Thanks

This month, your Shogun has decided to keepthings short and simple and not bore you with profoundstatements of little use. We had our 1st Kid’s weekend on October 16that the Kempfer Ranch. If I recall correctly we had 10kids in attendance and about the same number of clubmembers. The kids were instructed in casting, knots (Itaught my kid how to properly swear at “wind knots”)and fly tying. After lunch we traveled to one of the manycanals on the property and the kids put their new skillsto work on the local panfish. I believe I saw one basscaught in the 9 pound range. Did I mention that I alsotaught my student how to tell a good fishing lie? I think the kids all had a good time and they werequite surprised when at the end of the day, they wereallowed to keep the fly rod and reel they used during theday. I hope they will continue to use these rods todevelop a love of fly fishing and in time, pass on theseskills to the next generation. I would like to thank all those involved in mak-ing this day a reality. Thanks to all members who attend-ed and helped throughout the day. A special thanks toFrank Catino, who spearheaded this day and came upwith the fly rods that we gifted to the kids. And thanksto Billy Kempfer who allowed us the use of his facilityto conduct this class and who also cooked everyone agreat open fire lunch. And of course I must thank Steve Huff. Stevespoke to the club last January and declined any paymentfor his time. He instead asked that the funds be used toprovide local kids the opportunity to learn the art of flyfishing. Steve understands that the kids are the future offly fishing and wants to do what he can to keep the sportalive and strong for years to come. It’s his way of givingback to the sport he loves. It’s no wonder this guy is afishing legend and headed to the fishing Hall of Fame. Thanks Steve.

OUTINGS

The November outing will be our annual camp-out at Long Point Park, on November 12th and 13th.Four sites are reserved in the club’s name for Friday andSaturday nights. There is a nice, wind-sheltered ramp atthe Park, and there is good access to Sebastian Inlet,Sebastian River and other areas of the Indian River. Come and bring your camping equipment andsupplies and enjoy the companionship of fellow clubmembers.

The October beach fishing was exciting for thosewho arrived early. Ron Winn caught 4½ species (Hissnook escaped). The surf was rough, but full of bait.

This month, we have a special double-headertying session. Mike Horne will be tying “Mike’s Min-now”, a killer fly for most freshwater species, particular-ly Bream and Crappie. The fly is tied on a small jig hook, with a chenille body and any natural or synthetic hairfor a tail (incidentally, chenille is the French word forcaterpillar) . Mike will bring all necessary materials, oryou can bring your choice of colors. Then, Paul Parker will present his version of afreshwater Minnow Fly for Crappie.Materials for Paul’s fly:Thread: redHook: size 10 nymphLead: .015” dia.Body: sparkle braid pearlTail and top: black rabbitEyes: small stick-on5 min epoxy
