• Set up ‘FAB Lab’ with the help of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA
in year 2009. Later FAB LAB further strengthened.
• Fab lab has facilities for basic mechanical as well as digital fabrication with
precision.
Community Workshops • Established 42 community workshops in 19 states, at the premises of
seasoned innovators so that other grassroots innovators of the region can have
access to fabrication facilities and also learn from the experiences of such
innovators.

Scouting through Media
• Identified Interested Journalists/Stringers

Shodh Sankal
•To strengthen lateral learning among the grassroots innovators, the concept of Shodh Sankal-a chain of experimenting farmers, was initiated in mid 1990’s by SRISTI.
•This platform provides scope for lateral learning among those who solve the problem and not only those who merely articulate them.
•Shodh Sankals make use of a solution augmenting approach rather a simple problem solving one.
•Meetings are organised in different talukas where the farmers participate in large numbers.

includes sell of sixty sets to tribal communities through DFO Udaipur and twenty sets through an NGO in Siliguri (WB).
Innovator: Dipakbhai & Vijaybhai, Ahmedabad
The innovators have developed a machine to automate the process of making round cotton wicks. Compared to the manual process where one can make only about 8 - 10 wicks per minute, the machine can produce 20 - 25 good quality wicks per minute. The machine is portable, affordable and easy to use having enormous potential for generating livelihoods.

• M J Joseph had developed a device under the guidance of his father that helps in climbing coconut or areca nut trees. The palm climber consists of two metal loops that are meant for holding the legs.
• There is a film made on his innovation by Discovery Channel and is very popular on outube.com. Recently, both the innovator and his father unfortunately passed away. NIF facilitated sale of his climber to customers in USA, Maldives, Thailand, Australia, Brazil, Mexico etc.
Tree climber
Innovator: Late M J Joseph, Kerala
Tree cum pole climber by Mr. Venkat D.N, TN
The device makes it simple and easy to climb trees. It is
operated by using hand and leg. Upper frame is operating by
hand and lower frame is operating by leg. By up and down
movement of upper and lower frame one by one man can
climb on tree. Due to sitting arrangement after climbing man
can does work at a desired position on tree.
The idea is to have taps fitted on an inclined pipe so that they are at
different heights. This will enable people of different heights to drink water
easily from tap at appropriate height.
Water taps at public places arranged on an incline Chhaya Thakor, class 7 , Gandhinagar, Gujarat
Adjustable walker
Innovator: Miss Shalini Kumari, Patna, Bihar
• Shalini gave an idea to mechanically alter the height of the legs of the walker so that they can be adjusted as per the height of the stairs.
• NIF converted idea to product • Kavirra Solutions, Nagpur commercialized • Signed MoU with Alimco, a Govt of India Enterprise
Innovator: Mr. Mohammad Mehtar Hussainand & Mushtaq Ahmad, Darrang, Assam
• Looking for a low-cost alternative to pump
water in the fields for the winter crops, the
brothers devised the simple windmill made up
of bamboo and tin sheets. NIF facilitated its
testing at IIT Guwahati.
• Looking at its potential in Gujarat, Grassroots
Innovations Augmentation Network- West
(GIAN –W) has installed several units in the
salt farming area of Kutch in Gujarat for
pumping up brine water and also for simple
farm irrigation purposes. The designs have
been considerably improved with the help of
innovators and other experts.
Low cost windmill
Innovations at grassroots
Simplicity of Design; adding value for different application
Low Cost Windmill For Lifting underground Water or Brine
Facts / Crux of matter: • Blending technological innovation with business /services innovations
resulted into economic and social benefits • Inclusive approach adopted by Innovator created business ecosystem of
all stake holders ( farmers & ginners, SHG’s etc ) • End to End Solution ( offering innovations across cotton ginning value
chain along with services ) offered by innovator succeed him in competition and surviving in the industry
Cotton Stripper by Manskhbhai Patel: An electrician turned an innovator and
later turned an Entrepreneur and
also an angel investor
This ground breaking Innovation has not only reduced drudgery of thousands of farmers but also increased their productivity thereby generating huge income and social benefits as spillover effect in cotton farming and ginning industries
Hand operated water lifting device
• Consists of 2 pairs of chain and sprocket (gear
ratio 1:2), impeller pump and pipes.
• Discharge, irrigation capacity and delivery head
of this device are 20-22,000 l/h, 0.03 ha/h and
0.5 m, respectively.
• It can be used for low head (upto 1 m) and
high discharge application
• One person is required at a time.
• The device has high discharge at low-cost
compared to conventional hand pump and
bicycle operated pumps.
• Can be used for transferring water from canal
to field, from one field to other field
• Can also be used for draining out excess water
from field
• By change of impeller can be used for drainage
of wastes

Minds on the margin are not marginal minds
A quote from the report - "In knowledge creation, only
the knowledge created by formal systems has been
considered. This is simply because resource poor
people are considered as sinks and not sources. As
National Innovation Foundation (nif.org.in) has shown,
minds on the margin are not marginal minds. They
create vast amount of knowledge through grassroots
innovation. There must be a way to include this
valuable source of knowledge, as also building a link
between the formal and informal systems, so that the
socio-economic benefits ultimately reach and benefit
the humanity as a whole.
The role of NIF in
knowledge creation
