ICOM INSIDER

HappyGRADUATIONDAY

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatu

As another year goes by, I reflect on the great privilege I have had to lead such a prestigious institution. ICOM’s aim will always be to edu-cate, nurture and encourage our children to grow up to be young men and women who will succeed and excel in all pursuits in life. Success includes achieving excellence in both academia and Islamic education without underestimating the great importance of values too. Insha’Allah this will help them to attain success in both this world and the next. As the students, staff and parents commence every morning at the daily morning assembly, it’s a reminder that the day will be filled with blessed and enriched learning that will enable our students to be successful learners, creative individuals and active in-formed citizens.

Masha’Allah, every year the college seems to see greater numbers of enrolment applica-tions. With the college being unable to take any further enrolments for 2020, the number of student enrolments for 2021 is estimated to be close to 1400. Even though the college under-stands the needs of parents wanting to enroll their children at our college, the college is un-able to accommodate every enrolment request received.

The college introduced a clear structure this year in the Secondary School, by separating Junior Sec-ondary (Year 7 to 9) and Senior Secondary (Year 10 to 12). Before school commenced this year, there was significant construction works and a double story structure was built for Senior Secondary. This provided the Senior Secondary students with their own space tailored to assist in their final years of schooling at ICOM.

This year there were also a number of new pro-grams introduced. The first one was the Quran Memorisation Academy for selected students. The program was designed to cater for Quran ad-vanced students, which serves to help them revise memorized surahs and to memorise new surahs. The ultimate goal of the program is the memoriza-tion and Hifz of the whole Quran.

The Tournament of Minds was introduced this year which included the students from Year 5 to Year 8. The Tournament of Minds is a program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years that encourages problem solving skills. The aim is to inspire the student’s potential by devel-oping a range of skills including creativity, time management, and working collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.

An important program that the college is proud of continuing with is the Orphan Sponsorship Pro-gram. Every year the college raises money to cover the annual sponsorship of 13 orphans so that every year level at the college sponsors an orphan. Alhamdulilah this year the college and the Student Representative Council organised a number of fundraising initiatives to cater for this.

During the Term 1 break, the college had 11 stu-dents and 2 ICOM teachers attend the annual Um-rah Program. The students and staff spent a total of 10 days visiting significant landmarks in Makkah and Madinah. With the continuing success of this program, it continues to encourage our students to increase their relationship with Allah (SWT) and the knowledge of our beautiful religion, Islam.

Term 2 commenced with the Year 7 & 9 stu-dents attending camp for 3 days. The students attended different campsites which included the Summit, Camp Jungai and Camp Eildon. The Students enjoyed their time outside of the normal school setting with a great range of activities including rock climbing, team building activities, a bonfire and more.

For the first time at ICOM the Year 6 students attended a camp. Our year 6 students spent a five-day camp in Canberra where they visited numerous sites including the High Court of Aus-tralia, a guided tour of both the Royal Mint and Government House and the Australian Institute of Sports. It was a beneficial and successful camp where the students came back home with an increased knowledge of their capital city.

Every year, the college embraces the return of Ramadan. The spirit of Ramadan is always felt at the college, with beautiful decorations, Ramadan quizzes, special performances and the annual student/staff iftars. This year the college held several iftars and a Qiyam night. On the first day of Ramadan there was a special surprise for our students with a visit from the Ramadan Man and a special guest, a beautiful and very friendly camel. A photographer came on the day to take photos of our students with both the Ramadan Man and the camel.

Another major event that occurred in Term 2 & 3 was the Annual Quran Competition. The number of students who participated in the competition was astonishing. Students were expected to memorise the selected surah for their year level and were critiqued on 3 aspects: fluency, Tajweed and performance. The final round of testing was held and the winners were announced during morning assembly, then awarded with a special gift and trophy at the Annual Quran Competition Awards night in Term 3.

While encouraging students to be their best aca-demically, the college also encourages students to be physically active too. Students participated in a variety of interschool sporting activities with other schools in the state. A number of these interschool sport programs were: • The Islamic Schools Sports Carnival for Futsal

and Basketball • The SSV Interschool Sports Competition for

Soccer • The Senior SSV State Finals for Table Tennis• The Bachar Houli Cup• The Winter Sports Gala for Soccer and AFL• Senior Cricket Competition

In addition to that, the College celebrated suc-cessful and eventful number of weeks and days throughout the year including: Athletics days, Mul-ticultural day, Literacy week, Character day, Year 4 sleepover, STEM week, Arabic week, Hajj week, Footy day, R U Ok day and many other successful events

With the vast number of initiatives and achieve-ments so far this year, you can continuously see the progress the college makes every year. With the increasing number of students, the college has increased its activities and ideas to ensure stu-dents are constantly engaged during their school-ing at ICOM.

Insha’Allah I hope to see all ICOM’s students, par-ents and staff next year and thank you all for your continued support.

2019 Year 12 Graduation Night

Page 4 - ICOM Insider | TERM 4 ISSUE 8

The Islamic college of Melbourne celebrated its second year 12 graduation on Friday, 29 November 2019. Graduates of ICOM, embarked upon a roller coaster journey of what is Year 12.

For many in the group it was a navigation to find their way, strengths and shine. In the end it was truly a journey of self-discovery and growth for each and every individual.

My message to you all is to be proud of what you have achieved.Explore your options, an ATAR is important but it does not define you and what you are capable of.Do what you enjoy and are good at and never let go of your Islamic Identity.

Year 5 and Year 6 Girls Basketball and Futsal Good morning and assalamualaikum students, teachers and staff, today I will be talking about the grade 5 and 6’s Futsal tournament. Yesterday, grade 5 students Fatima Haddara, Yasmin Wadhies, Nour Chehade, Jenean Taha and Muntaha El Kurdi and grade 6 students Yasmine Haddara, Yasmine Al Nachar, Admira Ali, Ayah Kaddour and I went to Coburg to play against 9 different Islamic schools and came proudly back with the cup. Out of all 9 games, we have scored in total, believe it or not, 55 goals and conceded 6, quite a great achievement.

I would like to thank the PE teachers, especially Mr Sirilas as we wouldn’t have made it this far if it wasn’t for his help and support. Overall, everyone had a great time as a team and was ecstatic that we, once again brought back the cup.

Animal Land Children's Farm Excursion

Page 9 - ICOM Insider | TERM 4| ISSUE 8

On Thursday 14 and Friday 15 of November, the Foundation students went on an excursion to the Animal Land Children’s Farm in Diggers Rest. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and participated in the First-Hand Farming Experience where they were able to see real farm life and learn where their food comes from.

Students absolutely loved the activities which included going on a tractor ride and a pony ride, hand milking cows, making butter in a churn – which we got to taste on some crackers. The students nursed baby animals and fed the ducks, goats and sheep. All the students also participated in seed planting and farm sports. It was a great hands on experience and the students had a wonderful time.

Secondary Library News

Our library is a portal to the past, well at least to a certain extent. One can feel like they have travelled back in time when they pick up and open an old Al-Ma’rifah - ICOM Year Book.

This year, I added more of the past year books to our library collection, and it has been a constant hit with our students. Soon, 2019 will become a part of our past, and we will have the new 2019 Al-Ma’rifah in our collection.

Dear parents and carers,

We need to take special care and supervise young children in traffic.Follow the safe road crossing procedure – STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK.

Whenever possible, cross at a pedestrian crossing, traffic signal or pedestrian refuge. On Wootten Road, there is a pedestrian crossing which has a safety supervisor during school drop off and pick up times. This is where parents and students should safely cross from. Council officers often do random checks at this crossing and may issue infringement notices should people fail to obey the road safety rules.

Time-based school zones operate between 8–9.30am and 2.30–4pm on weekdays during Victoria’s school terms (except for public holidays).

IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT PERFORM A U TURN ON WOOTTEN ROAD OR BUTTERFLY BLVD.

PLEASE ONLY CROSS HERE
