Station Vigilance Committee: volunteers are welcome

The concept of Station Vigilance Committee ( SVC) is that of involving citizens in some services that the lo-cal police undertake locally. And this concept was first introduced in the colonial times.

Each police station / police zone in the city has a SVC and Mylapore too has had one since the early 1950s. Today, you too can become a SVC member if you wish to serve alongside the police. A member of the group can be active in many ways, locally.

First, the SVC group works with the police to reg-ulate crowds and to secure the area when events like temple festivals are held.

Secondly, SVC members plan and participate in pub-lic campaigns that are de-vised by the police. Like cam-paigns on drugs de-addiction,

safe driving, neighbourhood se-curity, etc. These campaigns may be just small meet-ings or cycle/bike rallies or meeting the public and giv-ing them hand-bills. Thirdly, SVC members are called to join the police on night patrols in colonies. These patrols are held between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

In the past two years, SVC members lent their hands dur-ing the pandemic time, to en-sure people followed lockdown rules and have manned road junctions to check motorists who had no business to be out.

Currently, there are some 50 members in the SVC in the Mylapore police dis-trict. But it’s convenor, K. S. Shankar who used to be in the IT field and is a skills trainer and consultant now, says they

want people in the 18 to 40 years age group to join the SVC here, so that these people can be handy on night patrols.

When you apply to the SVC, a complete background check is made by the police before an identity card is is-sued and your profile filed at the police district office. There is no uniform or badge that is given - volunteers merely work alongside the local police as citizen volunteers. Those who put in substantial service are also given a certificate.

Community fears ‘heritage’ mosquewill be affected by Metro rail work

The community attending the Jumma Masjid on Kutchery Road, Mylapore are very concerned with the fate of the mosque once work on the proposed Chennai Metro rail line in this region begins.

Leaders of the community say that while they are not opposed to the rail line develop-ment, they fear that underground excavation and drilling will affect the mosque which they say is over 350 years old.

They say that Chennai Metro’s company,

CMRL has formally listed taking over a small section of the mosque campus for its work, as it has listed other parts of proper-ties on Kutchery Road for accquisition. This proposed line is from the Light House via Luz and Alwarpet. All underground.

Mosque sources say that a station is planned to be located near the mosque zone.

Leaders of the community say that they have presented the issues that worry them to CMRL officials and to the Mylapore MLA and say they hope something positive will come out.

I have lost a great friend. A co-traveller for a few decades. D. Hemachandra Rao.

He loved the city of Madras and gave it all he had to contribute.

And he was one of India’s foremost philatelist and per-haps the only expert on India’s light houses.

The city and our passion for it brought us together some 15/17 years ago. And we remained a team till the end.

Rao was a man of many large, unique parts. He became hyperactive after the passing of his wife and retirement from his consultancy. He first went back to his long love - philat-ely and expanded it by the day. He was an expert at creating special postal covers to mark milestones and he chose to specialise in everything on India’s maritime world - mainly, its Navy. Rao’s collection of these covers are fantastic ones - some carry the signatures of great people, including the President of India. A part of this collection is now displayed at INS Valsura.

Rao would go many miles to create these special covers. He would access even the remotest Post Office in India to get a cover cancelled, bug a senior Naval officer and get the signed postal cover shipped to his place.

When we launched ‘Madras Day’ ( to celebrate the city, its heritage and its people and places), Rao was in the middle. He created great special covers for August 22, now a collec-tor’s item, organised exhibitions, volunteered to give talks on his favourite themes and even headed Walks.

He spent a decade researching on India’s Light Houses and on the Buckingham Canal. The Tamil Nadu Archives was his study centre; he spent long hours pouring into files that were shared reluctantly and in piece-meal here.

Once his desk study was over, Rao launched on two great journeys. The Light Houses of India and the Canal. I was his co-traveller on many such journeys that educated me no end.

Rao has travelled to every nook, channel, lock and basin of the Buckingham Canal - across Tamil Nadu and Andhra. There’s nobody who knew the Canal as he did.

His Light Houses of India journeys were epic. From Madras to Dhanushkodi and Muttam, from Kanyakumari to Mangalore to Goa and Bombay and on to the Gujarat coast, from Pulicat all the way to Sagar in West Bengal. It was a dif-ferent India we got to experience.

Rao has also documented all the old bridges of Madras and the ‘red’ buildings of this city.

His biggest project was creating a Maritime Museum at his bungalow in Virugambakkam, the house he built when that area of Madras was still paddy fields. His choice collec-tion of postal stuff and materials on Light Houses, India’s Navy and the Canal are displayed here. Amazing work for a man who did it all in his 60s and 70s. And a co-traveller who enriched my work and my life.

These are the people who we must celebrate; not mourn.

MY STORY

“In learning One will teach and in Teaching One will Learn”

Just read this quote and it truly reflects my years as an Acharya. Teaching Bharatanatyam for over four decades has taught me a myriad of things... of just not Bharatanatyam alone but life’s lessons. A dance teacher has to be as versatile and multifaceted as her art form. For us, our dance class was a second home where we also learnt theory of dance, slokas, mythology, music, culture and it was a place where friends from class were family too.

It was only ten years ago that I started out on my own and established Shri Silambam...till

then I was busy performing and teaching at my alma mater, Shree Bharatalaya, under the care of my gurus, Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy and guru (late) vidwan Madurai N. Krishnan.

One evening, I casually men-tioned to Sudha Aunty that I would like to start a small class of my own... It was Shivaratri eve and Sudha Aunty immediately sug-

gested I start my class on Shivaratri, on Febru-ary 20, 2012. Initially, we began in a classroom at the school for special children called V-Excel, thanks to my friend Dr. Vasudha Prakash. Later, we moved to our present space at Luz Church Road.

The students were of varied age groups. Little Anhiti and Mathangi were just 5 years old when they joined, now they are little ladies. The little girls would just come and play - we would devise games that involved Araimandi, gestures and a few movements.

When I started out on my own, the curricu-

lum and method of teaching were based on what and how I had learnt from my gurus. But I had to (and still) move with the times and change the way I taught. For many years we had this one visitor to our class-- a toddler of a year and a half- who came religiously to our class from the apart-ment across our space. Little Ananda’s interest in Natyam was something else. She observed a lot, she could then perform bits of Alarippu. She once got angry that a little girl’s anga shuddham was awry and gave the girl a light tap!

These ten years have been a roller coaster ride, we have done much constructive work, devel-oped lots of choreographies, done lots of learning, won lots of accolades, suffered a few heart aches...and these experiences are constantly impacting me as a dancer, a teacher and more important, as a person. Why do I dance? Why do I teach? There’s something intangible, a je-ne-sais-quoi about it . . .

Discontinue fees charged on walkers in Poonga

The monthly fee of Rs 500 for a pass for walking in Thol-kappia Poonga is disincentive for walkers especially senior citi-zens. This type of taxing health conscious walkers may slowly spread to other city parks.

NSS wing of Queen Mary’s Collegedeveloping ‘eco-zone’ on campusBy Our Staff Reporter

For long, the heritage campus of Queen Mary’s College has presented a run-down look ; decaying old buildings, wild vegeta-tion, waste lying all around and temporary structures lying around this off-Marina campus.

In recent times, an effort is being made by the college faculty and students to im-prove the environment.

The members of the NSS ( National Service Scheme) are developing a forested zone and waterways/pond at the front end of the campus, the

area on the north-east side.Overseeing the transfor-

mation is college principal,

Uma Maheswari.The students have as-

sisted in clearing this area of waste and in planting a vari-ety of saplings and now water these saplings. One recent Saturday, a group of them were seen clearing dry leaves and twigs and watering the saplings. They have also planted some fruit-bearing plants - sapota and guava.

Waterways have been dug up and a small pond created; this to tap the rainwater during the monsoon season

and recharge the ground and hopefully, also let water hold up in these waterways in the pond.

Once the basic canals are created, their base will be layered with clay so that the water holds on when it rains, and creates water bodies in this area. Plans include to use coir mats on the bunds so that the soil does not slip down.

Says Dr. Eswari Ramesh, who teaches economics and is in charge of the NSS, “We

have about 500 NSS student members and some 50 of them take turns to maintain the green zone we have cre-ated.”

Students who sign up for NSS get two credit points and these help them when they apply for PG courses and for employment.

Says one student, “When water was stagnating in this area after last year’s mon-soon, we noticed lots of birds visiting our campus. It was a wonderful sight. We want to green the area and take care of it as long as we are here.”

This project has been sup-ported by Indian Oil and Coir Board along with Exnora.

Says faculty member Es-wari who once studied here, “The college principal, Uma Maheswari is very keen about this project and has taken a lot of interest in it. Our girls are also keen and some volunteer to work here on the

weekends too.”The other faculty mem-

bers at QMC who oversee the NSS projects are Dr. Vanaja, Mary Reena, Dr Murugeswari and Daya Packia Sherin.

What this college also needs is special attention to its heritage blocks and a grand bungalow which need to be conserved quickly. Only piece-meal civil work is car-ried out here. This initiative has to come from the PWD and the state government.

A star, a big star sat through a Tamil play at Narada Gana Sabha in Alwarpet last Wednesday evening. Rajinikanth, his wife and his daughter were at the sabha auditorium to watch Y. Gee. Mahendra’s play ‘Charukesi’. The family was a special invitee and Mahendra delayed the start of his play a bit for the arrival of the star. The play was staged at the end of the awards event of Kartik Fine Arts’ annual Kodai Nataka Vizha.

Walking inside Poonga: people suggest reduction in chargesBy Our Staff Reporter

A few Mylapore zone resi-dents are suggesting to Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) that it can reduce the charges fixed to get paid passes to walk inside the Tholkappia Poonga (Adyar Poonga) in R. A. Puram.

They say that since many walkers are seniors with limited income and since this is a state-managed space, the Trust can lower the rates for the monthly passes.

Says Rekha Suresh Kumar, “We welcome the facility to walk in the Poonga but the charges are too much, especially for senior citizens, subsisting on pensions. After all, walkers are mostly senior citizens!”

Added Sriram Santhanam, “The Poonga management can consider reducing the entry fees for regular walkers.”

Since the Poonga was open for walking for limited hours, in the morning and evening in mid-May, people are walking in as casual walkers and the number of people seeking

passes is picking up but slowly.Walks are now allowed in the morning

( 6.30 a.m. to 8.00 a.m.) and also in the even-ing (4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m.)

While you can walk around for a day’s ses-sion on payment of Rs.20, you can purchase a pass for one month or for three months ( Rs.500 / Rs.1500 is the fee). For details call – 24614523, 97865 58397 or 9840813321.

Fathimah Eye Clinic and the community at the Jumma Masjid, Kutchery Road, Mylapore organised a free eye screening camp on Sunday (May 29), through the morn-ing. Mosque activity co-ordinator Abdul Samad says some 300 people made use of this camp and that while 17 will undergo operations without paying any fees, another 70 who require spectacles will be provided with them, free.

The Clinic is in Doomingkuppam, San Thome and is run by Dr. Sheikh Hameed and Dr Adhik Sheikh. These two doctors and their team handled the camp which was open to all people.

This is one place where you can get a bot-tle of maavadu pickle at any time of the year. Almost.

Meena Appalams is a nook sandwiched in a row of shops, north of the Sri Anjaneya Temple in Royapettah High Road. The owner, Ravi will only say that he manages to source the maavadu on a regular basis and prepare the pickle at home which is in Triplicane. How he gets the maavadu and from where, he will not tell you. But he as-sures you that the pickle is stocked through the year, almost. And it is freshly made from time to time.

A half-kilo bottle costs about Rs.240 and

prices vary a bit, both ways. There are pickles of lemon, garlic, tomato,

ginger and mahali kizhangu.The shop also stocks a variety of vathals,

appalams, podis and powders and all that is needed in the kitchen.

The store is open 10 am to 1 pm, 5 and 8 pm only and is closed on Sundays.

Ravi used to manage a lottery sales business here till 1998 and when the sales were banned by the state, launched Meena Appalams. Today, he has customers from across the city who seek some of his special products. Contact :98845 42475

New batch of free driving course for young women launchedBy Our Staff Reporter

Former Mylapore MLA, R. Nataraj, with support from funders like IDRF and STS launched the 4th batch of a free car/auto driving course for young women from eco-nomically weak background recently.

These women will be skilled by a private driving school.

Nataraj says the chal-lenge though is to find jobs for the women once they pass the tests and get a driv-ing licence. Only a few are capable of seeking loans to get an auto to drive and earn. Others seek driving jobs.

He says Mylaporeans who want a part / full time driver can contact his office since there is a pool of recently trained women drivers. Con-tact Nataraj’s office assistant on 7358-418871.
