MEMORIALMEMORIESFall/Winter 2020

Last March 13th when the students and staff left Memorial for an anticipated two weeks,

little did we realize how the first pandemic most of us have ever experienced would impact our everyday life. I remember sitting in my office that first week after the shutdown and seeing no traffic on Lincoln Avenue for long periods of time and more people walking

dogs on campus than normal. The building may have been empty, but our students’ education continued as our dedicated faculty taught remotely. Like the many generations of teachers before them, they stepped up to the challenge, shared tips with each other and showed that even in the most trying of circumstances, the Memorial dedication to our students’ Catholic education is the reason we are here. The weeks turned into months, we graduated the class of 2020 in the auditorium with families and friends watch-ing our live stream, and phrases like “social distancing,” “disinfectant,” and “quarantine” started appearing in our daily emails. COVID-19 resulted in the cancellation of many events that are part of everyone’s high school memories including Baccalaureate, prom, the spring sports season, the musical, honors night, and graduation with families present. Instead they were replaced with memories we hope will be unique to the Class of 2020 just as our classes from the early 40s prayed World War II would be unique to their classes. And then in early July, like springtime in the middle of summer, the campus started coming back to life. After the longest period of time in our history without a student in the building, they started appearing at practices, calling to talk to counselors, and dropping by Holy Cross Hall to purchase uniforms and books as we all began to prepare for a school year like no other. In a building that was built to teach 40-plus students in a classroom, we quickly realized how few desks could fit in a classroom with the required social distancing. We now have one-way hallways, are buying disinfectant by the five-gallon bucket, hand sanitizer is everywhere you look, and a face mask is part of our school uniform. As I write this, we are eight weeks into the school year, and it has not been without it struggles. For the first time since 1925, we have not been able to gather to celebrate Mass monthly as a school community. I miss the community of the Catholic Church that brings us together at Mass, to educate our children in a Catholic school, gather at church

social events, and take care of and look out for each other as Christ taught us. However, we will get through the day and this school year with our faith in God. I can’t help somedays to think that maybe this is God’s plan to make us all slow down, to use our phone to call (not text) and talk to a family member or an old friend, or take a walk and enjoy this beautiful world God created. With the challenges we have faced and the unfore-seen future, now more than ever, we could use support for tuition assistance. The cost of a Catholic educa-tion that many of us did not have to worry about when we were in school is a sig-nificant sacrifice for many of our families. We are grateful for the tremendous sup-port shown by our alumni and friends during this pandemic. With more than $2,000 raised from the sale of the Memorial face masks, the endowment income from champions for Catholic education over the years, contributions we received to award SGO scholar-ships, and from annual fund contributions for tuition assistance, we were able to award financial assistance to

every family that applied. On behalf of these students, we thank you for your generous support. Until we can gather again as a Memorial com-munity within six feet, with no masks, and share a handshake or hug, stay Tiger strong. Stay safe and may God bless you and your family.

John K. Browning, MHS ’72, President

CAMPUS MINISTER’S MESSAGE:Live Life Abundantly

I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10). These are the words Christ places before us in the Gospel of John, inviting us into something greater; something that we ultimately cannot pass up. This is an

opportunity for individuals, families, and cultures to shift their focus from surviving to thriving, and Jesus makes it clear there is only one Way, one Truth, and one Life to go through in order to obtain this. It is this invitation that is at the heart of Christianity: desiring others to live their life to its fullest potential. Christ’s presence in this school is not only good but also necessary for our mission as RMHS continues to form and develop strong leaders. At the core of each person’s growth is this essential human formation element, which is interwoven with the universal call to holiness. Students are challenged to discern how God is calling them in life to be happier, holier men and women. Campus ministry provides opportunities for time in prayerful silence called “Come Rest in Jesus,” which more than 50 students have taken advantage of already in order to discern God’s will in their life. There are also other initiatives offered called “Become A Better You” for our young women and “Discerning Hap-piness” for the young men at Memorial. Students explore what it means to be authentic, virtuous, and to grow with

“ other men and women into respectable, dignified people. These resources are utilized by many men and women, seeking to be better people both person-ally and communally. I am not listing all of these items to boast about the opportunities Memorial has to of-fer; rather, it is pivotal to understand this element of human formation: without the growth in identity as a Catholic, life-preparatory school, our mission weakens. If we do not have life in Christ, we cannot thrive. Communicating this message to our students, faculty, families, alumni, diocese, and our culture matters. And PRAISE THE LORD for the many wonderful students, faculty, families, and alumni in our diocese and elsewhere! I ask you to continue to sup-port the mission of Reitz Memorial, particularly in further-ing Christ’s presence on campus, that we, as a community of faith, might continue to accept the invitation Christ has generously offered us: to live life abundantly. Christ’s Peace and God Bless,

CAMPUS NEWS<<

Earlier this year, the Memorial family lost a won-derful woman and a true Tiger. Lisa Popham was born in Evansville on Feb. 12, 1958. She attended Castle High School and graduated from Indiana

State University. She then went on to receive her mas-ter’s degree in art from the University of Evansville. Lisa joined the Memorial family 23 years ago as the assistant principal. She had the strength, love, and faith to support the faculty and all students at Memorial. Her

love for Memorial was truly evident every day for the past 20-plus years as she attended game after game, plays, musi-cals, academic competitions, banquets, and more. She had a heart of gold and lived her life filled with love. Many say she had a special gift for listening, connect-ing, and showing compassion to every teacher and student who came into her office for guidance. “She was more than our assistant principal, she helped so many of us through difficult times in our classroom and

life,” says Angie Lensing. “She always gave me a smile and hug, as if at times she knew I needed one with-out speaking. She was a blessing to Memorial in so many different ways.” Beyond her family, the India-napolis Colts, and music, there was nothing that gave Lisa more joy than interacting with Memorial students. Serving as an assistant principal can often be a thankless job, with all the phone calls, emails, and tough deci-sions, but Lisa never looked for adula-tion or credit for all that she did for the school. For her, seeing Memorial students succeed was all the thanks she ever needed. “My first memory of Lisa Popham is from my first day of freshman year as I nervously walked up the front steps of the school,” says Coy Hobson. “I remember feeling immediately at home in seeing Lisa’s friendly pres-ence welcoming students into the building. I could tell then that she was someone who really loved the

students. As I got to know Lisa later as a colleague and family friend, these initial impressions were con-firmed. I saw just how intensely she cared for the students of Memo-rial High School. Even though she did not

have students in class, she knew not only every student’s name but took genuine interest in their lives.” Coy goes on to say, “Being both family, friends, and colleagues, Lisa and I cherished the spe-cial connection we had through Memorial High School. I know I am not alone in saying her joy and simple kindness will be dearly missed. May we always imitate Lisa’s unrelenting advocacy for the students of Memorial High School.” This year, the Memorial football team has the honor of wearing a sticker with the letter’s “LP” on their helmets in memory of Lisa. It is incredibly fitting because there was not a more enthusiastic sup-porter of Memorial student athletes than Lisa Popham. Not only was Lisa devoted to Memorial, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. May we continue to uplift Mrs. Popham’s fam-ily in our prayers.

Lisa was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished the time she spent with her family.

THE NEW NORMALCOVID-19 has changed the way we learn, but it hasn’t diminished our faith

As of March 13, 2020, things in our world changed as we knew it. Little did we know that would be the last day of in-person classes for our 2019-2020 school year. Fourteen days of quarantine turned

into three months and things were changing ever so quickly with this novel virus. COVID-19 not only impacted the schools but also every aspect within our country and world. It would be an understatement to say we were disap-pointed we didn’t get to see each other one last time before school ended or how disheartening it was that spring sports were cancelled, as well as the spring play and many other activities and events. But during it all, our students and staff excelled! We are incredibly proud of our faculty and staff for embracing the unforeseen journey and ap-plaud all they did to ensure that a Catholic education was still provided to our students during virtual learning. We are thankful for our students who continued to impress us

with their work and dedication through all of it.  Since the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, things still are different, and we are embracing our new normal. Our faculty and staff are continuing to go above and beyond with in-person classes resuming, as well as virtual classes being offered for any student who may need to stay home. Our maintenance staff is providing a clean and sanitized environment to ensure the safety and health of all at Memorial. We may have to wear masks, practice social distancing, and utilize one-way hallways, but we are back together as a school and look forward to when we can safely hug and experience the high school years as they once were. Even though we cannot foresee when that time will be, we do know we have one constant in our lives and that is Jesus Christ. Our faith will pull us through these times and any future challenges we face. We are stronger and our faith is greater than ever!

2020 CAREER DAYRMHS welcomed more than 60 businesses to discuss career options

On Feb. 14, 2020, Reitz Memorial High School hosted its seventh annual career day. This event has grown larger each year, and this past year was no different. We wel-comed more than 60 businesses and almost 200 profes-

sionals into our gym to discuss their respective career paths with our students. The purpose of our career day is to expose our students to the various occupations and life paths available to them. They also learn about the steps necessary to advance in the career of their dreams. It also is an amazing opportunity for parents and alumni to get back into the building and interact with the students. We want to thank all of our wonderful presenters, volunteers, and staff members who made this past year’s career day the success it was!

THE SHOW MUST GO ONTheater Art Department puts on two one-act virtual plays By Rachel Johnson

This year for our fall theater production, we elected to do two one-act plays. The students who went to the

Indiana State Thespians conference back in January fell in love with “They Eat Sunshine, Not Zebras.” Since the characters are grass, I thought it was the perfect fit for this season since we could maintain student distance on stage, an important aspect during the uncertainty of COVID-19. This play was complemented well by the themes of “Oddball,” a comedy sketch style play. I was very pleased to work with TheatreFolk to license these titles because the license included the right to live stream performances from our stage or even Zoom in the event we had to go virtual. I’m so happy we were able to put the show together and perform, especially since we had to cancel the last production, our 2020 spring musical. The livestream worked well, and I am excited to be able to livestream our musical, “Little Women,” this April. I am so thankful

for everyone who helped us make this production a success and the support of our community that enables our students to take the spotlight both on and off stage.

LILLY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTSRMHS 2020 Seniors Elizabeth Broshears and Ethan Meunierreceive prestigious scholarship

C ongratulations to Eliza-beth Broshears and Ethan Meunier who were named by the Vanderburgh County

Community Foundation as one of three Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship recipients for the 2019-2020 school year. The Lilly Founda-tion Scholarship provides a full tuition scholarship to any Indiana college or university and is awarded based on academic merit and a selective inter-view process. “For me, receiving the Lilly Scholarship meant so much more than financial security for my future college experience,” says Elizabeth Broshears. “The Lilly Scholarship af-firmed a lifetime of dedication to aca-demics, service, and extracurriculars, as well as giving me the opportunity to positively reflect Reitz Memorial High School. After eight AP classes, countless tests, homework assign-ments, and a state championship, I can say Memorial 100 percent prepared me for any academic and

athletic pursuits in my life. However, Memo-rial also prepared me in less conventional ways. It taught me to turn to faith in all things, to build relationships and connections with every-one I meet, and to take joy in the many memo-ries that life brings. I am extremely proud and forever grateful to be able to say I am a Lilly Scholar, but even more so to say that I will always be a Memorial Tiger!” “These last few months here at Notre Dame have brought some of the greatest experiences of my life, and I couldn’t have made it here without Memorial and the Lilly Scholar-ship. I will be forever grateful for the Lilly Scholarship and the door it has opened for me, but it truly was Memorial that led me to the door in the first place,” says Ethan Meunier. “Being at Notre Dame has helped me realize how lucky I’ve been to attend two schools that care so much about developing the heart and soul in ad-dition to the mind. Notre Dame and Memorial both offer a holistic ap-proach to education that neglects no

part of the human experience, and I believe this trait manifests itself in the quality of alumni who come from each school. My four years at Me-morial have not only taught me how to be a good student, but

also how to be compassion-ate and how to be a leader. Someday I’ll probably forget everything I learned in the classroom, but the lessons Memorial has taught me about perseverance, sym-pathy, and teamwork will stick with me as long as I live. My time at Me-morial laid the foundation I’ve been building upon so far this year, and no matter how many assignments I miss or 8 a.m. classes I sleep through, I’ll still have that solid groundwork to fall back on. And as much as things have changed, I’m just glad that one thing has stayed the same for me: having the best football team in the state. Go Irish!” Memorial High School is incred-ibly proud to have graduated five Lilly Scholarship recipients in four years, more than any other high school in Vanderburgh County. This prestigious and competitive award is truly an incredible accomplishment!

2020 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDRMHS awards boys soccer coach Bill Vieth Jr.

Reitz Memorial High School has proudly stood on the foundation of faith, family, and service for more than 95

years. Since 1986, the Distinguished Service Award has been presented to a member of our Memorial family who demonstrates exceptional generosity of spirit and a commitment to our church, Catholic education, and Reitz Memo-rial High School through service. This year’s Distinguished Service Award recipient, Bill Vieth Jr., was recognized at the class of 2020 com-mencement ceremony in July. Bill graduated from Memorial in 1982 and has been the Memorial Boys Soc-cer coach for the last 34 years. Bill has been married to his wife Sara, who also graduated from Memorial in 1985, for 30 years. They have four sons, Tyler (Memorial class of 2010), Michael (Memorial class of 2013), Jack (Memorial class of 2015), and Shawn (Memorial class of 2019). After graduating from Memorial, Bill went on to attend St. Louis Uni-versity where he graduated in 1986 with a business and finance degree. Bill was one of the founders of Omni Plastics, LLC and served as the com-pany’s president from its inception in 1999 through 2018 before retiring. Bill strived for success in all that he did, including his passion for soc-

cer. He played for Reitz Memo-rial all four years under his father’s guid-ance as head coach where the Tigers won three straight state championships. Bill continued his soccer career in college play-ing for the Billik-ens. Soon after his college graduation, Memorial had an open head coach position for the boys soccer team. It was a perfect fit. Now 34 years later, Vieth Jr. continues to be one of the best in state history and has led the Memorial Boys Soccer team to six official IHSAA state cham-pionships (2007, 2008, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020). “Coaching the Memorial Boys Soccer team has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” says Bill. “The chance to represent our school, it’s alumni, staff, and student body all over the state of Indiana and the Midwest for the last 34 years is something I can only describe as a labor of love. The relationships with our coaches and the hundreds of play-ers I’ve had the honor to work with is

something that I will cherish forever.” “I think the friendships I gained and the comradery we had while we supported Memorial activities are the things that I remember the most. Now, almost 40 years later, those friendship still exist and we have lots of fun reminiscing!” he adds. Bill describes Memorial High School as being a special place, not because of the building or the location or the successes that it has accom-plished, but because of the people that have walked the halls for the past 95 years. He went on to say he is extremely proud to be a member of the Memorial family. It is because of his continued dedi-cation and desire to serve Memorial that Bill Vieth Jr. was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Reitz Memorial Distinguished Service Award. On be-half of the entire Memorial communi-ty, thank you Bill for your dedication, sacrifice, and love of Reitz Memorial High School.

COACH DYLAN BARNES SCHOLARSHIPAward goes to both a male and female senior involved in cross country or track and field By Beckie Schadler

The Coach Dylan Barnes scholarship was awarded for the first time in May 2020 to both a male and female member of the class of 2020. Congratula-tions to Ethan Meunier and Taylor Gries.

The class of 2020 is the last of the classes at Memo-rial to have had Coach Barnes as a teacher and/or coach. The scholarship was established in 2019 to commemorate

Coach Barnes, who died in March 2017. Dylan Barnes taught language arts at Memorial for 14 years while also coaching the boys and girls cross country team and the girls track and field team. Scholarship applicants were asked to share in an essay how they lived out one of Coach Barnes fa-vorite sayings, “Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard.” As evidenced in the responses to the essay, Coach Barnes impacted many lives. “Without having him as a coach, I would not be where I am today. Coach gave me confidence in

myself and pushed me to be the best I can be. He showed me that if you work hard you will achieve what you want even if you are not the most talented.” “This saying by Coach Barnes is one that really stuck with me since he passed away and is one that I feel like I embody very well. I find it humorous that after so long, my habit of hard work was what became my talent and pushed me to the top.” “One thing I remember Coach Barnes teaching me is the importance of hard work. I did not realize then, but his quote would apply not only to running, but life also.” Ethan Meunier will attend Notre Dame in the fall where he plans to major in biology/pre-med and Taylor Gries will attend the University of Southern Indiana with plans to major in nursing. On July 20, 2019, the first annual Coach Dylan Barnes

Taylor Gries

Run was established. Thanks in part to the Gatorade Pay It Forward Grant and Matthew Schadler, recipient of the grant, the idea of the memori-al run was created as a way to promote the sport of running with portion of the proceeds from the run going toward the Special Olympics track and field program as well as an endowment for a scholarship in Dylan Barnes’ name. A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to both a male and female graduating senior who participated in either cross country and/or track and field during their high school years at Memorial. The run was a fun event with more than 230 participants. Thanks to proceeds from registration and donations from generous sponsors, over $12,000 was raised. From the money raised, a donation

was made to Special Olym-pics, two scholarships were awarded, and money placed in an endowment fund with hopes of the scholar-ship eventually becoming self-sustaining and one that can be given each year. The second annual Coach Barnes Memorial Run was scheduled for July 18, 2020, but due to the current global pandemic, the run was cancelled with plans to reschedule at a later date. Anyone interested in still contributing to the schol-arship fund can contact Memorial business office.

IT WAS A BUSY YEAR FOR OUR PTO! By Kari Syroney

WELCOME BACK!Our PTO provided our staff with a special Chick-fil-A breakfast to

kick the school year off. The Chick-fil-A cow was on hand to welcome our students to school. Every parent who attended our PTO meetings received a coupon for their child to receive a FREE Chick-fil-A sandwich during lunch.   Thank you to Chick-fil-A for spon-soring our PTO!

STAFF AND STUDENT APPRECIATIONWe made sure to celebrate our staff and students in a special way each quarter! The PTO pro-vided freshly popped pop-corn to our staff and students. Special bags were marked so students and staff could win gift cards. The PTO handed out mints and prayers cards to our students for “GOOD LUCK” on the first day of final exams in December. The PTO treated our students and staff to hot chocolate on Valentine’s Day. The PTO provided refreshments at our monthly teacher staff meet-ings and throughout the year. We honored them during Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week in May from a distance. Staff was treated to lunch at McAlister’s Deli and each received

a Donut Bank gift card in the mail. Memorial parents donated more than $1,000 in gift cards which were given out to our staff throughout the week by random drawings.

NORTH POLE ELF TRAINING

The Memorial PTO hosted our inau-gural community event, The Official North Pole Elf Training, on Dec. 14, 2019. The event brought more than 100 children, ages 4 to 11 years old, representing each of partner schools. This event gave our young, future Ti-gers an opportunity to visit our school, interact with our amazing students, and learn what a great community we have. Thanks to an incredible response from our partner school families, the event sold out in less than two weeks! Thank you to everyone who helped make the PTO’s inaugural Official North Pole Elf Training a huge suc-cess! We couldn’t have made this event happen without the amazing com-mittee and the 44 Memorial students who gave their time to lead our future Tigers through Elf Training.

SHEPHERD ON THE SEARCHAs the shepherds searched for the new-born King, they made quite a few stops during Advent — including RMHS! Our very own Memorial Shepherd, SHEP, was searching our school for the baby Jesus. Our staff and students helped us to track our Shepherd’s loca-tion each day by submitting a “Search Ballot” for a chance to win prizes.

PTO TRIVIA NIGHT Thank you to everyone who sup-ported the third annual PTO Trivia

Night in February 2020! We hosted 17 teams (125 participants) at the Wood-ward Hospitality Room at St. Benedict’s Cathedral. A great time was had by all. Participants put together a team of up to eight to answer 100 questions, divided into 10 rounds. Each ques-tion was worth one point. Members had an evening of fun, snacks, games, prizes, cash bar, and silent auction items. Proceeds from the event were used to establish and award an annual scholarship for a graduating senior.

PTO SCHOLARSHIPSince the spirit of the Memorial PTO is one of volunteerism, we wanted to first and foremost honor a student who truly embraces and demon-strates that spirit. This year’s winner served the community well as a Teen Power staff member and a member of the Teen Advisory Council. Her active involvement at Memorial has shined through their leadership roles as an executive member for Riley Dance Marathon, president and founder of Grand Friends, co-president of Teen Power Club, and secretary of Snowflake. The inaugural PTO Scholarship was awarded to 2020 graduate Abby Regacho. Abby is attending Purdue University.

Congratulations to our winning team, The Cutting Edge.

Reitz Memorial High School was founded on the mission to educate all students to their highest potential by develop-ing religious values, providing excellence in education, and

fostering a commitment to service. We are doing everything in our power to make sure our students continue to receive the high-quali-ty education we have provided for the past 95 years. While we navigate the school year and new precautions required to keep our building sanitized and safe, we are asking for your support. With fundraising events cancelled, increased need for tuition assistance, and many other factors, a contribution to the Memorial Annual Campaign will have an immediate and direct benefit to each student, staff, and faculty member. Our goal for the 2021 campaign is $350,000 — we hope you will consider paying forward the blessing of an education from Memorial by donating today!
