CONTENTS NEWSLETTER

I hope this newsletter finds all of you and your families doing well. Summer has definitely arrived and we are feeling its heat. I hope that all of you had a nice 4th of July Holiday and that if you were home that you were able to spend some quality time with your family and friends.

I had the opportunity and pleasure to spend some time in Nogales and El Paso at the end of June and first part of July. While I was there we were able to cater in some food and cold drinks to start the celebration for our 50 Year Anniversary. It

was great to see a bunch of you at the two locations and I look forward to seeing some of you throughout the rest of the year.

While our official anniversary date is August 1st we wanted to get the celebration started early and we will extend it through Driver Appreciation week of this year. Driver Appreciation Week is September 14th through 20th. You all will notice that within the next couple of weeks we are sending out a package to each of your homes with some items for our 50th Anniversary as well as Driver Appreciation Week.

With regard to the 50th Anniversary of DHT, it is hard to believe that time has gone by so fast. While I wasn’t even born 50 years ago, I have been around for 46 years, and can remember a lot of the earlier years of DHT. There have been times where there have been a lot of trials and tribulations, but there have been a lot of rewarding times as well. I want to thank all of you for what you do at DHT. Without a good team and good people we as a company cannot make it work. Even today there are times when we all have our challenges. The customer cancels a load, we have a tire blow out on the trailer, an accident creates a traffic jam or delay, etc. There are a multitude of things that can happen every in our work life or personal life, but the fact is we have to continue to move forward in all areas of life. I guess that’s why they call it life and that we have the saying that Stuff Happens!! The nice thing about working with a good team of people is that we have someone to work with and watch out for us when those challenging days and issues happen.

In closing, I again want to thank all of you for what you do for DHT. We cannot do it without you. Be safe out there and many safe miles to all of you.

May God bless each of you and your family!

Keep on Trucking Safely!!!

Joe Herman -

Faith in the FutureJoe Herman got his start in the trucking business very early in life. Before he was even old enough to enroll in school he had already unofficially logged a lot of miles riding on the dog house and in Danny Herman’s lap behind the wheel of a 1967 Kenworth and later a 1972 Peterbilt. When asked about those early years, Joe smiles as he reminisces about the miles traveled listening to 8 Track tapes of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams.

Joe Herman officially began his employment with Danny Herman Trucking, Inc. in April of 1982. He began working in the shop, sweeping, greasing trucks, and in later years learned to rebuild some engines, transmissions and rear ends. Although Joe often requested to make a trip or go with one of the drivers, he was told “you’re not going to drive one until you know what makes one work”. The expectation to learn the mechanics of the trucks was carried through to other aspects of the company as well. The summer before his senior year of high school, Joe worked in Operations in Dispatch. Dispatchers and former truckers, Dick Jenkins and Terry Pardue were an invaluable resource as Joe learned this component of the business.

After a couple of years at East Tennessee State University, Joe realized that the confines of the college classroom were not as appealing to him as the road. Joe notes that he remembers as a boy how hard it was to watch his father leave the family behind while he took a run in order to make a living. “When I had to start kindergarten it kind of screwed up my trucking days.” The decision to leave ETSU made way for the opportunity for Joe to become a team driver. He spent a year on the road and was finally able to experience the “driver’s life” from the other side of the steering wheel.

After Joe came off the road he spent a couple of years working in the Safety Department at the Mountain City Terminal, but a move to El Paso soon became a very important goal. Joe felt very strongly that he could more effectively learn the business if he were working out of the busiest terminal and could be near more drivers. But that wasn’t the only reason Joe wanted to go to El Paso; there was a sweet employee at the Nogales Terminal named Lucia who had captured his attention. Every weekend for about a year was spent making the 350 mile trip to Nogales and back, until the two were married. After living in El Paso for about year and a half, the couple moved with their first-born son to Tennessee. The next few years for Danny Herman Trucking, Inc. were very innovative and progressive. In 1996 they refocused their efforts back to the freight division. DHT hired and appointed key employees to oversee strategic areas of the company. Joe was appointed President of the company in September of that year. With a new management team in place and a clearly defined Vision for the company drafted, DHT began to see even more growth that it had in years past. Joe’s leadership marked a new commitment to training, team building and empowerment. The company experienced significant growth in sales and a need for a sales office in Monterrey, Mexico became evident. In 1999, the Company was sold to Joe and his sister, Kristy. Later in 2006, Joe bought out the company from Kristy, becoming sole-owner.

To date, there are 335 trucks in DHT’s fleet. Joe’s goal is to have 350 by the end of 2014, and increase the fleet to 650 trucks in the next 10 years. He believes this can be achieved by increasing a little at a time, so as not to

lose the personal touches or values that DHT holds dear. He also understands that we are in the people business and that the drivers are the hub of our company. Every employee is appreciated and that is part of what makes the company successful.

“The good Lord has blessed us for a lot of years, and I pray He will for years to come. He has blessed us with lots of good people and good relationships. Thank you to everyone, employees, DHT family, my family, Mom and Dad.” Joe says the success of this company rests upon the solid foundation that his mother and father built 50 years ago. The company was established with a strong work ethic, faith, belief in one another, his father’s vision, honesty, integrity, and the core values that were always and are still non-negotiable. The continued success is a product of the efforts of many; a strong Leadership Team and employees who are family-oriented team-players working together to carry DHT into the future.

Joe believes the Danny Herman Trucking legacy will live on for many years down the road. The foundation his mother and father built, as well as everyone that has been involved with the company at one time or another is what makes this legacy present today. His faith and his family are his dearest things, and he attempts to display that in his everyday walk. Joe intends to maintain the standards and core values that the company was built on, and he states, “If we do the right thing, with the right intentions, and keep our integrity, I believe the good Lord will bless us. But we have to do our part. We have to work for it.”

Freight Continues to Be Strong in Most Parts of the CountryAs we approached the 50th anniversary of DHT, I started to reflect on the people and memories that have been a part of this great company through the years. I have been lucky enough to share 19 of these years and even looking back over that short time period it is amazing how far we have come. I remember setting a milestone to have 70 trucks dispatched at one time and getting pizza when we accomplished this. Now we have many days where we have 4 times as many trucks dispatched. As DHT has grown, I have noticed that the family atmosphere has only grown stronger. It takes a lot more work these days to know everyone and keep this family environment, but I know that from the top down, we strive to do this every day. Times change, but at the core, DHT has remained the same.

As we move through the summer, freight continues to be strong in most parts of the country. We did experience a couple of weeks that were slower than normal right around the 4th of July but have since got back to normal. All indications are that the economy will continue to grow, although slowly, for the short term future. We expect to outpace the national growth here a DHT due to our employees and the advantage they provide us.

From an equipment standpoint, we continue to add new trucks and trailers to the fleet. As we are adding trailers we are also trading off the older models to prevent breakdowns on the road for all our drivers. We will continue to cycle new trucks and trailers into the Fleet for the remainder of this year.

In closing I want to congratulate all of our employees, past and present, and especially the Herman family on such a great

accomplishment. It is rare that a company survives for 50 years and makes it through multiple generations. This would not have been possible without the core values that were there from day one and all the people that have worked hard to make DHT a success. Congratulations to the Herman family and everyone who has had a part in the success of DHT!

Sales Department Looking for Driver Friendly FreightWhat an exciting time in history to be part of the Danny Herman Trucking family as we approach a major mile-stone in our company! On, August 1, 2014, we celebrated 50 years of service in the transportation industry!

I have been blessed and fortunate to be a servant and leader with the company for over 11 years, and I’m looking forward to many more as we roll into a 10 year vision Joe Herman has laid out!

Things remain to look strong and business is trending upward over the next several years. Our key focus in the Sales Department is finding the best driver-friendly freight out there! This will keep our drivers on the road and them rolling with minimal dwell or down time. This benefits EVERYONE in the company.

I hope your summer has been a good one and you have run hard as well as taken some time to relax and kick-back with friends and family.

Please stay alert and be safe, allowing yourself time to rest so you will be ready to roll when your next dispatch comes across. It is ap-proaching that time of the year is some areas when kids are starting back to school so be extra careful and aware of your surroundings to keep everyone safe.

Take care and may God continue to bless you and your family greatly!

A Savings And Investment StrategyIt is possible to retire comfortably. But it takes more than just setting a contribution level and picking your funds when you first sign up for your retirement plan. Depending on your individual situation, you may need to increase your savings rate or adjust your asset allocation – and do so on a regular basis.

With Mainspring Managed, we take care of that for you. We’ll build you a personalized Savings and Investment Plan that takes into account more than just the

year you plan to retire. It’s a comprehensive look at your individual situation, including your current

account balance, annual salary increases and inflation, among other factors.

From there, we’ll make sure that your portfolio and savings rates are in line

with your goals, and we’ll review your account quarterly to help keep you on track to meet them. We can

also make automatic contribution increases, if appropriate.

Hello to everyone & Happy 50th Anniversary DHT!

WESTERN REGIONIt seems like just a few years back that I was headed west bound on I-10 going to California, approaching the town of Benson, AZ, when I heard on my CB radio that the authorities were holding an owner/operator there because of an issue with his Permits and Authority, that he had or didn’t have. In those days I was an owner/operator myself, hauling cattle and produce for 10 years or so. What I remember specifically about that report was that there were others doing the same thing I was doing, who believed in taking a stand for a belief and basic rights!

It would be a few years down the road until I would meet that guy, whom I’ve told many times since then, that it gave me a feeling of pride [that day] to know that taking a stand wasn’t out dated or something that no one ever did anymore. That “guy” was Danny Herman, and he can tell you “the rest of the story”.

I start this article with a memory from the past because it reflects on and gives a quick

reflection on one of hundreds of things that this company, and family, has endured through the past 50 years to survive and to still be growing on a successful path. Most all of us use the expression of still being a family-owned business with family values, and we even advertise it. We do this because we are truly proud that we can be part of the DHT legacy, but also because it is becoming a rare thing in this industry. Lots of things and conditions through the years have caused many family-owned businesses to disappear, and as that happens we try harder to insure that what we do in each of our jobs, will keep this business here for many years to come.

My message in this article is to acknowledge how difficult it has been, and still is to survive in the transportation industry. We also know that we have obstacles every day that cause delays, downtime and other issues for our drivers and customers as well, but all of that is part of the recipe and routine, and “it’s what we do”. How we manage and run DHT dictates

the report card we receive from all that we serve, and believe me it isn’t easy, and we don’t always get A’s.

We want to THANK EVERYONE that supports our company because it’s each of you that actually take DHT into its future! For myself, I’m glad and humbled that I was fortunate enough to come across Barbara and Danny back in 1984 or earlier. Their same beliefs and determination lives on in their son Joe, whom we work with/for today. We will do our best to achieve Joe’s next 10 year vision.

To mark the 50th Anniversary, Danny Herman Trucking held a Celebration Symposium on Friday, August 1, 2014 at Holiday Inn in Bristol, Virginia. Guest speakers along with members of DHT’s Leadership Team included Mark Mendel and Brenndan Zang from Kenworth, Glenn Spiking and Mark Holloway from Lockton Companies, Gary Holbrook from Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services, Dave McAuley, Founder and Presi-dent of Summit Leadership, and Dan Baker, People Motivation and Utilization Expert. The Symposium was followed by the 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner, during which Reflections of the Past 50 Years were shared by Danny Herman, Barbara H. Seals, and Joe Herman. We would like to thank all of the individuals who were able to attend, but an even bigger thank you goes to those who were still on the road keeping the company and America moving, because without you none of this would be possible.

Congratulations to Steve Frantz, Director of Safety, for being named Tennessee Trucking Association “Safety Person of the Year”. This is an honor not only for Steve, but for DHT as well, because it represents the efforts of everyone within company to achieve safety standards worthy of such an award.

We would like to say welcome to all the new Drivers! We would also like to welcome Shane Walker who has joined us as a Mechanic in the Mountain City Shop.

Nogales, AZ / Fontana, CA

El Paso, TX

I want to start off by congratulating DHT on its 50th anniversary. Thanks to the Herman family for all their sacrifice and hard work. Summer is in full swing down in the Southwest. Please make sure to keep yourselves well hydrated and as cool as possible. As all of you know our Monsoon storms can come on suddenly and with great intensity, so please stay safe out there. I want to remind everyone to please run your trailers through our inspection bay before dropping it in our yard. Even though we now have our local driver to help with these, having these inspections done at the time the trailer arrives in our yard saves a great deal of time. This will allow him to get even more deliveries done especially on Mondays when the trailer count can be significant.

First of all we wanted to thank our drivers for the phenomenal work each and every one of you do here at DHT.

As far as freight going out of El Paso, we’ve been pretty busy and steady. We are projecting to continue the same way for the next few months until December/January when it usually slows down a bit. I want to remind you to keep bringing a certified scale ticket for any load that is being t-called in El Paso that is ending in a different city. We want to clarify that whenever you’re bringing in a local delivery into El Paso, we don’t require you to bring a scale ticket, unless of course you want to get one for your own peace of mind. El Paso, just like Nogales and Laredo, is a border town. Most of our inbound freight

I also want to ask for your help in giving us accurate ETAs to shipper when leaving with a load. We have had several requests from our customers to cut down on the number of rescheduled appointments we request. Once you leave with a load please confirm that it does have a set appointment time. If it does not, please contact us. As always, thank you all for your help. I would also like to ask you to help us welcome Eric de la Ossa who is the newest addition to DHT Nogales team. Eric will be with us in Operations, so please stop by and say hello. Stay safe, hope to see you soon.

goes into Mexico, and we have certain procedures in place for trailers that are dropped at consignees (interchange agreement forms/receipt of equipment forms). With this being said, I would highly suggest anyone coming into El Paso with a local delivery to check-in with us (El Paso dispatch) for advice on what to do with your particular local delivery. While we try to utilize our local drivers as much as possible to deliver local loads, but there will be times when we ask you to deliver your own load (local delivery) to protect service.Once again, thank you for the hard work you ladies and gentlemen put out for DHT! Make a Plan... Then Make Another

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

“Building discipline, earning respect, and overcoming adversity are all parts of a winning game plan. All of us dream about a better future with the hope that our dreams may come true. In order to pursue our dreams, we make a plan and work our plan so we can experience that future. But what do you do when your plans are interrupted by circumstances? How do we respond when things like the loss of a job or a severe health issue interferes with pursuing our dreams? Giving up on your plan is one option, but if you don’t have a plan, where are you going?

Plans often change because things happen which can derail them. All that means is that you have to develop a new plan. The people who do that best are the ones who have learned discipline and the ability to overcome adversity through plans which haven’t worked so well. So make

your plan, anticipate changes, and push on toward your goals. In the end, you’ll realize your dreams when you finally get to where you’re going. If you can use some help navigating through life’s interruptions, be sure to connect with your chaplain. That’s what we’re here for.

Daniel CookVP of Maintenance

We have some important news that affects everyone.By the time you read this, most of the drivers and staff inside the walls will know that Scott Wemhoff has taken another job with a different company. Scott has been a key player in the Maintenance Department for many

years. We want to wish Scott the very best in his future endeavors; we will miss him! I want everyone to rest assured the maintenance team will continue to provide the best service possible to you, the driver and our customers. Any concerns should be directed to Daniel Cook in Mountain City.

In other news, we are still getting new trucks and trailers every month so hit your fleet manager up for that new ride.

A/C season has been pretty good to us this year due to some changes in the program and the influx of new trucks. We have had some A/C compressor issues on the 2014 T680 trucks at the 150,000 mile range. Kenworth is working with us to correct this issue.

We also have a recall on the power inverters in the 2015 trucks put into service after May 15 of 2014. Thermo King will be sponsoring a replacement for all the units affected starting Aug 11. We will be replacing all the units at DHT shops. Your truck will be notified if there is a problem.

In closing, it is time to start thinking of colder weather and all that comes with it. When you go home grab that extra coat and start looking for the change. Most of all, be safe and run hard. As always the Maintenance door is open 24-7 and we appreciate the opportunity to serve all of you.

What’s Happening in Logistics

New Trucks and Trailers On The Way

The market continues to stay strong. We are seeing steady volumes and more new customers coming on board. All good signs things remain heading the right direction.

I have been reading articles recently in regards to the capacity shortage that is looming our industry. It has been reported vehicle utilization rates along with responses to questions regarding a fleet’s capacity vs. demand indicate that there is little available capacity for new freight. Capacity is primarily controlled by the inability of fleets to grow due to the difficulty of hiring qualified drivers. As this remains a vital issue in the industry, this means we have to continue to up our game and be a “go to” company for our carriers and do everything we can to be the kind of partner they’re looking for.

I was fortunate to be able to attend the 50th Anniversary Celebration this month in Bristol, VA. What a great milestone and wonderful event the symposium and dinner were. It is amazing to see and hear all the history that has help mold the type of company DHT and DHTL has become today. Many thanks to the Herman family and everyone at DHT and DHTL for making this such a great place to call home. Here’s to another 50 years!!

Stay Safe everyoneand may God continue to bless you and your families.

The problems have been minimal and we get fewer phone calls every day. The biggest issue we are still having is when you are at a customer waiting to load or unload and you run out of hours and the customer will not or does not have room for you to stay at their facility. We are working on that situation with our customers through our Sales Department to see if there is a solution. I will advise all of you on our progress as it develops.

Stay Safe out There, Steve Frantz

CSA UPDATESo far I would say it has been a good summer. We have had a few periods of stormy weather but all in all it hasn’t been too bad. However, it is August and summer will be giving way to the fall season soon. Remember that all the kids are now back in school so watch for children and buses.

I have gotten our CSA update and I am glad to report that our score in “Unsafe Driving” has declined by 4.8% to 54%. Good job everyone! However, since that update we have had 3 drivers receive citations for speeding and that could raise our score back up on the next update the beginning of September. This is an area that we need to pay more attention to and make sure everyone is doing the right things.

As a result of our current score in “Unsafe Driving” I am working on a new policy for driver violations in regards to unsafe acts. I should have

the policy completed by the end of August and out to all drivers. This new policy will be put on the DHT University and assigned to all drivers. You will need to sign-in and read the policy, and then answer only one question, which confirms that you have read and understand the new policy that is in place. If you need help signing-in please contact the Safety Department and Dawn or I will help you.

All of our other scores are looking good! The HOS score keeps going down month after month and I contribute that to the E-Logs. We have now dropped to 48%! We have not been at this level or below since July 2011! As you know, most of our violations were for “last change of duty status” and “form & manner error”. We did not have any issues with the 11, 14 or 70 hour rules just the not current and paperwork errors in which the E-logs have corrected both. We should see that category reduced to nothing over the next several months.

UNIVERSITYAs all of you know there are videos being assigned every month for you to sign in and view. These videos must be completed in order to receive any quarterly safety bonus that you may have coming. Each month I will be assigning 3 to 5 videos depending on how long they are. I am trying to keep the total time of the videos to no more than 30 – 40 minutes combined. Most of the videos are from 3 – 12 minutes long with a short quiz that follows. I am also using the videos for drivers that need re-training due to accidents, citations or other issues where necessary. Any videos assigned for the purpose of re-training would be in addition to the regularly assigned monthly videos; they would not serve as a replacement.

These videos can be viewed on a smart phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. If you do not have one of these devices or are in areas where the signal for the Internet is weak and can’t watch the videos, we have a tablet at each terminal that can be used for the training. There is also someone at each terminal that can help you get signed-in if you need help.

I am including the instruction sheet in this e-mail to help you get on the DHT University.

Thank you all. Please keep up the good work and drive safe.Steve Frantz

Workplace InjuriesYour safety and well-being are very important to us, and although you may strive to keep yourself and others safe on your jobs, workplace injuries do occur. When this happens to you, we want to make sure that you get the very best care! In order for that to happen, there are specific regulations set by OSHA that must be followed.

If an injury occurs that is severe and life threatening, call 9-1-1 immediately! Otherwise, call your supervisor, dispatch, Human Resources or Safety to report the injury. If you need immediate medical attention, an authorization can be sent to any urgent care or doctor’s office. Our goal is to make it as easy on you as possible. If you did not speak with Human Resources, you will need to follow up with us that day, so that we can get the pertinent details for your First Report of Injury that OSHA requires.

If you have an injury that does not require medical attention, we still need you to call and report it. We still must fill out a First Report of Injury, gathering all pertinent information needed, per OSHA, to do a report. Even if the injury seems minor to you, call us anyway and let us know. In no way, shape or form does this “look bad” on your record. Please don’t hesitate to call or think that you will be bothering us. We are here for you!
