Rwanda to Northern Ireland, Zimbabwe to Bosnia answers are demanded, reconciliation hard

to hear and the truth reluctant to be told.

DebbieTucker Green’s previous credits include Random at the Royal Court, Theatre Local and tour and Stoning Mary. Her other plays include Generations at the Young Vic, trade for the

RSC and Dirty Butterfly at Soho. She won the 2004 Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer for born bad at Hampstead Theatre. On film, she wrote and directed the short

film, heat and she has written and directed a film of Random for Channel 4.

Truth and Reconciliation will be moving to Theatre Local, sponsored by Bloomberg. Details to be announced.

October Gallery OWUSU-ANKOMAH MICROCRON-KUSUM

October Gallery will exhibit a body of new works by the renowned artist Owusu-Ankomah. Born in Sekondi, Ghana, in 1956, Owusu-Ankomah pursued studies in Fine Arts at Ghanatta

College in Accra before moving to Bremen, Germany where he now lives and works. His charged paintings on canvas depict an alternate world wherein monumental human figures –

his core motif – are shown moving within an ocean of signs that surround, support and, in fact, define them. The way in which these figures coexist and interact with various symbolic

sets has developed through distinct phases over time, reflecting Owusu-Ankomah’s own journey of spiritual discovery.

NAHINI FOUNBIA AND LES ESPOIRS DU MALI

Born in Ivory Coast, Nahini Doumbia started playing djembe and percussion at the age of ten,

under the guidance of djembefola Aboubacar Bamba. Nahini fled the Ivory Coast in 2002 during the civil war to settle in Mali, his father’s homeland. His first Malian project was to raise AIDS awareness in schools through music and theatre. In 2003 he embarked on a 2

month-long tour of Taiwan with Sabary, a dance and percussion company from Ivory Coast, featuring in several music festivals around the country.

In 2007 Nahini founded his first group, ‘Les Espoirs du Mali’. The group soon became one of the most popular percussion groups in the Bamako District. Over the past few years Nahini has led numerous percussion workshops in Bamako, France and in the UK where he now

lives.

He is making his mark on the London multi-cultural scene and beyond, performing with musicians from France, Ethiopia, Algeria and South Africa

The main part of minerals used to produce cell phones are coming from the mines in the

Eastern DR Congo. The Western World is buying these so-called conflict minerals, financing a civil war that, according to human rights organisations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II: During the last 15 years the conflict has cost the lives of more than 5 million

people and 300.000 women have been raped. The war will continue as long as armed groups can finance their warfare by selling minerals.

Blood in Mobile is a film about our responsibility for the conflict in the Congo and about

corporate social responsibility.

Charles Meek’s memoir of colonial Tanganyika, with his son and editor Innes Meek. Arriving

in the former German colony during the dark days of World War II, Meek describes the challenges of living in a remote colony in war-time and of life among a remarkable cast of

frontier characters and colleagues.

In Dar es Salaam Meek was embroiled in the fast-moving events leading to decolonization, working as Permanent Secretary to the Chief Minister, Julius Nyerere. Following

independence, he became the first Head of the Tanganyika Civil Service, a in which role he collaborated closely with Nyerere.

Dr. Tafida has recently returned to London from Nigeria where, in his capacity as Director-General of the Jonathan / Sambo election campaign, he successfully managed President

Alex Perry will discuss his new book, which documents two years on the trail of a campaign to eradicate malaria. The disease still infects around half a billion people a year, and kills close to a million of them. Drawing on the history of efforts to combat malaria, Alex Perry will explore

the complex politics of eradication projects, development and aid in Africa.

He will argue that whilst there have been successes in the fight against malaria, considerable challenges remain.

The SOAS School of Law hosts its first Annual Inception Lecture, delivered by a notable

alumnus or alumna of the SOAS School of Law, addressing a topical subject of general public interest relating to the role of law in society in a broad sense. The inception lecture is

intended to serve as an inspiration for our students, contribute to public debate and enhance our academic environment.

In this lecture, David Lammy will draw on the history of direct action and civil disobedience, from Gandhi’s non-violent resistance to British rule in India to the campaign against South

African apartheid. He will compare the student protests of 1968 and the Arab Spring with the protest movement currently taking root in university campuses and community groups across

the country. He will seek to answer the fundamental question of whether direct action is necessary for democracy to be born and renewed.

In World War 2 thousands of African-American troops were sent to fight for freedom and democracy on behalf of the USA which refused black people to right to vote. Initially the Armed Forces were reluctant to use black troops but due to the agitation of the US black

community and the increasing casualty rate segregated units like the 92nd Infantry, the 761 Black Panther Tank Battalion and the Tuskeegee airmen were sent into action.

The film follows the exploits of the 92nd infantry division and their activities in Italy when a small unit is trapped behind enemy lines and discovers a priceless artefact, a massive war

crime and a supernatural statue.

The film will be followed by a Q and A with a WW2 veteran

From the Arab North Africa, West Africa, Central and East Africa, through to Southern Africa, women have emerged from the double oppression of patriarchy and colonialism to become the unsung heroines of the moving image as producers, directors, actresses, script writers, financiers, promoters, marketers and distributors of film, television and video in postcolonial Africa

such contributions by women are underrepresented, both in industry debates and in academic research

There are now many cases in which African women in front of and behind the camera have overcome social barriers and yet this is sidelined.

students, practitioners, academics and researchers are invited to debate how women have contributed to film, television and video markets in Africa from pre-colonial, colonial to

postcolonial periods.

BEWARE 0F THE DRAGON: Africa should not look to China

We all We all know that the Chinese are the neo-colonialists of Africa. They’ve plundered the continent of its natural resources, tossing aside any concern for human rights and doing deals with some of the world’s most unsavoury regimes. The relentless pursuit of growth is China’s

only spur.

But is this picture really fair?

In Angola, for example, China’s low-interest loans have been tied to a scheme that has ensured that roads, schools and other infrastructure has been built. China has an impressive track record of lifting its own millions out of poverty and can do the same for Africa. And is the West’s record in Africa as glowing as we like to think? After decades of pouring aid into Africa, how much have we actually achieved in terms of reducing poverty, corruption and

war? So which way should Africa look for salvation – to the West, to China, or perhaps to its own people? Come to the debate and decide for yourself.

Gender, and sexuality will form the basis of the academic scholarship for this year’s conference. Women as creative writers and as characters in northern Nigeria and their

constraints as individuals within a religious and socially conservative society will be examined in relation to women’s issues in the literature and films of contemporary Northern Nigeria.
