Farewell Year 12

Year 12 2015 is a very diverse group of students, each one with their own individual talents and skills. They have shown how to take the opportunities offered by Lismore High School and individually use them to lay the foundations for their adult lives. Each one has taken something different from their school experience and I personally, am very proud of the manner in which they have engaged with the school and tailored opportunities offered to their own individual goals. Welcome back to Term 4 Our new Deputy Principal Mr Chris Williams has begun the term with us. Mr Williams was formerly Head Teacher TAS at Kadina High Campus and we welcome him here to Lismore. I would like to thank Mr Paul Morris who relieved as Deputy Principal for Term 3 while awaiting the appointment of Mr Williams this term. Mr Morris has been seconded to a project team for the remainder of term 4 this year. He will be working as part of The Rivers Secondary College project team examining alternative learning models for engaging students. Mr Glenn Varcoe will continue as relieving Head Teacher Mathematics/ PDHPE for the remainder of the year. Mrs Anne Price the Head Teacher of the Support unit will be on leave until Week 3 this term. Mr Nathan Chadderton will be relieving Head Teacher until her return. We are targeting student uniform this term with our VIVO rewards program. All students wearing correct uniform will be awarded VIVO points. Only those students not wearing the correct uniform will not be awarded VIVO points. This is to recognise the majority of our students who are wearing the correct uniform to school every day. I was privileged to be involved with the Principals Australia Institute (PAI) National prototype trial for the development of a national certification program for all principals across Australia. I applied for the program earlier in the year and I was one of fifty principals across Australia to be selected for the program. The trial involves government, independent and catholic school principals, and examines the leadership of school principals and collecting evidence of this leadership from a school context. I completed the requirements of the program at the end of Term 3.

Our project-based learning program (PBL) now called Project has been evaluated at the end of Term 3. The findings from our evaluation which involved students, parents and teachers has been very positive. I was involved with many of the interviews and focus groups with parents, students and staff. I was very impressed by the level of detailed feedback from all the stakeholder groups. Major changes for 2015 and 2016 are computer access for every student in Year 7 and Year 8 in Project lessons. Laptop/tablets will be provided for students to use in the library when they have project lessons. The ratio of students to computers will go down from 2.3 students for every computer for each having access to their own computer. We are also changing the way of delivery for 2016 with two smaller teaching teams for Year 7 and Year 8.

We concluded the term with our Year 12 farewell and assembly. The class of 2015 will be the last group of students to go through Lismore High School. As of next year our students will be enrolled as students of The Rivers Secondary College, Lismore High Campus. We were fortunate to have the Deputy Mayor of Lismore, Mr Isaac Smith as our guest speaker. Mr Smith is a former student of Lismore High School and he presented a very engaging speech to our students. I would also like to thank our special guests for the day, Dr Robert Smith, Mr Norm Robinson, Mrs Elkie Robinson and Mrs Kylie Caldwell. Our special guests presented a number of awards to students on the day. The feedback from form parents was very positive about the assembly. Special mention must be made about Mitchell Roberts who scored many academic and citizenship awards on the day. Even though our Year 12 group has been small they are a diverse range of personalities with a range of different aspirations for the future. I was very pleased that more than 60% of our Year 12’s are seeking places in higher education for 2016. Year 12 Students are reminded that they are welcome to come and visit the school to get assistance prior to their HSC examinations. During the first week of the Term four, teachers are not allocated replacement classes. Students

Lismore High Campus Multicultural Day

Thursday 22 October

Lismore High will be celebrating the cultural diversity of our school community on Thursday 22 October. The SRC is

raising money for UNICEF and has asked students to wear costumes from different countries and bring a gold coin

donation. There will also be delicious international gourmet food available for lunch!

After lunch there will be a FREE drumming workshop with Benji from Son of a Drum in Mullumbimby. This workshop

will run from 1:40 to 3:15pm. Permission notes available from the front office. HURRY! Only 30 lucky people will get in!

A competition will be held in Week 2 –students have to identify the flags of 15 different countries on display in the

library and go in a draw to win a fabulous prize!

Any parents wishing to help out on the day or be a part of the celebration are welcome to contact the office. Bianca Urbina

are able to work with their teachers during this time. Following week one, students should book times if they need to meet with their teachers. I would like to also thank all the students, staff and parents who attended the working bee held on Sunday 27 October. We managed to paint the front of the bus bay area poles and it looks fantastic. We will be painting the guttering of the bus bay area at our next working bee. A special thanks to Mr Brad O’Reilly and Mr Thomas Rehbach who organised the paint and brushes. As part of our timetabling of classes for 2016 we will be offering Engineering Studies here at Lismore High Campus. The course is being directly funded through our staffing allocation from The Rivers Secondary College. We are in a great position to offer this course due our strong links with Southern Cross University and to access the Engineering laboratory facilities, which we have already done with the robotics program this year. Other subjects that are directly running due to the college are Agriculture and Aboriginal Studies offered at Richmond River and Kadina High Campuses. Project Based Learning Report: Groovy Greeks Exhibition Day

Wednesday in the last week of term saw the Year 7 Project students powering to the end of their Groovy Greeks project with the display of their Ancient Greek artefacts in their very own museum exhibition. The exhibition was a huge success, well attended by parents, carers, teachers and other students, who visited throughout the day. The students did a great job organising the artefacts and exhibits, preparing the space and refreshments, and guiding the visitors. Others spent the final moments before the exhibition opened, putting the finishing touches on their items, writing up their plaques and adding bibliographies.

Most students enjoyed this project because of the openness of the assessment task, and let their creativity loose; exhibits included models and dioramas, books and letters, vases and urns, costumes, shields and other weaponry. Many put an enormous effort into creating and presenting some fascinating items, and their commitment was evident in the pride they took in their artefacts, and the confidence with which they could discuss aspects of Ancient Greek history with visitors. New Attendance Policies 2015 –

What are my responsibilities as a parent? As a parent with a child of school age, it is important to understand the legal responsibilities and policy guidelines

around ensuring your child’s attendance at school.

A number of updated policies were published at the beginning of 2015. These policies outline the responsibilities of

parents, teachers, the principal and other support agencies, in making sure that all students attend school. Lack of

attendance can have a huge impact on students’ learning.

What are the responsibilities of parents?

* To ensure that if they have a child of compulsory school age, that they are enrolled in a government or

registered non-government school or registered with the Board of Studies Teaching and Educational

Standards (BOSTES) for home schooling.

* To ensure that their children attend every day the school in open for instruction.

* To provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of a

bsence by either telephone, email, a written note or a text message.

* To work in partnership with the school to plan and implement strategies to support their children’s

regular attendance at school. This includes communicating with the school if they are aware of issues

impacting on their child’s attendance or engagement at school.

One area that has changed in the new policy is exemptions, particularly exemptions as they relate to travelling on a

family holiday during school time. Family holidays and travel are no longer considered under the “Exemption from

School – Procedures”. An “Application for Extended Leave-Travel” must be completed by the parent/guardian and

submitted to the Principal who will consider the application if it is in the best interest of the student. If approved a

“Certificate of Extended Leave-Travel” will be issued. Travel documentation should be attached to the application.

Changes to the Attendance Codes have been made, especially in the area of what constitutes a justifiable absence.

The Rivers MADness Event

The Rivers MADness event showcasing the work of Year 12 Visual Arts students at the Bank Café in Molesworth

Street on Tuesday 1st September was a resounding success. Fourteen students and several teachers from the three

Rivers schools worked together over three days to put together an outstanding exhibition that included a diverse and

engaging range of artworks.

The official opening of the exhibition on Tuesday evening by Lismore Mayor, Jenny Dowell was witnessed by a large

group of art enthusiasts, parents, families and friends. Most exhibiting students were present on the night and were

more than willing to discuss their works with members of the crowd.

Lismore High sculpture and photography student, Anna Summers, said the exhibition had been an exciting and satis-

fying experience. She was thrilled to discuss her work with others and pleased that after the many hours of effort she

had put into her Body of Work, that she was able to share it with so many people. She also delighted in speaking

with students and teachers from the other two schools about their works. This initiative will hopefully continue and

expand in the future. Congratulations to Anna Summers and Karaleigh Thorley.

Tapping Their Feet

Lismore High was well represented in the performances at the Star Court Theatre after

the Art Exhibition. Mitch Roberts played Classical Gas like a professional and to

tumultuous applause, while Seth Carroll presented Can’t Stop with the able help of Sara

Downs-Andrews on vocals, Carlo Fisher on drums, Logan Eckersley on guitar and Kyal

Hall on lead guitar. This band had everyone dancing and tapping their feet. Kyal Hall

gave a superb performance of Perfect Waves, showing with practice and rehearsal just

how talented he is. He was assisted by Seth, Mitch and Carlo and all performed to high

acclaim.

A special vote of thanks goes to Mr Wordsworth of Richmond

River High, who was the producer of the Star Court event

and ably assisted by Miss Johnstone of Kadina and our very

own Mr Brady. All of the music acts from our sister schools of

the Rivers College performed with distinction in what turned

out to be a quality event for our community to enjoy.

Music Notes Music students had a very busy term and in particular in the last few weeks. Our students have been involved in community performances at every level and the HSC performance exams are now complete. Sarah Lane, one of our resident singers and Year 10 elective music student, has recently performed at the Lismore Performing Arts Festival to great acclaim. This gathering of young talent from the local P-12 Rivers Schools hosts performances from all the local Primary Schools and each year Lismore High contributes a performance; this year it was Sarah singing and accompanying herself on the guitar. As usual our contribution to LPAF was high quality and greatly appreciated in the wider community. Our Year 12 class excelled themselves in the ‘Rivers MADness concert’ as a run up to their recently completed HSC Performance exams on September 9. We have made sure the community is aware of the large talent pool available at Lismore High and continues a long tradition of high standards of music in our school. With the Performances now complete our graduating class performed in the Quad in Week 10 with the students who have been practicing all year at lunch times. This was an excellent concert and with Years 12 and 10 combining with our fantastically talented Year 8s to show off all their hard work to the whole school. Congratulations to our graduating class and all the students who are contributing to the musical life at Lismore High. All the best to our HSC candidates for the rest of their exams The addition of Singstar to our Music Program is still unearthing many talented vocalists and the future looks good for the reconstitution of the school choir next term. Practice days will move to Wednesdays and all are welcome to come and enjoy singing each week at lunchtime. The Music tuition program is still open and we continue to seek expressions of interest to have tutors available at our school. The Conservatorium will be delivering a demonstration at the first assembly we have in Term 4. Future Leaders Camp

Several of our students attended the three day Future

Leaders Camp at Lake Ainsworth Aug 10th to 12

th. The

focus of the camp was on leadership, team building,

functioning as a team and working through a plan to

improve an aspect of the school. There was a mix of

theoretical and physical challenges and all had a focus of

the role of the team in leadership. The idea was that a

good leader will make other leaders.

Chris Hickey the previous Australian Wallabies Coach, gave a brilliant introduction speech on leadership qualities

and the importance of the team. His two most important points were firstly to be yourself and have your own style.

Secondly the team is more important than you and you have to put your own ego behind the needs and focus of the

group.

The students who went on the camp worked on two plans to make improvements to the school. One was to improve

the information about resources to help students who are struggling at school and don’t know where to seek help,

advice and counselling. The students are aiming to talk on assembly and have brochures that outline what options

are available. The second plan was to have a secure place where students can lock up their bags when they do PE

and school sport.

The students who attended found it full-on, really fun, that they learnt heaps, enjoyed hanging out with students from

other schools and great that they could come up with a plan that would make a difference in students’ lives.

2015 Northern Rivers Zone U16s Boys & Girls Futsal

On Thursday 3rd September, 11 students from Lismore High

Campus attended the 2015 Northern Rivers Zone U16s Boys

& Girls Futsal Competition at Goonellabah Sports & Aquatic

Centre.

The girls’ team played first against Alstonville, while they came

out strong looking very competitive and remained ahead in the

first half, they unfortunately went down in the second half.

Next up were the boys who also played Alstonville. The

Lismore boys looked strong and put up a good fight but it was

no match for the Alstonville side who went on to win the

competition.

I would like to congratulate the students who attended on the

day for their behaviour, they were good sports and they

represented the school well. It was a pleasure to see them

encouraging each other and having a positive attitude all day

despite some tough competition.

Year 7 Food Technology Year 7HE3 Food Technology class participated in their ‘individually designed breakfast’ practical. Each and every one of them productively and efficiently created their breakfast designs. They were expected to include the five food groups and an egg to reinforce their understanding of the importance of breakfast. The students’ creations were wonderfully creative and well presented. Happy faces and full bellies concluded the lesson.

Four of our Aboriginal students, Liam King, Mark King,

Martin King and Shane McKay, flew down to Sydney on

Thursday 20th until Sunday the 23

rd of August. They were

invited by Macquarie University to participate in the

National Indigenous Science Experience Program

(NISEP). On Friday and Saturday the students

demonstrated many different forms of Science to the

Schools and community in Redfern. Three other schools

from Casino, Maclean and Wagga Wagga, were also

invited to present as part of the team.

There were many different and interesting activities occurring in and outside of the Redfern Community Centre on

Thursday and Friday, some of which were based on traditional Aboriginal science, and also other science and

technological demonstrations. There were hands on demonstrations of weaving, making knives, hammers, body

paint and bush tucker sampling. Other displays included Aboriginal Astronomy, light, native birds, dry ice, invisible

ink, elephant toothpaste, robotics, leaf insects, smell tests and many more.

All the students were fantastic presenters and ambassadors for their schools and it was not long

before everyone bonded and had a great time together. Everyone from the four schools, as well

as the Elders, stayed at the Glebe YHA. We also squeezed in time to go to the football, shopping

and even a walk along the Harbour Bridge. The staff from Macquarie University were fantastic

and very supportive of the students. Martin King got to talk to two of their Astronomers about his

future career path and his love of Astronomy. He was invited to an evening of lectures on the

topic of Aboriginal Astronomy which we went to and it was fascinating.

Liam and Shane got to show the Governor of NSW, David Hurley

how to make traditional hunting knives. There were many important

guests and visitors over the two days. It was so wonderful to see a

group of young Aboriginal students so professional and enthusiastic

in their role as demonstrators. They were all fantastic!

I learnt so much on this trip about Aboriginal culture, knowledge and

got to feel the sense of family and community when everyone comes

together. It was awesome!

The stall was well received and many students took advantage of the great gifts on offer. Approximately $100 was raised after expenses were covered and the excitement from the students was well worth the investment.

A thousand thanks to the wonderful parents and staff who spared some of their holiday time painting the façade and walkway at the school on Sunday September 27. Thank you to Tom and Brad for preparing the framework and for everything they do. Thank you to those who so willingly helped create the indigenous garden at the rear of the school with Kellie’s team.

Lismore High Primary Science Program

Term 3 has been full of adventure for our Primary science program with an in-depth study on the living world.

Wyrallah Road Public School was treated to an adventure with Barbara Jensen from Rous Water and Miss Hall to the Southern Cross University pond where they completed a physical survey of the water quality health and biological survey of the fauna inhabiting the pond. Students were loaded with nets, water testing kits, aquatic macro-invertebrate ID cards and big smiles. Both studies showed a positive result for the health of our local water way but more importantly an incredibly diverse range of creepy crawlies and plenty of fish!

Earlier in the term Lismore Public School’s Year 4, 5 and 6 classes set out on an exploration of the intricate habitats within their own school, students were surprised to see just how many different environments existed within the gates! To end the term Lismore Public’s classes will be making their very own ‘ecosystem in a jar’.

As always it has been a pleasure sharing our high school science program with our local primary students and I look forward to welcoming many of the students to our school next year.
