A book report doesn’t have to be that boring!

Book Report Board Game

A book report doesn’t have to be that boring!

This a more creative way to find out how much of the book the student really understands. This can also be used to compliment your already classroom book report assignment.

Steps to Getting Your Class on Their Way Step 1 Brainstorm different types of board games they have played. Talk about what is part of the board game. (Object of the game, game pieces, number of players, board layout-template included but does not have to be used) Step 2 Set the criteria of what the board game must include. Step 3 The game must have a written set of rules for players to understand. Step 4 The game must be organized in a decorated box or container. Step 5 A date can be set where the students can bring their Book Report Board Game and play with other students in class. Step 6 After playing the game students can evaluate using the simple rubric.

Board Game Criteria for Student

The board must relate to a setting(s) in the story.

The playing pieces must represent the

characters in the story. There must be a game of chance as you move

around the board (or by using chance cards). The container or box needs to be decorated and

include the title and author. The rules must be clearly written and included

with the game. An introduction to the book must be attached

to the box or board.

rubric, self-assessment score sheet, and photos of samples!

Book Report Ideas Newspaper Book Report

A book report does not always have to consist of just a summary.

In the form of a newspaper other Language Arts standards can also be used to measure whether the student understands the book.

The students can create their newspaper using the templates provided

Book assignments you may want to have students include on their newspaper template.

-Summary

-Compare and contrast between characters/settings

-Favorite scene

-Character Profile

-Newsworthy events that occurred in the book

-Sequel to the book

-Vocabulary word assignment Ex. Puzzle using Vocabulary Words

-Cause and Effect

-Advertisements related to the story

-Comic strip related to the story

-Letter (Dear Abby Column related to the story or letter to the author)

1. Give each student both templates for their newspaper. (front and

back)

2. Have students name their newspaper. Name should reflect the theme of the book. Ex. For the book Winn Dixie the newspaper can be named The Dixie Gazette or Daily Winn Dixie or The Dixie Reporter.

3. Assign a type of writing for each section of the newspaper. For example:

a. the top two columns will be a summary of the story from two different characters’ points of view

b. the bottom three boxes will be a sequel that the students will create by drawing a comic strip.

c. The middle box will be letters to the author or Dear Abby Column

Do this for each section of the newspaper. This will make grading the newspaper much easier for you.

4. If you would like to give your students creative freedom, then make

a list of all the required elements of the newspaper and let the students decide where to put each part of the newspaper.

5. Mount the newspaper on poster board cut to size to give the newspaper weight. These look great on bulletin boards!

Book Report Ideas Create a Billboard

Book Report Includes billboard templates, billboard

assignment ideas, billboard rubric, writing rubric, self-assessment score sheet, and

photos of samples!

Easy to place around

the classroom!

Billboard Book Report Ideas The goal for this Book Report is to create an exciting

advertisement that catches the eye. It must make other students want to read your book!

Using the templates, here are some Language Arts standards that the student can use to advertise their book.

-Include a catchy phrase

-Poster advertising this awesome book!

- Create props from the book and attach to your billboard or place on top for a 3D effect.

-An exciting introduction

-Summary

-Compare and contrast between characters/settings

-Favorite scene

-Character Profile

-Exciting events that occurred in the book

-Sequel to the book

-Vocabulary word assignment Ex. Puzzle or Quiz using Vocabulary Words

-Cause and Effect

-Advertisements related to parts of the story.

-Comic strip related to the story

- A critic’s reviews and/or comments about the book

Directions

1. Give each student templates for their Billboard. (front and back) The front side of the Billboard must be the main advertisement that needs to stand out to the passer by. Use template 1.

2.The back side of the board will include more of the information about the book. Use template 2.

3. Make a list of all the required elements of the billboard and let the students decide where to put each part on their billboard.

4. Once both sides are complete then students can staple 2 pencil boxes together to create a billboard stand. (See picture). If your school doesn’t use pencil boxes then cardboard is just as good with popsicle stick legs.

5. Remind students that the goal of the billboard is to persuade people to read your book.

6. Once the billboards are all complete have students do a walk through the classroom allowing them to view the Book Report Billboards. Based on the Billboards they can decide and later share which book they feel they would like to read next.

7. This time can also be used for peer evaluation using the student assessment evaluation sheet and to motivate students on choosing their next book to read.

Make a Float

Book Report Think Outside the Box to Make Learning FUN

By Upper LMNtary on TeachersPayTeachers.com

Make a Float Book Report Student Assignment Sheet

*You are going to create a parade float to represent the book you have read. *

*You MAY include one or more of the following elements on your float:

-Characters

-Setting of the main part of the book

-Climax or the most important scene

-Objects important to the character or story

--Be CREATIVE and have FUN!

*Materials to be used:

-The base of the float will be a cereal box on its side with cardboard wheels using brads to attach it to the base (or glue the wheels)

-Anything that you have around the house: toilet paper roll, smaller boxes to add height (granola bar box, pop tart box, etc.), felt, paper cups, construction paper, yarn, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, tissue paper, crepe paper, paint and so on.

*Requirements:

-The box/float must be completely covered

-The top of the cereal box must be left open so that your written report can slide into the float.

-The title of your book and your name must be written clearly on the float

-The float must be 3-dimensional; length, width and height.

-A brief written description of the float on an index card answering these questions:

-Who or what is on your float? Describe your float. Why did you select this particular scene? What was so important/significant about this scene?

By Upper LMNtary on TeachersPayTeachers.com

Make a Float Book Report

Teacher Instructions Students will create a float to represent the book that they have read.

The purpose is to get students writing and thinking about the elements of the book without assigning a traditional boring book report.

They will have so much fun with this project and you will be amazed at the creativity of your students!

1. Show students photos of floats (or Youtube the Rose Parade) so they have an idea of the different ways floats are designed. Discuss and brainstorm some possible elements that could be added to a float to represent the book.

2. Students list/design/sketch a few ideas of their float on paper.

3. Have students bring supplies from home that they would like to use on their float.

Provide your students with materials from your school supply room such as the following:

Construction paper and Poster board scraps, Pipe cleaners, Cotton balls, Tongue depressors/craft sticks, Yarn/ roving, Felt, Brads, Paint, Tissue paper, Newspaper, Tape, Rubber bands, Cotton swabs, etc

-Pretty much anything you can find! Your students will find a creative way to use whatever materials you give them.

By Upper LMNtary on TeachersPayTeachers.com

4. Once everyone has a cereal box and their materials, begin by attaching the wheels of the float. Cut out cardboard or poster board circles (about 3-inch diameter) for the wheels and attach to the sides of the float using brads (glue works also).

5. Have students build up the float using smaller boxes stacked on top of the cereal box for height (great for cityscape - buildings). Students can also tape crumpled up newspaper to the top of the cereal box for a more rounded float (great for a mountain or hill scene)

6. Once the construction of the base of the float is complete, cover the whole base with either paint, tissue paper balls, tissue paper squares with glue, or felt pieces.

7. This is where your students’ creativity takes over. You can either provide time during the day for students to work on their float or send the float home to be completed.

8. HAVE A BOOK REPORT FLOAT PARADE! Call other classes to see!

9. Be sure to have students keep the box open so that the report can be inserted into the float. See picture.

Puppet Theater

By Upper LMNtary

Book Report

Puppet Theater A FUN way to write a Book Report!

Your students will be completely engaged in this fun puppet Theater Book Report. There are a few different ways your students can show what they have learned from a book.

1. Summarize: Students take a story/book that they have read and write a play to summarize the story. Students create a beginning, middle and end for three different Scenes.

2. Alternate Ending: Students take a story/book and write a play with an alternate ending.

3. Sequel: Students take a story/book and write a sequel in the form of a play. A sequel is a continuation of the story using the same characters and usually the same setting.

4. BE CREATIVE: Students can write their OWN plays after reading a story in play format. They choose their own characters and settings, giving them creative freedom.

By Upper LMNtary

Getting Started

1. Students make a list of characters and write a brief description of each. I recommend 3-5 characters.

2. Students describe the setting. Where and when. 3. Students write the

main conflict/problem or plot of the story.

4. Students map out their play by writing a few sentences about what will happen in the beginning, middle and end of the play. The three sections will represent the three scenes/acts. Beginning will be Scene 1, the middle will be Scene 2, and the end will be Scene 3.

5. Students begin writing the dialogue between characters in play format.

Puppets

Students get so excited when they hear that they will be creating puppets for their characters. As students draft their plays, students can begin to create their puppets.

By Upper LMNtary

Materials:

Craft sticks

Construction paper

Felt

Scissors and glue

Markers

Puppet pattern (optional)

Optional: cereal box to create one puppet theater for the class to share

Give students the supplies and puppet pattern and let them be creative!

For best results, students trace the puppet pattern on construction paper or thicker paper.

Students use a white construction paper to draw and color the background for each scene.

Puppet Theater: Teacher makes one for the whole class to use. (Or early finishers can help with this)

Cut out one of the side panels of the cereal box. Cut out the entire side panel. This opening will be where you slide in each background scenery.

Cut out a large rectangle on the front panel of the cereal box leaving

By Upper LMNtary

about a one-inch frame all the way around. This will be the front of the “stage”.

Cover the entire box with black construction paper except the front of the box.

Turn the box on its side and cover the bottom one-inch frame with brown construction paper for the wooden stage floor.

Use red construction paper to create drapes for the frame in the front of the box. I use a black marker to outline the drapes.

The Puppet Show - Performance Day

Give students time to rehearse their plays in small groups.

I set up my puppet theater cereal box under my document camera and project it onto a large screen. No worries if you don’t have a document camera. Just tape the cereal box puppet theater on the whiteboard. Have students tape their background scene to the inside of the cereal box.

and LOTS of Photos of Student Samples!

Pop Up Book Report Easy to Create

Gets Students Motivated to Write The 3 Pop Ups we will create will complement the summary of the students Book Report. One Pop Up scene to represent the beginning, the 2nd to represent the middle, and the 3rd to represent the end of the book. Creating the booklet (See Picture) Fold 2 pieces of colored construction paper (each 18in. x 12in.) placed on top of each other and staple in the center to create a booklet.

Creating the Pop Up Fold a piece of white paper in half. Along the fold make two 1-inch cuts about 1 inch apart. Push out the section of paper that has been cut and fold so it sticks up. This is your first Pop Up. (See Picture) Repeat this so you now have 2 Pop Ups on the white paper.

Placing Down the Index Cards The student can now choose which part of the scene they wish to have Pop Up. Using an index card they can draw, color it, and glue it down on the Pop Up tab (or staple). Students may choose to draw a character, building, or an animal etc. Once the student has placed the 2nd card down as their pop up, they can now draw the remainder of the setting on the rest of the white paper. The summary is now ready to be written and finally stapled in. Continue these steps with the middle part of the summary and the ending. For the next Pop Ups, allow students to be more creative, maybe creating 3 Pop Ups, or larger ones. Note: A more simplified version would be just to create 1 Pop Up with a summary
