What would Sir WilliamHillary have thoughtabout the day when RyeHarbour lifeboat rescued29 children and adultsfrom inflatable toys on ahot summer's day ear-lier this year (see Life-boat Services)?

When he founded theRNLI in 1824 his chiefconcern was the fate ofweather-worn sailors inwinter gales, not that ofmuddle-headed, lobster-pink holidaymakers offsouth coast beaches.Global warming was notthe burning issue of hisday and it might wellhave astonished the oldcampaigner that the dri-est, calmest summer onrecord also produced thetwo busiest months onrecord for lifeboat crews.

Having overcome theculture shock, let ushope, though, that hewould be proud of theseachievements. The life-boat service of 1995 hasan enormous range ofpotential risks to cover.It is remarkable that wehave the equipment andthe volunteers ready tocope in winter gales andin summer heat. True,there are times, espe-cially in the holiday sea-son, when forethoughtand prudence would pre-vent the need for a life-boat. We are doing allwe can now to encour-age sale practice by thesea-going public.

But the RNLI is morea people's service todaythan at any time in itshistory. If the pursuits ofthe people it saves ap-pear sometimes trivial,the death of a child at theseaside leaves at leastas great a scar on a life-boat crew as the loss ofany other life.

Special resources for youngThe RNLI is involved in a concerted effort to make youngpeople more aware of its work and has introduced two specialpacks aimed at teachers. The first pack, called 'Launch!' andaimed at 7 to 11 year-olds, was introduced last year. Designedto fit and complement the school curriculum it has been highlysuccessful, even receiving praise from the Schools Curriculumand Assessment Authority, the body which actually sets thecurriculum and which now intends to use parts of it in its ownliterature!

To extend the age range a new pack has just been released,this time aimed at the 5 to 7 year-old age group. Called 'Life-

boat!' it has been specially de-signed and developed to pro-vide information and re-sources closely allied to thecurriculum, using all new ma-terial. Although aimed prima-rily at teachers the pack willalso be useful to leaders of anyother groups in the age range.

The pack consists of a newAl format colour poster, aneight-panel A4 colour frieze(depicting a rescue right fromthe beginning of the incidentto taking the survivors back toshore), with associated activi-ties and storyline, six A4photocards in full colour withaccompanying worksheetsand a comprehensive teach-ers' book with explanations,ideas and extension activities.

Projects are diverse, rang-ing from safety at sea, team-work, through to historical in-vestigation, drama and design.Together the items address thebroad spectrum of the curricu-lar areas in the United King-dom and the Republic of Ire-land while also providing ex-periences for discrete subjectareas.

ChildrenalwayswelcomeYoung people are becomingincreasingly involved in theRNLI; as the naming cer-emony reports relate, the fund-ing of the Fishguard Trent classwas entirely in their hands,through the good offices ofthe 'Blue Peter' appeal.

Meanwhile, the name ofGreat Yarmouth andGorleston's new Trent waschosen by 13-year-oldJonathan Griffiths in a compe-tition run for children by theRNLI and Volvo Car UK. Thelifeboat, funded from the pro-ceeds of draws for Volvo cars,is to be named Samarbeta whichmeans 'Working Together' inSwedish. The winning namewhich reflects the theme usedby Volvo and the RNLI overan eight-year partnership, wasselected out of 2,000 entries bythe Great Yarmouth andGorleston lifeboat crew.Jonathan will be guest of hon-our at the naming ceremony,receive a year's free StormForce membership and a £100WH Smith voucher.

Elsewhere it has been theseason for Storm Force rallieswhere junior members of theRNLI have the opportunity toencounter the lifeboat serviceat first hand with games, dem-onstrations and instruction.Venues this year have beenSouth Shields, Milton Keynes,Selsey, Fleetwood, CarsingtonWater in Derbyshire and Ban-gor in Northern Ireland.

The hiddenlifeboatsThe National Maritime Mu-seum in London has organ-ised a 'Hidden Collection'seminar on lifeboats and light-houses for 7 March 1996. The'Hidden Collections' are theparts of the museum's collec-tion that are normally hiddenaway in stores, vaults or ar-chives due to lack of space.

The seminar runs from10am to 4.30pm and looks atthe RNLI and at the develop-ment of the lifeboat and of thelighthouse. Discussion willtrace the history of these aidsto life and survival at sea andinclude use of the plans, pho-tographs and models housedin the museum.

The seminar costs £27 in-cluding refreshments and freeentry for the National Mari-time Museum, The Queen'sHouse and the Old Royal Ob-servatory.

Carl GilesWith great regret we announcethe death of cartoonist CarlGiles on 27 August 1995.

Carl Giles was appointed aLife Governor of the RNLI in1984 in recognition of his sup-port over many years - he hadsupplied a cartoon speciallyfor the Institution's greetingcard each Christmas for manyyears and had been awarded aPublic Relations Award for hiswork as far back as 1973.

NEWS NEWSThanks a MillionOne of the most famous cruis-ing yachtswomen, SusanHiscock MBE, has left an esti-mated Elm in her will to pro-vide the RNLI with a Severnor Trent class lifeboat to benamed Wanderer, the namecarried by all of the yachts inwhich she and her husbandhad cruised extensively. SusanHiscock and husband Ericsailed round the world threetimes and wrote a number ofbooks drawn from their expe-riences.

Fittingly the first of theyachts built specifically for thecouple, Wanderer II was con-structed in Poole, very close towhere the RNLI's headquar-ters now stands. However itwas in Wanderer III in whichthey made their first circum-navigation, returning to theUK in 1955, at which time shewas only the fourth Britishyacht to complete the trip.

Another famous namefrom a very different arenawho showed in his will that hehad never forgotten the life-boat service was LarryGrayson. His recent deathbrought to light the fondmemories which he held forRedcar lifeboat, and it wasannounced that he had left£10,000 to the station.

He began his career atRedcar, playing many sum-mer seasons at the New Pavil-ion, and had always kept intouch with Joyce Dowding, akeen fundraiser for the RNLI,and the bequest was made inrecognition of their friendship.

It is a possibility that someof Larry's money will be usedto fund new doors at the boat-house. In the words of Red car'shonorary secretary, IanReadman, 'we really will beable to 'shut that door' on thecareer and life of a great enter-tainer'.

RecordSummerAugust 1995 was the busiestmonth ever for the lifeboatservice, first indications beingthat there were 1,557 launches,an average of 50 a day, almostthree times the general aver-age of 17 a day.

August Bank Holiday sawno fewer than 303 launchesfrom Friday to Monday, with111 on Sunday. Full figureswill not be available until Serv-ice Reports are received fromthe lifeboat stations.

Michael Vlasto, the RNLI'ssea safety liaison officer, com-mented: 'Hot summers alwaysseem to mean more work forthe lifeboat crews. When theweather is fine for so long,people take to the water whowouldn't have normally doneso. It is these people, particu-larly that we need to reachwith messages about how totake care of themselves.'

Presidential visit

HRH The Duke of Kent, President of the RNLI, is pictured talking to (fromleft to right) crew member John Gorman, and Helmsmen Geraint Wheeler,Tom Ridgway, Sandro James and Cliff Bates all of Aberystwyth during atwo day tour of Cardigan Bay lifeboat stations in July. His other ports of callwere Barmouth, Aberdovey, Borth, New Quay and Cardigan.

On the CardsThe RNLI's mail order catalogue, 'Watermark', was enclosedwith the Summer issue of The Lifeboat, with the usual excellentresponse. However, although many people like to plan theirChristmas purchases early it seems that an equal number ofpeople feel that summer is far too early to even think aboutChristmas shopping and keep their copy for use later!

The 'Watermark' catalogue contains a wide range of Christ-mas cards and gifts - all of which raise money for the Institution- and anyone who has mislaid their catalogue, or who wouldlike to obtain one for a friend, should contact Customer Serviceson (01202) 677766 so that another copy can be despatched.

Sea Safety ProgressThe Sea Safety Initiative, inwhich the RNLI is workingwith other sea-safety organi-sations, took several steps for-ward during 1995.

The first booklet, 'SafetyGuidelines for RecreationalBoat Users', was launched atthe London Boat Show in Janu-ary, and three further book-lets providing 'Guidelines toReduce Machinery Failure'were introduced in March.These were aimed at pleasurecraft, diving support craft andfishing vessels and were inresponse to statistics showingthat machinery failure is oneof the main causes of call-outs.

The 'Diving Support Craft'booklet was launched at theDive 95 exhibition at Olym-pia, and 53,000 copies werealso distributed with the Juneissue of 'Diver' magazine. The'Fishing Vessel' booklet was

launched at Fishing 95 exhibi-tion and also distributed with'Fishing News' and 'ScottishFishing Monthly'. 170,000 cop-ies of the'Pleasure Craft' book-let were distributed in the Mayissue of four of the main yacht-ing magazines which werepublished in time for Easter,when most recreational sail-ors were preparing their boatsfor the season.

Videos covering othersafety related subjects are be-ing produced and the first,'First Aid Afloat' made in con-junction with the RYA, waslaunched at the SouthamptonInternational Boat Show inSeptember. The next videocovering 'The use of EPIRBs/SARTs in the GMDSS' (all ofwhich are modern electronicdistress and position indicat-ing systems) was due to fol-low soon after.

JINFLATABLE STEPS IN TO TAKE OVER TOW

Heavy seas and poorconditions as D classsaves threeA service by Port Talbot's D class inshore lifeboat in difficult condi-tions has led to the award of the Thanks of the Institution Inscribed onVellum to crew member Robert Harris. The other crew membersduring the service, Lee Worth and Stanley May, have received aframed letter of thanks from the Chairman of the RNLI.

It was at 1520 on 4 March 1995 that thestation heard from Swansea Coastguardthat a vessel was in distress, firing redflares, half a mile west of Port Talbotharbour. Sixteen minutes later the sta-tion's D class lifeboat launched in a SSWForce 6 to 7 wind and a 10-15ft swelltopped by breaking waves. Although thesky was overcast visibility was good.

The casualty was a 24ft convertedship's lifeboat named Panama, which hadsuffered engine failure earlier in the dayand been towed into Port Talbot harbourby the lifeboat. She had not been allowedto remain in the harbour and, with thewind only Force 2 and the sea calm, thelifeboat had towed her back out to sea,where she had anchored. A motor fishingvessel called Moyana had agreed to towPanama back to her moorings later but,with the sudden change of weather, thesituation had changed dramatically andPanama was now in difficulty.

ConcernedRobert Harris took the helm of the

lifeboat and headed straight for Panama,coming alongside her starboard side asshe lay head to the weather. The threepeople on the casualty were becomingmore and more concerned about theirsituation and one even wanted to try toswim ashore. Robert Harris boarded thecasualty to calm them down, handing thehelm over to Lee Worth.

The lifeboat then returned to the shore,entering the Afan river over a bar onwhich there 4 to 5ft waves on top of a 10ft swell, to collect a hand-held VHP radiofrom the station and also to find out at

when there would be enough water toallow Moyana to get out of the river.Moyana''s crew said they would be able toclear the river at 1630, so the lifeboat wentback out over the bar to pass the radio tocrew member Harris and stand by Panama.

Moyana (a 36ft crabber with two crew)arrived on the scene at 1645, and twoattempts were needed to pass a tow.Robert Harris secured the line andweighed anchor as Moyana took up thetow .

Afan. After about ten minutes a biggerthan average wave hit both boats, oneafter the other, and the tow parted. Thethree men on the casualty became ex-tremely agitated and wanted to be takenoff, but Harris told them that they weresafer on board.

Made fastThe lifeboat, with Lee Worth at the

helm, moved in and was able to pick upthe parted tow line and keep Panamahead to sea. Moyana then made anotherapproach to the bow of Panama and passedher part of the broken tow line to'thelifeboat, where Stanley May made thetwo pieces fast to each other. The towwas then taken up again and Moyanaspeeded up to bring the tow safely overthe bar and into the river.

Once inside the river the lifeboat tookover the tow, secured Panama to a moor-ing and took her crew ashore. The life-boat then went back out over the bar oncemore and returned to station at 1721.

The Chief of Operations has sent aletter of appreciation to the skipper ofMoyana for his help in the service.

Dogged determinationNorth Berwick's D class inflatable wascalled out during July this year after aGolden Retriever decided to show offthe breed's prowess in the water.

Six year old Homer decided to takea dip during his daily 'walkies', andthen just kept on going - half a mileout to sea to Fidra Island!

He could be seen through binocu-lars chasing around the island andthere were fears he might be sweptaway.

His worried owner, Hilary Reid,

went to North Berwick Harbour to gethelp, but it was low water and all of thefishing boats were aground.

So, North Berwick's lifeboatmencame to the rescue, launched the Dclass and shot out to the island. Mean-while worried owner Hilary droveback... only to find an impatient Homerwaiting for her in the car park after hishalf-mile swim back to shore!

'I'm very grateful to the lifeboatmen/she said, 'but I'm a bit embarrassed atthe trouble they went to'.

CONDITIONS OUTSIDE LIMITS FOR D CLASS

Atlantic clear of the watertwice in race to manin waterA service by New Brighton's Atlantic 21 on 5 March 1995 to a man inthe water has led to the a ward of the Thanks of the Institution Inscribedon Vellum to Helmsman Michael Jones. The crew members during theservice, Howard Jones, Neil Jones and Michael Haxby, all receivedframed letters of thanks from the Institution's Chairman.

Helmsman Michael Jones was in theboathouse on the afternoon of Sunday 5March 1995 when he was informed by amember of the public that there was aman in the water off Portland slip, just tothe north west of the station.

It was 1400 and, as this coincided ex-actly with the time of the station's weeklypager test, he immediately fired two ma-roons to assemble the crew.

Just five minutes later the station'sAtlantic 21 launched into heavy surf anda westerly Force 7 to 8 with a heavy swelland sea. Visibility was poor and the ebbstream had already started to run.

SevereThe lifeboat passed through the Rock

channel on the way to the casualty wherethe waves were 15-20ft high. Watchers onthe shore saw the boat clear of the watertwice, and the motion was so severe thatit was impossible to use the radio as thecrew needed both hands to stay in contactwith the boat. Although rough, the pas-sage was quite short and the lifeboat ar-rived on scene at 1410.

County Rescue - a rescue servicelargely funded by local councils - hadbeen diverted from the recovery of a deadhorse nearby, and the 6.5m rigid inflat-able with two crew members aboard ar-rived two minutes before the lifeboat.They were unable to recover the man aswith only two crew members aboard thehelmsman had to leave the controls tohelp, and onlookers say that she almostcapsized twice.

The seas were being reflected off thesea wall and were very confused, but thelifeboat closed with the casualty at thesecond attempt and after contact had beenmade with County Rescue control of thecasualty passed to the lifeboat.

Crew member Howard Jones grabbedthe man in the water and passed him tocrew member Neil Jones. At that mo-ment the boat peaked on a wave, but Neilrefused to let go and, even though he wasdragged overboard by his weight, he

managed to pass the casualty's arm tocrew member Mike Haxby.

Neil Jones was able quickly to pullhimself back aboard and it took the com-bined efforts of the three crew to bring the6ft 4in, 18 stone man aboard.

The man's clothing had gatheredaround his throat and had to be cut awayto allow resuscitation efforts by all threecrew members.

An ambulance had been called andhelmsman Michael Jones began headingback through the Rock channel whereconditions were so bad that even thoughthe speed was kept down to 6 or 7 knotsto help resuscitation attempts the casu-alty and crew were constantly swamped.Conditions at the launch site were stillbad and a net recovery had to be aban-doned after two unsuccessful attempts.

Michael Jones then decided to try abeach landing at Egremont, two milesfurther up the river, and all shore units

were diverted to this site.County Rescue was already at

Egremont, attempting to recover the bodyof the horse, but was waved clear to allowthe lifeboat to beach.

With great skill helmsman Jonesbeached the Atlantic in a space only one-and-a-half-times her own length, eventhough she was hit by a sea which swungher round through 90°. It then took allfour crew to carry the casualty ashore.Despite continuous resuscitation attemptsthe man had not shown any response andwas later pronounced dead on arrival atthe hospital.

DrenchedThe boat was relaunched by the beach

crew, who were all drenched when sev-eral waves broke over them.

Once back at her station the tide hadebbed sufficiently to allow a net recovery,at the second attempt.

The two crew members of CountyRescue received framed letters of appre-ciation signed by the Chairman and theDirector sent letters of appreciation to thefive shore helpers.

New Brighton's Atlantic class moves in and begins to recover the casualty from the water while CountyRescue waits a few lengths downwind.

TWENTY NINE PEOPLE RESCUED FROM INFLATABLE TOYS AND DINGHIES

madnessfor Rye HarbourRye Harbour's C Class inflatable lifeboatwas called out by Dover Coastguard at1115 on Sunday 9 July to what wouldprove to be probably its busiest day sincethe station opened.

Hot weather had drawn huge crowdsto Camber Sands in Kent (one Coast-guard later said 'I think most of Londonwas there!') and an offshore breeze hadfreshened to the point where it was busyblowing small inflatable toys out to sea.

Hastings lifeboat was already at thescene helping one inflatable ashore butbecause of her draft the all-weather Mer-sey class lifeboat could not get closeenough to return the casualties to thebeach. After Rye Harbour's C class waslaunched at 1120 and had arrived at thescene the Mersey returned to station toleave the inflatable lifeboat to continuethe service.

After fifteen minutes the C class hadalready taken two empty dinghies backto shore and returned to her station tochange a crew member.

Leaving the river mouth again, thelifeboat crew spotted a rubber dinghy

with two people on board, some half amile offshore. The occupants were trans-ferred to the lifeboat and taken back tothe shore with their dinghy.

The lifeboat assisted a further five din-ghies, and the crew soon realised that bythe time one casualty had been returnedto the shore some of those remainingafloat had drifted out into trouble.

The exhausted lifeboatmen requesteda crew change and were replaced at 1315.The lifeboat set out to the east, a quarter ofa mile from shore, to set up a boundary inwhich to keep the bathers and inflatables.

The crew then headed back to the westand, after receiving a report of a missingchild, requested Coastguard backup. Thechild was found safe and well shortlyafterwards.

The C class lifeboat continued to pa-trol the quarter-mile boundary despiteextremely hot weather conditions. Eventhough the Coastguard was by now mak-ing loud-hailer appeals on the beach ask-ing people not to take inflatables into thewater and despite broadcast appeals onlocal radio the mayhem continued! Dur-

ing the day the lifeboat dealt with numer-ous further incidents, including the res-cue of a drifting dinghy without paddles,a dinghy dangerously close to being sweptout to sea on the ebbing tide and return-ing numerous inflatables to the shore.

Between 1120 to 1636 when the life-boat finally returned to station, an in-credible 29 people had been rescued frominflatable toys and dinghies!

No survivors fromcapsized motor boat

The capsize of a Coastguard rigid in-flatable boat added a further twist to aservice by Salcombe lifeboat when shewas searching in heavy seas and anonshore Force 7 wind on 28 May 1995.

Brixham Coastguard had asked forthe immediate launch of Salcombe life-boat at 0713 after a small motorboatcapsized at Bigbury, by the mouth ofthe river Avon, throwing the two peo-ple aboard - a father and son - into thewater.

Salcombe's 47ft Tyne class lifeboat,The Baltic Exchange II launched andbegan the 30 minute passage to thescene, but as Coxswain/MechanicFrank Smith took the lifeboat aroundBolt Tail the Coastguards at Hope Covelaunched their own rigid inflatable andheaded for the search area. The boatarrived at the scene but soon capsized

in the heavy surf which was running.The lifeboat arrived on the scene at the

same time as an RAF helicopter fromChivenor and the two Coastguards fromthe boat were winched up out of thewater and taken safely ashore. The

Salcombe lifeboat was by this time invery heavy surf.

The Tyne began the search for themotorboat and its crew, and one casu-alty was soon located nearby and air-lifted ashore, sadly he had not survived.

The search continued for the secondperson known to have been aboard,but after nearly four hours in Force 6 to7 winds nothing had been found and, at1203, the lifeboat left the scene to returnto station.

OLDEST SAILING SHIP LOST ON CORNISH COAST

Three lifeboats searchfor survivors fromwrecked sailing shipLifeboats from three stations were involved in the search for survivorswhen the 137-year-old sailing ship Maria Asumpta foundered afterrunning ashore on the rocky North Cornwall coast on 30 May 1995.

The ship, believed to be the oldestsailing vessel afloat, was entering theCamel estuary in a fresh north-westerlybreeze when she hit rocks on the easternside of the entrance, near Rumps Point.

She began to break up almost imme-diately, as many will have seen in newsreports at the time.

Padstow's Tyne class lifeboat waslaunched at 1637 from just across theestuary and nearby Port Isaac's D classwas afloat a couple of minutes earlier forher three-mile passage to the scene.

Both boats were on scene within 30minutes, but there was little to be done.Of the 14 people aboard all but three hadalready been picked up by fishing ves-sels or climbed the cliffs of the point. Ahelicopter soon recovered the body ofone person from the casualty and bothlifeboats searched fruitlessly for the othertwo people who were unnaccounted for.

Bravery awardfor RNLIfundraiserArthur Gushing, chairman of theRNLI's Staines and Ashford Branchhas received an award for braveryfrom the Royal Humane Society as aresult of his actions when a motorlaunch blew up on the Thames.

Arthur is the resident lock keeperat Penton Hook Lock and was work-ing there one morning in February1995 when he heard an explosion andfound that a motor launch had blownup and was sinking fast.

Jumping onto the roof of the launchhe tore off the hatch to rescue a manwho was trapped below by a beamacross his chest. Pulling him into asafe position where he could notdrown Arthur rushed off for helpand then, with the aid of others, tookthe man to safety and administeredfirst aid.

The search was resumed the follow-ing day in slightly calmer conditionswhen the Padstow and Port Isaac life-

The final death toll following the lossof this historic vessel stood at three.

Lifeboatman leaps aboardrunaway speedboatAn incident on 29 July 1995 in which aspeedboat owner fell overboard whileretrieving his brother from the water leftone of them injured by the boat's propel-ler and with their boat careering aroundat high speed off a crowded beach, withno-one at the helm.

Mablethorpe's D class inflatable wascalled out and helmsman Tom Freemanmanaged to intercept the runaway sothat crew member Mick Simpson could

make a hazardous leap aboard and cutthe engine. Tom Freeman said 'it was amatter of split-second timing. If wehadn't stopped that boat it would havehit the crowded beach.' Mick Simpsomadmitted: 'my knees were a bit wobblywhen I realised what I had done!' Thethird member of the crew, AndyHollingsworth, had been ready to divein to drag Mick clear had anything gonewrong.

Howeverthe How's naval involvementis perhaps its most significant,and it is this which takes upthe majority of the volume.

And who could better beplaced to recount this historythan a man who was on theeditorial staff of the local pa-per, The Orcadian, for 34years? Bill Hewison not onlyhas a deep interest in - andknowledge of - this fascinat-ing stretch of water but is alsoable to recount it in a waywhich brings history to life.

The severe weather whichcan be encountered around theOrkneys and the vicious tidalstreams which run around andthrough Scapa Flow are partlyresponsible for there being nofewer than three lifeboat sta-tions there - two of them onthe Flow itself. Kirkwall,Stromness and Longhope life-boats all have a proud history- sufficient to warrant a sepa-rate chapter - but it isLonghope which is perhapsbest known to the general pub-lic after the tragic loss of TGBwith all of her crew of eight in1969.

Shipwreck Index of the British Isles - Volume 1by Richard and Bridget Larnpublished by Lloyds Register of Shipping at £49ISBN 0 900528 88 5This massive, large-format volume must cer-tainly fulfill the authors' intentions of being themost comprehensive listing of shipwrecksaround the British coast - or at least Dorset,Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Stilly whichare covered in this first volume. (It is the au-thors' intention that further volumes will ex-tend the coverage nationwide.)

With some 7,000 wrecks covered in thissingle volume (and tens of thousands antici-pated in the completed work) the informationon them is basic - being limited to that obtain-able in existing historic documents and records.As the compilers point out, the work of re-searching in depth even the 7,000 entries of

Volume 1 would be more than one personcould achieve in a lifetime, let alone the tens ofthousands eventually to be covered.

What the register does achieve is to grouppreviously scattered and often inaccesible in-formation in one volume so that anyone withan interest in a particular wreck can identify itand obtain enough leads to carry out furtherresearch.

The entries are listed chronologically withineach area, and with an alphabetical index to aidlocation.

Undoubtedly a very yaluable reference vol-ume, the review copy having already beenused in this way within our office!

A Short History of thePadstow Lifeboatby George C. Phillipspublished by the author at£3.25Padstow claims to be the sec-ond oldest lifeboat station inthe Duchy of Cornwall, beingset up in January 1827 mainlyas a result of Chief Officer ofCoastguards' efforts.

The north Cornwall coasthas been a dangerous area forshipping since the age of sail,when its geography seemedalmost tailor-made to take ad-vantage of the wind's habit offlying into the west or north-west after a south-westerlyblow.

With a rocky and inhospi-table coast to leeward Padstowmay have seemed a safe ha-ven, but shipping soon foundthat its approach was difficultand confusing and that thesands of the Doom Barstretched across its entrancewere very aptly named.

It is hardy surprising thateven the town's lifeboats havefallen foul of the elements,with disasters in 1867and 1900- when both of the station'slifeboats were in trouble and11 men were lost.

George Phillips is the sta-tion's Honorary Secretary and,in this latest version of hisbooklet, has brought his his-tory right up to date with thework of the current lifeboat,the Tyne class James Burrough.

The Memoirs of William JohnHarman 1854-1944Shipwrecks and Rescue offWells-Next-The-Sea Norfolkby Graham B. Walkerpublished by the author at£4.95Graham Walker is the currentcoxswain of the Wells lifeboatand it was while he was re-searching the history of thestation for a book on the sub-ject - due to be publishedshortly - that he found him-self referring again and againto a copy of some memoirswhich he had been lent.

These memoirs, of WilliamHarman, seemed to be the onlywritten history of shipwrecksin the area during the late 1800sand the early 1900s.

Graham discovered thatthe originals were lodged withthe Greenwich Maritime mu-seum, and while glad that theywere at least safe he felt thatthey should be more widelyavailable.

Hence, with the support ofHarman's family and of theNational Maritime museum,he set out to publish them - forwhich anyone with an interestin maritime history should begrateful.

Although essentially a lo-cal book this volume gives thereader a fascinating, first-handglimpse of the world in whichHarman lived.

The illustrations too are fas-cinating, bringing to life aworld long since forgotten.

Seeing thewood forthe trees...The air is heavy with the unmistakable smell of sawn timberand Stockholm tar and jangles gently to the sound of adistant bandsaw as I watch a boatbuilder ease a plank intoplace around the gaunt frames of an 18ft launch underconstruction. Somewhere nearby a mallet makes contactwith a caulking iron and not far away stands a log of hard-wood, sawn into wide planks and separated by small spacerswhile the timber dries naturally in the air.

I'm watching something that I last saw thirty years ago -skilled shipwrights creating a living, almost breathing boatfrom nature's raw materials. The fact that I'm watching anRNLI boat being built in this way casts some doubt on mycertainty that this is 1995, and it is only when a whiff ofepoxy resin from further along the shed reaches my nostrilsthat the feeling that somehow I've stepped into a time warpdisappears.

For the truth is that although this is 1995, and that allRNLI lifeboats are now formulated, mixed and mouldedfrom the very latest materials the Institution does still have ause for boats which are first grown, then sawn and lovinglyassembled piece by natural piece.

Lifeboats need to be as light as possible for their strengthin order to achieve the speeds we now demand, but there is aperverse pleasure in discovering that to get the crew out tosome of those technological marvels there is nothing betterthan a traditional, wooden boarding boat.

Oulton Broad, Suffolk there are usually two or three RNLIboarding boats in various stages of construction, built toseveral different designs to suit conditions at various lifeboatstations.

The shipwright I'm watching is easing a plank into thebilges of an 18ft, carvel launch (carvel planking is laid edge-to-edge, giving a smooth hull), while across the shed - behindan exquisite, almost-complete, teak and iroka steam launch -lies a 16-footer having the final touches put to her clinker(overlapping plank) hull.

In another corner two men carefullypersuade part of the second skin of a 20ftRNLI launch into place. This 20-footer is ofcold moulded construction, where three thinskins of timber are laid around the frame-work - first diagonally in one direction, thendiagonally again at 9Q° to the first andfinally fore and aft. It is from this corner ofthe shed that the smell of epoxy resinemanates, as a layer of this powerfulmodern adhesive is used to bond the threeskins together. This is a true blending oftraditional skills and modern materials, foralthough old lifeboats were built in a similarway (then just termed 'diagonal') the bestmaterial available at the time to hold theirmultiple skins together and to exclude waterwas calico, linseed oil, white lead paint andcopper fastenings. Good enough in theirtime, but not able to hold a candle to

modern adhesives!The RNLI's mix of modern high-tech lifeboats and

traditional wood boarding boats holds the same fascination -the best material for the job wherever it's needed. Fibre-reinforced composite has many virtues; it is immenselystrong for its weight, and can be designed to be strongestboth where it's needed, and in the direction of the greateststresses. Yet it is expensive and does not have the give, theflexibility and the 'life' which enables a traditional woodboarding boat to cope with the slings and arrows of itsknockabout life alongside quaysides, checking moorings andbeing a general jack-of-all trades. Experience has shown thatwood boats have a longer life than their plastics sisters - andare more economical as a result.

builder, and has done so for some 15 years. There are 10,13and 16ft clinker built boats, inboard engined 18 footers withcarvel and cold moulded hulls, plus the 20-footer now underconstruction - the first to this design and destined for StMary's on the Isles of Scilly. There has even been a highspeed cold moulded 18-footer, specially designed for Hum-ber lifeboat station and powered by a pair of 40hp outboard

| engines.But where can one find the skills to build these boats, and

I at a competitive price? There is an international resurgence intraditional construction, but the RNLI is fortunate in that ithas a symbiotic relationship with the International

| Boatbuilding Training Centre.Students come to the centre to learn and practice

I boatbuilding skills - and to do that they need to build boats.This means that the college needs to maintain a constantsupply of orders for the types of boat it needs to build, and to

] have them at the right stage of construction to suit thestudents needs.

It can hardly charge its paying students' labour out by thehour, so the college sets its prices for finished boats on amaterials cost-plus-percentage basis. This leads to verycompetitive pricing which, together with the College'sextremely high standards, ensures there are always moreorders than capacity. The college can therefore choose whichcustomers it deals with - and the RNLI is fortunate in that itis considered a very suitable one!

The College's teaching method means that each studentmoves from boat to boat, adding to his or her repertoire ofskills at the required time. This makes it almost impossiblefor the college to give a firm completion date. Again theInstitution is a more than suitable customer - there is acontinuing need for replacement boarding boats and so theRNLI always has orders placed at the College for futurework. The Institution knows it will receive boats of extremelyhigh standard, at an unbeatable price, and the actual date ofcompletion is immaterial as some six RNLI boats emergethrough the doors each year to meet the demand across thecountry.

The relationship works well - the RNLI gets excellentquality and prices, and at the same time is able to help buildup shipwright skills for future generations. In return theCollege is able to help the Institution and build a variety ofboats without too much pressure for completion dates.Flexibility helps too - one 18-footer was intended to be carvelbuilt, but the college needed a cold moulded order to fit theirtraining programme... Could they build her this way instead?

Sail training vessels in for repair and refurbishment, steamlaunches in teak and iroko, 8ft pram dinghies, a 55ft replica'sof Joshua Slocum's world-girdling Spray and several othercruising yachts crowd the building shed. Bandsaws whine,chisels clunk, planers whir. This may be a step back in timein some respects - but it is to a past with an assured future.

The International Boatbuilding CollegeThe International Boatbuilding College's origins can betraced back more than 20 years, when local boatbuildersbecame aware that general traditional skills were in dangerof disappearing as yards began to specialise in certainaspects of construction. Soon 16 boatbuilders in EastAnglia were involved and the centre began its training,essentially as a replacement for apprentiships and with theyards funding their students.

However each of the yards had a need for specific skills.and obviously preferred the centre to concentrate on

these. Predictably the requirements were different for eachcompany, and so the centre found itself being pulled in manydirections as it tried to meet these needs.

Eventually the current managing director, John Elliot,took over the operation as a commercial concern, setting upas an independent centre of excellence for the marine tradeand with the students funding their courses themselves.

So far some 1,200 students have taken the one-yearcourse, with 98% of them achieving passes at City andGuilds and 58% of Distinctions. More than 15% of studentshave gone on to set up their own boatbuilding businesses.

Although visitors are always welcome at its Poole headquarters and depot, the RNLI makes aspecial effort every two years, throwing the whole site open to visitors for two days and puttingon displays and demonstrations to illustrate its work. This year's event was held on July 28and 29, and attracted an estimated 6,000 visitors.

Singalonga Lottery!The Open Days provided a wonderful backdrop for the draw forthe RNLI's 70th lottery. Max Bygraves made a special returnvisit to Poole on Saturday 29 July to draw the winning ticketsfrom the drum, which had been set up on the quayside. In frontof a large crowd of visitors and staff he drew the winning tickets,cracking jokes along the line, much to the amusement of allpresent.

The draw, which raised £112,181, was supervised by thedirector, Lt Cdr Brian Miles, and the draw promoter AnthonyOliver, deputy head of fundraising and marketing.The prize winners were:£2,000 R.F. Fishguard - Trent class Blue Peter VIIOn 17 June 1995 Fishguard's brand new Elm Trent classlifeboat Blue Peter VII was officially named - and, to judge bythe number of young people gathered on the foreshore forthe ceremony, it was clear that 'Blue Peter' viewers were outin force. They had come to witness, come rain or shine (andthere was both in quick succession), the crowning moment ofthe BBC programme's phenomenally successful appeal whichhad transformed over a million packages of bric-a-brac intocash for a fleet of six inshore lifeboats and the new Trent forFishguard.

Lewis Bronze, 'Blue Peter's' editor, left no one in anydoubt about how proud he and his team felt in handing overthe lifeboat on behalf of his viewers to RNLI chairman, SirMichael Vernon. It was a gift, he said, from a community ofthe air to a community of the sea.

Sir Michael paid tribute to 'Blue Peter' for allowing suchan extraordinary relationship to develop between its mil-lions of young and not so young followers and the RNLI overmany years. He also reminded the gathering that the RoyalMail had been instrumental in the success of the appeal bydelivering all the packages free of charge.

The bilingual service of dedication was led by The RightReverend Ivor Rees, Bishop of St Davids, with music pro-vided by the Good wick Brass Band and the Fishguard HighSchool Choir.

The moment for which so many had been waiting camewhen all three 'Blue Peter' presenters, Diane-Louise Jordan,Tim Vincent and Stuart Miles stood, poised to release thebottle and give the lifeboat her name.

As the bottle crashed and the champagne fizzed, eyesmoved from the three television stars to the foredeck of BluePeter VII, moored a few feet from the waterfront, her orangeand blue gleaming in the intermittent sunlight. The cer-emony was complete, an RAF Sea King arrived flying thetraditional salute from the winch wire and everyone watchedas the platform party was ferried out to the new lifeboat.

Blyth - D class WrenSaturday 8 July 1995 dawned warm and sunny for the naming of Blyth's new D classlifeboat - the first of two to be funded by Messrs Sinclair, Roche and Temperley fromthe proceeds of a concert held to mark the 60th anniversary of the company and thecentenary of the City of London branch.

Burry Port - D class and new lifeboat houseSaturday 3 June 1995 saw the hand-ing over of Burry Port's new D classlifeboat and also the official openingof the lifeboat house.

The ceremony began with TomFrancis, chairman of the station, in-troducing Jeff Mankertz, divisionalinspector of lifeboats for the west,who described the lifeboat before MrsShirley, niece of the donor, the lateMiss May Lloyd, handed the lifeboatover to the RNLI. Commodore Hastie

USE, member of thecommitteeof man-agement, then passed the lifeboatand the keys of the new lifeboat houseinto the care of Les Williams, stationhonorary secretary.

Following a service of dedicationled by Reverend Harries, vicar ofBurry Port, assisted by local clergy,Tom Francis invited Mrs OlwenPhillips, president of Burry Port la-dies' guild to cut the ribbon to offi-cially open the lifeboat house.

The service of dedication was con-ducted by Father John O'Connor, vicarof St Cuthbert's Church and chaplain toBlyth lifeboat. Mrs Rae Williams, wasthen invited to name the lifeboat Wren, -the name chosen by the company be-cause D class lifeboats are the smallestlifeboats, a wren is the smallest bird andthe concert was held in St Paul's, whichwas designed by Wren!

Montrose - D classHolme Team 3The handing over ceremony of thenew D class lifeboat stationed atMontrose took place at the harbouron 21 July 1995.

The lifeboat has been provided bya donation from staff and customersof The Fleece Inn at Holme in York-shire, who have also funded the Dclass lifeboat stationed at Filey. Theirmany fundraising ventures on be-half of the RNLI have raised almost£50,000 to date.

Noel Smart, chairman of Montrosestation branch opened proceedingsand Archie MacKenzie, chairman ofthe executive committee of the Scot-tish Lifeboat Council accepted thelifeboat on behalf of the Institutionfrom Geoff Atkinson, proprietor ofThe Fleece Inn. He in turn handedher into the care of Captain NiallMcNab, the station honorary secre-tary at Montrose.

Following the service of dedica-tion led by the Reverend Tom Longof Montrose, assisted by ReverendL. Greenwood of Holmf irth, Mrs AnnAtkinson named the lifeboat HolmeTeam 3.

Representatives of other lifeboat stations,RAF Search and Rescue, emergency serv-ices and lifeboat guilds formed part of alarge gathering in front of Mineheadlifeboat house for the dedication andnaming of the station's new Atlantic 75inshore lifeboat on 11 June 1995.

In his introduction station branchchairman Bill McNab spoke of the longservice to Minehead lifeboat stationwhich had led to the recent award of asilver badge to Reg Woodley. MrWoodley then received his award fromCaptain Antony McCrum RN (Rtd), a lifevice-president of the RNLI.

After briefly describing the back-ground to the gift of a lifeboat by a ladywho had requested anonymity, RichardPowles, a trustee of her estate, formallyhanded over the Atlantic 75 to CaptainMcCrum, who gave her into the care ofKevin Escott, station honorary secretary.

The development and characteristicsof the Atlantic 75 were described by JeffMankertz, divisional inspector of life-boats (west).

The vicar of Minehead, the ReverendGeoffrey Wrayford, then led the gather-ing in a service of dedication, followingwhich Mrs Anne Powles named the life-boat Bessie.

The lifeboat was then launched andexercised off the boathouse in companywith the Barry Dock relief Arun classlifeboat which had crossed the BristolChannel for the occasion.

Newcastle, Co Down - D class Aldergrove

On 10 June 1995 the chairman ofNewcastle station branch, WillWilson, welcomed guests, particu-larly representatives from the RAFbased at Aldergrove whose person-nel had raised £11,000 to pay for thelifeboat.

Wing Cdr Mark Codgebrook, whoinitiated the appeal, handed the life-

boat to the station. Vincent Murphy,deputy launching authority, ac-cepted the lifeboat on behalf of thestation and Group Captain R.E.Wedge, senior RAF officer, North-ern Ireland, was then invited to namethe lifeboat Aldergrove.

Music for the occasion was pro-vided by Kilkeel Silver Band.

Poole - Atlantic 75 Friendly Forester II

Poole's busy new Atlantic 75 took a shortbreather on 15 August 1995 for her offi-cial naming ceremony, but even beforethe champagne was dry on her bow shewas off on another shout!

The lifeboat was donated by the An-cient Order of Foresters and handed overby High Chief Ranger John Oliver. TheHigh Chief Ranger's lady, Beryl Oliver,named the lifeboat Friendly Forester II,watched by dozens of Foresters, RNLIsupporters and holidaymakers who hadpacked the cramped quayside for theceremony.

Friendly Fores ter II has been called outon service 70 times and has saved threelives in the period between 26 April,when she went on station, and the nam-ing ceremony.

At 1900, while the guests were stillnibbling the celebration cake, the callcame from the Coastguard that a yachtwas aground on the Oyster Bank. TheAtlantic 75 and the Brede launchedwithin minutes and by 1930 another res-cue had been completed by the RNLI'sbusiest crew.

Relief - D class The Craft Club and C John Morris DFMOn Friday 28 July 1995, the first of thetwo Open Days at RNLI headquartersand depot, two new D class lifeboatsdestined for the relief fleet were handedover and named.

Lt Cdr Brian Miles, director, openedthe proceedings and welcomed the spe-cial guests attending the pint ceremonyand also the many hundreds of visitorson site at the time.

Mr Tom McMillan, treasurer of TheCraft Club, donors of D480, handed overthe lifeboat explaining that the 10,000-member club sprang from a 19th holeconversation between three members ofthe Rye Golf Club on April Fools Day1991. Having agreed that they 'Can'tRemember A Flipping Thing' they de-cided to celebrate the comforting fact byforming a club, open to young and old ofboth sexes, with the sole object of raisingfunds for their three favourite charities.Members now come from 45 countriesacross the world. Later in the proceed-ings Jim Marsham, founder member andsecretary of the club, named the lifeboatThe Craft Club.

The second lifeboat D483 was handedover by Adrian Keeble, appeal co-ordinator, the Worked All BritainAwards. This group of amateur radioenthusiasts raised the money for the life-boat to mark the 25th anniversary of the

group and it was named C John MorrisDFM by the widow of the founder of thegroup, Mrs Veda Morris, in his memory.

Both lifeboats were accepted by MrsRichard Saunders, chairman of theRNLI's fundraising committee and amember of the committee of manage-ment. The lifeboats were dedicated bythe Reverend Stanley Holbrooke-Jones,Rector of Poole.

West Kirby - D classThomas JeffersonOn a gloriously sunny day the serv-ice of dedication for the new D classlifeboat Thomas Jefferson took placeat West Kirby Marine Lake on 26April 1995.

Mr A.S. Frith MBE, chairman ofHoylake and West Kirby stationbranch welcomed everyone to theproceedings. George Rawlinson,deputy divisional inspector of life-boats (west) described the history ofthe D class lifeboat and outlined itsperformance and importance withinthe RNLI fleet.

Mrs Marion Jefferson, honorarysecretary of High town ladies' guild,who provided the funds to purchasethe lifeboat in memory of her hus-band Thomas, a former member ofthe merchant navy, recounted hislove of the sea and his desire for hisashes to be scattered at sea. It wouldgive her great satisfaction to knowthat her husband's name would liveon in this special way. She handedthe lifeboat over to the Institution'sdirector, Lt Cmdr Brian Miles CBEwho accepted her on behalf of theRNLI and delivered her into the safehands of Lt Cdr R.H. Jones MBE, sta-tion honorary secretary, who ac-cepted her on behalf of the station.

The service of dedication was ledby the Reverend J. Ball, lifeboat chap-lain, and was followed by MrsMarion Jefferson naming the life-boat Thomas Jefferson. A short dem-onstration by the crew was appreci-ated by everyone, including the largecrowd who had come to West Kirbyto enjoy the sunshine.

The legacyifeline

Legacies are a vital element of the RNLI's funding, particularly for long-termcapital expenditure. With signs of a decline in this source of income we examinethe ways in which a legacy can indeed offer a lifeline to casualties of the future

When Sir William Hillary launched his 'Appeal to theBritish Nation' in 1824, he could scarcely have imag-ined that more than 170 years later the Institution hefounded would be preparing to meet the challenge ofsaving life at sea into the secondmillennium - and of maintainingthe level of funds necessary tomeet that challenge in a worldwhich had changed beyond allimagining.

Yet that is precisely the situa-tion which the RNLI is in today asa new generation of 25-knot, all-

'weather boats goes on station around the coasts of theUK and the Republic of Ireland. Although these newSevern and Trent class lifeboats will reduce the timetaken to reach casualties their design, development andconstruction will require an investment of some £130m

over the next few years. Maintaining these new boats,providing the facilities needed ashore and equippingtheir crews will add further to the amount of fundsrequired.

Meanwhile, nothing stands stilland the Institution's designers arealready at work on the develop-ment of more new lifeboats, thenext project being the replacementfor the current slipway-launchedTynes when they reach the end oftheir service lives.

It is this long-term commitmentwhich makes the RNLI's situation unique - it is com-mitting itself to heavy expenditure to ensure that anefficient lifeboat service is not only available today, butalso in the foreseeable future. Yet to do this it must beable to rely on a secure source of equally long-term

Although 'super-legacies', ones that can fund an entire lifeboat,hit the headlines, it is not surprising that the majority of bequestsare much more modest. This, of course, makes them veryvaluable to the RNLI, as they can be used for many differentpurposes, perhaps topping up a local appeal to provide thebalance of the cost of a much needed lifeboat, or to fundparticular items such as engines or navigational aids.

For example, in 1993 the appeal for the Arbroath lifeboatInchcape raised £232,081, which although a very creditableamount was far short of the cost of a Mersey class lifeboat. Thebalance of £365,747 needed to fund and provide this muchneeded lifeboat was secured by grouping together 13 legacieswith an average value of just over £28,000.

The Swanage lifeboat Robert Charles Brown, named after alocal lifeboat hero who served in the crew for over 50 years, wasalso funded in this way. Nine legacies provided 45% of the totalcost, with among them a bequest of £500 which paid for aportable VHP radio.

Research undertaken for the RNLI suggests that fewersupporters will be able to leave large legacies, and the risingcosts of building lifeboats will also make individually fundedboats less common. We can therefore expect to see even morelifeboats paid for by groups of relatively modest legacies.

Arbroath's Mersey class lifeboat Inchcape - seen here after hernaming ceremony in 1994 - is a good example of the way in whicha number of smaller legacies can be grouped together. 13 legacies,with an average value of £28.000 were used to 'top up' a localappeal and fund the lifeboat which cost some £600.000 at the time.

By coincidence the 'News' pages of this issue of THE LIFEBOATannounces one of the so-called 'super legacies', one largeenough to fund all, or virtually all of a new lifeboat.

With Trents now costing £1 m each and the larger Severnsnow needing £1.4m to put afloat the number of whole-boatlegacies is likely to fall, as is the number contributing more thanthe 50% traditionally needed to choose the lifeboat's name.

However the estimated £1m left to the Institution by theworld-girdling yachtswoman Susan Hiscock will ensure that thename Wanderer, carried by every one of the cruising yachtsowned by herself and her late husband Eric will live on - on aSevern or Trent.

Susan and Eric Hiscock were well known to the yachtcruising fraternity, with several circumnavigations under theirbelts, and were authors of many books recounting their travelswhich were often considered 'bibles' for those who emulatedthem.

funding, which has traditionally been provided bylegacies - gifts in the wills of supporters.

Although subscriptions and donations from mem-bers make a tremendous contribution to funding thelifeboat service, it is a fact that 60% of the funds neededto maintain the service are thanks to gifts supportershave made after their lifetime.

With the number of lifeboat launches increasing withevery passing year and need to provide modern life-boats and equipment into the future the importance oflegacy gifts continues to increase.

It was therefore quite disconcerting for the RNLI todiscover that legacy income had fallen by some 4%during 1994, and that the decline has increased during1995. This may not sound like a huge fall, but due to theimportance of legacies to the Institution - particularlyfor long-term funding - it is a significant drop. Inmonetary terms it means that the RNLPs 1995 incomecould be some £4m down on 1994. Put another way,£4m is three new all-weather lifeboats or 65 newAtlantic 75 rigid inflatables!

Fortunately the Institution's finances are soundenough to avoid any cutbacks in service - which havealready been forced on other charities in a similarsituation - but if the decline in legacy income continuesthe RNLI could be forced to dip into its reserves asearly as this year or next.

At the moment it is not known whether the fall ismerely a 'blip' or the harbinger of a continuing decline,affected by factors as diverse as falling property valuesand increased life expectancy.

However, the importance of legacies to the RNLI'slife-saving work means that it is crucially important tobe able to predict accurately what level of legacyincome the Institution can expect to receive in thefuture - which explains why members received a letteron the subject in their previous issue of THE LIFEBOAT.

The purpose of the letter was to establish whether ornot RNLI supporters were planning to leave a legacy tothe Institution in their will - and asked whether theywould give an idea of their intentions, anonymously ofcourse.

The response was staggering and, to date, more than14,000 replies have been received, more than a third ofthem positive. Although the Institution was verypleased to hear how many supporters intended to leave

it a legacy, the information from those who had, as yet,made no plans was almost as valuable, as informationon the number of legacies which can, or cannot, beexpected in the years to come will be a great help tofinancial planning.

The letter was not intended as a fundraising exercise,but the replies included enquiries from a substantialnumber of supporters asking for more information onhow to make a gift to the RNLI in their will. As a resulta new booklet, called 'Preserving All You Value', hasbeen written — in plain English and designed to help allmembers wishing to help secure the future of thelifeboat service in this way.

The booklet contains all the information necessary tomake a will - or to update one - including suggestedwordings for the main types of legacy. It aims toinclude everything needed when preparing to visit asolicitor.

'Preserving All You Value' is free, and can be ob-tained from the address given in the box on this page.

As well as containing 'legal' information - includingthe circumstances in which it becomes necessary tobring an existing will up to date - the booklet alsoincludes a wealth of material about the history of theRNLI, together with some startling illustrations of howcosts have risen over the years since Sir WilliamHillary's appeal.

For instance, even as late as 1895, the entire costs ofrunning the service for a whole year amounted to just£75,000. Now, some £170,000 is required to keep thelifeboat fleet operational for a single day. Even allow-ing for inflation this demonstrates clearly how timeshave changed and the level of support a modern andtechnologically advanced lifeboat service needs.

The RNLI, as ever, depends entirely on voluntarycontributions, and legacy gifts and pledges will con-tinue to be needed to take the RNLI into the newmillennium and to maintain the lifeboat service notonly today and in the next few years but also into theforeseeable future.

Thanks to Alderney...The RNLI has always been our favourite charity. During a Channel crossing on 19June in our 29ft yacht we had good reason to be grateful for the support we andcountless others have given the Institution.

Conditions for the crossing from Salcombe to the Channel Islands were close toideal. What we had not bargained for and could not have predicted was thefouling of our propeller, mid-Channel, and the subsequent disappearance of theforecast Force 4 wind. We were left with no means of propulsion in a potentiallydangerous situation near the Casquets TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme, the commercialshipping 'lanes'- ED) into which we were subsequently swept by the tide.

Following radio exchanges with St Peter Port and Alderney harbour radio wewere safely towed in to Braye harbour by Alderney's Trent class lifeboat Earl andCountess Mountbatten of Burma. The courtesy and consideration shown by thelifeboat crew did not end there. They contacted an amateur diving group operat-ing in the harbour and within 30 minutes of mooring up, our propeller had beencleared of a large quantity of fishing net and line. The divers, who had interruptedtheir holiday activities to help us, refused to accept any payment.

It was hard to feel, at the time, that we were in serious danger. The sun wasshining, the sea was calm and no-one had been hurt. But danger there was. Iknew very well that we had no hope of making any safe port before nightfall andno chance of avoiding eastbound shipping in the TSS. We owe our safe arrival inAlderney (and quite possibly much more) to the RNLI and we shall be forevergrateful.

... to Sheerness...I am writing to you to commend theactions of the coxswain and crews ofthe Sheerness lifeboat and inshorelifeboat on the afternoon of Friday 19May in response to an emergencysituation following a fire aboard mysailing yacht Romilda south of theMedway approach channel.

The situation was potentially life-threatening with the fire in danger ofbecoming out of control and always therisk of explosion from inflammablematerial or liquid.

I will always remember the feelingof relief on seeing both lifeboatsapproaching at speed and I cannotoverstate how impressed I was with theefficiency, professionalism and goodseamanship of both crews. Theydisplayed considerable courage also infighting the fire and I would ask thatyou pass on my thanks and deepappreciation for what they did.

My yacht was saved, albeit badlydamaged, and myself and my crewwere safely landed ashore. I amsincerely grateful for the parts playedby your crews which were in the besttraditions of the RNLI.

... and St DavidsI have recently returned from a shortholiday in St Davids, Pembrokeshireand stayed, as I have done for manyyears, at the Old Cross Hotel.The bar manager turned out to beMalcolm Gray, coxswain of the StDavids lifeboat at nearby St Justinians.On learning (through my RNLI poloshirt) that I was a member, he sug-gested that we went down to StJustinians.

We duly arrived and met the chiefmechanic, John Bateman, to whom wechatted (and listened!) for about anhour. He was most interesting andmade our visit to the lifeboat more thanworthwhile.

On returning to the hotel for a pre-lunch drink we met several members ofthe crew and had a very pleasantsojourn!

I thought that I should like to recordour appreciation and thanks for theexcellent way we were received andtreated and how much we learnedabout the service, the vessels used andso much more.Good luck to the future of the RNLIand many thanks.

...and to SwanageThank you for rescuing myself andothers aboard the yacht Rumpus west ofSt Alban's Head during a Poole yachtclub race from Poole to Weymouth on20 May. We were on the rocks as aresult of the skipper's absent-mindedness, with an unusable rudderand the yacht was in danger.

The speed, professionalism andsensitivity of the RNLI's response toour need was truly awesome. We had ahelicopter, the Swanage lifeboat and aninshore lifeboat with us in what seemedlike no time at all. We were towed backto Swanage and I was given a lift to thelocal bus station, a sympathetic andgenerous gesture.

Please convey my sincerest gratitudeto the Swanage crew and othersinvolved. All four of us aboard theyacht are members of the RNLI anddoubtless will not forget that Saturday.

The missing yearsI have just finished reading the Spring1995 issue of THE LIFEBOAT which, Ihasten to add, I always enjoy. How-ever, there is one omission which Ishould like to correct on page 318under the heading ...and in NewZealand.

The article written by Dave Jeevesof Exmouth branch describes meetingup with an ex-RNLI Liverpool classlifeboat, now converted to carryingpassengers at New Plymouth in NewZealand. After describing how thelifeboat served at Bridlington between1953 -1967, there was a seriousomission. This lifeboat was purchasedby my Institution in 1969, shipped toNew Zealand and put into full servicein 1970 at Sumner, being re-namedRescue III. She served with distinctionfor 22 years before being sold to aprivate buyer in New Plymouth in1992.

I was coxswain when Rescue IIIretired from active lifeboat service. Itssuccessor is a Rother class fromSennen Cove and is proving verypopular with our volunteer crew. TheSLBI enjoys very close association withthe RNLI and it is always a pleasure towelcome enthusiasts from other partsof the world - particularly from theUK.

The reasons whyWhile staying in Mousehole last November/December, my husband and I walkedto Land's End from Sennen Cove. At Land's End I bought a fascinating bookabout the tragedy of the Penlee lifeboat and on our return to Sennen Cove wevisited the lifeboat station.

Building historyRecently I re-read the Spring issue ofThe Lifeboat and was particularlyinterested in the letter on page 305from David Herriott referring to boathouses on Holy Island. You haveadded notes regarding three boathouses on the island. The one built in1908 was by Messrs J. Shewell and Coof Darlington and was of oak construc-tion with oak pins at all joints. Myfather was the foreman joiner, hisname being W. H. Thompson. Heoften later told me about his work onHoly Island and also on various otherremote islands in the north. I hope thisinformation might be of some interestto you.

From The Life-Boat of 1870

At a time when the RNU'sinamie from legacies is under scrutinyit is interesting to look back to the Institution's earliest days ami thewn\/ in which lifeboat* were funded.

The Gift Life-boats of the NationalLife-Boat InstitutionFourteen years since a movement commenced of analtogether novel character in the life-boat work, andwhich is without precedent in this or in any othercountry. At that period a benevolent lady presented theNational Life-boat Institution with the cost of a new life-boat, to be stationed at a part of the coast where onewas needed. Another life-boat soon followed from agentleman. A third was presented by a yacht club: anda fourth was given by a lady as a thank offering after aprovidential preservation from drowning. Rapidly thegenerous spark was fanned into a flame and new boats,as fast as they were required on the various coasts ofthe United Kingdom, were presented to the Society.

Many of these noble gifts assumed the shape ofmemorials to departed relatives or friends, the first ofwhich was given by two surviving sisters, in memory ofa third to whom they had bid a last farewell, and whichboat bears the affecting and affectionate name of TheSisters' Memorial. Next came inland towns, Ipswichbeing the first, some of the inhabitants of which, feelinga desire that their own communities should be repre-sented on the coast as performing their share of thenational duty of affording protection to shipwreckedpersons, in the only manner in which they could do so,appealed to their fellow-townsmen, and soon many ofsuch inland places were represented by their ownboats. Our chief manufacturing towns and cities beingconspicuous amongst the number.

Again, various public bodies of men, such as thegreat Mutual Benefit Societies, the Civil Service, theuniversities, the yacht clubs, commercial travellers,Sunday schools, and the subscribers to public jour-nals, the Society of Friends etc. and l.iitly, standing byitself in kind, the noble gift of £2.0uu lor the provisionand endowment of a life-boat station, by a firm ofParsee Merchants. Messrs Cama and Co.. on retiringfrom business in London, as an acknowledgement of,or thank offering for their success, and in testimony oftheir appreciation of the kind reception they had uni-formly met with from the inhabitants of London.

In this manner it has come to pass that, as a greatand enduring monument of the benevolent feeling andvoluntary duty, if we may use the term, of the people ofthis country, the grand fleet of splendid and perfectly-equipped life-boats which belongs to the Life-boatInstitution now encircles our coasts. That fleet, at thepresent time, consists of no less than 220 boats and ofthat large number 212 have been spec-ml u:.: . > r . as inthe case of a very few of them, have b< MI ifl 'ipted bypayment of their existing value.

Barry Bennetthas been cox-swain of StMary's, Isles ofScilly lifeboatsince 1991.Barry, who is afisherman, firstjoined the crewin 1979 andserved as sec-ond coxswainfrom 1985 untilhis appoint-ment as cox-swain.

He wasawarded aBronze medalin 1993 in rec-ognition of hisoutstanding courage, skill and seamanship when the life-boat Robert Edgar rescued the sole occupant of the yachtBacarale which was swamped by heavy seas in very shallowwaters off Port Cressa Bay on 12 September. The loneyachtsman had anchored in the bay, but in winds gusting toForce 9 and breaking seas was soon in difficulties. Afterseveral attempts the lifeboat closed the casualty and thesurvivor was hauled on board just as the yacht was engulfedby waves and sank.

A donation of £25,000 was recently pre-sented to John Clugston, chairman of theSouth Bank Committee Humber lifeboatappeal by Stuart Pettifor, managing di-rector of British Steel (Sections, Platesand Commercial Steels) on board theHumber lifeboat Kenneth Thelwall.

Berkshire barges inDespite its distance from the seaWargrave, a Thames-side village in Berk-shire, gives excellent support to the Insti-tution with a record sum of £9,000 for-warded to HQ in the last financial year.

In addition to the more conventionalmethods of fundraising the local branchrecently hosted a buffet supper and drinksparty aboard the magnificently restoredUniversity College barge The Univ whilstit was moored on the Henley Royal Re-gatta course. The barge was made avail-able to the branch during Regatta weekthrough the generosity of David Sherriff,managing director of Thames and KennettMarina who own the barge.

The Reading Blue Coat School swingband provided musical entertainmentand over £700 was raised.

Mr Pettifor said British Steel's deci-sion to support the appeal is because of itsconnection with the Humber. Almost 10million tonnes of raw materials and fin-ished products are shipped annually toand from British Steel's nearbyScunthorpe works.

90 years youngLola Cooper, who has been fundraisingfor the RNLI for more than 25 years,recently celebrated her 90th birthday at alunch party organized by her fundraisingfriends.

Lola, a member of one of Ramsgate'soldest lifeboat families, is still an activefundraiser. She has been helping at theRNLI kiosk in Ramsgate harbour duringthe summer months and at the ChristmasShop in Ramsgate in the autumn andwinter.

Lola's brother Tom, was a coxswain ofone of the Ramsgate lifeboats, and hergrandfather and uncle both served on thelifeboat that went to the rescue of theIndian Chief, a service that resulted in thelifeboat coxswain receiving the RNLI GoldMedal.

Branching out togetherThe British Waterways Board held opendays on 16 and 17 July at their work-shop near Tring in Hertfordshire. Sev-eral surrounding RNLI branches wereasked if they would provide and sellrefreshments to the visiting public.

The branches taking part were Luton,Dunstable, Berkhampsted, Harpenden,

Welwyn Garden City, Hemel Hemp-stead and Knebworth, and betweenthem they raised some £800.

In addition, Berkhampsted branchran a souvenir stall, raising £478, andthe Luton branch with the Luton modelboat club, raised a further £161. Thewhole event realised a total of £1,479.

THE Steyning branch has been in existencefor two years, and during that time itshouse-to-house collections have increasedand together with the results from a mu-sical evening, film shows, an antiquesroadshow, plus other events, £3,261 hasbeen sent to HQ.THANKS to the generosity of local residentsBarmouth ladies' guild realised over£l,500from its annual cheese and wine party inJuly. Apart from cake and bric-a-bracstalls, tombola, name the doll, and a raffle,the main money-spinner was the auction,which raised £546 from donated gifts. TheHarlech Medieval Men entertained sup-porters with their sword fights and overthe past ten years this event has raised£15,000 for the guild.THE CHAIRMAN of Duns and district branchand a vice-convener of the Scottish Life-boat Council, Mrs Henry Douglas-Home,again masterminded the triennial carnivalat Mellerstain (by kind permission of theEarl and Countess of Haddington) whichresulted in over £5,000 for lifeboat funds.The Band of HM Royal Marines waspresent and among the many other attrac-tions were a sheep dog display, an Armyassault course, archery, a kite display and,last but not least, the famous racehorse,Desert Orchid, who drew admiringcrowds.LONG time supporters of the RNLI, theCivil Service Motoring Association(CSMA) and the Frizzell Group, recentlypresented Anthony Oliver, deputy headof fundraising and marketing, with acheque for £10,000 towards the new life-boat house at Lyme Regis. The presenta-tion, which took place at the Pilot Boat Inn,Lyme Regis, was made by Peter Jones,chairman of CSMA and Colin Frizzell,chairman of Frizzell Financial Services.The money had been raised through aseries of competitions in the CSMA's ownmagazine Motoring and Leisure. Since1983, when the two organisations beganjoint fundraising, over £190,000 has beendonated to the Institution.

Intents Fundraising!When Rosemary Hemsley, the secretaryof Billingshurst branch, hired a marqueefor the reception of her daughter's wed-ding, she ensured it would not be col-lected until at least the following Mon-day, so that it could be used on the dayafter the wedding for a Do-It-Yourselfbarn dance in aid of the RNLI!

People were invited to attend, supply-ing their own food and drink in the formof a picnic and to invent a theme for theirown particular group to follow.

Mrs Hemsley was away for two hourstaking a guest home after the wedding -and returned to find tableaux all over thelawn! Mrs Hemsley was invited to judgethe best tableau - which included a coun-try and western scene, a shipwreck, and agroup of pirates - but resolved the prob-lem by inviting her daughter and newson in law to undertake the task.

The winners were a group depictingthe shipwreck scene. A helium balloonrace, an auction and raffle all went to-wards raising a grand total of £735.85.

Roundabout resultsSouthend-on-Sea lifeboat station was ahive of activity on 14 August when theTeacher's Round Britain Challenge sail-ing race started from Southend Pier.

The RNLI was the official charity forthe event so as well as dressing the stationoverall and manning the souvenir shopand collecting boxes, the station showedoff its 3 inshore lifeboats and facilities tocompetitors, celebrities and organisers sothat their corporate sponsors could see atfirst hand where their donations werebeing used.

At the end of a hectic day the souvenirshop had sold more than £200 worth ofgoods and collecting boxes totalled £60,not bad for a Monday afternoon at theend of Southend Pier!

'Allo 'Allo, oo ees thees?

Actress Vickie Michelle, best known asYvette of "Allo 'Allo' fame, was per-suaded to join a mother-and-daughtercollecting team photocall at London'sLiverpool Street station during the Cityof London branch flag day in March.Vickie was actually at the station on anentirely different (and paid for) publicrelations mission, but couldn't resist help-ing out the RNLI!

Mrs Rene Fitzgerald (in the wheel-chair) raised over £580 and her daughterChristine Butler's box included a chequefor £100 - which didn't bounce!

The morning rush hour collectionswere an uphill struggle, not helped bythe trains running late, but with a goodteam collecting through the day and dur-ing the evening rush hour a splendidtotal of £3,944.88 was raised.

Going, going, goneHaving painted a superb picture of the Hoylake Mersey class lifeboat Lady ofHilbre inaction, marine artist Robert G. Lloyd donated it to the RNLI so that it could be usedto raise funds.

At the private viewing before a month-long exhibition of his paintings at theWilliamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead, the painting was auctioned, withBob Gouland of Phillips Auctioneers offering his services and finding a buyer

Local TV weather-man Bob Johnson opened the event buteven he was unable to use his connec-tions to clear the fog! The Newbigginladies' guild manned a variety of stalls,and there were displays by the lifeboat,local bands, dancing and the art club.THE pRESiDENTof Ashington Rotary Club,Ron Wilson, recently presented a chequefor £500 to Trixie and Mike Givens ofAshington branch. Trixie and Mikewere also made members of the clubroll of honour for 1995 in recognition oftheir outstanding contribution for serv-ice to the local community.MALCOLM Lloyd of Leominster recentlyundertook a sponsored swim for hislocal branch. Malcolm, a young manwith learning difficulties, is a keen sup-porter of the RNLI and swam 55 lengths-just over a mile. So far he has collected£325 from his sponsors, with more tocome.

Central Fundraising snippetsSome news of events and campaigns or-ganised by Central Fundraising at HQ:• A new buildings and contents insur-ance policy from the RAC is announcedin this issue of The Lifeboat, with a hospi-tal and health care package due to followin the Winter issue, and marine insuranceat the London Boat Show. All of theseinsurance policies will provide a benefitfor the RNLI.• Funds will also be raised by a newrange of posters from Guernsey ColourLaboratories - the first of the Port St MaryArun, taken by photographer RickTomlinson, with more will follow. Thereis also a flower service from Flying Flow-ers, and a new range of lifeboat crewmodels, some in limited editions, fromPeter Hicks, the well-known sculptor ofmilitary and sporting figures.(Further details of all of these services canbe found in the respective advertisementsin this issue.)• More than 6,000 chemists throughoutthe UK will see a new campaign thismonth, in which the RNLI is involvedwith Seven Seas, the suppliers of vitaminpills and health products.• Events held during the summer in-cluded the Teacher's Round Britain Chal-lenge, when the regions had the opportu-nity to raise funds at each of the stop-offpoints, and the self-righting trials of thenew Volvo-funded lifeboat, a Trent forGreat Yarmouth and Gorleston. This waspreceded by a competition to choose aname, won by 13-year-old JonathonGriffiths with the name Samarbeta - whichmeans'working together', for those of uswithout a strong grasp of Swedish,.• Finally the grand final of the 'My Gar-den' quiz will be held in the Victoria andAlbert Museum on 26 October 1995, withMagnus Magnusson as quiz master.

Lifeboat lessonsEnthusiastic children from Bedfordshireproved that fundraising for the RNLI canalso be fun raising. Each year, pupilsfrom St. Mary's Lower School in Clophillchoose a different cause to benefit fromtheir endeavours, and this year they raisedan impressive £525 for lifeboat coffers.

Following a presentation by LauraFagg, RNLI Eastern Region area organ-iser, the children enjoyed dressing up inlifeboatman's outfits. Each class took re-sponsibility for a week's fundraisingwhich included creating games and aSpring fair, to which children contrib-uted games, toys and bric-a-brac. Theweek's activities finished with a children'sdisco.

On their bikes!A civic appeal started by Cllr GeorgeParkinson, chairman of Wokingham dis-trict council in 1993 and pictured right,culminated in a sponsored cycle ride inApril and brought the final total to £11,700for his two-year term of office.

The cycle ride itself raised over £3,500and a water festival staged at Din tonPastures Country Park last year raisedover£6,000and wasaimed at funding thenew lifeboat house at Yarmouth, Isle ofWight. Other events included a barbershop evening and a children's carol concert.

Saddling upThe F J Owners Club is for the owners ofYamaha FJ 1200 and FJ1100 motorcyclesand organises regular runs and outingsas well as technical advice to members.

Each year events are arranged for rais-ing funds for charity, and this year mem-bers decided to raise money for the Hum-ber lifeboat appeal.

The FJ owners club charity rally washeld on 11 June and started from thevisitors' centre at the Humber bridge.Approximately 100 Yamaha FJs embarkedon a run over the bridge into the Lincoln-shire Wolds and back. They were joinedon this occasion by the chairman of theappeal, Colonel lain Bryce, who is a keenmotorcyclist.

He was delighted to accept the club'sgenerous contribution of £1,591, theamount raised from the charity rally andalso a sponsored charity run from Land'sEnd to John O'Groats which was under-taken in April by eight club members.They set off from Land's End at 6am andsix of them completed the course within24 hours - without breaking any speedlimits!

Theymade £56 for the Institution.Tin Kelsall branch arranged a musicalevening in the country house surround-ings of Cheshire's Willington Hall tea-turinga recital by the duo Perfect Choicefollowed by a buffet supper. An inshorelifeboat displayed outside the Hall un-derlined the purpose behind the highlysuccessful event, which raised £226.

For the last 12 years visitors to The FollyInn on the banks of the River Medina onthe Isle of Wight have been accosted by acharming lady rattling her lifeboat col-lecting box!

Friday 30 June brought glorious weatherfor Scarborough's lifeboat day and re-sulted in supporters collecting over £4,000.

The following two days of fundraisingactivities, which included a barbecue, araft race and a sea cadets assault coursesaw a further £5,000 being raised.

The Tetley dray horses were in attend-ance and are pictured demonstrating theversatility of RNLI collecting buckets!

In Brief

LIVERPOOL Marina was the ideal venue for theinaugural meeting of the South Liverpoolbranch in June. The new branch has beenformed by amalgamating Woolton ladiesguild and Aigburth and district branch, bothof whom have been active for over 30 years.More than 60 interested supporters attendedto hear the Lord Mayor speak about the tiesbetween the lifeboats and the Mersey. Anexcellent buffet was provided by the Marinastaff and the evening resulted in 26 newmembers joining the branch.SINCE 1979 Mrs Jean Mclvor of Staines hasbeen collecting pennies, both pre-decimaland decimal, and periodically sends a chequefor the relevant amount to Littlehamptonlifeboat station. This year has seen a chequefor £36 arrive on the treasurer's desk andbrings the total collected by Mrs Mclvor to£1,000 - all in pennies. Needless to say thetreasurer is delighted he receives a chequerather than the actual coins!THE Attleborough and district branch bor-rowed the model lifeboat Barham fromGorleston Model Club as a centrepiece forthree summer events, raising a total of£928.50.ONCE again the annual gymkhana and horseshow organised by Knaresborough ladies'guild was held at Gibbet Farm, Farnham in

May. The glorious weather attracted a goodnumber of entrants and supporters from allover the north of England and the proceedsof £2,900 were donated to the Humber life-boat appeal.LITTLEHAMPTON'S lifeboat week resulted in atotal of £1,840 being collected for the branch,helped both in Littlehampton and Arundelby the stentorian announcements ofArundel's town crier, Bill Beere.THE Kelsall branch organised an eveningwith RAF Search and Rescue at which ahelicopter winchman from RAF Valley de-scribed his unit's work, followed by demon-strations of items of survival equipment. Alady volunteer from the audience was kittedout in an immersion suit, flying helmet andlifejacket, with an air crew dinghy packadded. Persuaded to pull the appropriatetoggles she brought the evening to a spec-tacular close by inflating both lifejacket anddinghy. The audience of over 80 thoroughlyenjoyed the event which raised over £200.MEMBERS of the West Yorkshire Police sub-aqua club recently donated £400 to the Hum-ber lifeboat appeal. This splendid sum wasthe proceeds of the club's first ever black tiegala ball held in Wakefield and divers fromthroughout the region and even as far awayas Scotland and London attended.

Record BreakerJune 1995 saw the unveiling of the Hum-ber lifeboat appeal's attempt to hold thecountry's largest tombola. The event,which took place at the Princes Quay inHull, broke the record with 2,077 prizes,every one donated free of charge, andapproximately £4,000 raised.

The Humber lifeboat appeal bus alsowent on service in Hull this summer,resplendent in RNLI livery, and raised£2,000 from the advertising placed on it.It will be in service for the next 12 months- a great publicity vehicle for the appeal.

In the swimEven though Eileen Whittingham hadboth legs amputated through illness sheclimbed the 199 steps of Whitby Abbey in1986 to raise £1,331 for the RNLI and herlocal swimming club the Solihull Seals. In1988 she walked La Corbiere causewayon Jersey, raising £3,000 for the St Helierbranch through sponsorship.

Not content with that, this year Eileendecided to set herself the daunting targetof swimming 600m in 30 minutes at theTudor Grange swimming centre in Soli-hull. This time the beneficiaries of hersponsored swim were to be the Solihullbranch and, once again, the Solihull Sealsswimming club for the disabled.

There was little doubt that she wouldachieve her target but she passed the600m mark in just 24 minutes, a remark-able achievement.Eileen's efforts realised a superb £1,271.80.

AGM and Open DaysFirstly, thanks to all governors who at-tended the AGM in May and particularlythose who visited the membership stand.Many of those attending the AGM andthe annual presentation of awards dur-ing the afternoon purchased items fromthe range of membership insignia - whichhelped to raise funds on what was a veryenjoyable day for everyone involved.

The Poole Open Days again proved tobe a very popular event and both existingmembers and visitors were able to learnmore about the RNLI. Many new mem-bers were recruited as a result, and it wasa pleasure to meet so many members,new and old.

RecruitmentThe Southampton Boat Show takes placeas this issue of the journal goes to press,and with a well-placed stand and an en-thusiastic team the RNLI plans to put ona display which will encourage even morepeople to sign up and become members.

Once more the Institution will have astand at the London Boat Show, whichruns from 5-15 January 1996 and hopes,as usual, to recruit many new members atthis annual event.

Campaigns to recruit new membersby other means continue, with a mailingto selected areas during October and door-drops (unaddressed mailings) to certainpostcode areas throughout September.These will continue during October andNovember and as historically the autumnand winter have proved to be successfulfor generating new supporters, it will bethe busiest time for welcoming new mem-bers on board.

Deeds of CovenantA total of 688 members completed thedeed of covenant enclosed in the Springedition of the journal, resulting in a fur-ther £3,800 additional annual income forthe RNLI. Thank you to all members whohave considered helping the RNLI in thisway.

Signing a deed of covenant is an op-portunity to increase the amount of yoursubscription by a third, at no additionalcost to yourself. If you are a UK taxpayer(either through your salary, pension or

savings) you are eligible to sign the form,which will take effect from your nextrenewal date. It's a simple form of decla-ration that you pay income tax and, be-cause of the RNLI's charitable status, wecan reclaim from the Inland Revenue thetax you have already paid. If every mem-ber were to complete a covenant the RNLIcould receive a further £750,000 everyyear. Please contact membership serv-ices on (01202) 671133 who will be pleasedto send you further details.

LegaciesYou may be aware from our recent pub-licity that the RNLI is experiencing adownturn in its legacy income. Tradi-tionally, up to two-thirds of the Institu-tion's income has been received in thisway, but due to changing economic andsocial conditions there are indications ofa decline of some £4m of the £62m totalneeded during 1995.

RNLI LotteryDuring May 1995 the RNLI undertook asurvey to determine what effect, if any,the Camelot national lottery is having onits own quarterly lifeboat lotteries.

The findings were interesting, in thataround 50% of those members surveyedthought that the RNLI would benefit fromthe Camelot lottery. Furthermore, some10% said they gave less to charity since itsintroduction. You may be interested toknow that only 5.6p in every £1 spent onthe lottery is allocated between all eligi-ble charities. It is not known whether theRNLI will benefit from this and thereforewe would urge you to support the RNLIlottery as much as you are able by buyingour tickets. Don't forget to sell them tofriends and family as this can be a won-derful opportunity for us to bring onboard new support. Open all HoursNearly all of the Institution's 215lifeboat stations held a specialopen day during the Spring BankHoliday Weekend, most of themopening on the Sunday, 28 May.

An estimated 65,000 peoplevisited lifeboat stations around theentire coast of the UK and Irelandthis year, the first time that therehas been a co-ordinated campaignto have all stations open at thesame time.

Lifeboat RNL| COLLECTABLES

Through the media everyone is now more aware of the value of a large number of itemswhich fall under the heading of 'Collectables'.Over the years the RNLI has raised considerable sums of money through such donations.Below are items which can be used by the RNLI to raise funds to further its work of savinglife at sea.

STAMP ALBUMS - Supporters have donated their collections, raising thousands of pounds eachyear.

JEWELLERY - Unwanted or broken jewellery, silver antique spoons, and small objet d'art haveraised, over the past years, a very creditable sum.

WAR MEDALS & DECORATIONS - There are avid collectors of medals which are particularlyvaluable if the citation is also included.

COINSForeign - When returning from abroad, coins and paper currency can collectively be put to verygood use.British - There is also great value in old English/pre decimal coins.

AUTOGRAPHS - These are most collectable and raise good money when sold at auctions etc.

VICTORIAN LACE MAKING BOBBINS & THIMBLES - All highly collectable.

OLD MECHANICAL TOYS, DINKY TOYS, TEDDY BEARS, CHINA DOLLS - These itemsare in great demand by collectors.
