Surplus This is the difference between assetsand liabilities. It is that part of the assets not needed

to pay the policies and other fixed obligations of the

Society. It indicates strength and dividend-payin- g

power. It is the fund from which policyholders receive

their dividends and can be disbursed in no other way.It is maintained solely fcr their protection and advant-

age, since the charter and policy contracts forbid partici-

pation in surplus by any other interests. During thelasi; ten years the Society has paid to policyholders a,

larger sum in dividends than any other company. -

An automatic block signal systemfor tho prevention of railway accl-dent- s

and collisions was tested yoster.day before a large party of railroadofficials and technical experts andwas found to be a successful and practlcal device, says the Pittsburg Press.

A locomotive equipped with the slg.nal apparatus drew a coach which theparty occupied. The same apparatusas was In the engine was reproducedin mlnature in the coach. Precededby a pilot locomotive the Irani wasoperated over five miles of the FortWayne railroad yeBterday afternoon, and it was successfully demonstratedthat a train equipped with the newsignal device will stop without; anyhuman agency being employed, whenanother train Is in the same block,or when It is necessary ihat the trainshould stop for a number of otherreasons. ,

The syMom Is called the Holtmanautomatic signal system and the pa-tent on It Is owned by the Internation-al Security Manufacturing Company, with offices at 347 Fifth avenue.

The train in which the workings ofthe system were demonstrated yester-day, left the Allegheny depot of iheFt. Wayne railroad at 2 o'clock In theafternoon, and was run to Jacks Runand back. The round trip was madethree times and those who witnessedthe test were given every opportunityto become thoroughly acquainted withthe device. The miniature system inthe coach reproduced all that trans-pired In' the cab of the engine. When-ever the train came into the sameblock In which the pilot locomotivewas, a whistle blew automatically, thethrottle was thrown back, and the airbrakes applied without any effort ofthe engineer.

The system Is so designated that itcan be connected up to and made. apart of any signal system now in useby the different railroads.

Last month the Pennsylvania rail-road thoroughly tested the new deviceand yesterdya many of the importantrailroads in the United States andCanada had representatives present towitness the demonstration of the sys-tem. A number of foreign delegatesto the International railway congresshave signified their intention to in-

spect the device in operation beforereturnng to their homes.

The results of the tests yesterdaydemonstrated that where tracks andengines were equipped with the Holt-ma- n

device alone, or in connectionwith systems already established, itis an impossibility to get tranis withina danger zone of any kind. The devicewill indicate the following dancers onthe track ahead:

A train on the block ahead; brokenrails; an open switch; a train hang
