"Man In The Mirror"
I'm Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It's Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .
As I, Turn Up The Collar On My
Favourite Winter Coat
This Wind Is Blowin' My Mind
I See The Kids In The Street,
With Not Enough To Eat
Who Am I, To Be Blind?
Pretending Not To See
Their Needs
A Summer's Disregard,
A Broken Bottle Top
And A One Man's Soul
They Follow Each Other On
The Wind Ya' Know
'Cause They Got Nowhere
To Go
That's Why I Want You To
Know
I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
I'm Asking Him To Change
His Ways
And No Message Could Have
Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
(If You Wanna Make The
World A Better Place)
Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change

I've Been A Victim Of A Selfish
Kind Of Love
It's Time That I Realize
That There Are Some With No
Home, Not A Nickel To Loan
Could It Be Really Me,
Pretending That They're Not
Alone?
A Widow Deeply Scarred,
Somebody's Broken Heart
And A Washed-Out Dream
(Washed-Out Dream)
They Follow The Pattern Of
The Wind, Ya' See
Cause They Got No Place
To Be
That's Why I'm Starting With
Me

I. INTRODUCTION - The song "Man In the Mirror" is a gritty and revealing
account of human nature verses human suffering and the ability within all
humans to help stop this tragedy. This essay analyzes the impact and influence
a song has in a contemporary context based on its literary devices and cultural
references.
II. BODY – The popularity, importance and personal connection with “Man In the
Mirror”.
A. “Man In the Mirror” Popularity.
1. Michael Jackson was a "symbol" of the American Dream but instead
of talking about prosperity he focused on hunger, poverty, and the pain
of the forgotten. His notoriety helped him influence millions of people
to look beyond themselves to help the hurting.
2. Garrett like Michael had the ear of the public and opened them to the
truth about hurting people by creating "Man In The Mirror". The song
symbolized the willful ignorance of the prosperous in the face of
poverty stricken.
B. “Man In the Mirror” Importance.
1. The man in the mirror is symbolic of both self and humanity. The
change begins with a single person and when that person helps to
change a life than humanity itself slowing changes. Those in poverty
both worldwide and national were the focus in the 1980s thanks to
"Man In The Mirror".

Comment [WU2]: This is not a proper thesis. The thesis must state the song title, singer/songwriter and the focus on the song’s cultural impact through figurative language: “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson reaches to the heart of many people through its theme, imagery, and symbolism. Do you see the difference between this attempted thesis and yours?
Comment [WU3]: You only have one main topic?

C. “Man In the Mirror” Personal Connection.
1. The phrase "a victim of a selfish kind of love" is ironic because the
well off and the self-absorbed do not see themselves as victims but as
victors in the game of life. They enjoy themselves while Michael is
pointing out that they are victims and need to realize the devastating
poverty that others endure.
2. Social-psychological influences for change.
III. CONCLUSION
A. Analytical summary.
B. The basest of human nature can be changed by the simple words of a song
such as “Man In the Mirror” to make someone else’s life better.
C. The human spirit is powerful and can be awakened to goodness through
the simple words of a profound song which helps compassion grow.
Comment [WU4]: The conclusion is not a summary.
