The Lancaster-Lebanon League has been around since 1972, and in foot-ball, there have been three sections of competition since 1975.

That’s about to change. The upcoming 2019 season will be

the final one contested with three sec-tions — for now — because the league will go to four sections for the first time starting in 2020.

And yes, those league-mandated crossover games are back again this season, and they’ll continue moving forward in the next cycle.

This will be an end of an era, of sorts, for several longtime rivalries; next year, Garden Spot and Lampeter-Strasburg will depart Section Two, and Warwick will leave Section One. And Section Three as you know it will be broken in two for the new-look Sec-tion Four.

But that’s next year. How is this year going to shake down come late October?

All good things ...L-L’s final season before adding a 4th section has potential to produce classic races

LANCASTER-LEBANON LEAGUE 2019 SEASON OVERVIEW

All three section races have the po-tential to be classics. Heck, just last fall, Manheim Township, Warwick and Wilson shared the Section One cham-pionship, while Manheim Central, in Section Two, and Lancaster Catholic, in Section Three, went undefeated in league play and captured their respec-tive section titles outright.

That three-way tie last fall was the first of its kind in Section One since 2000.

The Section One race is shaping up to be another beauty; Manheim Town-ship, Warwick and Wilson are all set to return plenty of firepower, particu-larly the Blue Streaks, who will wel-come back 10 of their top 11 tacklers

on defense from last year, plus several key components from a high-powered offense, including Colgate commit QB Harrison Kirk.

Warwick, fresh of last year’s nine-win season and first District Three playoff win in program history, brings back 1,900-yard passer Joey Mc-Cracken, all-state receiver Trey Glass, and offensive tackle man-child Nolan Rucci — one of the most sought after recruits in the country — to spearhead the offense. And Wilson is, well, Wil-son. West Lawn is a football factory, and the Bulldogs are pretty much al-ways there at the finish line.

COVER STORY

JOHN [email protected]

Manheim Central senior quarter-back Evan Simon and Cocalico senior quarterback/safety Noah Palm sat mere feet from each other on a bench inside the Barons’ football locker room on a weekday evening in late June.

Their presence was requested for a photo shoot for the cover of LNP’s pre-season football guide. It’s in that lock-er room Simon was asked what makes Palm such an effective defensive back. Simon immediately referenced last year’s District Three Class 5A champi-onship game.

“Do you remember that one play?” Simon said as he locked eyes with Palm.

Smirks formed on both faces.“I threw a nice corner route to the

end zone,” Simon said. “And out of no-where (Palm) swats it. He’s just a freak. He’s a really athletic kid.”

Manheim Central went on to beat Cocalico in that district title game, continuing a storied rivalry that stretches back decades between two of the most consistently strong programs in the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

It’s a rivalry that’s only intensified in recent years, considering Manheim Central and Cocalico have finished as No. 1 and No. 2 in the L-L Section Two standings in each of the last three years and five of the last seven. The Barons and Eagles have also met deep in the district playoffs in each of the last three years and four of the last six.

books of that rivalry the last few sea-sons have been Palm and Simon, both starting QBs for their respective pro-grams since the start of 2017.

And both have been highly success-ful.

Manheim Central is 27-2 with Simon as starting QB in the Barons’ multiple/spread offense, claiming back-to-back section and district crowns.

Cocalico is 19-5 with Palm under center in the flexbone attack, the Ea-

gles twice being the L-L Section Two runner-up to the Barons and falling to Manheim Central in the district semi-finals in 2017 and the district final in 2018.

Showing poise

Palm also started and made 100-plus tackles as a freshman in Cocalico’s defensive backfield in 2016, the same year the Eagles last beat the Barons, a 28-24 regular season victory in which

(Evan Simon) has all the tools to make every throw. The short throw, the intermediate throw, the deep

throw, throw on the run. ... He’s a nightmare. — Dave Gingrich, Cocalico football coach

The Cedar Crest Falcons beat the people they “should have” last season. They lost to the power sides on their schedule. It added up to 5-5, 2-4 and non-contention in tough Section One of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. The results were decisive both ways; Crest’s five wins were by a combined 204-75 and the five losses by 196-76.

But there’s enough experi-ence returning, especially among the big guys around the line of scrimmage, to jus-tify optimism in South Leba-non.

Coach Rob Wildasin came to L-L Media Day on Aug. 9 prepared to field at least one question: What will you do without Logan Horn? The four-year quarterback is now at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

“We plan to keep playing football,” Wildasin said. “I tried to get the administra-tion to cancel the season, but they wouldn’t go for it.”

Pretty sure he was kidding.

About the offense

“We always build our of-fense around our person-nel,” Wildasin said. “I don’t think there’s a lot of mystery (about what that will en-tail).”

Meaning: Senior Tyler Cruz (658 yards, 13 TDs), who is getting Pennsylvania Conference and FCS college looks, is very good. He has a

backup, sophomore Aadyn Richards, who is on Penn State’s radar after camping there this summer.

Four starters, and four se-niors, return on the offensive line, led by veterans Andrew Foltz and T.J. Moore.

“We’re going to try to run the football,” Wildasin said.

That still involves serious quarterbacking, especially in a zone-option system. Horn’s replacement figures to be Chris Danz, son of former Falcons QB Chris Danz and grandson of Falcons coach-ing legend Norbie Danz.

Danz participated in the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana this summer. He also sustained an ankle injury this summer.

Wildasin mentioned two other QBs, juniors Dalton Reinhart and Tyrese Stewart,

but dismissed Danz’s injury with, “We’ll be ready to go.”

About the defense

The D allowed 298 yards per game last year, second-best in the section. It played a lead role in what was nearly last season’s signature Fri-day night, a 16-10 near-miss against Section One tri-cham-pion Manheim Township.

Similar results seem pos-sible this time. Many of the above-mentioned O-linemen stock the defen-sive front. There’s also a high-level end in senior Eric Wawrzyniak. Senior Cole Miller, who’ll be Danz’s top receiving target on offense, should be one of the L-L’s best safeties.

There’s also a budding

OverviewHempfield was a playoff team last

fall, and Cedar Crest is just a year re-moved from a postseason trip, so ex-pect the Black Knights and Falcons to push. Meanwhile, Penn Manor and McCaskey, under first-year coach Sam London, hope to keep chipping away at the lead pack.

Can Manheim Central — fresh off a stinging loss to Penn Hills in the PIAA Class 5A state final last December — make it five Section Two champion-ships in a row? And can the Barons do one better, and make it three District

Three Class 5A crowns in a row? QB Evan Simon, a Rutgers pledge, is back to lead the offense, as Manheim Cen-tral tries to fend off uber rival Cocali-co, with all-state picks Noah Palm and Brock Gingrich back in tow, in the sec-tion and district races.

The usual suspects — Elizabeth-town, Solanco, Conestoga Valley — will no doubt chase. Garden Spot, un-der Matt Zamperini, who is back for his second stint as coach in New Hol-land, is looking to bounce back after a winless campaign last year. And L-S has the weaponry, and the motivation of jumping sections next year, to make a major push.

Lancaster Catholic went 9-0 in

league play and ran away with the Sec-tion Three banner last fall, as Elco and Annville-Cleona finished two games behind the rampaging Crusaders, who went 10-0 overall before bowing out in the District Three Class 3A semifi-nals. So there should be plenty of mo-tivation in Lancaster Catholic’s camp moving forward.

Elco and A-C both return several key cogs from last year’s run, when the Raiders and Little Dutchmen both went playoff dancing. Mean-while, Ephrata and Lebanon both had successful Section Three debuts, with each earning five victories and plenty of respect from their new playmates.

Donegal was a six-win team a year ago, but must replace its entire start-ing backfield. Columbia will return all 22 starters from last fall, when the Crimson Tide went from 0-10 to 3-7 and knocking on the postseason door. And Octorara opens Year Two in the L-L League, and the Braves are now acclimated to their new digs.

Meanwhile, Northern Lebanon and Pequea Valley, under first-year skip-per Jeff Werner, are poised for snap-back seasons after falling back in the pack a year ago.

L-L League football 2019 is teed up and ready to go. Enjoy this one last three-section look, because every-thing changes one year from now.

Cover story: Simon, Palm raring to get back on f ieldPalm stepped in for one clutch play at QB when starter Brady Sawyer had to leave after getting his helmet knocked off.

“It was a third-and-9,” longtime Co-calico coach Dave Gingrich recalled. “Noah threw a 30-yard completion. That was cold off the bench. ...We end-ed up scoring on that drive.”

And because we’re on the topic of a young gun showing poise in his var-sity snaps at QB, Simon admitted the most nervous he’s ever been before a game came in his first career start as a sophomore in Week One of 2017, on the road at Warwick.

Simon calmed the nerves by con-necting with his older brother, Tyler, for a pair of TD tosses to help Man-heim Central go up 35-0 by halftime. Those proved vital as Warwick came charging back but fell short in an eventual 35-27 Barons victory.

Next level

Both Simon and Palm were all-state selections in 2018. And both are head-ed to Division I programs after high school.

The 6-foot, 3-inch, 205-pound Si-mon is committed to Rutgers as a QB, a position where he has shown he can just about do it all, throwing for 2,701 yards and 28 TDs while rushing for

662 yards and 12 TDs in 15 games last season, the Barons’ lone loss coming in the state final.

Simon will en-ter 2019 with 5,350 career passing yards — closing in on Jeff Smoker’s program record of 5,900. Simon’s 59 TD passes are already the most in Central his-tory.

“(Simon) has all the tools to make every throw,” Gingrich said. “The short throw, the intermediate throw, the deep throw, throw on the run. ... He’s a nightmare.”

The 6-foot, 200-pound Palm is committed to New Hampshire, where he’ll compete at defensive back and perhaps even bulk up to become a linebacker. His career defensive num-

bers as a safety entering 2019 are 233 tack-les, five inter-ceptions, three caused fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

He also has 2,500 career rushing yards, 1,366 career passing yards and 43 total ca-reer TDs as a QB.

“(Palm) is a tough kid,” fifth-year Manheim

Central head coach Dave Hahn said. “I know everybody likes him at quar-terback. I like him even more at safe-ty. I liked him as a freshman.”

Palm’s defensive numbers might be higher had he not been restricted to mostly playing QB as a sophomore in 2017.

The Eagles didn’t have a suitable backup at the time, and didn’t want to

risk Palm getting hurt on defense.“It’s fun to get out there and hit

some kids,” Palm said.Has he ever put a good stick on Si-

mon?“There was one play,” Simon re-

called of last year’s district title game. “I escaped out of the pocket, ran 10 yards and got out of bounds. A report-er on the sidelines was like, ‘Noah al-most took your head off.’ ”

One last dance

Manheim Central and Cocalico might battle for L-L Section Two su-premacy again this fall, though each team returns just one starting O-line-man and must fill in several spots on both sides of the ball.

The Eagles will try to snap a five-game losing streak to the Barons when they visit Manheim Central on Sept. 27. Perhaps the two teams will meet again in the district playoffs for what would be the fourth consecutive year.

Regardless, it’ll put a bow on what has been an impressive back-and-forth between Simon and Palm that will not soon be forgotten in the long-standing tussle between Section Two foes.

“It’s definitely the biggest rivalry around, I’d say,” Simon said.

Quickly scan the 2019 Hempfield football roster and you’ll notice more than a few familiar names missing.

The Black Knights must re-place linemen on both sides of the ball, including Section One Offensive Lineman of the Year Riley Good. There’s also the loss of offensive weap-ons in standout wide receiver Darien Ressler and all-star running back Matt Heuston to consider, but the confidence isn’t lacking in Landisville.

“I think we’ll be pretty ex-plosive,” senior Jackson Shand said.

“A lot of people are down on us right now because we lost a lot of key players — I’ve been seeing that’s kind of the focus (on Hempfield),” the wide receiver and linebacker con-tinued with a laugh. “We did lose some great players, but I think we have a group of guys

that are really going to step up here and hopefully do some-thing great.”

About the offense

Shand will step up at receiv-er, where he’ll be joined by Sam Hess and tight end Max Hostetter, who returns after dealing with injuries last sea-son. Luke Miller, last year’s third-leading rusher (136 yards), slides into the starting role.

The biggest key to the of-fense will be quarterback Colin Peters. In his first year under center, the then-junior threw for 1,455 yards and 11 touchdowns. Rushing for 408

yards and four touchdowns made him the team’s second-biggest threat on the ground — and now he has a year of ex-perience.

“We get a lot of new starters, but I don’t think we’ll struggle on offense at all,” Peters said. “I think we’ll make up for the people we lost.”

About the defense

Overall, Hempfield’s de-fense played well in 2018, but struggled against the passing game, allowing a league-worst 2,243 yards through the air. It’s been a focus through the early workouts, especially

Final word

The schedule isn’t easy, including trips to York, Warwick and Man-heim Township. The Falcons have won seven straight season-opening Cedar Bowls with neighboring rival Lebanon, but the Cedars appear to be bringing more weapons to the fight this time.

Big picture, this season looks a lot like last season. The Falcons sit around the middle of a tough Sec-tion One pack, probably an upset away from the postseason. They might have a physical and experi-enced enough group to pull it off.

“I don’t worry about what I can’t control,” Wildasin said. “Every-thing I can control, we can control, I think we do well.”

Hempf ield: Knights liking chemistrywith a new group of defensive backs.

The answer, according to Shand, however, might come from the guys up front.

“We’ve been working on (defending against the pass) a lot, so we’re just hoping it’s different this year — es-pecially with our pass rush,” he said. “I think our pass rush is going to be pretty good this year, so I think a lot of pressure is going to make it easier for our corners.”

Intangibles

“The chemistry is huge this year,” Peters said. “We’re closer than I think I’ve ever been on any other team, so I think we’re going to play really good together, be really fast.”

Final word

“We’re going to be underdogs, so we’re going to use that to our advan-tage,” Peters said. “We like that — we don’t like big targets — so I think we’ll be fine.”

Two years ago, Manheim Township’s group of sophomores mostly stood on the sidelines every Friday night. They watched their older teammates play together in the Blue Streaks’ historic 2017 run to the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section One crown, District Three Class 6A championship and the PIAA Class 6A semifinals.

Those sophomores then became ju-niors and first-time starters in 2018, tasked with upholding the precedent set the year before.

Streaks coming into their ownSenior class keeps Manheim Township’s great expectations alive

“From my class especially we knew we were going to have a lot of pressure on our backs,” senior lineman Justin Herr said. “But we were used to it. We were always the underdogs. Nobody thought we’d do well in a game. We al-ways proved people wrong.”

The Streaks last fall proceeded to

finish as the league’s co-Section One champs with Wilson and Warwick be-fore reaching the district semifinals.

Now, 18 starters return in 2019. So, too, do mighty expectations.

About the offense

The only question mark for this team is on the offensive line, where two new starters are needed alongside returners Herr, Grayson Kuhns and Victor Nunez.

“We’re very speedy,” Herr said of the O-line. “And we’ll do well because of our speed and our tactics.”

The skill position spots are filled by returners in the Streaks’ spread attack: senior quarterback Harrison Kirk (161 of 264, 2,300 yards, 19 touchdowns),

Welcome to Tornado Alley, Sam London.

The Coatesville grad and former Lincoln University and Cheyney Uni-versity assistant coach and recruit-ing coordinator took over the reins to McCaskey’s football program back in February. He is the Red Tornado’s fourth coach in the last 10 years.

London is an Air Force veteran, and he earned medals for his service in Iraq, so he’s a stickler, a no-nonsense kind of guy. His goal: Rally the troops, preach accountability and strong fun-damentals, and get McCaskey back on track — one year after a 0-6 ride through Section One.

So how is Camp London going?“It’s been great,” senior playmaker

Isaiah Thomas said. “Everybody is working hard and

he’s kept it fun. He’s already teaching us a lot of new things, so we’re anx-ious for the season and to see what we can do.”

Section One is always more fun when McCaskey is in the hunt. Can London get the Tornado back up the leaderboard? That’s his wish. Now it’s up to his troops.

Closing the gapAthletes are there for Red Tornado, it’s just a matter of putting them to work

About the offense

London installed a Zone scheme, and said his squad will run multiple looks, leaning on their athleticism and some returning beef up front to move the ball.

2019 ROSTER

HEAD COACHJohn Brubaker(5th season, 6-34)

ANDREW [email protected]

Following a winless 2015 season, Penn Manor had no-where to go but up.

The Comets won twice in 2016, then three times the next season. It may not have been a meteoric rise, but a foundation had seemingly been laid.

Then 2018 happened — a 1-9 campaign with a mostly junior-sophomore mix that yielded too many points — 41 a game — and produced not enough offense.

But now, more than just eternal hope springs, because the Comets are older, wiser and far more experienced, with eight starters returning on both sides of the ball.

“In (Lancaster-Lebanon League) Section One, your chances are diminished when you’re counting on that many sophomores,” said coach John Brubaker, now in his fifth sea-son. “The good thing is that all those guys are back, and that experience will help us.”

Just how much is the big question.

“We need to see some suc-cess on the scoreboard, with-out a doubt,” Brubaker said. “But we’re really not focusing on that as a team. If we get our preparation, effort and execu-tion real good, our results are going to be good.”

Critical to a push to good-ness will be the play of junior quarterback Luke Braas, who secured the position over the last three games of 2018.

“It’s a challenge I’m looking

Comets look to turn cornerWith more experience gained, Penn Manor has postseason goals

forward to,” Braas said. “I like the guys we have around me. We got some new coaches and they’re good. We have a good staff. I like the transition.”

About the offense

Braas, who completed 41 of 101 passes for 770 yards last season, will direct the spread pistol with seven other re-turning starters, including senior Aaron Gale at receiv-er, senior running back Josh Gibson and junior RB Isaiah Stoltzfus, juniors Ben Weaver, Austin Miller, Max Jesberger

and senior converted running back Nick Baker up front.

Stoltzfus and Gibson led the ground game in 2018 with 241 and 226 yards, respectively. The running game as a whole netted a tick less than 87 yards a game.

“The offensive line is the driving force,” Gibson offered as a key to more production.

Comets

Streaks McCaskeysenior running back Jaden Floyd (154 attempts, 729 rushing yards, four TDs) and wide receivers Brett Benjamin (37 receptions, 595 yards, four TDs), Mickey Stokes (19 recep-tions, 281 yards, five TDs), Anthony Ivey (17 receptions, 265 yards, one TD) and Jon Engel (11 receptions, 103 yards, one TD) and tight end Ben Mann (seven receptions, 107 yards, two TDs).

Kirk, Floyd, Benjamin, Mann and Herr earned L-L all-star or honorable mention nods in 2018. And Kirk (Col-gate University), Mann (Yale Univer-sity) and Engel (Lafayette) are already committed to collegiate programs.

About the defense

Ten starters are back for a 3-4 de-fense that held opponents to 225 yards a game last year. Up front is Mann (54 tackles, eight tackles for loss, five sacks) and Kuhns (44 tack-les, eight tackles for loss, three sacks) at end and Herr (43 tackles, six tack-les for loss, three sacks) at nose guard.

Twins and 2018 L-L Section One all-stars Josh Emge (80 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks) and Sam Emge (89 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, five sacks) lead a linebacker unit that also features returning L-L Section

The biggest question mark here: Thomas was a 1,000-yard passer at QB last fall, but he might be on the move to wideout. That would likely leave the snap-calling duties to Ben Desmarais, who threw for 200 yards and a couple of scores last season.

“Quarterback, receiver, doesn’t really matter,” Thomas said. “Wherever the coaches need me to go, I’ll play. We’ve been pretty strong on the line, and we have a lot of skill kids back.”

Two of those linemen are key cogs Thyago Alvarez, who will anchor the O-line at guard, and Destry Gravely, a real run-stuffer from his D-tackle spot.

As for the skill kids, backs Donovan Trowery and Da’Aviance Rodriguez are burners, and wideouts Jovan Rodriguez, Da-Vion Scarborough and Jah’ciere Wil-liams will be targets for whoever is QB.

About the defense

London is going with a 4-3 look on this side of the ball, and the Tornado will have several holes to plug; the only full-timer due back is Gravely.

Some names to know should include Ethan Lane and Gabriel Mundale at D-end, linebackers Andre Aleong, Yamere Nixon and Desmarais, and secondary playmakers Rodriguez, Alex Cooper, Jayon Burnside, Kenny Jaccinor, Wil-

leading tacklers Gibson, a defensive back, and linebacker Stoltzfus.

The same upfront force counted on to help the Comets move the ball will be counted on to stuff opposing rush-ers. Senior Logan Legenstein and ju-nior Isaac Hostetter join Baker and Gale in a deep secondary.

Intangibles

Brubaker speaks enthusiastically about the extensive buy-in from all major parties.

“We’ve got buy-in from the kids,

Continued from 12

buy-in from the parents, and buy-in from the community and the school district,” he said.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve been around the Millersville area and everybody wants to know how the football team’s going to be. This sum-mer, I’ve heard that more than ever. Get those three heads to come togeth-er right there and you’ve got a formula for success.”

Key to the season

This key to the season is brought to you by, without hesitation, Braas, Gib-son and Gale, all skill position players. But probably as important, they say, is keeping fresh. A roster deep with ex-

perienced players should make that possible.

Last word

“I don’t know how many wins

that’s going to take,” Brubaker said of his team’s lofty goal of making the district playoffs, “but our guys want to play more than 10 games. I like it that their aspirations are high.”

Continued from 11Continued from 10

One honorable mention Kurtz (65 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack) alongside seniors Dante Wilson (28 tackles) and Bryce Casey (31 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks).

The veteran defensive backfield is made up of safety Engel (85 tackles, three interceptions, two fumble re-coveries) and senior corners Benja-min (36 tackles, three interceptions, eight pass break-ups) and Matt Mi-kulka (37 tackles, eight intercep-tions, one caused fumble, one forced fumble).

Special teams

The Streaks will need to find a new kicker and punter, but the return game should be strong with Benja-min (358 return yards) and Ivey (302 return yards).

liams and Thomas.

Intangibles

Sam Hershey returns to handle the kicking duties, and he’s got a thunder leg. That’ll help with field position. The athletes are there. Now it’s about getting everyone on the same page.

“For us, it’ll be all about hard work,” Thomas said. “No days off. And (Lon-don) is making everyone accountable for their actions. Now we just have to put the work in every day. Be a team. Listen. And take it one step at a time.”

Key to the season

The coaching turnover within the program has been startling over the last decade, so some stability would be nice. That means soaking in every last thing that comes out of London’s mouth, and applying it on the field. Keep it simple.

“They want to compete, and they want to do whatever it takes to be successful, and that’s music to my ears,” London said. “At the end of the day, I’m proud of these kids already.”

Final word

“If we work hard every day, we’re going to shock people,” London said. “Things are changing. We’re going to close this gap. We have a lot of talent, and now it’s just a matter of putting the guys in the right places.”

A three-year renaissance for War-wick’s football program yielded eight wins and a playoff berth in 2016, a competitive season marred by a start-ing quarterback injury in 2017, and last year’s campaign, which saw the Warriors reel in the program’s first district playoff victory and a share of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Sec-tion One title.

Warriors keep growingHope solid foundation leads to continuing success

With a solid foundation returning, the Warriors want more.

“We have expectations now,” senior Trey Glass said, “but last season was last season. This year, we’ve got to dig a new path and get farther than we ever have.”

That path begins with a season opener scheduled for Aug. 23 at home against Ephrata.

About the offense

Glass, Section One’s Receiver of the Year last year (72 catches, 1,331 yards, 15 touchdowns) and an all-state selec-tion, leads a corps of returning wide-outs that includes Justin Gerhart, Conor Adams and Caleb Schmitz. Thatcher Miller looks to fill the void left by Hayden Rucci, an all-state tight end, while a trio of running backs — Sean Badessa, Colton Miller and Aus-tin Bufis — vie for carries and yardage from the backfield.

Earning a share of the Sec-tion One championship and reaching the District Three Class 6A quarterfinals doesn’t sound like such a bad thing, right?

But after Wilson tied Man-heim Township and Warwick for section gold before bow-ing out to eventual champ Harrisburg in the second round of the district playoffs last November, the Bulldogs exited the 2018 season with kind of an empty feeling in-side.

Injuries ravaged Wilson’s locker room — 2017 Section One Linebacker of the Year Nick Johnson broke his ankle in Week One and missed the season, and rugged RB-LB Avanti Lockhart missed five games with nagging ailments — and the Bulldogs never re-ally got up to their usual cruis-ing altitude.

That should serve as plen-ty of motivation this time around, as Wilson begins its 75th season of varsity foot-ball. As well as this: Manheim Township, with returning weapons all over the place — including 10 top tacklers due back on defense — and a deep Warwick squad that beat the Bulldogs last year, are loaded for bear.

“We’re the underdogs,” Wil-son coach Doug Dahms said. “There’s no doubt about that.”

Can Wilson win the sec-

tion crown outright? Can the Bulldogs make a deeper post-season run? And, most im-portantly, can Dahms’ troops stay healthy? Those are the million-dollar questions in West Lawn.

About the offense

Priority No. 1 for Dahms is finding a new quarterback, and the Bulldogs went into camp with Kaleb Brown, Ryan Moseman and Nick Williams

on the preseason depth chart.Whoever wins the job will

benefit from the return of studs Adam Vanino at center and guards Nate Keller and Anthony Koper taking care of business up front.

The receiving corps is spear-headed by the very capable hands of vets Troy Corson, Matt Fry and Brady Gibble, and backs Lockhart, A.J. Futrick and Mason Lenart all got touches last year.

What will Cocalico do for an encore? One year after starting 10 new full-

timers on defense and then going all the way to the District Three Class 5A championship game, the Eagles are set to return a solid nucleus of vet performers, including all-state inte-rior lineman stud Brock Gingrich, and do-it-all two-way dual-threat QB-DB Noah Palm, who is back for his fourth season as a varsity starter on defense and third on offense.

But the one number that leaps off the Eagles’ preseason page is this one: Eight.

Coach Dave Gingrich has just eight seniors on his roster, and just six of those guys played full-time last year.

“Next man up,” Brock Gingrich said. “That’s where we’re at. And that’s what we’ll do.”

Will it be enough to give Manheim Central a run for its money in the Sec-tion Two chase, and to get another stab at the Barons in the district champion-ship? Time will tell. But Cocalico won’t lower its bar over a lack of seniors.

About the offense

Palm returns for his third season at

‘Next man up’ for EaglesWith just 8 seniors returning, Cocalico still planning

to be very much in the Section Two title chase

the wheel of Cocalico’s punishing Veer attack. He was a 1,300-yard rusher with 28 TD keepers last fall, and he’s thrown just two interceptions in his varsity ca-reer. Needless to say, he’s special.

Palm will benefit from the return of speed-back Ronald Zahm, and FB Cody Shay, who steps in for all-star Garrett Longenecker, had plenty of touches last fall, so Cocalico’s back-field is in great shape.

The question mark is up front, where Gingrich, at left guard, is the only re-turning starter. Austin Sauder has seen time as a backup at right guard. Newbies include tackles Ryan Bru-baker, Evan Haldeman, Jared White and Ben Bearinger, and center Jared Stauffer. That group must get on the same page quickly to keep Palm pro-tected and the offense chugging.

“We lost our center, right guard and both tackles, so that’s a concern,” Dave Gingrich said. “We have a lot of work to do there. We’re anxious to see what this new group can do.”

But make no mistake about it: Hav-ing Palm back to direct traffic is a fan-tastic start.

“He’s everything you want in a quar-terback,” Brock Gingrich said. “He’s a great player. He does it all.”

About the defense

Gingrich is a major run-stuffer up front, and Palm was an all-state pick at safety last year, after registering 100 tackles. He’s a stick machine, and was recruited by New Hampshire to play DB in college.

Five starters in all are due back on defense, with end Shawn Fester, Shay at inside ’backer and Zahm at safety flanking Gingrich and Palm. Basket-

ball standout Trey Griffin, one of the new seniors, is out for football for the first time, and he’s expected to con-tribute at end.

Bulldogs

Warriors

Wilson must plug in a few spots up front, and also find a tight end — to go along with a new QB. Other than that, the beef and the skill kids are here.

About the defense

The defense never rests in West Lawn, and there are plenty of top-shelf defenders due back, includ-ing Lockhart and Nate Hoekstra at linebacker, Jeff Colacin off the edge, and a talented secondary fea-turing safeties Corson and Fry, plus Brown at cover corner.

Defense has always been Wilson’s bread and butter, and that group should be ahead of the curve at the outset.

Intangibles

Jack Wagner returns to handle the kicking chores, and he’s a good one. Wilson also features one of the best return men in Section One in Corson, who is a threat to take it to the house in special teams.

Key to the season

Keeping everyone out of the trainer’s room as much as humanly possible.

Injuries gutted Wilson’s depth last season, and the Bulldogs can’t afford a repeat. Breaking in a new QB and plugging some holes, obvi-ously, are also important.

“But,” Dahms said bluntly, “first and foremost we absolutely have to stay healthy.”

Final word

“I expect there to be plenty of mo-tivation, after the season we had last year,” Dahms said. “We were so beat up and couldn’t stay healthy. So the motivation will be to stay healthy, try and win the section out-right, get back to the district finals, and win it.”

Joey McCracken returns at quarter-back, where he completed 92 of 158 passes for 1,970 yards and 27 touch-downs to three interceptions last year.

“I think he’s improved significant-ly from last year to this year,” head coach Bob Locker said of McCracken, a junior. “I think the game has slowed down even more for him. His reads are better. His arm’s stronger. He’s got a year’s worth of experience.”

About the defense

to graduation, but Nolan Rucci and Hunter Deibler (defensive end), and Caleb Goss (nose guard), saw signifi-cant playing time last year.

Warwick also brings back all three starting linebackers in Jonathan Forbes, David Hnasko and Bufis, as well as Gerhart at defensive back and Adams and Glass at safety.

Intangibles

Warwick’s 10 turnovers last year were the fewest in Section One, and its plus-14 turnover margin matched Manheim Township’s atop the section. It helped the team’s prolific offense maintain a flow and kept pressure on opposing defenses.

Glass was knocked out of last year’s District Three quarterfinal loss to Ce-dar Cliff with a knee injury that side-lined him for most of the offseason,

but he said he was fully recovered by the start of camp.

Key to the season

“If we’re going to be a really good football team this year,” Locker said, “then I think the difference for us is going to have to be learning how to win games against quality opponents in lower-scoring scenarios.”

The average score of Warwick’s three losses last year was 29.3-21.

Final word

“We have a lot of momentum behind us,” McCracken said, “and we have bigger goals, higher expectations, and it really just pushes us. We don’t really want to look back to last year. We want to build something new, and then build upon that.”

Cocalico: It’s next man up for Eagles

Intangibles

Speed kills, and Cocalico should be in good shape in that department with Palm and Zahm making plays out of the backfield. Carson Nash and Steven Flinton should also be speedy play-makers on the flanks, at wideout and in the secondary.

Key to the season

Getting the new trench guys up to snuff, and fast, because Cocalico’s Veer is an intricate attack, and everyone needs to be firing.

“We’ll have to rely on our athletes and returning players until every-one else gets up to speed,” Dave Gin-grich said. “But everybody in that locker room expects to win. And

we’ll find a way to get better and get those wins.”

Final word

“We’ll never lower the bar; we have to keep raising it up,” Brock Gingrich said. “We’ll have a lot of youngsters playing, but that’s just how it is. It’s up to us to put the pieces together and keep working.”

Kindergarten graduation ceremo-nies usually leave elementary school teachers misty-eyed, the bright hopes for the future competing with those cute, construction-paper caps.

High school graduation exercises can release a good flow of tears from football coaches, especially when the coach watches nearly all his team walk into the next chapter of life.

Such was the case for Gerry Novak as Buckskin after Buckskin, many three-year starters, paraded across the stage last June, diploma in hand.

“Even though there aren’t a lot of re-turning players that have a lot of playing time, they’ve jelled together. The key is to get the young kids to grow up quickly.”

In the late 1980s, he became the first Lancaster-Lebanon League quarter-back to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a 10-game season.

Roughly 30 years later, Andy Breault became the head coach at his alma mater — Elizabethtown — after having served as a longtime Bears assistant.

And in 2018, Breault’s first year at the helm, Elizabethtown’s spread offense put up 2,570 passing yards in 11 games. The Bears were one of only three L-L teams to surpass 2,000 passing yards, with QB Cole Patrick’s 233 yards per

Bears look to hit the ground runningElizabethtown will rely on experienced O-line

game leading all L-L passers. The air raid attack led Elizabeth-

town to a respectable 3-3 mark in L-L Section Two play, a 6-4 regular season record and an appearance in the Dis-trict Three Class 5A playoffs.

Just about every playmaker from

that squad has graduated. However, four of five O-linemen return. So should fans expect to see more from the Bears’ ground game?

“It’s fair to say there will be a little bit more run-blocking this year,” senior center Joe Sikora said.

On the other side, five defensive starters are back.

“I’d just like to take what last year’s team was able to accomplish and carry that over into this year,” Breault said. “We’re young except for the guys up front. We want to use that to our ad-vantage with the guys up front.”

About the offense

Sikora returns in the trenches along-side senior guard Adnan Traore, ju-

nior tackle Billy McNitt and senior guard Jett Kelly.

Freshman Josh Rudy and sopho-more Patrick Gilhool were battling it out in preseason camp for the starting QB gig. Gilhool got all of the second-team reps a year ago as Patrick’s back-up. Their top targets happen to share the same first name — senior wideouts Cole Rice (six receptions, 128 yards, one touchdown) and Cole Hitz (three receptions, 23 yards).

Time at the tight end spot might be split between Kelly, junior Sean Doll and sophomore Brandonn Frey.

Garden Spot’s Jesse Martin breaks away for a long touchdown run against Palmyra on Sept. 7, 2018.

PATRICK BLAIN | LNP CORRESPONDENT

Conf idence is keyGarden Spot will measure success by gains in skillANDREW [email protected]

On the heels of consecutive hum-bling seasons, they’re keeping it real at Garden Spot in 2019.

No bold projections of making it to districts, no promises of even a win-ning season. The Spartans are young, relatively inexperienced — as many as six returning starters on both sides of the ball — and perhaps a little emo-tionally rattled after a winless 2018.

“My expectation is that we improve,” said junior quarterback Jesse Mar-tin, one of a few on the team who has played through 18 losses over the last two years. “Last year obviously was very upsetting. I’d like to see us win a

few games, possibly break even.”“I expect everybody to play four

quarters, don’t give up,” junior run-ning back and defensive end John Dykie said. “We need 100 percent from everybody to get the job done.”

In the end, success might not be measured by wins and losses, but

Buckskinsoffensive line that carved out 132.5 yards per game.

“I’m ... trying to bring everyone to-gether,” said Mathiot, who said that the progress has been good. “We’re working through that, and I think we’ve got to a pretty good point. We just have to keep it going from here.”

“Our O-line is going to be the ques-tion,” Novak said. “(If ) they can give Bradley a little bit of time to get the ball

off, I think we can do some good things.”“Bradley” being returning quarter-

back Bradley Stoltzfus, who complet-ed 122 of 204 pass attempts for 1,601 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He is also the brother of Grant Stoltzfus, holder of several CV passing records.

“We like to talk back and forth about the records he set and what I’m trying to do,” the younger Stoltzfus said. “I’m definitely carrying over the confidence I had during the season.”

The Bucks will need Stoltzfus to be on target, and, of the Bucks’ top four targets in 2018, the only one returning is Derek Ulishney.

“We also have some fast guys, first years,” notes Ulishney, who pulled in 15 balls for 236 yards and three scores. “Don’t sleep on them. They’ll run right past you.”

Speaking of running, the Bucks’ of-fense is predicated on establishing the run, and Booper Johnson gets the call after averaging 5.25 yards per carry as the understudy to since-graduated Keegan Martin.

About the defense

But what about the other side of the ball?

“We’re really slim on defense,” No-vak admits.

With Ulishney and Zach Fisher re-turning in the secondary and Brandon Camp up front, opportunities abound for newbies as well.

“We need to improve each week,” Novak said.

“I like to say, if we can be around 75-76 percent efficiency, offensively and defensively, after the first week, and then go up by two, maybe three percent every game, I’ll feel pretty good.

“We’re going to have to be simple, and then try to be explosive.”

Mabee (2018 L-L Section Two hon-orable mention) will anchor the de-fensive line, taking orders from mid-dle linebacker Traore (82 tackles, 2018 L-L Section Two second-team all-star).

Rice (64 tackles, eight pass de-flections, two caused fumbles, one blocked field goal) and Hitz (23 tackles) will hold down the safety

spots.

Special teams

Cade Denlinger returns at kicker. And if the Bears can find some block-ers for the return game, they have an adequate option in bringing the ball up the field with Rice, who was a 2018 L-L Section Two honorable mention as a kick returner.

Spartans

Continued from 19

rather how well the Spartans stay in ball-games, how stoutly they play defense, and how diverse the offense be-comes, relieving pres-sure on Martin and Dykie to do it all. Last season, the pair’s com-bined yardage account-ed for about 90 percent of the team’s produc-tion.

Maybe above all, suc-cess will have been achieved if swagger re-turns rivaling that of the Spartans during new/old coach Matt Zam-perini’s first 10 years at Spot.

“We have to do a great job of coaching,” said Zamperini, who guided the Spartans to 56 victo-ries and four playoff ap-pearances from 2006 to 2015. He coached the Al-bright College defensive line the past three sea-sons while remaining at Spot as a teacher.

“We need to help them gain confidence to do their job,” he said, “to build their belief that they can compete.”

Continued from 20 About the offense

Returning with Zam-perini is the spread op-tion, which will feature Martin and Dykie, and Zamperini hopes a few others, applying side-line to sideline pressure. Senior receiver Ethan Good figures to add some depth with Luke Shirk, Derrick Lam-bert and Zander Heagy providing some beef up front.

“When you run the spread, you’re throwing the ball around,” Zam-perini said. “Jesse’s the ideal quarterback for what we want to do. We have some kids who are young but they will pose a threat to secondaries.”

About the defense

Taking over the coordi-nation of the 4-3 scheme is Zamperini. Among his returning starters are Dykie and big bodies Shirk and senior Charles Martin, who both size up at 6-2 and 260 pounds. The defense last season yielded close to 400 yards

and 49 points a game on average.

“We have to play solid, aggressive defense,” Zam-perini said. “That’s the biggest area that needs to be fixed. We need to bring back some defensive at-titude.”

Key to the season

Limiting opposition run game with aggressive play, and getting mean-ingful contributions from offensive weapons not named Martin and Dykie. They will get theirs.

Intangibles

Zamperini’s return will have an impact, of course.

“When the job came open, I felt a sense of duty to take it,” he said. “There are kids on the team I know well and like a lot. They de-serve the best chances to succeed. I think I can show them the best things foot-ball has to offer.”

Final word

“We have everything to gain and everything to prove,” Dykie said of the 0-10 season. “I want to be on the team that brings us out of that (negativity).”

The Pioneers are set to open their final campaign in Section Two of the Lancaster-Lebanon League; L-S will move to Section Three next year in the league’s impending realignment, so this will be the last go-round of rivalry

Out with a bangL-S’s senior class wants to leave its mark on Section 2

games for the Pioneers before they re-kindle some former Section Three ri-valries from back in the day.

L-S will feature one of the top quar-terbacks in the circuit in Sean McTag-gart, a gifted dual-threat player who accounted for 2,420 total yards and 24 total touchdowns last fall in his break-out sophomore campaign.

State championship or bust? There are always plenty of high ex-

pectations wafting around at Man-heim Central, and after a state semi-final loss in 2017, and an excruciating setback in the state final last Decem-ber, the next obvious box to check on the list would be a PIAA crown.

Central’s to-do list includes replac-ing some thunder up front and a key skill kid in the backfield. Still, the bar remains higher than ever for the Barons, who are 34-3 in their last 37

Barons: Much remains to accomplishgames, the four-time reign-ing Section Two champs, the back-to-back District Three Class 5A champs, and they’ll open the season rid-ing a shiny 25-game regu-lar-season unbeaten streak.

“The expectation is to get back to where we were,” vet two-way lineman and re-turning all-star Troy Kolk said. “We know we have big targets on our backs, so we have to go one week and one game at a time.”

About the offense

Rising senior all-state QB Evan Simon, who is clos-ing in fast on Jeff Smoker’s program passing record, committed to Rutgers in the Big Ten earlier this summer, and he’ll have twins Ben and Colby Wagner back on the flanks. Central should be A-OK in the passing depart-ment.

Two concerns here: Cen-tral must replace four O-line kids up front — and that’s annually the Barons’ bread and butter — and find a new feature RB for Tyler Flick, an 1,800-yard rusher last year, and the program’s all-time leading ground gainer.

Some names to become familiar with include Owen Pappas, Larry Marley, Ma-

liki Rivera, Juan Perez and J.D. Grube, who are expect-ed to step into larger skill-player roles.

Kolk is the only full-timer back on the line, and he’ll switch from guard to left tackle, protecting Simon’s blind side. Nolan Weaver has some experience in the trenches, and he’ll flank Kolk. Everyone else will be new.

“One of our biggest con-cerns is getting the line to-gether,” Hahn said. “We’ll need those guys to come to-

gether and get to know their assignments. That’ll be key for us.”

About the defense

Landan Moyer and Flick, two polished all-star line-backers, are gone. And the Barons must replace ball-hawker safety Evan Hosler in the back.

The upside is a veteran front four that includes ends Tyler Hartl and Jake Harbach and tackles Kolk and Weaver. The Wagner

twins are back to anchor the secondary, and Hahn is ex-pecting big things from new ’backers Chris Pagano, Clay Bedi and Perez.

Intangibles

Another Barons calling card is special teams, so keep an eye on the Wagner twins in the return game, and for kickers Logan Shull and Nate Reed to take care of the field-position game.

And probably Central’s biggest intangible: Confi-dence.

“We accept the pressure,” Hahn said. “You can’t fear making mistakes. You can’t fear losing. We know that if we work hard enough, all of those fears go away. We’ll be ready to go.”

Key to the season

Keeping Simon upright. Finding a durable, reliable go-to running back. And getting the new O-line kids on the same page, pronto.

Final word

“The line definitely has to step up,” Kolk said. “They know what they have to do, and they have that mindset. Now we have to come out strong and prove it.”

Thirty-seven seniors from last fall’s seven-win, District Three Class 5A quarterfi-nalist Solanco football team are gone to graduation. And with that, the Mules must re-place 16 starting spots enter-ing 2019. On paper entering camp, a lot of those holes were expected to be filled by a mix of seniors, juniors and sopho-mores.

Long story short, it’ll be a col-lective effort from several fresh-faced varsity players to keep So-

Solanco senior running back/defensive back Rashawn Cart-er said. “Sophomores, all the younger classes. We have a good senior class with a bunch of leadership. Keeping every-body together. We expect a lot out of each other.”

About the offense

Senior Grady Unger will take over the starting QB gig in the Mules’ run-heavy triple-option attack. Unger

spent the last two years learn-ing under the tutelage of QB Joel McGuire. And for what-ever it’s worth, Unger was the starting QB on last year’s JV team that lost just one game.

“By this point, I’m confi-dent with how we run the of-fense,” Unger said. “Joel really taught me everything there is to know about how we run the triple-option.”

Unger will likely toss or hand off to senior Nick Yan-nutz (164 carries, 839 rush-ing yards, three touchdowns),

Solanco: New faces, but high expectations for Mulesamong others.

Junior guard Justin Dagen is the lone returner on the offensive line. Fellow junior Connor Sprout will as-sume duties at center and sophomore Jake Frampton will slide in at the other guard spot. Meanwhile, the two tackle spots were still up for grabs en-tering preseason camp, with juniors Caden Fuller and Deven Rapant and sophomores Connor Smith and Cole

Continued from 26 Gladfelter battling it out.Keep an eye on seniors Jake Smo-

lik and Rusty Spangler at wide re-ceiver.

About the defense

Senior tackle Nate Neuhauser (40 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble) returns on the D-line in Solanco’s 4-3 setup. Alongside him will be newcomers Dagen, Framp-

ton, senior Danny Bird and freshman John Sankus.

Senior Chad Carter (45 tackles) and junior Seth Harnish (84 tack-les, two sacks) are returning line-backers who will provide guidance to newbie junior linebacker Moses Dominguez.

Senior Rashawn Carter (31 tack-les, one fumble recovery) is the lone returner in the defensive backfield. Entering preseason camp, the remain-

ing back positions were up for grabs among senior Josh Firlein, juniors Mason St. Clair, Mason Hecker and Nate Miller, sophomore Jon Morales and freshman Taivon Murphy.

Final word

Chad Carter had this to say on So-lanco’s many new and young starters: “We hold ourselves pretty high. I think we’ll be fine.”

Pioneers: Want to make last Section 2 ride memorable“Having Sean back is a big advantage

for us,” said L-S receiver Jacob Kopel-man, one of McTaggart’s sure-handed targets. “He’s one of the top-ranked dual-threat quarterbacks in his class in the state. There’s a reason for that. So we’re going to stretch some defens-es.”

With a plethora of skill kids in tow, L-S’s offense has the potential to make a lot of defensive coordinators dizzy in the coming months. And after a couple of years of middle-of-the-pack finish-es in the section race, this could be the season the Pioneers are back with the lead pack.

About the offense

McTaggart returns to pilot the Spread Wing-T, and he’s a good one. He’ll have familiar faces like backs Bryan McKim, Alex Knapp, Owen

Continued from 22 Fikkert and Drew Harris, and receiv-ers Kopelman and Austin Stoltzfus at his disposal, giving L-S a must-see of-fense.

However, just one experienced trench enforcer is due back, and that’s OT Zac Shelley.

“We have to protect the quarter-back,” coach John Manion said, “be-cause we’re like four or five deep at wide receiver, and all of those kids are typical No. 1 kind of kids. Skill-wise, we’re set. But we only have the one kid back on the line in Zac. The other guys are coming along; we know who the top eight are, and now they just have to play it out.”

About the defense

A new look for the Pioneers, who junked their 4-3 look in favor of a 3-3 Stack scheme, which Manion dusted off and reinstalled for this fall.

Key cogs should include Kopelman, Knapp and Logan Bradley all return-ing to the secondary, plus Shelley at DT and Christian Garver at inside LB. And here’s a name to remember: Man-ion is high on Michael DelGrande, who should slot in nicely at OG and LB.

“We changed to a three-front scheme, like we used to,” Manion not-ed. “We really like our inside ’backers (Del Grande, Garver, Harris). Up front, it’s kind of a thin group for that style of defense, but they can all move and they all have high motors. They’ll pack a punch for their size.”

Intangibles

Don’t underestimate the last year in Section Two angle; this senior class wants to leave its mark against the usual suspects, and L-S has a battalion of skill kids to light up any scoreboard.

“We’re going to give you everything

we’ve got,” Kopelman promised. “It’s our last season in this section, so we want to go out with guns blazing, and set off some fireworks.”

Key to the season

Giving McTaggart enough time for him to use all of his targets and spread the ball around. And stopping people. All the points should be great; L-S has to play some inspired defense, too.

Final word

“I like the competition level, and how they’ve become an actual ‘team’ already, even before we started prac-ticing,” Manion said. “We have very solid athletes across the board, and our older guys are pushing the young-er guys. They support each other, so that part has been really nice.”

Matt Gingrich(5th season, 26-16)

DAVID BOHRLNP CORRESPONDENT

Had the 2018 football season been a fishing trip, Annville-Cle-ona’s boat would have had sever-al fish in it, but the Little Dutch-men would have been talking about the one that got away.

A-C was 7-3 in the regular season and 7-2 in Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three, earning a home playoff game. But a winnable contest was lost 14-7 to Bermudian Springs in a driving rainstorm.

“I’d be lying if I said we weren’t looking for our first playoff win,” A-C head coach Matt Gingrich said about goals in 2019. “We felt that we left one on the table last year.”

The good news for the Dutch-men is that many of the players who got them close to that first playoff win a year ago are back, including their primary quarter-back and several running backs.

About the offense

Junior Bours, who passed for 630 yards and seven touch-downs and rushed for 654 yards and 11 scores last season, returns as the Dutchmen’s quarterback in his senior season.

Though he does not expect to have a 1,200-yard rusher this year, Gingrich hopes to have sev-eral backs with more than 500 yards each on the ground. Trev-or Porche is back after running for 700 yards in seven games last season. Evan Heilman and Tyler Long both return as well after productive years in 2018.

A new face among the starters

Playof f goals for A-CLittle Dutchmen sorely want the win that eluded them in 2018

is 6-4 wideout Cory Boyer, giv-ing Bours a large target when the Veer offense attacks through the air. The offensive line has four returning starters: tackles Matt Pajski and Declan Schaun-shessy, and guards Jaren Bom-gardner and Dion Lopez.

About the defense

The Dutchmen expect to be small up front in their 4-3 align-ment, but hope to make up for their size with some quickness.

Defensive end Dante Bonilla and tackle Logan Wagner are back in their starting roles. Re-turning linebackers are Romeo Varela and Dan Tobias.

Gingrich does not expect to have a 140-tackle player like Gavin Stoudt, who has gradu-ated, but several 60-tackle linebackers. All four defensive backs have starting experience: corners Dylan Scheer and Long, and safeties Josh Speraw and Heilman. Mac Plummer will do the placekicking and some of the punting along with Bours and Porche.

Intangibles

The scheme on offense and defense will be about sharing the load. The offense will be giving several carries to a half-dozen backs, and the lineback-ers will be taking on responsi-bilities across the field.

Gingrich said that last year, he had to factor in which players were on the field before calling certain plays, and occasionally having to change the call at the last moment when he realized which combination of players was out. This season, he feels that will not be an issue — all of the players know how to per-form each play.

Key to the season

The Dutchmen have 42 play-ers on the roster. Gingrich said he is comfortable with the depth in terms of those num-bers, but he needs to make sure that the second string players are ready to go for Week One.

Final word

“I feel like I’ve got kids who

are smart and football smart,” Gingrich said. “I have been able to change things in practice on the fly. We’ve discussed why I’m

doing certain things, and we have players who under-stand. They aren’t just play-ing football. They’re think-ing football.”

Annville-Cleona’s Evan Heilman goes up over Octorara’s Matt Keating (1) to break up a touch-down pass in the second quarter in Atglen on Aug. 30, 2018.

Columbia just needed a while to pick up the system coach Bud Kyle and his staff installed in 2017. After going 0-10 that first year, the Crimson Tide got off to an 0-3 start in ’18.

But then things began to shift. The Tide went 3-4 in their final seven

games last fall, finishing one spot shy of qualifying for the four-team District Three Class 2A playoff field. It marked quite the turnaround from that win-less season. And the three victories were the program’s most since 2013.

What’s more, two of the four losses came by single-digit margins. Turn those around and the Tide would’ve leaped

Tide f ind motivationWith every starter back, Columbia eyes an end to its 7-year playoff drought

into the postseason. That narrow margin has served as motivation over the offsea-son for a Columbia team that brings back every starter from a year ago.

“A lot of them were aware going into the last week of the season that if we won that game we had the potential of going to a district playoff game,” Kyle

said. “We ask these kids to set goals. And a lot of their goals is to get to a dis-trict championship game. They knew what it could have been. The potential is there. The hard work and dedication from the guys is where we came a long way from last year to this year.”

The possibility of snapping a seven-

year playoff drought is within reach.“Everybody knows what they have

to do,” senior quarterback Matt Mc-Cleary said. “They have their own role.

Chad Risberg(2nd season, 6-4)

HEAD COACH

JOHN [email protected]

There’s optimism in Mount Joy. Just listen to senior lineman Connor Ruhl, a two-way Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three all-star last season.

“I think we’re going to be better than last year,” Ruhl said.

Donegal went a respectable 6-3 in Section Three play and 6-4 overall in 2018, finishing just one spot shy of qualifying for the 10-team District Three Class 4A playoff field. Of those four losses, three were by eight points or less. In other words, the Indians were in just about every game.

And seven defensive starters are back from that team. As are four of five O-linemen, including Ruhl.

“We’re more solid on the line this year,” Ruhl said. “I think we lacked on the line last year. We weren’t as strong as we needed to be.”

It’s also Year Two under coach Chad Risberg, which means a lot of the players are more familiar with the playbook than they were this time last season. And even though the In-dians will need to find new skill guys on offense, junior quarterback Trent Weaver did start two games last year, including the Week Six 21-20 victory at Octorara.

Then there’s this added component:

Indians read between linesHope experienced returners add up to additional success in 2019 season

the Indians are embracing their small roster of 33 players and the inherent challenges based on that roster, such as many of the starters going both

ways on Friday nights.“Everybody usually doubts us a lot,”

Ruhl said. “I think we’re going to do just fine this year.”

About the offense

The strongest unit of the Indians’ Wing-T offense will be in the trenches, with the return of seniors Ruhl and AJ McCarty and juniors Joel Grillo and Owen King.

Ruhl and McCarty were both L-L Section Three all-stars last year.

Donegal will need to fill in at the skill positions, where Weaver (6 for 14, 70

DAVID BOHRLNP CORRESPONDENT

Elco comes into the 2019 football season with sev-eral key players returning from a team that posted an 8-3 record overall, 7-2 in Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Three and qualified for the District Three playoffs.

But while the Raiders do have some experience coming back, the actual number of players is small. For a team that lived on the edge in 2018 — the Raid-ers’ first five wins were all by seven points or fewer — it will be important not to take any steps back in the early weeks of the season.

About the offense

No surprise that junior Braden Bohannon is back as the quarterback in the Veer offense.

But in 2019, coach Bob Miller wants to be sure that Bohannon is able to utilize his teammates in the backfield. The goal is to have running backs Luke Williams and Jordan Fernandez take some of the pressure off Bohannon’s legs and arm.

But when Bohannon is throwing, he will still have three-year starter Evan Huey to get the ball to, plus Austin Martin, who returns from a back injury. The key for the offense will be how quickly the line jells, with two new guards in the mix. Center Logan Tice and tackles Ben Wargo and Hunter Hockley are back.

About the defense

Miller said that the success of the defense will hinge on the impact of the defensive line, where Hockley is back at end. John Ball did not start last year but Miller said he has made tremendous strides since last fall and could be a key for the Raiders.

Luke and Erik Williams key the linebacker corps, tak-ing the inside positions in Elco’s 4-4 alignment. Bohan-non will take free safety, while Huey, Virdicio Chekanov and Austin Martin will line up at cornerback. Landon Gettle and Reece Shuey could each take placekicking duties. Shuey and Bohannon can both punt.

Intangibles

The Raiders have 36 players on the roster. Miller

Positive about progressWith many players back after successful 2018, Elco has confidence to spare

said there is a large freshman class waiting to come up, but the sophomore class is smaller, keeping the numbers down.

Though Miller isn’t worried about the overall total, he does have concerns about individual positions on the field if there are injuries.

Key to the season

Miller pointed to two issues, one physical and one mental, when discussing what the Raiders need to do to be successful this fall.

First, he said, the turnover ratio must improve. Second, the players must enjoy each day they put on pads. Miller feels that if the team can keep a positive attitude throughout the year, it will give extra energy to the two-way players and help them finish on top of evenly matched games.

Final word

“We really want to see more big plays and not just have three yards and a cloud of dust,” Miller said.

“It’s important to get the linemen to understand the offensive scheme more. You look at Cocalico and Annville-Cleona, their yards per carry was much higher than ours. ... (The linemen) get into the sec-ond and third level.”

Elco QB Braden Bohannon runs the ball against Columbia on Oct. 26, 2018. Bohannon is back for his junior season.

A new era of Lancaster Catholic football began last year with a 10-0 regular-season run, a Lancaster-Leba-non League Section Three title, a No. 1 seed in the District Three playoffs and a bye through the quarterfinals of the postseason tournament. But Todd Mealy’s first season as the Crusaders’ head coach met an abrupt ending with a 20-10 loss to Bermudian Springs in the district semifinals.

“Obviously, it was a tough loss,” senior lineman Liam Besecker said, “but I think instead of sitting back and playing the blame game, we just stepped up. We knew we needed to get better, and that’s what we’ve been doing.”

With a core of veteran players at skill positions and underclassmen eager to contribute, a renewed and refocused Lancaster Catholic squad looks to re-tain its Section Three supremacy with a chance to venture deeper into post-season play.

About the offense

Gavin Sullivan returns for a third season under center for the Crusaders after completing 63 of 101 passes last

what we’re trying to do to them. And that split second difference of not having to process after he catches the snap to think about it, where he already knows, you can see it in practice. He just looks so much more crisp.”

Indiansyards, one TD) and senior wide receiv-er Jacob Shoemaker (nine receptions, 146 yards, two TDs) have the most var-sity experience.

Risberg said he expects the backfield to rotate between senior Joe Fox (10 carries, 62 yards) and juniors Garrett Blake (seven carries, 52 yards) and Mason Ober (10 carries, 43 yards).

About the defense

After giving up 20-plus points in six of 10 games while allowing an aver-age 300 yards, the Donegal defense is expected to be much improved with seven starters back in its 5-2 setup.

Ruhl (73 tackles, four tackles for loss), Kling (41 tackles, four tackles for loss), McCarty (43 tackles, three tack-les for loss) and junior D-end Garett Blake (57 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack) return on the D-line. Ruhl was a L-L Section Three first-team all-star D-tackle in 2018.

Grillo (44 tackles, one tackle for loss) will hold down one of the two inside linebacker posts while the defensive backfield will be led by Shoemaker (20 tackles) and senior free safety Joe Fox (79 tackles, eight pass deflections, three interceptions).

ColumbiaWe can’t have a superstar out there trying to do what they want to do. We have to be on the same page.”

About the offense

McCleary was a Lancaster-Leba-non League Section Three second-team all-star last season. And he’s already getting looks from NCAA Division II PSAC programs and a couple low-level Division I colleges. He’ll direct Columbia’s spread of-fense with top targets in senior tight end Ryan Redding (2018 L-L Section Three honorable mention, 40 recep-tions, 524 yards, two TDs) and wide-outs Demetrius Diaz-Ellis (2018 L-L Section Three first-team all-star, 21 receptions, 509 yards, seven TDs) and Darnell Tucker (19 receptions, 265 yards, one TD).

The ground game should also be

Continued from 29

strong with a returning O-line made up of seniors Dale Nell and Matt Gambler, juniors Jacob Bianco and Aiden Gladfelter and sophomore Collin McCarty.

That group will open holes for se-nior Luke McGinnis and sophomore Nate Glenn, each of whom went over 100 rushing yards last season. Mc-Cleary (195 rushing yards) is also tough to bring down when he gets outside of the pocket. And keep an eye on freshman back Stevie Revis.

About the defense

Gambler, Bianco, Nell and senior Gabe Davilla will front Columbia’s 4-4 defense. Gambler and Davilla were both L-L Section Three second-team all-stars last season.

Behind them are senior lineback-ers McGinnis, Redding and Julius Martinez and sophomore Robert Footman.

Juniors Diaz-Ellis and Darnell Tucker will patrol in the defensive backfield.

The Mounts may be a different team this season, but they boast a number of familiar faces — 18 returning play-ers in all — with that experience bring-ing some added excitement and loftier goals to War Memorial Field.

“The past couple of years, the main question everyone wanted to know was are you guys going to win a game. Now, after last season, going 5-5, break-ing the streak and all of that, people are saying how many are you going to win?” coach Kris Miller said. “Can you

Continued from 32

be one of the last teams at the end that have a shot in Week Nine or Week 10 to win a section championship? We talk about that’s what the expectations are and now our work and our approach has to meet those expectations.”

About the offense

The expectations might be the highest for the Ephrata offense, which returns the Section Three Quarterback of the Year in Keefer (1,231 passing yards, 760 rushing yards, 27 total touchdowns) and its entire wide receiving corps, led by last year’s team leaders Tucker Par-mer (437 yds, 4 TDs) and Sam Knowles (323 yds, 4 TDs).

The Mounts will turn to juniors Rich-ard Greer and Miracle Wratto in the backfield, where Miller hopes the duo will

provide a “thunder and lightning punch.”“We didn’t have to start back at square

one on offense,” Miller said. “It’s the same offense that we ran last year, so now we’ve started where we finished in Week 10 and now we can add a few more wrinkles. We’re a lot farther ahead in the game and that can help us a lot earlier in the year to be really competitive and be exciting to watch on offense.”

About the defense

Ephrata lost a number of starters, but that’s given Miller the chance to change the defensive scheme to a 4-3 after two years playing in a 3-3 stack. The move is one the coach hopes will fix the issues on the perimeter and al-low the squad to showcase its speed.

Look for Parmer at safety and

Knowles and Castor Shuman return-ing at corner to lead the secondary, while Greer heads the defensive ends and Trent Martin and Zach Wanous steer the linebackers.

Intangibles

“This is probably the most athletic group that we’ve had,” Miller said, “so we’ll be able to do things, maybe play a little faster than we have before.”

Final word

“We know what it takes now and now we know how to raise that bar,” Knowles said. “Everyone’s going to be surprised once they see how hard we’ve worked in the offseason in games.”

In 2013, Lebanon’s Mark Pyles had what might have been Lancaster-Leb-anon League football’s all-time MVP season as a quarterback, linebacker and placekicker, dragged the Cedars to a winning record in L-L Section Two and (barely) into the District Three Class 5A playoffs.

Then an enrollment surge pushed Lebanon to Class 6A and L-L Section

Cedars’ future is nowPlayers buying in to work ethic, realizing potential

One, where just two years ago another brilliant QB, Zakee Salisman, made the offense Madden-like. Overmatched everywhere else, the Cedars didn’t win a league game.

Lebanon is still in 6A, but now in Section Three. Many of the right ele-ments — including, but not limited to the quarterback position — seem to be falling into place.

“People are starting to realize the potential we have,” linebacker An-drew Bowers said. “People want to put something into football.”

Sixteen starters are back from a team that won five games in Section Three a year ago.

The roster had around 55 names on it as practice began. Almost all of them attended a team camp at Millersville University in July. The weight room has been busy at a school where that has not commonly been the case.

“I can tell that they like each other, like being around one another, and they’ve been working their tails off,” veteran coach Gerry Yonchiuk. said. “Just a lot of positive energy.”

Start with Isaiah Rodriguez, a 6-5 ju-nior who completed 56 percent of his throws for 1,938 yards and 18 touch-downs last year. He led Section Three in passing attempts, completions, yards, TDs and passer rating.

Rodriguez is more of a drop-back guy than Pyles or Salisman. He spent a week this summer at the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana observ-ing guys like Clemson’s Trevor Law-

rence, Georgia’s Jake Fromm and Or-egon’s Justin Gilbert, and came away “impressed with their footwork, and just how fast their feet move.”

There are plenty of speedy guys for Rodriguez to throw or hand the ball to, but the real key could be a solid front anchored by returners Camren Eber-hart at center, tackles Matt Carvajal and Synsier Gonzalez and guard Jaden Deitzler.

About the defense

Lebanon finished second in Section Three in total defense a year ago and third in points allowed. Nine starters are back. Critically, according to Yon-chiuk, that includes all three inside linebackers in the Cedars’ unusual 3-3 base front — Bowers, David Vargas and Skyler Sattizahn.

“That’s so important,” Yonchiuk said. “They’re like quarterbacks. An-drew, in particular, is the quarterback of our defense. It takes a lot off of our staff, because I can count on them.”

Final word

Yonchiuk believes Section Three is where the Cedars belong — for now.

“Two years ago, in Section One, we couldn’t win a game, and that was a re-ally talented team, but we just didn’t have the depth in numbers,” he said.

“So we’ve built that back up. Will we be back in Section Two eventually? Yes, probably.

“It’s a different deal for us, and for all the urban school districts in our league. It’s a unique thing.”

People are starting to realize the potential we have. People want to put something into football.

Roy Wall(10th season, 45-48)

HEAD COACH

MIKE [email protected]

In 2004, Roy Wall’s first year as head coach at Mill-ersburg High, his Indians went 0-10.

Two years later they were playing for a district championship — the first of four district finals, and one title, over the next five years.

At Northern Lebanon, Wall won Lancaster-Leba-non League Section Three titles in 2014, ’15 and ’17. But by the middle of the ’17 season, he was sensing deja vu.

“We were dealing with 22, 23 players, with injuries and eligibility and everything like that,” he said. “We canceled our JV season after Week Two.”

In short, Wall saw the Vikings’ 2018 season com-ing.

He restarted the JV program, and played every non-senior on his roster in every JV game. Varsity Friday nights were a baptism by fire.

The varsity went 1-9, 1-8 in the section. The JVs went undefeated.

“It was basically starting from scratch,” Wall said. “The good thing is now we have nine starters back on both sides of the ball.”

Vikings poised to riseAfter a rocky 2018 season, Northern Lebanon has sights on comeback trail

About the offense

The Vikings don’t actually have “everybody back” — two of last year’s three leading rushers and receivers have graduated. That’s a little deceptive, though. Four different Vikings threw passes last year, but Wall did find a quarterback, Ethan Borcky, now a senior, who completed 53 percent of his throws for 1,328 yards a year ago, despite running for his health. A lot.

There are some solid skill-position guys, like run-ning back Nick Winters and receivers Nate Leedy-Reidel and Alex Folmer. Leedy-Reidel and Folmer combined for 35 catches for 434 yards last year. The key, as always, will be developing enough big guys up front to compete on the line of scrimmage.

About the defense

This was a problem in 2018. The Vikings yielded nearly 400 yards and 43 points per game. Incredibly, they were outrushed 2,539 to 495 for the season.

And the only Viking to make the all-Section Three defense a year ago, end Seth Ebersole, was a senior. Many of the guys mentioned on offense will have to get

it done on this side of the ball too, along with linebacker Chase Bressler, end Ashton Seip and DB Josh Werni.

The phrase “nowhere to go but up” seems to apply.

Final word

“I feel like there’s a lot of pride in our program,” Borcky said. “We weren’t exactly the biggest and strongest last year, so a lot of us got in the weight room, did a lot of training and seven-on-seven.

“There’s more (commitment) now, especially from the seniors.”

Second outings, whether for a band, writer, filmmaker or football team, are looked at from the inside as an oppor-tunity to grow and improve, and often from outside influences in anticipa-tion of a backslide.

As the Octorara Braves embark on their second season in the Lancast-er-Lebanon League, the experience gained by the nine starters returning on both offense and defense the first time around should help immeasur-ably in avoiding any of the latter for a team that went 2-7 in Section Three last year.

“Last year, we were just trying to compete, but this year, we’re trying to win,” senior guard/linebacker Colby Wrigley said.

Senior tight end/defensive end Matt Keating echoed the sentiment.

“Last year it was more just to see who we’re up against and what to watch for,” he said. “Now, we know what to expect and we can compete with these teams.”

About the offense

Senior quarterbacks Nick Mattingly and Jansen Schempp are back shar-ing snaps, and are joined by returning starters at all the skill positions. Soph-omore running back Michael Trainor (73 carries, 375 yards) and tight end Keating (17 receptions, 200 yards) return with Schempp (21 receptions, 286 yards, three touchdowns) and Mattingly (8 receptions, 179 yards, 2 touchdowns) lining up wide when not under center, along with sophomore Caleb Rising.

The running game, lead by the two QBs, will benefit from the return of four of last years five starters on the O-line: senior Wrigley, junior Aidan Ross and sophomores Angel Mauricio and Kaden King.

Of his quarterbacks, coach Jed King said, “They both can run the full com-plement of offense when they’re play-ing quarterback and I think that really

DAVE [email protected]

One of those unsung lifers who are seemingly the backbone of every ath-letic program, new Pequea Valley head coach Jeff Werner steps into the spot-light after 33 seasons under the radar.

For 26 seasons, Werner assisted his former high school coach, Phil Kauff-man, and Kauffman’s successor, Dave Gingrich, at Cocalico before getting his first taste of head coaching — albeit at the junior high level — for Ephrata.

After seven seasons prepping the Mountaineers of the future — includ-ing winning 13 of the last 14 games — Werner felt ready for a new challenge.

“I’m pretty excited about it. I had op-portunities to move up,” Werner said, “but the main reason I stayed down was because I just like working (with) and developing kids. I got a lot of grati-fication from that.

“This job came up, I thought, ‘Well, I’m not getting any younger. If I’m go-ing to fulfill this, you know, let’s go for it now.’ ”

Werner takes over a program that has struggled of late with injuries and low numbers. He looks to turn that page.

“I’ve got a great group of kids,” he said. “One thing I noticed, right out of the get go with these guys, they’re very hard workers, they’re all business.

“As a coach, it’s pretty refreshing to be able to coach that type of mental aspect. They’re doing well, picking up the system and I feel good about the upcoming season.”

throws teams for a loop. We’re run-ning an offense that I feel this year is going to keep teams off balance with different sets and we have a lot of guys who can carry the ball out of those sets. So it’s going to be a little bit more unpredictable.”

About the defense

Two-way players Trainor (54 tackles), Schempp (50 tackles) and Mattingly (21 tackles, 2 in-terceptions) anchor a defensive backfield that should be a strength this year.

Senior linebackers Wrigley (45 tackles, one sack), Logan Forte (22 tackles) and Nick McCaw (20 tack-les, one sack) and defensive tackle Matt Joe (12 tackles) along with returning DT Ross (16 tackles) and DEs Keating (13 tackles) and King (15 tackles).

Key to the season

Octorara led Section Three last year in both turnovers given up (23) and taken away (17).

“Those are two things that we practice every single day with our skill kids and our line guys,” King said.

“We practice to create turnovers, and we practice to protect the foot-ball and get the football out. We be-lieve turnovers win football games and so that’s one of our main fo-cuses.”

Final word

“We had a pretty big senior class graduate in our last year in the Ches-Mont League,” King said. “So we came in with a lot of inexperi-enced guys and we didn’t score a ton of points. That’s going to change be-cause these guys have been on the field, they gained the confidence from playing last year and compet-ing and battling.

“I think that they’re ready for this next step.”

in enough work to complete 53 per-cent of his passes for 418 yards.

“By the last two weeks, three weeks, I had the idea down and just was smoother than the first week,” he said.

“I understand the game of football a lot better, I’ll tell you that.”

About the defense

Bailey is one of six returning letter

tight end Andrew Miklos and wide-outs Mason McClaire and Henry Gart-ley. They complement a multi-faceted rushing attack that includes Jeffrey Harley Jr. (80-920, 15 TDs), Nevin Ro-man, and Alex and Tony Cruz.

About the defense

Miklos, an outside linebacker and a Delaware commit, has been the Cru-saders’ centerpiece, recording 38 tack-les, including two for loss and six sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. Alex Cruz (ILB), Besecker and Devin Atkinson (DE), Trey Wells (DT) and Roman (FS) return as key pieces of a Catholic defensive unit that allowed an L-L League-low 197 yards per game last year.

Intangibles

As the reigning section champion coming off an unbeaten regular season campaign, the Crusaders know they’ll get the best efforts from their L-L League rivals. Last year, games with Lebanon and Donegal were decided by one possession, and Annville-Cleona came up nine points short. Lancaster Catholic expects similar challenges throughout the schedule.

Key to the season

“At the end of the day,” Eck said, “it

comes down to our offensive line.”Wells (guard), Besecker (tackle) and

Atkinson (tackle) have the experience to anchor the line.

Junior Robert Anater is among the underclassmen looking to fortify the unit.

If the line can stay healthy and con-sistent, Lancaster Catholic’s skill play-ers have the opportunity to make key plays throughout the season, which is scheduled to open Aug. 23 at home against Camp Hill.

Final word

“I think having that loss (to Bermu-dian Springs) really helped us real-ize that we don’t like to lose,” Harley said, “and that we need to work on a lot more stuff. We can’t just run through teams.

“We train angry, and I think we have a better mentality with how we’re sup-posed to play against teams. We have more fight. We’re in there to really play.”

winners for the Braves, along with Mi-chael Beals and Jacob Stoltzfus. And all will see double duty on both the of-fensive and defensive sides of the foot-ball.

“Last year, at linebacker, the first couple weeks were a struggle,” said Stoltzfus, who returns there to anchor the defense while also starting at tight end.

“I feel I put a lot of work in and it paid off,” he continued. “I want that leader-

ship (role), and that responsibility. I’m ready for it and I want to be able to show my other teammates that I can do it.”

Final word

Asked what would constitute a suc-cessful season, Werner said, “I set pretty high goals. I want to go into ev-ery game prepared to win, expecting to win.

“Does that happen? No. OK. But that’s how we’ll prepare. I don’t have any win-loss record in mind, obvious-ly. I’m just trying to win every game.”
