As the sun sets on my Commodoreship….

OK, just being goofy. Seriously though, I want to give a big vote of thanks to the Board, to this team of officers, and to all of our committee chairs and members who have worked so hard to keep the club going this year. It goes without saying that this club would not survive without these folks to do the sometimes tedious work that has to be done for our members. Please join me in thanking them for their service.

It’s been an interesting year, with a lot more interesting stuff to come under the new team of officers and Board members. I really am pleased to welcome our officers- and Board-elect to what I know will be an exciting year around here. Thanks again to Shep and the nominating committee for getting these folks to say “yes.” We’ve already started working on the transition, and I’m afraid they’re starting to realize what they’ve gotten themselves in to. Oh well, not my problem any longer!

Honestly, thanks to you all for your support this year. Please give your new officers and Board the same support and understand-ing that you gave me this year. If so, we’ll continue to be a great BCYC family.

Signing off for the last time. I’ll see you around the club.

10th Annual Cat's Point RegattaSubmitted by Ruth Peterson

Both BCYC and Tony Angel were presented with a tro-phy of appreciation for ten years of continued support of the Sea Scouts’ Annual Cats Point Regatta! Check out the Eagle with a flag in the trophy case!

Our scouts performed well during this year’s regatta, taking first place on the bay during the sailing events and second place overall! The three days of events are hosted jointly at BCYC by SS Ship 915 & Eckerd College’s SS Ship 912. As a nationally sanctioned event, it is the biggest and most complete regatta in the southern region of BSA.

Sixteen Sea Scout ships and or Venturing troops from across Florida competed in activities and events that are carefully designed to be fun, and to provide reward-ing opportunities to build a competitive “Watch” Crew spirit. Half of the final score for the weekend was taken from the results of racing Sunfish and Catalina 16’s. The other half of their score is compiled from action-based land events such as Power Aid, Flotsam and Jetsam, Deadpan’s Lift, Stand on Relativity, What Kind of a Boat? Yawl! Ketch! This!, Knots Beyond, You Can’t Get There from Here, Head in the Clouds, and Ground Tackle.

Can you translate these titles into layman terms? Hint: You Can’t Get There from Here is all about navigation!

Gulfport’s Fire Department sent three of their finest to demonstrate how to put out a fire using a fire extin-guisher. It’s not as easy as it looks.

Thanks go to ABCO Fire and Safety for providing enough fire extinguishers for everyone who wanted to take a shot at putting out a controlled fire in the park-ing lot.

A fan favorite was shooting off the old flares that you, the members of BCYC, donated so that these young leaders can learn firsthand how to safely handle them. We even made sure to notify the proper channels of our exercise. The local fire departments and the Coast Guard were officially sent several messages beforehand.

SO imagine our surprise when we see the flashing blue lights on a Coast Guard vessel that is steaming down the channel. We did what all good scout leaders would do… we pushed Joel to the front of the crowd to handle the situation and stepped back… way back!!

12

Thanks, Joel for taking the HEAT ! Some-one didn’t pass on the message! But all turned out well and we didn’t have to bail Joel out!

Sunday morning, fol-lowing a non-denom-inational devotional, the crews headed to the beach where teams showed their brawn with a fierce round of Canoe Tug-of War. The regatta was culminated with the Presentation of Awards.

An event of this size and scope can only happen be-cause of the behind-the-scenes planning and help pro-vided by dozens of people willing to invest in our youth.

Thank you:

To BCYC members and advisors, for serving in multiple capacities before, during and following the regatta.

Also to members who provided berthing for many of the crew and advisors. Your generosity and trust made the weekend more affordable. These boats partici-

On the water, Joel Heyne, Mark Requa, Bill Morse and Marty Southard served as safety boats and referees!

To crewmembers Tony Angel, Gerri Angel, Larry Dodson, Paul Pittman, Cathy Talisman, Jesse Milton, Sheri Og-orek, Margaret and Bart Weiss who spent hours prepar-ing meals that were a culinary delight.

To Greater Tampa Bay Area Council staff.

And a special “Thank You!” to Tony Angel and Joel Heyne, Skippers of Ship 915, for their vision, passion, time, energy, and continued dedication to the mission of Sea Scouts and the future of our youth!

Bye Bye Scallywags and Hello Hootenanny 2018Submitted by Steve Honour

Sad news. The rumors are true. The Scallywags of BCYC have already played their final show.

Three years ago, a band was born. Some people were just having fun playing songs together. They were asked if they might play at a very special birthday party. Guy O’Connor, Steve Honour, John McLeod, Frank Downward, Mike Livers, and John Alonso played for Pim Miranda’s birthday. It was a lot of work, but the pay-off was how much fun playing for the crowd was. We were hooked. We didn’t want it to end there, so we worked harder, and learned more songs, and played for the club on New Years Eve. And we kept going, party after party, week after week of rehearsals. Some-times we had 6 months between shows, other times it was just weeks. There were three different drummers over the years. And way too late, we picked up a good sound man in Rand Valentin.

The final show was at the TSS Rumgatta in October. We didn’t know it at the time. We just did what we rehearsed, and cranked out: the best show we ever played! Our final show was our finest. Felt really good. I’ll miss that, but I won’t miss spending all the time it took to make that happen. The thing is, we never planned for the band to ever go on that long… We just got together to play a party! And then another, and another, and so on, and by and by, we had been a band for a long time.

Along the way, our spouses gave up being with us at parties. We were always far too busy for much social-ization. And we all generally gave up an evening a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. Eventually the novelty of it wore off, as the unspoken commitment grew heavy. It was time to move on. Hurricane Irma did place us in a time crunch to prepare for the Rumgatta, so blame it on that. Overall, it was fun. A lot of work, but fun. So much work! For now, there is no current plan to form another band. Although I’m sure it will happen again sooner or later. Probably in a different form, with a different combination of people. There’s a lot of latent talent at BCYC.

During three magical years, the Scallywags played 16 shows at four different venues, including two other Yacht Clubs, with 14 band members at various times, learned nearly 100 songs, and entertained at least 1200 party-goers. We also raised money for Meals on Wheels. For our final show we had a logo that said:

“Scallywags of BCYC” printed as a sponsor on the TSS Rumgatta shirts. It was fun to represent BCYC to our sis-ter club. We also forwarded club relations and provided valuable PR for BCYC.

Fortunately, BCYC has more connections to great music. Ricci’s son Noah Broe, and his beautiful wife Heather Broe, The Broe Duo, will perform at the New Years Eve Hootenanny. There is no fee for you to enjoy this profes-sional show. Just come settle in out back, maybe poke the fire. Do bring firewood if needed. The evening be-gins at 9PM, with an hour of open mic. Come and share your musical talent with us. Call me at 727-743-3000 and I will sign you up for the open mic session. Already in the line up, we have John McLeod, Rick Martin and myself and Ricci. At 10 PM, the main show begins, and plays until midnight when we break for … The Cooler Drop! Toast in the New Year in with all your best friends at BCYC with this uniquely BCYC tradition. Champagne provided.

BYO food and beverages, and firewood. DIY pot luck, if you like. One usually springs up. Take charge of that if you wish. Please be kind to the club and our unique tribe. Make your own food and drink provisions, and clean up after yourself. If you see some messy clutter or litter, or you have a moment of content-ment and benevolence, clean up, pick up trash, take out a full can. The club thanks you, and you will feel good for doing a good thing. The spirit of BCYC soars on New Years Eve at this mostly DIY party.

Don’t run off right away. After midnight we have an-other hour of music with a group jam. Bring midnight munchies, hang around, and let’s party with the spirit of the moment, wherever the music takes us. The best way to enjoy the full Hootenanny experience is to plan to stay aboard your boat. If not, make sure you have a good plan to get home safely. Remember to bring breakfast fixins for New Year’s Day if you stay. That’s usually a wonderful and special gathering the morning after.

Share a special New Years Eve – at BCYC! Remember – going to this one momentous party makes you part of the BCYC tribe for an entire year, even if it’s the only event you can make. Don’t let it pass without you.

Fleet Captain ReportSubmitted by James Masson, 2018 Fleet Captain

Hello All, I am excited, honored, and little apprehensive about becoming your new fleet captain. I am excited to get more involved in promoting and enabling sailing with you all here at BCYC. I am honored that you all think I can do this job. I am apprehensive about some of my duties.

One of those duties that I’m not too worried about is keeping track of who’s where regarding wet, dry, and dinghy assignments. With your help this shouldn’t be difficult at all; please check your profile in Wild Apricot our data management system. If you are in a dry slip, wet slip or a dinghy rack please make sure the correct space is listed under your profile. If there is an error let me know at [email protected] and I will change it. If you have an old beat up dinghy that you need to get rid of let me know and I will take care of it.

A duty that I’m a little apprehensive about is seeing to the following of some of our standards and poli-cies. Please police yourselves, look around your space and keep it picked up as if you are expecting Sunday Company. Our lease negotiations are coming up and we want to look our best for the city and, more impor-tantly, our fellow club members. If you need any help please contact me at [email protected].

The one duty that I am most excited about is promoting and somewhat coordinating all the boating and sail-ing opportunities at the club and in the area. Exciting things are happening out at the beach: Rhumb Runners are building sunfish racks, the club has bought six 420 club dinghies for both the membership and Sea Scouts, and plans are being made to grow our kayak and SUP presence. If you have any input and/or would like to get involved please contact me at [email protected] or, Oh hell, here’s my phone number 727 343 2212.

Mack N’ Gnaw Race ReportSubmitted by James Masson

Saturday, October 28 saw 9 boats attempt to catch din-ner in the Gulf of Mexico: what actually happened was we all had a great time. In fact, all but one boat caught fish.

15 fat juicy Spanish Mackerel were brought back to the dock by our fishing fleet. These were then expertly prepared by Samantha Ring and new member Rey Lastra and then devoured by the returning crews along with broccoli slaw, steamed potatoes and mushrooms. Nothing like fresh, swimming that day fish and a good side of slaw!

Ralph Schuler and the crew of Rum-A-Round took 1st place and a bottle of Mount Gay home to a Halloween party before he could even share it. Reigning Commo-dore Lee Nell and the crew of MeeShee took a second place and a silver spoon home. Garth Reynolds and the crew of “who can pronounce that” Koinonia took third place and a rubber ducky with racing flames home. The only boat not to catch fish was Richard Walter’s Sea Hawk, time for a new name Richard.

Looking forward to next year.

T’was The Night Before (a Sailor’s) Christmasby Gerald EwingDecember 1999

T’was the night before Christmas, I swung on the hook

With snowflakes a’landing, asleep with my book

When up on the deck I heard footsteps and stuff

“I’ve been boarded!” I thought, and I tried to be tough

Then down the companionway hatch came a dude

He was dressed like a nut and I thought, “I’m so screwed”

But he laughed and he hummed as he surveyed my junk

So I figured he must be the resident drunk

His eyes were lit up like a junkie on speed

But he gave me a whole bunch of stuff that I need

Like rum and cigars and new charts and a dinghy

And some kind of fancy electrical thingy

I knew it was stolen but I wasn’t telling

I just hoped he was giving and wasn’t just selling

And I poured him a grog which he downed with a wink

Then I poured one for me (Lord I needed a drink!)

Then he staggered above to the dark snowy night

As I peeked I beheld an incredible sight

Eight tiny dolphins and a beautiful sleigh

And the dude hopped aboard and prepared to make way

The dolphins were ready to power the sled

But the guy raised a genny and mains’l instead

With a burp and a chuckle he gathered the breeze

And called to the dolphins, now swimming with ease

“Hey Stalker and FEMA and Cancer and Nixon!

Or Stinky and Pepper Spray, Mason, and Dixon!

Or whatever your names are, you cute little fishes,

Here’s to every last sailor, my best Christmas wishes!”

As he sailed away leaving a wobbly wake

I hoped he had not many stops left to make

He got close to shore and he soon was aground

But the dolphins proceeded to pull him around

And I heard him exclaim as he sailed out of sight

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!”

November Covered Dish DinnerHosted by John and Katie Meyer and Joye and David Swisher; photos courtesy of Joye

Earlier in the year, Katie Meyer & I were talking. She & John had gone to a magic show that they truly enjoyed. She mentioned that they thought it would be a good idea for a theme for a BCYC covered dish dinner. How-ever as they had not hosted a dinner before, they were hesitant. I explained that David & I have hosted the November dinner for several years. So we invited Katie & John Meyer to do it with us. It can be overwhelming to host one for the first time. Thus the idea of a magical dinner came to be. We talked about 3 of us having No-vember birthdays; what a wonderful way to celebrate together.

I met Hugh Turley, magician, at an event where I was involved in October. I saw his magic show years ago and lost track of him. I asked if he would be willing do a show for BCYC in November. He lives in Holiday and I wasn’t sure he’d be willing to drive down that far to do a show. With Katie’s approval, we booked him.

Katie & John can up with the idea of the decorations, John created the flyer and we all decorated. We had decided on a chili cook off to offset the $ of hiring a magician.

A magical evening, indeed! Hugh warmed up to our crowd easily (as he was expecting to perform for Com-edy Connection Caring Clowns). We both got a laugh out of that when I explained the guests were indeed a bunch of clowns, they just didn’t wear red noses and spent as much time as possible boating on the water.

With the assistance of Dan and then Guy, Hugh dazzled us with his magic. Looking out into the audience, I knew everybody enjoyed the show as much as we did. Thanks to those who brought chili for the cook off, as along with the big pots Katie, John & I made, we fed the crowd with no left overs.

It’s so much fun to host a dinner with another couple of friends. Clean up was also a breeze with a little help from our friends.

With gratitude,Joye Swisher

Rhumb Runner ReportSubmitted by Barb Meyer, RR Captain

The Winter/Spring Series for Sunfish, Prams and Capris begins January 14th and will run the second and fourth Sundays through March. By adding Capris to the series we hope it will entice more women to join us. Paula Shur has agreed to be the Sailing/Race Chair for the remainder of the season, and Lisa Glaser will serve as Vice Captain. Paula has already made improvements that will make our race days run smoother. Winners of the fall series Sunfish: Paula Shur-first, Lisa Glaser-second, Barb Meyer-third , and Pat Nolan-fourth.

Publicizing of the Women's Challenge Regatta will begin in January. It was requested that the Rhumb Runners continue to sponsor this race. Women of the club - start putting crews together and get practicing; it's never too early! Cathy Talisman is taking charge of dinner plans. Mark Rother will head up the on-the-wa-ter race committee. I still need someone to take over for me on race day. Everything will be set in place; a volunteer would just have to see that all runs smoothly. Please contact me if you might be interested.

Thanks to all who supported the Rhumb Runner Silent auction during the November covered dish. The mon-ey collected, along with some generous donations, will enable us to purchase two spinnaker sails. Once we have a group racing the Capris, we'll plan a class on how to fly chutes.

There was the special touch of the RR's dusted about the One Design Regatta on November 11th and 12th

Congratulations to Marge Lofts and Pat Nolan for participating. They both sailed Capris and placed in their fleet. Joye and David Swisher on Redemption Song headed up the Race Committee. Cathy Talisman planned and served the meals for the racers. Patty Tishuk sold T-shirts for Mark and made Daiquiris on Sunday. I found the guest racers to be very apprecia-tive and polite. I would love to see more of us out there racing next year.

The RR holiday party is planned for Thursday Decem-ber 14th at 6PM. We'll meet at my home: 106 - 23d Ave SE for a seasonal drink concocted by Lisa.

Then we'll walk to the Chattaway (2 blocks) for some of the best burgers in town or dish of your choice. After-ward we'll head to the neighborhood holiday house. Jimmy has agreed to haul us back and forth in the back

of the truck. He's willing to make as many trips a neces-sary. We can pretend it's a hay ride and I'll bring steps for you shorties.

This invite goes out to all club women. Plus, if there are any guys that are willing to put up with us, you are welcome to join in the fun. Our honorary RR Steve Conn plans on having a burger. Please RSVP by December 7th so reservations can be made.

This year the RR's are donating to "Be a Santa to a Senior." With guidance from Joye Swisher the RR's will fill the "stockings" of four Gulfport community seniors. It is our hope to make the holidays a little brighter for those without family close by.

The RR Advisory Board is looking for new fundraising ideas and group activities in 2018. Any and all sugges-tions are welcome.

The next FWSA meeting is Wednesday January 17th hosted by the Broad Reachers at Pass-A-Grille SPYC. I hope more of the RR can attend. It is a wonderful way to see how other women sailing groups function.

Finally, please take time to check out the new Sunfish racks. As of this writing there are two units up and one more to go! Ken Shur builds the units in his garage, Jim picks them up in the truck, and the rest is just plain magic.

I look forward to being part of the committee that works on future plans for the beach. It could truly be a wonderful place to spend time at and do a little sailing too.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all!
