FRENCH AMBASSADOR

The Embassy of France in Australia is proud to be a partner of the 33rd Alliance Française French Film Festival. For more than three decades, this widely celebrated Festival has been presenting the best of French excellence on the big screen. Last year it reached unparalleled heights, featuring several world premieres and attracting over 170,000 patrons.

Courage, generosity, equality, and team spirit are recurring themes which demonstrate France’s determination to address contemporary challenges positively. This richness is evident in the selection of 42 movies for the Festival this year which will provide a film that everyone can enjoy. In fact, they will surely find several!

This year’s Festival would not have been possible without the unwavering support from Palace Cinemas, Alliances Françaises, sponsors, partners, and distributors who have continuously offered the Festival a selection of movies highlighting the richness and diversity of French cinema to our ever-growing and faithful audience.

This success also owes much to a dedicated audience and the positive word-of-mouth which the Alliance Française French Film Festival generates.

There is hope. The Festival is the best demonstration that we can still dream together - and start a new beginning.

Storytelling is in the DNA of human nature and cinema is one of our most profound ways to share those stories. Despite the challenges of the past 2 years, French filmmakers have continued to create entertaining and thought-provoking content.

Just as the last edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival marked new milestones, including record audiences despite a pandemic, the 33rd Festival will feature 42 films, covering a wide spectrum of genres and again including several Australian premieres and many world premieres! This year’s program also sees 4 directors making their feature film debut. The opening movie Lost Illusions is a masterpiece told with panache and covers a subject matter very relevant to our times. Overall, the line-up presents a window to the challenges of now and tomorrow’s world. French cinema presents a snapshot of our society, the society we want to build together with generosity and a sense of commitment. We also need to laugh and escape from these bewildering times. The AF FFF 2022 features several comedies, many beautiful tales of romance and compelling stories. You will travel to France, Lebanon, Mali, Russia, Canada, Tibet, the North Pole and many other places… and meet fascinating characters that will take you into the whirlwind of life. They are free, wild and deeply seductive, rather like Alain Delon in Purple Noon, our Classic movie. The 33rd edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival is a welcome Ode a la Vie!

“The French New wave of the late 50’s and 60’s had an enormous influence on the so called Australian New wave of the 1970’s, of whom I was one. The French showed us that independent movies could be successful outside the conveyor belt of the Hollywood Studio system. And the French inspired us to be bold in the way we told our stories. My film Newsfront (1978) was the culmination of a decade spent watching mainly French cinema.”

LOST ILLUSIONSILLUSIONS PERDUES

An all-star cast dazzles in the spectacular and exhilarating new film by Xavier Giannoli (Marguerite, AF FFF16; The Singer, AF FFF13), an adaptation of Balzac’s classic novel about a young idealist who learns that anything can be bought and sold.

1821. Handsome poet Lucien (Benjamin Voisin - Moving On and Summer of 85, AF FFF21 - in a star-making turn) is poor, but highly ambitious. Failing to make a name for himself in his provincial hometown, he naively follows his married patroness (a radiant Cécile de France) to the glamorous beau monde of Paris.

But Lucien has entered a society far more dangerous than he realised, and the venomous denizens of the salons (brought to life by a superb ensemble including Jeanne Balibar, Gérard Depardieu and Xavier Dolan) conspire to keep him out of their ranks. Lucien is forced to abandon his principles and find work at a low-brow newspaper, where his scathing critiques soon cause a sensation and arouse the interest of admirers and publishers. But in a society where profit and status rule, what is really left for Lucien?

Epic in scope and impact, Lost Illusions is an eerily prescient fable bracingly attuned to the anxieties of the modern media age. This is grand French cinema at its most lavish, and finest.

FLY ME AWAYENVOLE-MOI

Inspired by a true story, Fly Me Away is a feel-good movie full of humanity, from Christophe Barratier, Director of the classic French film The Chorus.

Thomas (Victor Belmondo, Sweetheart, AF FFF20) spends his nights in clubs and his days in bed having dropped out of university and living off his father’s wealth. That is until his father, Dr. Reinhard (Gérard Lanvin), fed up with his son’s escapades, cuts him off completely and forces him to take care of one of his young patients.

Marcus is twelve years old and lives alone with his mother. Born with a serious congenital disorder, he divides his time between a reception centre for sick children where he goes to school and repeated stays in hospital. This encounter will disrupt their lives and change them both, profoundly and forever.

Fly Me Away perfectly captures the balance between tears and heartwarming laughter, as this unlikely pair forms a brotherly bond that is made all the more convincing by Eloundou’s mature performance which brings the film’s deep emotion to life.

LOVE SONGS FOR TOUGH GUYS CETTE MUSIQUE NE JOUE POUR PERSONNE

COMEDY | FRANCE, BELGIUM | 2021 | 106 MIN | CTC

Featuring a delicious ensemble cast led by the fabulous François Damiens (Of Love and Lies, AF FFF20) and Vanessa Paradis (Family Photo, AF FFF19), the hilarious new romantic comedy from Samuel Benchetrit is a charmingly-affectionate fable of a disparate group of ordinary people finding love and fulfillment through an unexpected source: the arts.

In the port city of Dunkirk, weary crime boss Jeff (The Bélier Family’s wonderful Damiens, AF FFF15) has a big problem: young punks are muscling in on his turf. But Jeff is distracted: he’s fallen for Roxane, a supermarket cashier he adores from afar. Taking a leaf from the Cyrano playbook, he tries to win her heart by writing love poems, but doesn’t have the courage to deliver them. Meanwhile, Jeff’s grizzled and near-mute enforcer is sent to shake down local suburban widow Suzanne (a never-better Paradis), who is preparing to portray Simone de Beauvoir in the community theatre’s annual musical, but instead finds himself drawn into the actual production…

Featuring an exquisitely layered script that slowly reveals genuine pathos for all its characters, Love Songs for Tough Guys is a deadpan but giddily

romantic fable of imperfect people with complex and passionate interior lives. Huge-hearted and funny, it’s one of the most entertaining and intelligent comedies of this year’s selection.

HAPPENING L’ÉVÉNEMENT

DRAMA | FRANCE | 2021 | 100 MIN | CTC

Winner of this year’s Golden Lion Award at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, Happening is an adaptation of Annie Ernaux’s autobiographical novel. The movie is a powerful female story set in France, 1963 - a society that censures women’s desires.

Audrey Diwan’s second movie is a raw tale of smashed innocence set at a time when a woman’s right to have an abortion was classified as murder. The film follows the story of a young girl, studying in Paris, who dreams of becoming a writer and the challenges she faces.

Strong, raw, intense, heartbreaking, this is a must-see film with a great cast, featuring the young lead actress Anamaria Vartolomei supported by the iconic Sandrine Bonnaire.

Happening is French social realism at its finest, the film does not shy away from this increasingly relevant topic as women’s rights are challenged across the globe. It’s this atmosphere of judgement and isolation that is palpable, as the line between drama and thriller are blurred in what seems like the protagonist’s fight for life.

“I made a movie about being hard of hearing because I lost some hearing several years ago. I decided to make a comedy on this subject.” - Pascal Elbé.

This romantic comedy is centered around Antoine (Pascal Elbé, Knock, AF FFF18) a history professor in his early 50s, who discovers he is losing his hearing. Unable to own up to his disability and his attempts to disguise it only resulting in those around him finding his behaviour increasingly odd, he resigns himself to living in his bubble. An encounter with Claire, a widow whose daughter is mute, gives him the strength to open up to the world again.

In addition to being behind the camera, Pascal Elbé plays the main character in this very personal film. For his third movie as a director, he surrounds himself with a strong cast: Sandrine Kiberlain (French Tech, AF FFF22), François Berléand (How to Be a Good Wife, AF FFF20), Valérie Donzelli (Notre Dame, AF FFF20), to name a few.

This well-rounded cast of Hear Me Out delivers a touching exploration of the risks and rewards of revealing our vulnerabilities and that shows there’s no shame in asking for help. Dealing with the universal themes of change, difference, and communication, Elbé explores the lighter side of understanding one’s self and in turn being understood.

THE YOUNG LOVERS LES JEUNES AMANTS

ROMANCE | FRANCE | 2022 | 113 MIN | CTC

The fabulous Fanny Ardant, Melvil Poupaud and Cécile de France beguile in The Young Lovers, Carine Tardieu’s eagerly anticipated follow up to Just to Be Sure (AF FFF17), a modern and emotionally-nuanced romantic dramedy of a woman who embarks on a relationship with a much younger man, and the implications her choices have on those around her.

Elegant, retired architect Shauna (a radiant, never-better Ardant, La Belle Époque AF FFF 20) crosses paths with Pierre (Melvil Poupaud, Summer of 85, AF FFF21), a married oncologist in his 40s, who first made an impression on her in a brief meeting over a decade earlier. Both are drawn to each other and begin a passionate affair. While Pierre’s family life is soon turned upside down - his wife (de France) incredulous at the age difference - Shauna struggles with feelings she thought well-belonged to the past, and the promise of what may remain…

Inspired by real events experienced by the mother of one of Tardieu’s closest friends, the late Sólveig Anspach, this wonderful new film deftly avoids sentimentality, and empathises as equally with those affected by the couple’s unexpected connection as it does with them. Capturing the thrill, guilt and vulnerability of December-May romances, The Young Lovers is a hugely moving call to arms to fully appreciate life, no matter society’s preconceptions.

The follow up movie to Julien-Petit’s box-office hit Invisibles (AF FFF20) The Kitchen Brigade, explores the world of French gastronomy while also tackling issues of social justice and inclusion through the story of Cathy.

Cathy (Audrey Lamy, already starring in Invisibles) is an inflexible 40-year-old sous-chef, finally fulfilling her lifelong dream of opening her own high-end restaurant. Things do not go to plan. Facing serious financial difficulties, she reluctantly accepts a job in the cafeteria of a shelter for young migrants. Though she hates the new job at first, Cathy’s remarkable skill and passion for cuisine start to change the kids’ lives. And it turns out they also have a lot to teach her.

True to his favourite genre, social comedy, Louis-Julien Petit explores learning, communication, success and self-esteem, mixing humour, humanism, realism and entertainment. With The Kitchen Brigade, the director pays tribute to young people with a tormented past and an uncertain future, holding onto hope of a better life, struggling relentlessly to integrate into French society; and of course, acknowledges all those who devote so much energy to help them.

This feel-good movie with a strong touch of humanity also features François Cluzet (Intouchables and We’ll End Up Together, AF FFF20) and several newcomers, including Fatoumata Kaba.

LA TRAVIATA, MY BROTHERS AND I MES FRÈRES ET MOI

DRAMA | FRANCE | 2022 | 108 MIN | M

In his feature debut, French filmmaker Yohan Manca breaks down the barriers and preconceptions surrounding art and culture with a touching story of hope, chance and overcoming adversity.

La Traviata, My Brothers and I, tells the story of 14-year-old Nour (Maël Rouin-Berrandou), growing up in a housing project in the South of France, with his older brothers, who take turns caring for their ailing mother, who is in a coma.

Nour dreams of becoming the new Luciano Pavarotti, inspired by La Traviata, an opera he knows well because his Italian father wooed his North African mother by singing its arias to her. Between his work in the community and rising tensions at home, Nour dreams of escaping to a faraway place. When he crosses paths with Sarah (Judith Chemla, A Woman’s Life, AF FFF17), an opera singer teaching summer classes, he finally finds the opportunity to come out of his shell and explore new horizons.

Avoiding clichés, the filmmaker – with the help of cinematographer Marco Graziaplena – captures the siblings through a lens influenced by Italian cinema of the 1960s and 70s and adeptly presents an inspiring slice-of-life film filled with tender, touching moments.

PEACEFUL DE SON VIVANT

A man (Benoît Magimel, We’ll End Up Together, AF FFF20) condemned too young by a serious illness. The suffering of a mother (Catherine Deneuve, Happy Birthday, AF FFF20; Claire Darling, AF FFF19) facing the unbearable. The dedication of a doctor (Dr. Gabriel Sara) and a nurse (Cécile de France, also starring in this year’s Lost Illusions) to accompany them on the impossible path to acceptance.

Writer and director Emmanuelle Bercot initially set out to explore the undying connection between a mother and her child, but through a chance encounter with Dr. Gabriel Sara, a dedicated cancer specialist who plays himself, the story of Peaceful unfolds like the stages of grief itself. Bercot chose to combine the realistic with the philosophical in this devastatingly beautiful tragedy, that leans on Sara’s real-life experiences and Magimel’s transformative performance, to convey the slow and poignant loosening of the mortal coil.

Peaceful is a touching story of the process of engaging in a ‘dance’ with the disease, trying to tame it, and coming to understand what it means to be dying while still living. A deeply moving film that examines the vulnerability of humanity and will leave audiences thinking ‘what would I do in that situation?’

Paris, 13th District is a vibrant adaptation of Adrian Tomine’s graphic novel Killing and Dying, a tale of young love filmed in sumptuous black and white. A tender, invigorating, sentimental waltz set in contemporary Paris.

The film delights, enchants and upsets. Palme d’Or winner Jacques Audiard (The Sisters Brothers, AF FFF19) paints a picture of a district of Paris, an era and a generation. Paris, 13th District is foremost a film about youth where disillusionment is met with dramatic change to occupations, lifestyles, and love lives as the characters compete against fleeting connections in the digital age.

Co-written with two of French cinema’s brightest writer-directors, Léa Mysius (Ava, AF FFF18) and Céline Sciamma (Girlhood, AF FFF15), the 13th district of Paris becomes the sublime setting for a love affair between four young adults in search of themselves, carried away by the hypnotic electronic music of French composer Rone. A story of intertwining lives and relationships that redefines what modern love is.

THE BRAVES ENTRE LES VAGUES

Dreaming, failing, starting over. Best friends Margot (Souheila Yacoub, Savages, AF FFF20) and Alma (Déborah Lukumuena, Invisibles, AF FFF20) are young, carefree and chasing their dream to become theatre actors through the streets of Paris, until adversity suddenly threatens their plans and tests their sisterhood.

Both girls go through a roller-coaster of emotions: guilt, grief, anger and a sense of injustice. Nonetheless their ride-or-die relationship can get them through anything: they are inseparable, unstoppable.

The Braves is unique in its portrayal of twentysomething women with adolescent energy typically found in male “buddy” comedies. Anaïs Volpé’s frenetic energy of untouchable female exuberance is spurred along by American cinematographer Sean Price Williams’ (Good Time and Her Smell) hand-held camera work that fills the characters’ platonic friendship with urban romance.

In her debut feature, director Anaïs Volpé explores the power of friendship and youth and the unexpected challenges life can present. A film full of energy and life, The Braves was selected to be part of the Directors’ Fortnight (la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 and also features Angélique Kidjo as Alma’s mother, Amina.

EVERYTHING WENT FINE TOUT S’EST BIEN PASSÉ

Adapted from Emmanuèle Bernheim’s memoir, Everything Went Well, Director François Ozon (Summer of 85, AF FFF21) delivers a powerful drama which tackles the sensitive and complex issue of the right to die with dignity.

When André (André Dussolier, Of Love and Lies, AF FFF20), 85, has a stroke, Emmanuelle (Sophie Marceau, Chance Encounter and Sex, Love & Therapy, AF FFF15) hurries to her father’s bedside. Sick and half-paralysed in his hospital bed, he asks Emmanuelle to help him end his life. But can you honour such a request from your own father?

What follows is a deeply human take on a difficult subject. Despite what is still a taboo topic in France, this film treads lightly, offering poignant light-hearted scenes that will make you laugh but also bring tears to your eyes.

This bittersweet, witty drama cleverly reveals the complexities of family dynamics. Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2021, Everything Went Fine is one of François Ozon’s most beautifully crafted films to date. Sophie Marceau has never been better alongside a simply masterful André Dussollier.

MAIGRET MAIGRET

The legendary Gérard Depardieu brings to remarkable life one of the most beloved characters from 20th century crime fiction in Maigret, the masterfully directed and hugely entertaining new film from multi award-winning writer/director Patrice Leconte (Monsieur Hire, Ridicule, The Girl on The Bridge), based on Georges Simenon’s internationally best-selling novels.

Paris, 1953. The body of a beautiful young woman is discovered at Place Vintimille, dressed in an elegant evening gown. There is nothing to identify her, and no witnesses. Pensive and world-weary inspector Jules Maigret (Depardieu) endeavours to piece together her story, and in doing so uncovers details about her past and character. In his enquiries, he encounters Betty (Jade Labeste), a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to the victim, but who also reminds him of one even closer to his own life…

Simenon (and Leconte’s) formidable protagonist - a French counterpart to Agatha Christie’s Poirot and P.D. James’ Dalgliesh - has been brought to the screen before, but Depardieu leaves an indelible stamp on the character, bringing tenderness and dignity to a man prepared to listen before he speaks, and to stand up for those without a voice. It’s an absolute pleasure to join him, as Maigret irascibly and ingeniously follows the clues.

FAREWELL, MR. HAFFMANN ADIEU MONSIEUR HAFFMANN

The legendary Daniel Auteuil gives one of his most superlative screen performances in the gripping new film from writer/director Fred Cavayé, based on the celebrated, multi–Molière Award-winning play.

Occupied Paris, 1941: Jews are instructed to identify themselves by wearing a yellow star. Jeweller Joseph Haffmann (Auteuil), fearing the worst, arranges for his family to flee the city and offers his employee François Mercier (Lellouche) the chance to take over his store until the conflict subsides. But his own attempts to escape are thwarted, and Haffmann is forced to seek his assistant’s protection.

It’s a risky proposition for both men, and one that Mercier’s wife Blanche (a wonderful Sara Giraudeau) is sceptical of. As the couple move in to the Haffmann home, the agreement turns into a Faustian bargain that will forever change the fate of all…

Cavayé masterfully guides the viewer through the world of Vichy France, where lives are irrevocably shaped by the twin scourges of war and the black market. Rich in moral complexity and empathy, with several twists too good to spoil, this is one of the Festival’s major highlights. It’s a must-see.WINNER – 2021

The third entry in secret agent OSS 117's parodic spy adventures.

The clueless, arrogant, hilarious and staunchly patriotic French secret agent, as silly as his retrograde attitudes — Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, aka agent OSS 117 — is back in OSS 117: From Africa With Love.

It’s 1981, the world has changed since the last adventure of OSS 117, France’s finest secret agent. Feminism is gaining ground; computer technology is developing and Communists lurk everywhere. In the midst of all this, France sends its top spy to Africa to help out President Bamba, whose re-election is threatened by rebels, led covertly by his young wife, played by the gorgeous Fatou N’Diaye.

This mission is trickier, more treacherous, and more torrid than ever and OSS 117 must, for the first time, team up with a young rival with considerable assets: the up-and-coming OSS 1001 (Pierre Niney, Goliath, AF FFF22). Starring Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin (I Feel Good, AF FFF19; Deerskin, AF FFF20), OSS 117: From Africa With Love is a delightful and entertaining movie with a healthy dose of satire.

RUMBA THERAPY RUMBA LA VIE

Rumba Therapy is a feel-good comedy made by actor-turned-Director Franck Dubosc who plays Tony, a bus driver in his 50s, going through a midlife crisis. He lives alone, having abandoned his wife and baby decades earlier. Deciding to reconnect with his daughter (Louna Espinosa), who has become a dance teacher, Tony signs up for her classes, even though he hates dancing and has two left feet.

Following the success of Rolling to You, AF FFF19, another story of middle-aged reinvention, Dubosc harnesses that same endearing comedy to highlight the emotional vulnerability of an older man searching for greater meaning in life. It’s the kind of relatable melodrama that makes audiences root for the most unlikely of characters.

A touching film telling the story of a father desperate to reconnect with his daughter and who will go to any lengths and correct the mistakes of his past. Rumba Therapy is all about getting out of your comfort zone and sheds a tenderly funny light on father-daughter relationships in adulthood.

RISE EN CORPS

Rise is an inspirational film that goes behind the scenes of professional dance, providing a glimpse into a young woman’s life as she strives to reconnect with her father, her art, and herself. These are moments of insecurity and revelation we can all relate to.

Élise (Marion Barbeau) is a talented ballet dancer whose life is turned upside down, first by an injury and then by catching her boyfriend cheating with her understudy. On a path to physical and emotional recovery, she travels from Paris to Brittany, where she embraces the artistic freedom of contemporary dance. On this journey of self-discovery, she finds friendship and new ways to reinvent herself.

The latest project of talented director, Cédric Klapisch (Someone Somewhere, AF FFF20; Back to Burgundy, AF FFF18) is a beautiful tale of strength and resilience. Rise combines emerging talent with picturesque locations to tell a fundamentally human story about finding one’s place and purpose in community. By taking audiences on a magical journey into the sublime Opéra de Paris’ backstage, Klapisch explores the passionate souls of dancers in an engrossing and sincere tale of transformation.

AUTHENTIK SUPRÊMES NTM

Authentik is an explosive and true biopic, telling the extraordinary story of French hip-hop duo, Suprême NTM, whose personalities are larger than life and as dissimilar as possible!

Rap music in the early 90’s is still in its infancy and not yet well-established in France. As the violence between police and youth in city housing projects rises, two young men, Joey Starr (Théo Christine) and Kool Shen (Sandor Funtek) take France by storm with their new sound. They make hip-hop the voice of disenfranchised youth, revolting against rising inequality in an oppressive system.

Director Audrey Estrougo (Jailbirds and By Your Side) masterfully presents a snapshot of the beginnings of the group from Seine-Saint-Denis, through to Suprême NTM’s first concert at the Zénith in 1992. The film highlights the gritty, dark and sometimes violent style of the band who harnessed their hardcore approach to speak out against racism and later advocate for non-violent protest.

Pre-production for Authentik took place during the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, which inspired both Christine and Funtek in their portrayal of the revolutionary leads. Supervised by NTM themselves, this film is France’s Straight Outta Compton.

WAITING FOR BOJANGLES EN ATTENDANT BOJANGLES

Spirited and eccentric, Waiting for Bojangles is a passionate love story adapted from Olivier Bourdeaut’s international bestselling novel of the same title.

Seen through the eyes of their son, Gary, Camille (Virginie Efira, Sybil, AF FFF20; Madeleine Collins, AF FFF22) and Georges (Romain Duris, Aznavour by Charles and Vernon Subutex, AF FFF20) dance to their favourite song Mr Bojangles in their magnificent Parisian flat. Waiting For Bojangles is a whimsical and melancholic tale of un amour fou, bright and tender, an enchanting film with elegant cinematography. Audiences should come prepared with tissues in hand. Efira and Duris craft exceptional performances, so intimate their love story feels like your own, making their inevitable heartbreak all the more tragic.

ANAÏS IN LOVE LES AMOURS D’ANAÏS

Anaïs in Love is a sensual, funny and endearing French romantic comedy. Young Anais (Anaïs Demoustier, Alice and the Mayor, AF FFF20) begins an affair with a much older man (Denis Podalydès, Sorry Angel, AF FFF19) but finds herself falling for his wife (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Paris etc, AF FFF18). This ménage à trois elegantly navigates fantasy, sensuality and melancholy in a film that grows in intensity with each passing minute.

Reminiscent of an Eric Rohmer or Greta Gerwig film, composer Nicolas Piovani takes the audience on a nostalgic journey from Paris to Normandy, the score of violin and cello compositions complimenting this polished yet slightly old-fashioned exploration of romance. Comic situations abound in Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet’s sparkling debut feature, with writing that draws sincere and captivating performances from Podalydès as a man out of his depth and Tedeschi as a woman on the edge of awakening.

Selected for Cannes Critics’ Week, Anaïs in Love paints a wacky but sensitive portrait of an indecisive young woman, a devilishly seductive tale in which the laws of desire and the quest for identity are intertwined.

A TALE OF LOVE AND DESIRE UNE HISTOIRE D’AMOUR ET DE DESIR

Heralded as one of the major discoveries of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, writer/director Leyla Bouzid’s (As I Open My Eyes) enchanting and seductive romance depicts a university student torn between his desire for a classmate and his deeply-held ideals of cultural and social propriety.

Ahmed (the remarkable Sami Outalbali, Sex Education) is a talented 18-year-old Algerian from the outer Parisian suburbs, who has received a grant to study literature at the prestigious Sorbonne. Though the same city, it’s a disorientingly foreign world for the conservative Ahmed, and he is rattled by the discovery of a rich canon of ancient, erotic Arabic texts in his new surroundings, works in which he recognises a reflection of his own secret yearnings.

Ahmed has been struck by the beautiful Farah (magnetic discovery Zbeida Belhajamor), a vibrant Tunisian student who exudes curiosity and has fully embraced the freedoms and opportunity of studying in a new city. Ahmed is both overwhelmed with desire and afraid to surrender to his impulses…

Intelligent and engaging with its themes of identity, courtship and romantic expectations, Bouzid’s thoughtful and surprising fable of young love is a romance with a difference, celebrating passion and curiosity, culture and desire.

Public radio presenter Sara (Binoche) and Jean (Lindon) are in love, and have been living together for a decade. Their relationship has been relatively secure, even surviving a stint in prison by Jean for shady business dealings. One day, seemingly out of the blue, François returns to Paris and contacts Jean, suggesting he come work for him; he’s starting an agency for sports stars and wants Jean’s expertise in identifying talent. When Sara first sees Francois again - in the distance, across a carpark - she’s overcome with emotion. Soon, things rapidly spiral out of control…

In this psychological thriller in the Hitchcockian tradition, Virginie Efira (Bye Bye Morons, AF FFF21) deftly embodies the troubled personality of Madeleine Collins, a woman living a double life, whose identity cracks under the weight of her own lies.

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS OUISTREHAM

Juliette Binoche (How to Be a Good Wife, AF FFF20) stars in this immersive drama based on French journalist Florence Aubenas’ bestselling non-fiction book, Le Quai de Ouistreham (The Night Cleaner).

Marianne (Binoche), a writer posing as a cash-strapped divorcée who needs work, is hired as a cabin cleaner on a ferry boat at the port of Ouistreham which serves the city of Caen. Marianne’s disquiet grows as she forms a tight bond with her co-workers, all the while secretly taking notes on them. She then faces the awful situation of having to confess to her new friends that she has been using their life stories as raw material for her book.

Juliette Binoche shines in the lead role but the film is stolen by the non-professional actors who form the rest of the cast, led by the sincere and realistic performance of Hélène Lambert. This brave choice by Director Emmanuel Carrère accentuates the documentary aspects of the film and brings with it a welcome humanity. With generosity and humour, they embody the shadow workers despised by society.

Opening the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the Cannes Festival 2021, Between Two Worlds invites us to reflect on the ethics of character, trust, friendship and journalistic practice.

The remarkable Vincent Lindon (At War, AF FFF19; Rodin, AF FFF18), reunites with acclaimed writer/director Stéphane Brizé (Diane Has the Right Shape, AF FFF18; At War, AF FFF19) for the stunning Another World, delivering a powerhouse turn as a driven white-collar manager torn between duty to his job, his family and his principles.

Lindon plays Philippe Lemesle, an executive who oversees the regional factory of an industrial multi-national. He has dedicated his life to the company, balancing relations with his employees while placating his bosses and their American overlords. But it’s come at a high personal cost - he and partner Anne (Sandrine Kiberlain, Sweetheart, AF FFF20 and In Safe Hands, AF FFF19) are separating, and his relationship with troubled son Lucas (In the Name of the Land’s Anthony Bajon, AF FFF20) is also collapsing. So when the already-frayed Philippe is tasked by management with a downsizing operation, he faces a major crisis of conscience.

Harnessing the humanist spirit of Ken Loach, Brizé’s intimate and emotionally engaging film is a clear-eyed look at the pressures of modern society. Lindon is truly astounding, finding empathy and pathos as a man backed into a corner, but who decides to fight back. He - and the film - is a knockout.

PAUL W.R.’S LAST JOURNEY LE DERNIER VOYAGE DE PAUL W.R.

In his first feature, director Romain Quirot creates a unique futuristic film, defying current French cinematic trends. Blade Runner meets Mad Max; 2001: A Space Odyssey meets Don’t Look Up! Flying cars, GPS spiders and a desolate backdrop with a soundtrack that carries the film to the next level.

In the post-apocalyptic wasteland, a red moon has appeared in the sky and is excessively exploited for its energy resources. Suddenly the red moon changes its course and threatens the earth’s existence. The only hope of saving earth and humanity is the enigmatic Paul W.R., the most talented astronaut of his generation. But a few hours before the start of the Great Mission, Paul disappears…

This high-concept jaunt through the galaxy features the best of what French cinema has to offer, acting that would feel at home in our everyday lives but coupled with direction that will inspire audiences with ambitious and beautifully-crafted worlds. Paul W.R.’s Last Journey is an ode to the fun of the 80s that feels fresh and original to the sci-fi genre. It’s excitement that’s not to be missed.

KOMPROMAT KOMPROMAT

Based on incredible true events, Jérôme Salle’s (The Odyssey, AF FFF19) gripping new spy thriller depicts the remarkable story of a French public servant who unwittingly found himself in conflict with one of the modern era’s most powerful and dangerous forces: Russia’s FSB.

2019 AF FFF guest (and audience favourite) Gilles Lellouche stars as Mathieu, a gregarious and dedicated diplomat who accepts a posting to Irkutsk as the head of Siberia’s Alliance Française. He hopes the change will be good for his family and struggling marriage, but before long Mathieu’s staging of cultural events and support of artistic expression sees him fall afoul of local authorities. Accused of a terrible crime, he soon realises someone has fabricated a case with Russia’s Federal Security Service; he has been framed. Arrested, imprisoned and isolated, Mathieu has nowhere to turn. Defending himself is impossible, the French authorities are helpless… it seems he has no choice: to try and escape.

With top-notch direction and excellent performances by its entire cast (including Cold War’s fabulous Joanna Kulig) and featuring several pulse-pounding setpieces to rival the best of Bourne, Kompromat is high-octane French cinema at its most compelling and entertaining. See it before the inevitable and likely inferior Hollywood remake!

MALI TWIST TWIST À BAMAKO

Robert Guédiguian (Gloria Mundi, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Marius and Jeannette) sets his youthful 1960s love story Mali Twist against the backdrop of the febrile atmosphere of post-Colonial Mali, amongst youngsters dancing to rock and roll music and ‘the twist’.

French actors Alicia Da Luz Gomes and Stéphane Bak (Farewell to the Night, AF FFF20) co-star as a spirited young woman, who wants to escape her arranged marriage, and a young socialist whose paths collide in the capital, Bamako. Mali Twist tells a story about dreams of political renewal and independence.

With beautiful cinematography, inspired by the photography of Seydou Keita and Malick Sidibe, Mali Twist is a time capsule that explores a lesser-known side of Mali’s history. This juxtaposition of nostalgia and tragedy gives way to intimate imagery of two young people experiencing freedom and loss simultaneously.

Against a backdrop of change, audiences are treated to a unique blast from the past where iconic 60’s hits punctuate the naivety of youth and reality of politics. This powerful love story captures a country torn between tradition and revolution.

MEMORY BOX MEMORY BOX

Memory Box is an exceptional Canadian-Lebanese-French film, written and directed by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige.

Maia, a single mother, lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter Alex. On Christmas Eve, they receive an unexpected delivery: notebooks, cassettes, and photographs, sent by Maia, between the ages of 13 and 18, from 1980s Beirut, to her best friend who had left for Paris to escape the war. Maia refuses to open this Pandora’s Box or confront its memories, but Alex can’t resist its siren call. The stories (fact or fiction?) of her mother’s tumultuous adolescence, first love and the murderous war that surrounded her, uncover previously well-kept secrets.

Well-known for their experimental techniques, the filmmaking duo used Hadjithomas’s own journals and tapes covering 1982 to 1988 and Joreige’s photographs of the Lebanese civil war to mix imagination and reality.

The film had its worldwide premiere at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival in March 2021.

THE VELVET QUEEN LA PANTHÈRE DES NEIGES

A magnificent ode to nature, a film that suspends time, set to the sublime music of Warren Willis and Nick Cave.

The Velvet Queen explores the awe-inspiring landscapes of Tibet and the unpredictable journeys of its inhabitants. Wolves, bears, yaks, birds and the mythic snow leopard come to life on the big screen.

High up on the Tibetan plateau, lie untouched landscapes of unmatched beauty. Amongst unexplored and inaccessible valleys, filmmaker Marie Amiguet (La vallée des Loups) accompanies renowned nature photographer Vincent Munier and writer Sylvain Tesson on an adventure, in search of the snow leopard. For several weeks, they’ll explore these valleys encountering unique animals and searching for the elusive snow leopard that very rarely, if ever, reveals itself to humankind.

The Velvet Queen provides audiences with the atmospheric experience of a hunt without weapons, as we follow particularly Munier’s obsession to capture the holy grail of the animal kingdom. The documentary feels simultaneously like a test of human patience and a celebration of slowness. Escapism that is grounded in the reality of the natural world.

LITTLE NICHOLAS’ TREASURE LE TRÉSOR DU PETIT NICOLAS

From writer/director Julien Rappeneau (Rosalie Blum, Of Love & Lies), this charming and hilarious comedy is a lavish big-screen adventure featuring author René Goscinny (Asterix) and illustrator Jean-Jacques Sempé’s beloved character, a young boy with limitless curiosity and a dangerously overactive imagination.

France, early 1960s. In the idyllic world of 9-year-old Nicholas (adorable newcomer Ilan Debrabant), there is Papa (Rouve), Mom (Lamy), his school and - most importantly - his ragtag group of friends. Mischievous and inseparable, they call themselves ‘The Invincibles’, and life couldn’t be better.

But when his father receives a sought-after promotion and announces that the family must move to the South of France, it’s the worst news imaginable. Nicholas simply can’t fathom life without his pals, and neither can they. Before long a plan is afoot to prevent this terrible relocation…

As fun-loving as its namesake, Little Nicholas’ Treasure captures the magic of childhood and the values of both family and true friendship. With an all-star ensemble cast including Grégory Gadebois and Jean-Pierre Darroussin, this wildly entertaining film will strike a chord with all audiences

PIL’S ADVENTURES PIL

Pil's Adventures tells the story of a little orphan girl, living on the streets of the medieval city, Roc-en-Brume. Alongside her three pet weasels, she survives by stealing food from the castle of the sinister regent Tristain, who has overthrown the King.

One day, to escape the guards who are chasing her, Pil disguises herself by putting on a princess dress. From there she embarks on a mad and delirious quest with Crobar, a big clumsy guard who thinks she’s a noble, and Rigolin, a crackpot young jester, to save Roland, the rightful heir to the throne, who has been cursed and magically transformed into a cat/chicken hybrid.

From the Cursed Forest to the were-unicorn’s lair, Pil and her unlikely companions will live the greatest adventure of all and find the family they never had. With many twists and turns, their quest turns the whole kingdom upside down and teaches Pil that nobility can be found in all of us. Humour, adventure and magic are at the heart of this family film animation.

Bienvenue to another exciting journey through the culturally diverse and thought-provoking French and Francophone cinematographic landscape. You will laugh, cry and be thrilled by the high quality of this year’s line-up exploring themes of the condition humaine et joie de vivre. Please explore with me the many exciting films, including the tumultuous 19th century world of literary and political intrigue in Lost Illusions. It is based on Honoré de Balzac’s novel and features one of my favourite actors, Cécile de France.Waiting for Bojangles, adapted from the novel by Olivier Bordeaut and featuring the talented Virginie Efira and Romain Duris, is a beautifully touching and moving story of amour fou as seen through the young and innocent eyes of their son. You will be inspired, in these sometimes challenging times, by Cédric Klapisch’s film Rise which reminds us of the insatiable need to celebrate art and culture, to reinvent ourselves and keep dancing.Bon festival !

What a wonderful time of the year it is when the Alliance Française French Film Festival returns to Melbourne! This year, the largest French Film festival in the world outside France has again lined up a fabulous array of films that will suit every taste.Personally, I look forward to discovering new movies, such as Fly Me Away (the closing night film, in partnership with the Bastille Day French Festival), The Fantastic Journey of Margot & Marguerite (an enchanting adventure story about time travel) or The Kitchen Brigade (an inspiring tale of social inclusion). We need to renew our appreciation and gratitude to the whole network of the Alliances Françaises in Australia who deliver such rich and diverse programming every year, and especially the Melbourne team who has managed to survive the longest lockdown in the world and still bring us the magic of French cinema with such enthusiasm and passion. Tous nos vœux de succès pour cette 33ème édition du Festival du Film !
