Dear MMTA Friends and Colleagues, Its late April. The grass is the lush, deep green of first spring, and simultaneously there are snow flurries on the Western Minnesota prairie. Over last three weeks Ive eagerly examined the tulips I planted last fall. First, verifying the bulbs werent devoured by squirrels during the winter and will, in fact, sprout. Now, inspecng their progress daily and spraying natural deterrents to discourage the rampant bunny populaon of Morris from feasng on them before they bloom. If Im a bit obsessive, its because tulips are my favorite flowers. Beyond their sheer beauty, I love their symbolism. Tulips herald spring—a new season, a new start. A me for growth, for re-birth and transformaon. Moreover, opmism is required to plant these ny, onion- like bulbs in the darkening days of autumn—knowing that if we culvate paence, hope, and faith as we wait through the long, dark night of the winter, our ancipaon will be rewarded when we see the emerging buds awaken. MMTA Foundation Recital and Awards Ceremony on Sunday night, where, in addition to the fabulous music, the Foundation Board will unveil a new MMTAF program I’ve been developing that honors excellent teaching.

• Did you know? The 2022 MTNA Conference will be in Minneapolis, March 26-30, 2022! The last time the national conference was in Minnesota was in 2000. I was thrilled to accept the invitation to serve on the selection com-mittee for the 2022 conference, and look forward to crafting a meaningful, inspiring conference alongside the other committee members. The breadth and scope of the national conferences is incredible—I hope to see you in person at the downtown Hilton in March!

Some parting thoughts: MMTA works because of its members. Because of You! We are all volunteers doing our best to fulfill the mission of advancing the music teaching profession, while striving to nurture and inspire our music students. Our organization is only as strong as those who actively participate—so please consider this a call for you to become more involved! The Board of Directors has openings for the next term, and there are other volunteer positions open as well. This is your opportunity to make a difference, to contribute to our beloved professional organization, to help steer MMTA into the future. Consider sharing your talents and bringing your gifts—we will all be more richly blessed because of it.

Finally, thank you. Thank you for your trust in the MMTA Board of Directors as we have navigated these unprecedented times. Thank you for your grace and flexibility as we all have learned and adapted together! And, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Join us for our 122nd MMTA Convention. This year we will again be meeting virtually on zoom. Rather than two full days we will meet over three mornings, with performances in the afternoons and evenings. (All times Central Daylight.)

The MusicLink Foundation had to get creative this year in its fundraising efforts, so a MusicLInk National Plaython is being planned for May 1st and there’s still time to register if you or your students would like to participate. The registration deadline is April 10th. You will also find a Playathon Montage featuring performances from past Minnesota MusicLink Playathons on the Home Page. This was National’s way of recognizing our annual Playathon, since we were unable to hold it this year. February 12-13, 2022 is the proposed date for our next Playathon. MMTA’s own Kathryn Karg and her husband, Andy, organized a MusicLink Playathon of their own which took place on 2 recent weekends and featured dozens of students from their studios. They raised over $5,000 to support the Minnesota MusicLink program and I couldn’t be more grateful to them for sponsoring this amazing event. Thank you, Kathryn, Andy and all of your students and parents! If you are an active MusicLink teacher with a graduating MusicLink student, who has been in the program for 3 years or more and will be attending college, please have him/her apply for the $1,000 Ruth Stenson MusicLink award. The form is on the MMTA website and the deadline is May 31st. This has been a tough year for families, so if you have student who can use your help to keep them in lessons, please consider the MusicLink program—even if it’s only needed for a short time. It can make all the difference. If you would like to learn more about MusicLink and will be attending the MMTA Convention in June, I will be doing a session on Tuesday June 15th at 10:30 am. Job Position Spotlights: VP Convention Do you like organizing and planning events? If so, the VP Convention job might be for you! The VP Convention works with a support committee to put together the annual MMTA Convention. This includes things like creating a theme, talking with hotels to find a good venue, meal planning (and sometimes tasting!), working with renowned musicians during the key-note speaker search, and more. The VP Convention also attends Board meetings and is able to give input on the direction of the organization as a whole. VP Marketing Marketing is about sharing things about a company or group with the world. How do you share information about MMTA with students and parents, and maybe even other teachers? Or in a school setting? Or with your local community? The VP Marketing works with a support committee to promote MMTA on social media, through advertising, and in other ways. The VP Marketing also attends Board meetings and is able to give input on the direction of the organization as a whole. VP Piano Education Piano Exams and Theory Exams make up the bulk of the annual MMTA event calendar. These exams, based on curriculum unique to MMTA, help shape the musical journeys of the next generation. The VP Piano Education works with Program Directors, development committees, Site Administrators, and other personnel to continually present music learning opportunities to students. The VP Piano Education also attends Board meetings and is able to give input on the direction of the organization as a whole. VP Voice & Instrumental Programs (a.k.a. VP VIP) In addition to events for piano students, MMTA also offers curriculum and events for voice and instrumental students — including flute, guitar, organ, violin, and viola. Curriculum may be available in the coming years for other instruments as well. The VP VIP works with Program Directors to continually present music learning opportunities to students. The VP VIP also attends Board meetings and is able to give input on the direction of the organization as a whole. Treasurer The Treasurer works in tandem with the VP Finance to ensure the financial health of the organization. The Treasurer oversees and leads the planning of the annual budget. In tandem with the MMTA President, the Treasurer signs checks to pay for organizational expenses. The Treasurer also attends Board meetings and is able to give input on the direction of the organization as a whole.

Deadline for ordering trophies for students who have earned them is: May 20th.

• Go to www.mnmusicteachers.com/products. • Locate the correct trophy, then complete the Customization Form. • Add the trophy/trophies to the cart. • Complete the check-out process. The MMTA Office will notify you when trophies come in.

See 2020-2021 Handbook for more information. The next trophy order deadline is May 20th.

All other Challenge awards may be ordered at any time.

Summer Theory Exam – This coming August MMTA will offer a virtual theory exam and hopefully a metro area in-person theory exam. The in-person exam will depend upon finding a venue that is willing to host us and has the space for us to follow Covid safety protocols. Please watch the weekly updates for more information on this.

Virtual exams are here to stay! As we move back to in-person exams we will continue virtual exams on 3 dates spread throughout the year. If you are teaching students in other states or countries, they will be able to participate in MMTA theory exams.

Theory Thursdays – This past year the theory committee held 20 minute mini-sessions on Theory Level 7 on Thursday mornings via Zoom. We plan to continue Theory Thursdays next year, beginning in September with intro classes on every level and then a 12 week course on Theory Level 6 from mid-October through the winter. These classes will be through Zoom and are free for MMTA teachers and their students. Watch for more information on this in the fall.

New edition of Workbook 5. The theory committee has been hard at work revising Theory Workbook 5. This new and improved version will be for sale starting January 2022 and testing on this version will begin in the fall of 2022.

New edition of Workbook 4 . This new workbook is for sale and testing using this version will begin in the fall of 2021. August testing will continue to use the old edition.

MP3 files. Did you know that recordings of all the aural exercises in all the theory workbooks can be found on the MMTA Website? Look under Programs: Piano and scroll to the bottom of the page where resources for theory can be found. Click on the MP3 box and you will find all the recordings. Level 2, 3, and 4 have recently been updated. The quality of the recordings is better, the recordings will match the new editions of level 3 and 4, and errors are being fixed. Thank you to Susan Sophocleus for taking on this task!

The theory committee has grown and consequently is full of new energy and ideas. 1. How do students earn the awards? Students will earn points for every activity that they participate in through MMTA. The easiest way to know

for sure which activity is included is to follow the registration form. If you mail it to the MMTA office, the activity will count.

2. Which activities earn points? What are the point levels for each award? A complete list of points earned per event and point levels for each award is available in the MMTA Handbook or on the Challenge Awards page on the MMTA website.

3. How many years do students have to earn the awards? The awards accrue over the lifetime of the student. There is no limit to the amount of time a student may take to earn any award.

4. What if a student changes teachers? The points earned will follow the student. Be sure to document each activity and pass that documentation on to the next teacher. Parents may also submit their own documentation (i.e. exam certificates, ensemble programs, etc.) to the new teacher.

5. Will the teacher have to pay an extra fee to cover the cost of the awards? The cost of the awards is now built into the fees for each event. The teacher is responsible for only the cost of shipping. Costs for shipping trophies are available on the Order Form on p. 78 of the 2017-2018 MMTA Handbook. Awards may also be picked up at the MMTA Office.

6. Can teachers order the awards throughout the year? The ribbons and pins will be available throughout the year and at the MMTA Convention. The trophies are custom engraved. Deadlines for ordering trophies are November 15th, March 20th and May 20th each year.

7. Can students combine points earned by participating in two different instruments or voice? Yes. Students can combine points earned from two different teaching studios.

8. How do teachers order awards? An order form is available online or by calling the MMTA office: www.mnmusicteachers.com or (952) 345-0629. Awards can be ordered anytime throughout the year.

9. Do studio recitals or local association recitals earn points? No, association recitals and studio recitals do not count toward the awards.

10. How are points awarded if a student takes the sightplaying or keyboard skills exams separate from the piano comprehensive exam? Students will earn 100 points for taking the sight playing exam and 100 points for taking the keyboard skills exam. If at a later time they complete the comprehensive exam, they will be awarded the final 100 points. The entire exam is worth 300 points, no matter how it is taken.

11. Will a student earn the 300 points for the comprehensive exam if the theory component is not taken? Yes, students will earn the full points regardless of their theory status.

12. Will a student be awarded points if they do not pass an exam? Students will be awarded points regardless of the scores they receive on an exam.

13. How are points recorded? Teachers must keep written record for each of their students who participate in MMTA programs. This documentation does not need to be submitted with the award order, but should be available if requested by the office. A documentation form is available on the MMTA website, or as a paper copy by request.

Events of the past year have led many of us to recommit ourselves to a future where diversity, equity and inclusion are valued and prioritized. We are re-examining all areas of our lives, including our teaching materials. With the goal of introducing our students to the music of composers of many ages, genders, races, and cultures, the MMTA Piano Exam Committee is compiling an Addendum to the 2020 Piano Syllabus.

The committee started by sifting through the lists of repertoire already contained in the current syllabus. We found many pieces by composers of modern Hispanic culture, composers from Malaysia, Japan and China. In the upper levels we found a good selection of pieces by African American composer Nathaniel Dett. Looking for women composers born before 1940, we identified pieces by Clara Schumann, Cecile Chaminade, and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel.

Next, we began to search for more music and more diverse composers. Fortunately, we are not the only teachers seeking out more diverse repertoire. This has been the topic of podcasts, online group discussions, webinars, and several sessions at the MTNA Virtual Conference. We are currently sifting through lists and lists!

Along the way, we have encountered music that will enrich your teaching and entrance your students. Many of you have already encountered the joy embodied in “Ticklin’ Toes” by Florence Price, included on the current contest list. Your slightly younger students will enjoy “Kwela No. 1” by the South African composer Isak Roux. Intermediate students will find a connection with “Billie’s Song” or “Sweet Mister Jelly Roll” from Portraits in Jazz by Valerie Capers. Advanced students will appreciate the complex rhythms of “Troubled Water” by Margaret Bonds.

This is the time of year when I start looking forward: exams are almost done for the school year, Honors Concert is usually almost upon us and I’m eagerly looking forward to some vacation time in the summer. But I’m also impatiently awaiting the new contest list, purchasing new music, and doing my studio planning for fall.

Because this last year has been so drastically different than any of us had ever envisioned, there is excitement yet trepidation as I look forward: when and how is it safe to have students back in my studio? When will things get back to ‘normal’? What will MMTA look like as we begin the new school year?

While I feel accomplished in all I have learned technology-wise in the last year, I have definitely noticed the lack of personal connection with my students. And I am reminded that we have a very isolated job as a piano teacher when I so thoroughly enjoy my Zoom meetings with the MMTA Board and with other local groups. Connecting with other teachers is our way to stay focused, learn new things, and get energized. Our state convention is coming up soon and I am thrilled at the opportunity to join others in learning, appreciating and enjoying time spent on music.

My favorite memory of last year’s convention was Ann DuHamel’s talk about Beethoven and her mention of his A Minor Bagatelle Opus 119, no. 9. I re-discovered it, and have taught it to 3 students this year, loving every note of that charming piece. Every one of us has terrific personal information that is only shared during conversation (or if you are giving a presentation) and while we are doing our convention virtually this year, there are also smaller local groups that might be meeting in person. Outdoors, perhaps?!

We have such a wonderfully large MMTA membership here in Minnesota. I love that we have a Facebook group to share questions, answers and information; that we have local groups to create a closer-to-home sense of belonging, and that so many of us take time to volunteer for the myriad of positions in MMTA!

I look forward to my next two years as MMTA’s next President and want to encourage a connection between all of us. I am working on a meeting to envision the future of MMTA for later this summer. I want to hear from you: how can we meet safely, how can we include those from all over the state (and elsewhere!) and how can we implement new ideas?!

Members of the West Central Division of MTNA met via Zoom during the Virtual Conference in March. Presidents from each state (Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Colorado) provided updates and shared ways their states are handling the many challenges of the past year. Each state reported moving student competitions and exams, local association meetings, state board meetings, and state conferences to online formats. Early in the pandemic, many 2020 spring and fall conferences were cancelled, with a few brave exceptions (Minnesota! Kansas!). As the year wore on, each state was able to plan a virtual version of their next statewide meeting. Presidents shared the variety of online platforms their state utilized to host student programs online. Most reported that participation remained at previous in person levels. Several states experienced a significant financial gain from online events, with no rental/space expense. Every state reported plans to continue to offer online options even once events are able to be held in person. Here are some of the highlights reported by individual states: Congratulations to Colorado, celebrating its 100th anniversary this June. South Dakota offered grant funding to assist teachers with equipment for online teaching. A new collegiate chapter was formed in Minot, North Dakota. Nebraska updated its festival manual and job descriptions. Missouri focused on increasing its social media presence. Several states mentioned an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. Minnesota is working on a Diversity Addendum for its Piano Syllabus. Linda Stump, MTNA Chair of Competitions, announced that Alejandro Cremaschi (CO) has accepted the position of WCD Competition Chair. Many thanks to both Alejandro and to outgoing WCD Competition Chair, David Tauscher. WCD members elected Minnesota’s own Ann DuHamel to serve on the 2021-2023 MTNA Nominating Committee. Congratulations, Ann, and thank you for your service! Division Director Elect Mary Beth Shaffer has been connecting with local association presidents as part of her work with the MTNA Membership Committee. Mary Beth has the distinction of having lived in at least three WCD states – Iowa, Minnesota, and Colorado. WCD Presidents and Presidents Elect keep in touch through quarterly video conference meetings hosted by

the Division Director. Sharing resources and strategies has been especially helpful during this year of change

and uncertainty.

MMTA Board Minutes Highlights—February 2021

• 2021 Logowear has been put into production and will be mailed to all who placed a pre-order for a shirt or tote.

• Convention Committee is working on hiring several new keynote speakers for the 2021 Convention. Motions were passed to contract Noreen Wenjen and Garrett McQueen.

• VP Membership Nick Susi has been in contact with Local Associations around the state. Efforts are underway to recruit new members to Local Associations, especially in Greater MN.

MMTA Board Minutes Highlights—March 2021

• Convention Committee has proposed keeping the registration fee for the 2021 Virtual Convention the same as the 2020 Virtual Convention. Board approved this motion.

• Convention Committee is seeking business sponsorships for keynote speakers and performances. Please talk with businesses in your area to see if they would be interested.

• The Piano Contest Committee will be putting together a video presentation to celebrate winners of the Piano Contest and Young Artist Piano Contest. More information will be available soon.

• Voice & Instrumental Contests and Solo Festival were held. A video was created which features winning students which will be broadcast by Zoom to student participants and their families.

MMTA Board Minutes Highlights—April 2021

• Budget for 2021-2022 was prepared by the Budget Committee and discussed by the Board. Board requested some changes to be made. Budget Committee will re-evaluate some of the areas and present an updated version at the May meeting.

• Piano Contest Committee is working on putting together the Winner Celebration video that will be shown in place of an in-person Honors Concert.

• Convention Committee has selected session presenters for the 2021 Convention.

• A Nominating Committee (including Committee Chair) are needed ASAP. President Ann DuHamel will lead the search for a Chair.

The MMTA Office will be closed on the following dates:

June 28 - July 9, 2021 for 2020-2021 wrap-up, and preparation for the 2021-2022 year.

Calls and emails will be responded to and orders will be processed the week following each closure period.

Unless otherwise announced, the office will be open Wednesdays & Fridays throughout the summer.
