Home School Agreement

Uxbridge High School is committed to providing a positive learning environment in which young people can achieve and enjoy a purposeful and well-ordered programme of studies and experiences. The governors and staff want to establish positive links with parents and actively seek your co-operation in supporting and encouraging your children whilst at this school. Below are clear statements as to what we, as a school, expect and equally what you, as a parent, may expect of us. Ethos Uxbridge High School is a school of choice where, through outstanding teaching; inspirational opportunities and exceptional learning; we open minds and develop unique individuals. Students and staff have the best possible environment in which to achieve, progress, learn and thrive. They are positively focussed, determined and demonstrate respect for all. We are at the heart of our local community, a school in which all students, parents, staff, stakeholders and partners are PROUD to make success happen. Standards of education Uxbridge High School will provide well-qualified and expert staff who will carefully plan all lessons and activities. Students will be fully prepared for examinations and all students will have access to the full range of studies. We expect our students to work hard and to the best of their ability in all the activities they undertake. Students should be prepared to participate in as wide a range of activities as they can. We seek to promote the maximum possible development of individual students’ talents and potential within a tolerant and caring community. Independent Work Independent work is an essential part of a good education. Tasks will also be set to extend and support students’ learning. We ask parents to ensure these are completed regularly in a quiet area at home, by checking the homework app – Show My Homework. You will receive information on the number of hours of independent work that is expected, how to support your child and what to do if there are difficulties. PiXL Edge should also be used by students regularly to help develop their character. Regular and punctual attendance Uxbridge High School expects students to attend regularly and punctually. We will make regular contact with parents and alert you immediately when there are problems or unexplained absences. Parents are reminded that it is your responsibility to ensure your child arrives at school and to inform the school when your child will be absent. Discipline and behaviour The school has an agreed discipline policy and an anti-bullying policy which we expect parents to support. Please take time to read these and other policies on our website – www.uhs.org.uk. The traditional values of courtesy, dress and commitment are highly valued. The wearing of the prescribed uniform by students and the maintenance of a smart, well ordered learning environment will help enhance the reputation for the students and the school. Cashless school site The school is a cashless site and therefore students should not bring money on to the school site for any reason. Payments for lunches, trips, stationery, etc are made via ParentPay only. Curriculum and extra-curricular activities: We regularly review our curriculum offer for all phases of education, including our sixth form. Details of our curriculum offer can be found on our website. In addition, we offer a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities, trips and visits to all students.

Attendance We understand that from time to time students may fall ill. In cases where illness genuinely prevents your child from attending school, we would ask that you contact the student absence line before the start of the school day to advise that your child will not be in attendance. Unless students have ongoing medical issues, we would expect a minimum of 96% attendance. This means your child misses no more than 8 days per year. If your child is going to be late or absent from school, please call the school on 01895 234060, press 1 (for student absence) and leave a message before 8.30am. If the school has not heard from a parent, we will contact them to find out the reason for absence via our automated truancy system. On a student’s return to school following an absence, the parent must write a short note which states the reason for absence. All hospital and dental appointment cards/letters must be provided as evidence prior to leaving school. Punctuality is extremely important and we ask that you make sure your child leaves for school early enough to ensure that they arrive on time at 8.40am. In very exceptional circumstances, the principal may grant permission for students to be absence from school during term time. However, permission will not be granted for holidays. In rare cases, where students are absent from school without permission, it is our duty to inform the local authority, who may issue a fixed penalty notice. Information exchange We also see as central to the school ethos the partnership that exists between the school, parents and students. We see this partnership as a contract between parents, students and the school. We feel that it is instrumental in ensuring that students commit themselves wholeheartedly to the hard work that will ensure they are successful at Uxbridge High School. Many concerns can be quickly resolved before they become problems by a simple telephone call or visit. We will inform you of your child’s progress and encourage you to tell us about any concerns you have, either in relation to the school or changes in home life. The vast majority of communication to parents is made electronically and it is therefore vital that you make sure we have your current email address for these communications. Letters to individual students will be posted home.

Home school agreement – parents

At Uxbridge High School we believe in involving parents fully in the education of their child. We recognise the great benefit to a student’s progress that comes from the active support and involvement of parents. By signing the Admissions booklet, you and your child are agreeing to the following: As a parent of a student at Uxbridge High I agree to: • encourage my child to show respect for all staff and other students at the school; • encourage my child to behave responsibly at school and in other situations where the child is

identified as a student of the school; • ensure attendance and punctuality and keep the school informed about any reason for absence; • ensure my child attends fully, unless unwell, and will not remove my child from school during

term time for the purpose of family holidays; • be aware of and make adequate arrangements for independent work at home; • ensure, to the best of my ability, that my child has all the equipment and books necessary for the

school activities of the day (including PE kit); • be aware of uniform regulations and ensure that my child is correctly dressed; • make every effort to attend parents’ evenings and school functions, as well as attending special

appointments if requested; • check my emails regularly as I understand this is the main communication method by the school; • help promote respect and care for school property and that of others and be prepared to pay for

Home school agreement – students

As a student at Uxbridge High School, I agree to: • treat all members of the school community with tolerance, understanding and respect, as I would

expect to be treated myself; • attend school as required and to be punctual at all times; • have with me all my equipment, books and kit necessary for the school activities of the day; • wear the correct school uniform; • help look after and improve the school environment, including school property; • keep the school rules and behave in a responsible way, both in school and when travelling to and

from school; • complete homework and project work on time; • work to the best of my ability in all areas.

School Uniform

We believe a smart and functional school uniform is a reflection of the commitment and sense of belonging to the school and to the standards of appearance, behaviour and success we wish to encourage. Please note that our uniform is not sold by any shops in the local area and if purchased elsewhere, you may find this is of inferior quality and does not comply with our uniform standards.

ALL CLOTHES MUST BE CLEARLY LABELLED Sports Footwear Girls/Boys will require sports trainers, white soled trainers, football boots (see below). It is important to note that both girls and boys will require football boots. However these must have moulded rubber or plastic studs (either firm or soft ground versions). Metal studs/blades or AstroTurf football boots are not permitted. This is in order for students to be able to play on our new state-of-the-art indoor 3G Astro Turf pitch. Guidance on uniform rules • Extreme hairstyles are not acceptable; • Jewellery is not permitted in school. Students with pierced ears may wear one small pair of

studs; • IPods or any kind of electronic equipment are not permitted on site and the school will not take

responsibility for loss or damage to such items; • We have a ‘see it, lose it’ policy for mobile phones and although students can bring these to

school at their own risk, mobile phones must be kept out of sight, whilst in the school grounds.

In cases of departure from these rules, a child may be required to return home to change.

Communication The vast majority of our communication, including standard letters, principal's newsletters, trip and visit letters, options information etc., is sent to parents electronically by email. All correspondence is also available on our website - www.uhs.org.uk / care & support / letters home. Positive behaviour is also communicated in this way. We also communicate via text to parents’ mobiles advising when an email has been sent and also regarding negative behaviour. It is therefore important that you provide at least one mobile phone number and one email address that you can access.

Equipment All students should have the following basic equipment with them every day:

• 2 black writing pens; • 1 green writing pen; • 2 sharpened pencils; • 1 eraser/rubber (if the pencil does not have one); • 1 highlighter pen; • 1 30cm ruler; • colouring pencils; • 1 glue stick; • 1 geometry set; • 1 scientific calculator; • 1 pencil case;

The school also sells (at cost) all of the stationery required by your child, on site. Payments for these purchases are also made using their fingerprint and this is charged to the same balance as that for meals via ParentPay.

Medical Information The school is unable to administer medication to students without written parental consent due to government regulations. These regulations include giving students’ paracetamol and any medicine sent into school (including asthma medication). If your child is prone to headaches/migraine/period pain etc or is on any other medication (e.g. for asthma) please provide the school with a supply of the appropriate medication, with an accompanying letter stating dosage required. If you give permission for the school to administer medication provided by yourself, please tick the relevant box at the end of the Admissions Booklet. If medical circumstances change, the school must be notified in writing immediately.

Student Restaurant and Cashless System

At Uxbridge High School we use a cashless catering system which means that meals are paid for using biometrics (i.e. fingerprint recognition). The system works by turning an image of your child’s fingerprint into a personalised reference. The reference only contains numbers and letters and does not keep the image of your child’s fingerprint. The personalised fingerprint reference of the student is stored securely on the school’s system. It is important that you activate your ParentPay account, as soon as possible, prior to your child starting at Uxbridge High School. If you use ParentPay for more than one child, their accounts can be merged to one log-in. If you are unable to pay online, the alternative is to use a PayPoint card which will enable the loading of cash at a PayPoint store. To use this method, you will need a separate card for each child. PayPoint cards will only be issued to parents that have no internet access at home or at work, or do not hold a bank card for making payments online. Whilst the first card is provided free of charge, any replacement cards will incur a £1.50 charge. Please allow up to four weeks for the card to arrive, so please contact the school as soon as possible to order this, in readiness for your child starting at Uxbridge High School. A daily spend limit of £5 will be set, but should you wish to set a lower or higher limit, you will be able to do so by contacting the school. All transactions are recorded by day, child, food type, etc., so that you will be able to view exactly what your child is eating, via ParentPay. Access to the school’s printing system also uses biometrics. What if my child is entitled to free school meals? Your child may have been entitled to free school meals at their previous school, however, you will be required to re-apply for this when starting at Uxbridge High School. Please contact the school for further information. Students’ accounts will automatically be credited daily just before lunch. Free school meals allowance entitles your child to a hot meal and pudding. You may add to this if your child would like snacks or drinks at any other time during the school day.

School Trips and Other Activities Please tick the School Trips and Other Activities box on the Admissions Booklet if you are happy for your child to: 1. take part in school trips and other activities that take place off school premises; and 2. be given first aid or urgent medical treatment during any school trip or activity. Please note the following important information before signing this form: • The trips and activities covered by this consent include:

- all visits (including residential trips) which take place during the holidays or a weekend, - adventure activities at any time, - off-site sporting fixtures outside the school day

• The school will send you information about each trip or activity before it takes place.

If your child suffers from any medical condition, please make sure this is detailed in the Admissions Booklet you will return to us.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Relationships and sex education (RSE) is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. The comprehensive programme of RSE at UHS provides students with essential skills for building positive, enjoyable, respectful and non-exploitative relationships and staying safe both on and offline. It is essential for the following reasons: • Children and young people have a right to good quality education, as set out in the United

Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child; • Children and young people want to be prepared for the physical and emotional changes they

undergo at puberty, and young people want to learn about relationships. Older students frequently say that RSE was ‘too little, too late and too biological’;

• RSE plays a vital part in meeting schools’ safeguarding obligations. Ofsted is clear that schools must have a preventative programme that enables students to learn about safety and risks in relationships;

• Schools maintain a statutory obligation to promote their students’ wellbeing, and to prepare children and young people for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of adult life.

A comprehensive RSE programme can have a real positive impact on students’ health and wellbeing and their ability to achieve, and can play a crucial part in meeting these obligations. Please note under new regulations, parents and carers do not have the ability to withdraw their child from relationships education, only sex education. If you wish to remove your child from sex education, please write a letter to the school giving your child’s name, date of birth and reason for removal. Following this, a meeting will be scheduled with a member of the leadership team, where you will be invited into school to discuss these reasons. Removal from sex education takes effect until three terms before your child turns 16. For further details, please see the UHS Relationships and Sex Education Policy available on our website.

Responsible Use of the Internet

Parents must grant permission in order for students to have access to use the Internet, e-mail and other ICT facilities at school. Please tick the relevant box at the end of this booklet to confirm your permission. As a parent, I accept that ultimately the school cannot be held responsible for the nature and content of materials accessed through the Internet and mobile technologies, but I understand that the school will take every reasonable precaution to keep students safe and to prevent students from accessing inappropriate materials. These steps include using an educationally filtered service, restricted access email, employing appropriate teaching practice and teaching e-safety skills to students. I understand that the school can check my child’s computer files and the Internet sites they visit and that if they have concerns about their e-safety or e-behaviour that they will let me know. I will support the school by promoting safe use of the Internet and digital technology at home and will inform the school if I have any concerns over my child’s e-safety. Students must follow the ‘rules for responsible ICT use’ below and by signing the end of this booklet, your child agrees that these rules will keep everyone safe and help us to be fair to others. Acceptable use agreement: students • I will only use ICT systems in school, including the internet, e-mail, digital video, and mobile

technologies for school purposes. • I will not download or install software on school technologies. • I will only log on to the school network, other systems and resources with my own user name

and password. • I will follow the school’s ICT security system and not reveal my passwords to anyone. • I will only use my school e-mail address. • I will make sure that all ICT communications with students, teachers or others is responsible

and sensible. • I will be responsible for my behaviour when using the internet. This includes resources I access

and the language I use. • I will not browse, download, upload or forward material that could be considered offensive or

illegal. If I accidentally come across any such material I will report it immediately to my teacher.

• I will not give out any personal information such as name, phone number or address. I will not arrange to meet someone unless this is part of a school project approved by my teacher.

• I am aware that when I take images of students and/or staff, that I must only store and use these for school purposes in line with school policy and must never distribute these outside the school network without the permission of all parties involved. This includes school breaks and all occasions when I am in school uniform or when otherwise representing the school.

• I will ensure that my online activity, both in school and outside school, will not cause my school, the staff, students or others distress or bring the school community into disrepute, including through uploads of images, video, sounds or texts.

• I will support the school approach to online safety and not upload or add any images, video, sounds or text that could upset any member of the school community.

• I will respect the privacy and ownership of others’ work online at all times. • I will not attempt to bypass the internet filtering system. • I understand that all my use of the internet and other related technologies can be monitored

and logged and can be made available to my teachers. • I understand that these rules are designed to keep me safe and that if they are not followed,

school sanctions will be applied and my parent/carer may be contacted. • I will not sign up to online services until I am old enough to do so.

Biometrics At Uxbridge High School we use a cashless catering system which means that meals are paid for using biometrics (i.e. fingerprint recognition). The system works by turning an image of their fingerprint into a personalised reference. The reference only contains numbers and letters and does not keep the image of your child’s fingerprint. The personalised fingerprint reference of the student is stored securely on the school’s system. On your child’s first day at school, your child will have an image of their fingerprint turned into a personalised reference. Your child will pay for their meals using their fingerprint. Payments must be made via ParentPay (for which you will receive a username and password shortly). If you are unable to use the internet in order to access the ParentPay website, please contact the school for a PayPoint card that will allow you to top up your child’s ParentPay balance – these can be topped up at a large number of PayPoint located at local shops. A daily spend limit of £5 will be set, but should you wish to set a lower or higher limit, you will be able to do so by contacting the school. All transactions are recorded by day, child, food type, etc., so that you will be able to view exactly what your child is eating, via ParentPay. The school also sells (at cost) all of the stationery required by your child, on site. Payments for these purchases are also made using their fingerprint and this is charged to the same balance as that for meals. Access to the school’s printing system also uses biometrics.

YES NO I am happy for my child’s biometrics to be held by the school for the

purpose of paying for meals and stationery, and accessing the school’s

printing system.
