PRINCIPAL’S FAREWELL Our school is tucked away on the bend of a river, on a site that was once a special area for the Wurundjeri people, then a market garden, then a tip, then a co-educational school. For the last twenty years it has been home to Melbourne Girls’ College. It is between the Birrarung and a boulevard constructed during the depression of the ‘20s to provide much needed employment after the war. It is a special place, whether in the misty chill of an early morning, or at the end of the day when the slant of the sun’s rays illuminates the gumtrees most beautifully. It is a place where staff and girls talk, work and learn together, and where the next generation is supported to take tentative, sometimes faltering, steps into adulthood.

The new school song, written this year by Deborah Cheetham OA, says it is a place where “lifelong friendships” are formed, where girls learn “how to shape a world” and where “a part of us remains”. Deborah consulted with a group of current and past students and staff to develop these lyrics.

This year 220 girls finish their time at MGC, as do I. The school has enriched my life by providing me with glorious opportunities to exercise my chosen profession and to form lifelong friendships. I wish the new Melbourne Girls’ College Principal, Karen Money, all the best as she takes on the stewardship of this wonderful community.

Judy CrowePrincipal (2002-2014)

It has been twelve years since Judy Crowe joined Melbourne Girls’ College and during this time she has sent a very clear message to our girls that they should lead and achieve by forging their unique pathway beyond the school gates. Judy has certainly left her legacy at MGC and has been a formidable advocate for both public and girls’ education. Often described as fearless and entrepreneurial she has set the bench mark high for us all and is an excellent role model for our students.

We recognise and remember Judy as being both the artist who creates a vision and the craftsman who designs and builds it. Very few leaders exhibit both of these qualities which have manifested themselves in the ambitious building projects that we see today. These projects benefit our students, parents and staff and contribute to making MGC an exemplary public school. Yet these strengths go deeper than mere bricks and mortar as they inspire the community around her to improve their practices as well. Judy is known for her ability to identify and nurture the talents of staff and students alike and she creates leadership teams that challenge what is ordinary to create the extraordinary.

It has been a privilege to have worked closely with Judy over many years as her Assistant Principals. Having assigned ourselves the name “Dream Team” some years ago, we have begun each day with a morning coffee and chat which will be greatly missed. We also fondly remember the many assemblies where we dressed up in an array of costumes ranging from Harry Potter’s Dumbledore, Professor Trelawney and Professor McGonagall to our most recent incarnation of the Three Amigos. We wish Judy well in her new role as President of VASSP. This is not goodbye, but see you soon.

Linda Brown & Kay Clarke

One major focus has obviously been to replace our principal Judith Crowe, who over twelve years has guided and inspired thousands of students and staff. The space here does not permit an adequate account of Judy’s contribution to the school, but in any event it would be very difficult for me to express this sufficiently. Her impact has been simply extraordinary. It was gratifying, however, that once we advertised the role of principal for 2015 and beyond, we were able to attract a large, very high quality field of candidates. This reflects positively upon the manner in which MGC is viewed by the broader education community. After a rigorous process it was pleasing to be able to announce Karen Money as the 2015 principal. Karen is a highly skilled and passionate school leader who I am confident can continue to build upon Judy’s great work.

Gary FunstonCouncil President

The Parents’ Association has been busy again this year with a number of social and fundraising events that have enabled MGC parents to meet and greet and raise funds that contribute to the education of our girls here at MGC.

This year the events have included the welcome back morning tea for staff, the International Women’s Day event, the Trivia Night, the Dad & Daughter Breakfast and the school raffle. Over $25,000 has been raised so far. Some of this money has already been allocated in the first round of grants to teachers and students to support a diverse range of interests including a Youth Parliament camp, jewellery design, yoga and a sound system in the MGC fitness centre.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATIONOur organisation wouldn’t function without the generosity and dedication of some fabulous parents who volunteer their time to sit on the PA and help plan and run activities. Also we appreciate the generosity of MGC parents and the wider community in attending these events, donating, sponsoring, buying tickets and giving time to help. Thank you all so much.

Being on the PA is a great way to meet the parents of girls in other year levels, to know what’s happening in the school, to get to know the teachers and to contribute where you can. Please feel welcome to join in.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS

2014 has been another great year of leadership and achievement for Melbourne Girls’ College students, as well as a very busy year for your college council. Much of council’s focus has been on the big picture issues that will impact on MGC in coming years. There are many factors that will influence the funding available to the college, the physical facilities at our disposal and the composition of our student population. These need to be carefully considered as the council develops broad plans and policies to maximise the opportunities available to all our girls.

College Captains’ Report 2014

This year we have been incredibly privileged to have such hard workers on the Senior School Executive, enabling productivity of the highest quality. This has led to the success of events such as the Executive Theme Day: “MGC Turns Hollywood,” Multicultural Week and Harmony Day Assembly. In 2014 many of our Executive Portfolios have grown and progressed. The Philanthropy Club has advanced exponentially by involving the school in an increased and more diverse range of activities. Maths, Science, SRC, Sports and Arts teams have all worked hard to put together activities that incorporate the views of all students. The Public Relations team has also been incredible in developing the leadership and public speaking skills of our girls through the Junior Ambassador Program. Overall, 2014 has been an incredible year of development and we cannot wait to see the changes that will transpire in the years to come.

Middle School Executive Report 2014

Together as a group we have created a positive and supportive team culture. We have organised many effective fundraising activities such as bake stalls, fruit stalls and the Friends of the Hudad (FOTH) day. Funds from these events went to Challenge Kids with Cancer, the MGC student Foundation and FOTH. The individual teams within the MS Executive have arranged some incredible events. We have worked within our portfolios and with our Senior School Captains, as well as supporting each other. Every student in the MS Executive should be very proud of what has been achieved this year and should be congratulated for their contribution to school life.

2014 at 414 Squadron Melbourne Girls’ College saw twenty new and eager members join the cadet program. In March we attended our first camp of the year, a training camp at RAAF Williams Air Base where students learnt about the RAAF, aviation and even had the opportunity to fly a Cessna or an Aerobatic plane. It was a great opportunity for students to experience firsthand the way an active Air Base operates. Our next camp was in Beaconsfield, an outdoor camp where first year cadets established their own campsite and participated in activities such as rogaining, orienteering and night walks. Second year cadets participated in a survival simulation activity in which it was their responsibility to create a shelter, gather food and procure water for themselves, putting the skills learnt in class to use. They also had the opportunity to learn valuable skills such as traps and first aid. Between camps students were engaged in weekly classes which ranged from Service Knowledge, Field craft, Survival and First Aid, all of which they put to practical use in the field. Our third and final camp will be held in December in Gembrook where students will be taken through a multitude of fun activities such as obstacle courses, sailing, high ropes courses and white water canoeing. We finish the year with a formal dinner in which awards are presented and parents are able to see all that their daughters have achieved throughout their year in the Melbourne Girls’ College cadet program.

PI Day And Maths Games

Pi Day, pun intended, was one of the biggest events the Maths Team organised for 2014. The goal was to promote Maths from a more enjoyable perspective. Captains Crystal Lee and Julia Ly organised a fun Friday lunch event for everyone to watch and enjoy. The winners of the Pi Day event were respectively, Round Two: Year 12 team; Round One: Teacher Team; Round 1: Year 9 team. Congratulations everyone! All in all, the annual Pi Day event was a huge success.

MGC Maths Games Day

Over eighty students participated in this unforgettable day. The adventure began with a series of mind-boggling questions that puz-zled many and progressed to strategic games that required logical and lateral thinking. Last but not least, we held a Maths Relay that not only tested our intellectual abilities, but also our physical endurance. All in all, it was a great experience and a huge success. Congratulations to Melbourne High School for coming first.

Chinese Cultural Day

The Chinese Culture Day was the first culture day in MGC that I attended, and I must say that it was a really entertaining and well-coordinated program. There were many interesting performances. Unfortunately I had to miss the fan dance segment due to a class, but hopefully I’ll have a chance to see it again next time. My favorite was the acrobat performance: I was genuinely amazed by the skills displayed. It was a really nice day overall.

Sheryl Soemarko 11 Lyons 2

I liked all of the activities! I had a great day! I think next year each student could have the option to bring in $10 -20 for a Chinese lunch. It was a really fun day and I would like to do it again!

Annie Coleman 8 Chisholm 2

I really liked Mrs. Lee’s acrobat performance because she was very entertaining and funny. She interacted with the audience very well. The lion dance was most fascinating to watch. I feel that I now have a deeper understanding of the Chinese lion tale. The lady who did the Kungfu performance was amazing, the way she explained the detail in the movements was extraordinary. Ms. Chen’s performance was the best!

Trisha Ku 11 Melba 1

I had a really fun experience. I learnt Chinese history and I loved the part where they taught us how to do the lion dance!

ROWINGSeven months, 364 training sessions, 3000 kilometres of training, 500 hours on the ergo, litres of sweat and many great times! That’s what the MGC rowers have gone through during the 2013-14 season. They did this knowing that those four other people in their boat were doing the same; pushing themselves, challenging themselves. That is the rowing family.

The ‘family’ theme of the MGC Rowing Club was quite strong this season, in both the motivational aspect as well as a support network. The Year 12s who rowed this season were a huge part of establishing the idea of the rowing family and they have left the program in fantastic shape.

yr 10The year started up in the Victorian High Country where the girls participated in a range of team building and wellbeing activities at the picturesque Camp Howqua. Here ideas flourished for the Community Challenge where tutorial groups have now gone on to support a range of causes with enthusiasm.

Back at school, over the course of the year, the girls have continued to make the most of the experiences and opportunities that have been on offer.

The Mock Job Interviews provided the opportunity for interview techniques to be fine-tuned with each of the girls involved walking away from the invaluable experience with confidence and positivity.

The Shape Your Destiny Workshop motivated students to set goals and find focus and direction both at school and beyond.

Leadership opportunities such as The All Girls Leadership Conference and the Rosie Respect Launch have inspired the girls to continue to make their mark as leaders at MGC and citizens of the world.

We congratulate the Year 10s of 2014 on a wonderful year as we continue to admire their artwork that adorns the corridors and remember the tunes they sang in the school production.

2014 has been a very eventful year for the environment team, with projects from Sustainability Week to the Pedal Powered Cinema being held in and out of this school. The Pedal Powered Cinema was a massive success, with students and parents coming from all over town to watch the movie Bran Nue Dae. With a buffet of food available, the Backyard Bike-powered carousel ride and pedal powered coffee machine, it was a fantastic night for all.

Our visit to Jane Goodall was inspiring. A group of more than thirty of us took the train to Geelong to see her speak. Our Environment Captain Gina Handby and school Captain Emma Sinclair were proud to have the opportunity of speaking in front of hundreds of other students about our school’s environment initiatives. Jane Goodall told us the story of how she came to be involved with chimpanzees, how we must use the small window of opportunity we have left to make a change for the better in our world and about the significance of the Roots and Shoots program, which our school is also promoting. An honourable mention must be given to the girls from the Kids Teaching Kids program who gave up their time to make a magnificent project about the dangers of micro-beads in our water ways. As busy as it has been, I know that it’s been just as much fun for everyone as it was for us captains. To end, some words from Jane Goodall who was quoting Ghandi:

“Earth provides enough for every man’s need, but not enough for every man’s greed.”

V.E.T. HOSPITALITY

The Senior School Information Evening function that we catered for allowed our VET class members to work collaboratively but also individually on specific tasks within a particular time frame. I really enjoyed creating platters of finger food.

Julia Zwar

Hospitality opens up a world of opportunities - whether it be working in a restaurant as a career or working as a waitress, bartender or a barista while attending school or university.

Phoebe Murray

Through VET I’ve experienced working with people from diverse backgrounds to create meals that are enjoyable for all. I was able to make friends with colleagues as we prepared food together.

Danielle Ann Del Rosario

The MGC aerobics program has had a terrific year once again ...filled with boundless energy from the athletes and plenty of smiles! All of the athletes’ hard work and training has paid off in tremendous results. MGC won the aggregate school competition for the first time in many years, an amazing achievement for the program and its athletes!

This year thirteen girls qualified for the Victorian State Team and travelled to Brisbane in September to compete at the Australian National Championships. Twenty four students qualified for the Australian AEROSkools Championships, also held in Brisbane. We are looking forward to another successful year in 2015!

yr 9Year 9 started off with a bang and a lot of laughs! This has been the first year where students have been able to choose electives other than a language and it’s been fantastic! We could choose from arts, technologies, and even subjects like Outdoor Education and Marine Biology. Every subject was unique and really enjoyable!

What had students excited and nervous from the start was the Year 9 Comedy Night. The girls needed to create a stand-up comedy routine with the help of a professional comedian and had the chance to progress to performing it in front of a full auditorium of parents and students. Some incredibly hilarious acts came out of this unit, with girls feeling more confident and self-assured by the end of it.

During third term our English unit had us learning about our ancestors: the indigenous people of Australia as well as the Holocaust and World War 2. Both topics were very emotional and girls were reduced to tears while hearing the stories of Holocaust survivors. These topics were very rewarding as well as eye opening, and the opportunity to broaden our understanding was greatly valued.

Overall Year 9 has been a challenging year, with each girl facing different struggles: getting up the level three stairs, pushing yourself until your muscles burn in rowing or understanding quadratics in maths, Year 9 has encouraged and prepared us all to thrive and we expect to enjoy senior school next year just as much!

Keeping the existing water wall as required - resurfaced with textured pavement and selection of water resistant hanging shrubs and regular lawn.

While deifning the corner of the square, together with with the water wall, the teired seeting provides a more intimate area for users to sit and eperience the space. Three levels provide varied perspectives all looking over the square.

Nyala -Native shrub

Lomandra australis-Highly water resistant grass

Isolepis noposa -A common Australian grass

Typan antha -Native grass ower

Lomandra hysterix -A common Australian grass

1st North Elevation -

The existing ponds have been ‘greened’ with the addition of an inner water garden bed. While echoing the square’s linear manner, the ponds provide an element of division, dening the walkway. They introduce a natural aesthetic by creating an exotic oasis.

A native selection thats works toward supporting local biodiversity and minimal water usage, echoing the key themes of sustainability of the redesign.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSIn 2014 The MGC International Program has sixty students at the school and nine at English Language Centres. The girls mostly come from countries in our region: China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia; and we also have one student from Iran.

The girls choose to study in Australia to experience a different educational environment and to develop a broader cultural understanding to prepare them for success in the next stage of life. They hope to engage in rewarding extra-curricular opportunities and build lasting relationships with the diverse population of local girls as well as other internationals.

YEAR 11 FORMAL 2014

52 53

Year 12 The formal was just terrific from start to finish! Firstly the planning process was really rewarding. The Year 12 SRC worked hard on preparations throughout the term and on the night, organising the photo booths, awards, sashes, trophies, photographers and the table decorations. We liked working with the year level and hearing their feedback on our ideas to make improvements. The night itself came together brill iantly: it was really nice to see everyone, teachers included, letting their hair down, kicking off their shoes (quite literally!) and taking a break from the stresses that this year has present ed to us all. The food was delectable and we l ooked like models in our beautiful dresses: hair and make-up perfect and generally dolled up to the nines. Oh yeah, I guess the dates scrubbed up pretty well too! I think the highl ight for most of us was seeing some of the teachers hit the dance floor and get their boogie happening. What a night to remember!

ART TRIP TO

MONA

In Term 3 twenty Visual Arts and Media students visited Tasmania for four days with Ms Tilley and Mr Dunscombe. We flew in to a wet and windy welcome and toured local art galleries and museums including the world famous MONA and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. We also spent a cold but exciting day at Port Arthur, which included a ghost tour. The trip was inspiring to all and was a great opportunity to bond and make new friendships. On the final day we spent a beautiful winter’s morning exploring Salamanca Market before flying home to Melbourne.
