'Brythonydd', the Rev. David Pryse Williams (1878-1952), was a writer, local historian and Baptistminister. He was born at Penboyr, Carmarthenshire, and brought up in Troed-yr-aur, Cardiganshire.After studying at Dunoon Evangelical College, Argyll, Scotland, 1908-1910, he became pastor of theBaptist churches of Ffynnonhenri, Cynwyl Elfed, Carmarthenshire, 1910-1913, Philadelphia, Swansea,1913-1920, and Libanus, Treherbert, Glamorgan, 1920-1952. He died on 27 October 1952. His personalresearches were concerned, in early life, with the history of the lower Teifi Valley, especially the parishesof Cenarth, Carmarthenshire, and Penbryn, Cardiganshire. During this time he wrote articles and poems,published in periodicals such as Seren Gomer and Archaeologia Cambrensis and local newspapers. In1902 he won the prize at the Newcastle Emlyn eisteddfod for an essay on the history of Cenarth. In lateryears he took an interest in Rhondda antiquities, with particular emphasis on his own church at Libanus.

He was an assiduous collector and was responsible for the preservation of several valuable groups ofmanuscripts such as those of his paternal grandfather Benjamin Williams ('Gwynionydd', 1821-1891) andothers and also original records of several parishes of the lower Teifi Valley.

Nine blank leaves (watermark 1803), added at the beginning of the volume in the presentbinding, and eleven at the end, contain MS additions to the tables, and numerous measurements,estimates and costs of carpenter's and stonemason's work in the Teifiside area, e.g. the dimensions ofthe close stool of Penteinon; the mason's bill at the smith's house at Hirwen Bridge; measurements andcosts of repairs to Dincwd House [St Dogmaels], 1835; the measurements of a pew and balustrade at

A group of six letters, in Welsh, 1891-1892 andundated, from M. Jones, 6 Ivorites Row, Glynneath, to her sister [at Wenallt]. They relate entirely to thewriter's health and her proposal to visit the recipient. The following extract from one of the letters may bequoted: 'os dygwyddaf farw heb eich gweled chwi na un or bechgin peydywch a gwerthy y clock fe fyddewell genif y ty Cwrdd bethel [i.e. Glynneath Baptist Church] ei gael nid oes ei debyg yn gael ei wneydnawr ag yr oedd cymeynt o olwg gyda Mr Roberts [the Baptist minister] arno a wedi taly saith ginyam dano ...'. Agreement, 18 Oct. 1894, between (a) Frederick Lewis Lloyd Philipps of Pentyparc,Pembrokeshire, esq., and Elizabeth Francis Lloyd Philipps, his wife, and (b) Ivor Price Williams ofWenallt, parish of Troedyraur, Cardiganshire, farmer, for the lease of a field called Park penbank fachwith the cottage thereon, being part of the farm and lands called Penbank, parish of Troedyraur. Eleven diaries of Benjamin Williams ('Gwynionydd'), 1878, 1880-1884, 1886-1890. The title-pageof the vol. used for 1878 is wanting; the remaining vols are all 'The churchman's pocket book'. Theentries, which are largely in English, relate to preaching engagements, parochial duties (Tir-yr-abad, Abergwennol, Cwmdwr, Llanofer), the writer's health, the writer's visits to the vale of Teify,to Llanwrin and to Caernarfonshire, the movements of the writer's son Tegid, the writer's health.The vols also generally contain memoranda of cash payments and receipts, e.g. remittances to hismother and his children, payments for the hire of a pony on Sunday, the borrowing and lending ofmoney, the purchase of food, etc. The following selection of entries may be quoted:. 1878, Feb. 4.Visited Merthyr.
