Good coverage is given to the Battleof Liaoyang.Post-war reports conclusivelyillustrated the battlefield destructiveness ofthis conflict. This  was the first time thetactics of entrenched positions for infantrydefended with machine guns and artillerybecame vitally important. Both wouldbecome dominant factors in World War I.Even though entrenched positions hadalready been a significant part of both theFranco-Prussian War and the AmericanCivil War, it is now apparent that the highcasualty counts, and the tactical lessonsreadily available to observer nations, werecompletely disregarded in preparations forwar in Europe, and during much of thecourse of World War I.

SB 174pp. illustrations, chart, 2013N&MP Reprint of 1946 Original

EditionPublished Price £11.50

The United States Navy operated longrange fleet submarines in the Pacificduring World War II in what has oftenbeen referred to as a ‘forgotten’ campaign. In fact the operations of these submarinesin the Pacific contributed greatly to thewar against Japan, depriving her of muchneeded supplies as well as curtailing troopmovements and reinforcements during the‘island war.’This book details the histories of all USsubmarine losses during the Second WorldWar together with a report of alloperational cruises carried out by eachvessel. Dero-Becker’s Military Gallery A Collection of

Military Costume Plates Of The European Nations

c.1815-1855 in three volumes

During the middle of the nineteenth century, a series of hand-coloured lithographic prints featuring the great armies of Europe, from both the Napoleonic period and later,

was published by the printing firm Dero-Becker, who were active in Paris and in Brussels (1840-1855).

Under the overall title of ‘Galerie Militaire’ some 300 prints were produced, all the work of several talented artists. The full-page images

are strong in detail and colour, with several litho companies being involved in their production.

This is without doubt one of the largest suites of predominantly European military uniforms produced, and a fine reference for

all military historians, wargamers and painters of European historical armies from 1800-1850. These three volumes contain 299 coloured lithographed plates, collections of these plates

are exceptionally rare to find in the antiquarian market, even single plates can be classified as uncommon.

These colourful lithographs, each accompanied by a lively and informative text by Ray Westlake describing the unit depicted, illustrate a broad range

of infrequently illustrated European armies and their uniforms. Many plates usefully include, along with their front facing representations, both back

and side uniform views. In alphabetical order the nations and states

represented over the three volumes are: Arabia, Austria, Belgium, China, Denmark,

France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Prussia, Russia,

Sardinia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and Vatican City.

Please refer to our website for the full listing of all 299 plates.
