Message from the Headteacher - Mrs John
Stanborough welcomed 31 inspirational women into
the community to celebrate International Women’s
Day 2020. This was an opportunity to celebrate the
achievements of women but also a chance for the
Year 8 and 9 students to speak to the women about
their careers, the challenges they have faced and
how they have overcome them to get to where they
are now in their lives. Thanks to Mrs Adams for
leading this and to Paypoint for helping mastermind
this initiative. A special thanks has to go to all the inspirational women who gave up
their time to help raise aspirations.
As a community we will be welcoming our future Year 7 students and their families to
Stanborough. The new Year 7 welcome evening will be held on Tuesday 10th March
from 6pm to 7pm. This is the first step in ensuring that our future students and their
families are supported and nurtured through this next phase.
Headteacher’s commendations for this week are: Emily Turner, (Yr. 7) for her amazing work in
raising money for the Ollie Foundation;
Georgia Perrott and Emily Bolton, (Yr. 7)
for taking part in a 5K mud run;
Turki Al-Haddabi, (Yr. 8) for consistently
working hard and always being willing to help;
Shane Meenan, (Yr. 8) for always having such
a wonderfully positive attitude and being hard
working;
Aimee Collom, (Yr. 8) for her brilliant
citizenship;
Nathan Davies, (Yr. 9) for being awarded ‘Leading Bowler’ by Saracens
Hertfordshire Men’s Cricket League;
Sailash Kirivasan, (Yr. 9) for his outstanding answers in a topic assessment in
Business Studies;
Archie Chaplin, (Yr. 9) for winning the Premier League Tournament with Chelsea
Youth FC whilst on tour;
Bradley Loughnane, Ellen Green and Laura Wells, (Yr. 10) for always going
above and beyond in their French classwork and homework;

for having no negative points.
Quote of the week:
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Attendance Matters…….
At Stanborough, we believe that attendance is essential in order for students to make good academic progress and to feel that
they are active members in the school community. Did you know 97% attendance equates to 5 days off a year? Regular school
attendance helps our young people to learn; progress; establish good habits; be supervised and safe and prepare for the future.
Should you have any questions or wish to discuss any issues that may be preventing regular attendance or causing lateness,
please do not hesitate to contact the school. Please remember that if your child is absent for any reason, parents/carers
should call 01707 321755 and press option 1 on each day of absence.

Student Success
Here are some of the achievements our students have made out of school over the last few
weeks. Well done to all of you. We are all so proud!
Duke of Edinburgh - Gold Award
Well done to Callum for securing a Gold award in the DofE. The awards were presented by
HRH Prince Edward, Earl Of Wessex and Rav Wilding. We are all extremely proud of you.
Well done Callum and thank you to Mrs Elliott for supporting all our students with the DofE
scheme over the last few years.
If your child has taken part in an activity outside of school and you would like to share this with us we’d love to hear from
you. Please email in a short description of the activity and, if possible, a photo.
Thanks for supporting us in celebrating all the things that make Stanborough students great.
Archie, Year 9, recently took a tour to Mumbai, India, along with the rest of his
Youth Chelsea FC team Mates and we are pleased to say that they won the Premier
League Tournament!
Emily and Georgia in Year 7 completed a 5KM
mud run. They displayed great resilience and
determination to complete a very tough
course, getting soaked to the skin with water
and mud, but finished the course and did
amazingly well.
Nathan, Year 9, was presented with an award from Saracens Hertfordshire Men’s
Cricket League for being the leading bowler in the Regional Division B East.
Last summer, Jamie and his teammates at ProFutsal London won the
U14 FA Youth Futsal Cup and became national futsal champions.
Well done for reaching the Hertfordshire regional finals!
Valentine Business Project Faizan Choudhry 10H, Oli Harvey 10B and Ellen Green 10A , write:
On Thursday 13th February 2020, our business class ran a yearly event called the
Valentine’s project 2020. This involves people ordering roses and then runners
distributing them to the recipient during tutor time. This
process involved several people giving up their lunch and break times to ensure the
operation ran smoothly.
The first step was to divide the class into three groups:
Marketing, Finance and Operations. Then leaders were
assigned; Finance: Ellen Green 10A, Marketing: Oli Harvey 10B
and Faizan Choudhry 10H, Operations: Hana Rose 10H. Each group worked
together and assigned roles for each person in the group. Such tasks included making
powerpoints, posters, locating the roses and deciding on prices.
Over time the project began to fall into place with each team providing crucial elements in order for the project
to be successful.
On the day, runners were assigned to different year groups in small groups by Oli Harvey 10B, Joe Johnson 10S
and Daisy Humphreys 10K. They then took the orders that had been placed at break time and ensured that the
roses were correctly arranged and the messages on them were complete. Finally, at form time on Thursday 13th
February the roses were delivered and the project came to an end.
Overall, this project was extremely successful by making a profit of approximately £72 with the initial revenue
amounting to £97 . Much credit to Hana Rose 10H for overseeing the project as a whole.

Parent Teacher Surgery
Thursday 26th March 2020, 2-5pm
Mr T Braybrook, Deputy Headteacher, writes:
Following the upcoming release of PU2 for Years 7 to 10, during week commencing Monday 9th March, we will
be holding a parent teacher surgery. If you are concerned about your child’s progress in any subject this
surgery offers an opportunity to meet with up to three subject teachers.
The PTS is open to all parents and students in all year groups. Parents/carers will be emailed a letter which
outlines how to make appointments for this PTS via our online booking system on Monday 9th March.
Appointments can be made from then until midnight on Tuesday 24th March. Should you have any queries
please contact [email protected].
We do not expect parents to attend this surgery as a matter of course and in some instances members of staff
may also request appointments which will be confirmed with you by email or telephone.
Please note school will finish at 1pm on Thursday 26th March and appointments will run from 2pm until 5pm.
Stanborough Celebrates World Book Day
Stanborough School Literacy Team, writes:
Yesterday, Thursday 5th March, was World Book Day. To celebrate this we planned a
DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) and students were given book tokens to put
towards a book of their choice. The day also included tutor time quizzes and a
celebration event for the finalists who entered the 500 words competition.
As part of this we are launching a Read for Good Readathon and we’d love your child to join in. It begins on
World Book Day and runs until Friday 27th March. It’s been proven that children who read for pleasure are
more likely to be successful and happy throughout their lives (OECD).
The charity Read for Good encourages children to read through its unique motivational approach inspiring
reluctant readers to give reading a go, and keen readers to read more widely. It’s all about reading for fun and
they are motivated to read because the money they raise in sponsorship helps to provide a regular supply of
brand new books and a resident storyteller to every major children’s hospital in the UK.
All you have to do is:
1. Take a look at what your child plans to read, or help them complete their list of books. Students can choose
whatever they want to read: fact, fiction, e-books, poetry, audio books, comics – anything goes!
2. Help your child find sponsors among family and friends. They can pick up a sponsor card from the LRC.
Students need to bring the money in (in cash) by Friday 27th March and hand it in at the bursar’s office.
Please support your child’s passion for reading as much as you can.

Volunteers Needed!
Mrs E Daplyn, Assistant Headteacher, writes:
As many of you are aware, we had the main corridors of the school painted in the summer of 2019, and we are
currently undertaking the building of our new classroom block and music and drama block. However, the staff
room where the staff work, meet and relax, is looking tired. We would therefore like to give the staffroom a
makeover, including a fresh coat of paint, over the 2020 summer holidays.
We are looking for volunteers who could offer some time from July 20th to July 23rd to come in and paint to
support the makeover of our staffroom. Mrs John will be there painting and we have asked staff if they are
available to support too. All equipment and paint will be
provided.
If you would like to volunteer to help, even for just half a
day, or you are able to donate paint and equipment,
please contact me at Stanborough School on

Run For Stanborough 2020!
Friday 27th March Mr T Braybrook, Deputy Headteacher, writes:
Plans are afoot for our annual charity extravaganza which is ‘Run for Stanborough’.
This will take place on Friday 27th March in the afternoon where students will either
run the course as part of House Cross Country or walk it as part of our efforts to
support our charity of the year which is the Ollie Foundation who we continue to
work closely with.
Students will be given more details about this event in the next couple of weeks along with a sponsor form to
collect money. As ever, after the run/walk, there will be a variety of stalls with games, sweets, drinks and competitions for students to partake in. If students want to organise a stall they should see their Year Leader /
Deputy Year leader.
We look forward to a great event raising lots of money for the Ollie foundation!
Help! - we need your empty cereal boxes!
Miss H Carter, Art and Design Teacher, writes:
Please can you keep donating your cereal boxes to T5 in the art and design building. They're really useful to us
as disposable pallets as well as building material for our 3D letters. Thank you to all the parents and students
who have already donated, please can you keep them coming - we use them every day!

Hyde Cricket Club, took an amazing 22 wickets (including 2 fivers) with an average of 10.73 last season. This is
quite an achievement in his first season in open age cricket as his opponents are typically adult players with
many years of experience. Well done Nathan!
Congratulations to Jamie, Year 10, who has been invited to participate in the ProFutsal team who are heading
off to the prestigious Costa Blanca Cup which takes place in Benidorm, Spain. Pro Futsal competes in the top
division of the country at senior level so this is a great achievement, well done Jamie!

BASKETBALL
It was a successful week for both the Year 7 and Year 8 basketball teams. Year 7 performed brilliantly in their

Jorge, scoring 8 baskets! Well done David!
The Year 8 team also won their match against Hertswood by 20 points to 12. This was another excellent
performance by the team led by player of the match Tapi Zonda who scored 6 baskets! Well done Tapi!
NETBALL
The Year 10 netball team played a very close match against Queenswood. The lead kept changing from one
