books, programs, scrapbooks, sheet music and other items relating to music in the New Haven area given to the New Haven Colony Historical Society over the years. It also contains some of the records of two men who contributed to New Haven musical history, Benjamin Jepson and Harold Earle Johnson.

Benjamin Jepson (1832-1914) was the first supervisor of music in the New Haven schools, a position he held from 1864 to 1914. Before that, he served in the Tenth Regiment of the Connecticut Infantry during the Civil War. A New Haven public school was named in his honor in 1912, the same year that he received a~ Yale honorary degree. A scholarship to the Yale School of Music was later given in his name •

VIII: Analysis: This collection contains music and song books, song sheets and sheet music, programs, musical newspapers, a few photographs, and three scrapbooks. The oldest item in the collection is a copy of Asahel Benham's Social Harmony, published in 1798. Programs range from 1829 to 1976. The material is contained in three full and one half-size box and four oversized folders. Items in folders are arranged chron.ologically. The numbes of items in each folder is indicated in brackets, usually following the title of the folder. For a more detailed breakdown and description of the collection, see the Table of Contents which follows.
