PRESIDENTS REPORT This year has kicked off with a hiss and a roar and I can hardly believe we’re already at the end of February and it’s one year on since the devastating Christchurch earthquakes. For most of us here in Wellington, life has moved on but we haven’t forgotten. Our thoughts are still with the people of Christchurch. We have had a few people move into the area, choosing to leave Christchurch temporarily or permanently, so I’d like to take the chance to extend an extra warm welcome to those families. We hope Johnsonville/Churton Park and its people have made you feel welcome and at home. Annual Appeal fever is in full swing and is happening during the week of 5-11 March. Plunket’s Appeal raises vital funds for a wide variety of services, such as parenting education courses, car seat safety schemes, educa-tion in schools, toy libraries and many other valuable resources and programmes. Specifically the Johnsonville/ Churton Park area also includes services like the Family Centre, breastfeeding clinics and sleep clinics. We are lucky to have one of only two family centres in the Wellington area. These services rely heavily on community support to keep going. Last year the Plunket Annual Appeal - which is our major fundraiser for the year - was called off because it just didn’t feel right to ask people for donations when Christchurch clearly needed it a whole lot more. As we had already organised a cake stall for the appeal, we decided to go ahead with it and donate the money to purchase pepi-pods for families in Christchurch. A pepi-pod is a general purpose storage box that converts to a baby sized bed with the addition of an attractive cover, fitting mattress and bedding. It offers babies a safe space when they sleep in, or on, an adult bed, on a couch, in a makeshift setting, or away from home. These are situations with a higher risk of accidental suffocation for babies. As a result of Annual Appeal being cancelled though, not only our local branch of Plunket, but most of Plunket did it tough financially with many of us running a deficit last year. For this reason it is especially important that our Annual Appeal is a big success this year. To make this happen we have the following ways by which you can donate to us:

1. By purchasing your fuel and/or other goodies from Z Energy (previously Shell) fuel station in Johnson-

ville until the end of March. For every transaction you will receive a token which you can then drop

into the token collection box for Johnsonville Plunket. We are competing with three other (also de-

serving) charities for $5000. We won’t complain if you put a little bit of fuel in your car each time you

drive past it! ;-)

2. By donating your coins (or notes if you feel generous) to one of the Annual Appeal collectors that will

be knocking on your door during Annual Appeal week.

3. By donating online. We have a link (identical to the picture below) on our website

www.johnsonvilleplunket.org.nz that will take you to our online collection bucket

4. By becoming an online collector for Johnsonville Plunket. It is quick and easy to get set up and all

funds collected will come straight to Johnsonville Plunket, provided you choose us as the entity you

are collecting for. Instructions are enclosed further on in the newsletter.

5. By dropping some coins in our collection bucket at Johnsonville Mall on Thursday 8th March. You will

see some volunteers by a table which will be clearly marked with some Plunket signage.

6. By giving a gold coin donation or buying a sausage from the sausage sizzle at our Little Plunket picnic

being held on Sunday 11th March at 10:30 at the Churton Park play area (more details inside the news-

letter).

7. By shaking a bucket for Plunket for an hour or two in town on Friday 9th March. If you specify you are

from Johnsonville Plunket, some of the money collected in town will come towards Johnsonville

Plunket too.

www.johnsonvilleplunket.org.nz www.facebook.com/JohnsonvillePlunket

Additionally you can also help us collect door to door. We are still short of collectors and the more streets we cover, the better our chances of collecting more money. What we collect stays in our local area and supports our Pin groups, Breastfeeding Clinic, Sleep Clinic and Family Centre services. A little of your time goes a long way! Last but not least we have our quality Second Hand sale on Saturday 24th March from 9:30am-11:30am at the Johnsonville Community Centre. Come along and pick up some bargains, or drop in for a coffee and a slice of something yummy. We will be holding another sale in July, with the July sale being the last one of the year and tables for this still available. We have decided to not have a September sale this year to make room for a movie night fundraiser instead. There are quite a few sales around the area that time of year, so you won’t be missing out! I’m hoping that you will be able to support us in one way or another. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has already volunteered their time or donated money, making it possible to sustain the valu-able services we provide to our community. I’ll leave you with a quote from the motivational corner: “An act of kindness which for you takes a little bit of effort, can change the life of another human being.”

Until next time, Sandra

NURSES REPORT

The summer has been reasonably busy baby-wise, with 20 new babies in December; 24 in January; and 16 for February (as of 25 February).

Remember that we are running sleep clinics every 1st, 3rd and last Wednesday of the month at Johnsonville Plunket rooms. Clinics have been split into separate sessions for babies under 3 months old, and babies over that up until 12 months. Registrations are now also required to keep the groups at a manageable number. For bookings please call Tuesdays and Wednesdays on 478-4900.

We still have our Breastfeeding Clinic running on Mondays between 1pm and 4pm. You are more than welcome to make an appointment to attend this clinic for any concerns with breastfeeding. Ring us on 478 4900 to book. As we said last time, we appreciate that sometimes life gets busy and for whatever reason you may be unable to make a pre-scheduled appointment with us. Currently we are often unable to reschedule you for another 2 weeks, as that is how far out we are booked. So please be patient! Cathy and Margareta

Z ENERGY are Supporting JOHNSONVILLE PLUNKET!

This is the EASIEST way to help Johnsonville Plunket financially - without taking a single cent out of your own pocket!! We have been chosen as one of the four charities for the new Z Energy service station in Johnsonville (the old Shell service station), which opened on 22 February. To celebrate the opening of each of their new service stations, Z are donating $5,000 to neighbourhood groups. For the next four weeks, every time you have a transaction at Z they will give you a token to put in one of the charities’ boxes.(We’re the box second from the left – see the photo). The proportion of tokens at the end of the month determines who will get that percentage of that $5000.

Buy your petrol at Z and place your token in the Plunket box – we won’t complain if you buy petrol in $10 lots!!!

pin groups

Plunket in Your Neighbourhood (PIN) groups aim to provide an avenue for mums and caregivers to informally meet other mums and caregivers of babies around the same age. PIN groups can be a great support network as they allow you to make new friendships and discuss what your babies are doing at various stages of their life. Lasting friendships are created, with many PIN groups still going when the children start school. Johnsonville Plunket runs a number of PIN groups – what group is for you? PIN Groups 1st Time Parents – Coordinator: Nicola Hay

The first time PIN group is a great way to meet other new mums in your area with similar aged babies. This group is especially important when you've been working full time and suddenly find yourself at home with a new baby! Plunket organise the first three catch ups to help build your network. Then we provide contact details for your group and encourage you to carry on meeting. Because all the babies are a similar age, you'll find everyone is going through the same stages at similar times and that can be a big support. PIN Groups Young Mums - Coordinator: Dani Petterd

The Young Mums group runs every Friday from 10-11:30am at the Johnsonville Plunket Rooms, The age range of our kids are right from birth till three years old. Anyone is welcome. Contact Dani on 477 6288 or 0278432122. She looks forward to meeting any new ladies that would like to come along. PIN Groups Chinese Parents - Coordinator: Lisa Liu

Johnsonville Plunket welcomes all Chinese speaking parents and grandparents of children from birth to 5 years to our monthly coffee group at the Johnsonville Community Centre on the first Friday of the month. Tea and coffee is provided, but please bring food along for your own children. PIN Groups 2nd/3rd Time Parents - Coordinator: Liz Kemp

As with the first time PIN groups, the second time groups has Plunket organise the first three catch ups, then the group is encouraged to carry on meeting. While all the babies are of a similar age, there may be elder children of slightly differing ages which can create an interesting and fun dynamic! PIN Groups for solo mums – Coordinator: Nila Sukha

We have recently set up a group for mums who are doing it on their own. The next meeting will be on Satur-day 3 March, 10am-12pm. If you’re interested, please email [email protected]. PIN Groups for dads – Is there interest?

We’re currently looking at whether there is interest in starting a Dad’s PIN group, given a number of Dad’s that are staying at home during the formative years. If you are interested in this, please email [email protected] and note “Dad’s PIN group” in the subject line.

DO YOU HAVE A TODDLER-IN-TOW?

The website http://www.toddlerintow.co.nz/ is a very handy one-stop-shop which was designed by Porirua mum Kelly Eteveneaux. While set up to help Porirua parents stay in "the know" about all there is on offer for their preschoolers, it’s a very handy site for Johnsonville and Churton Park parents also. Kelly notes that there are “so many different activities to take your children to, music classes, kindy gym, swimming lessons, coffee groups and more, it's just a matter of knowing what is on, when and where.” Her site certainly helps identify things to do and is well worth a look!!!

HOW TO BUILD A BUG HOTEL

Give your child a place to let their critter friends rest, yet keep your house safe from spiders, bugs and worms. Get your little bug collector to work making and decorating a bug hotel for all of their favourite creepy, crawly friends.

When summer ends, have all the good bugs hang around over winter in your bug hotel! You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to make and how many of the materials you already have lying around your home and garden. All you need is a steady hand to pile them up! Made of recycled materials, bug hotels replicate natural features sought by wildlife in your garden - particularly by invertebrates such as earwigs, slaters, ladybirds, native cockroaches, tree wetas and mason wasps, all bugs which help control less welcome visitors. You can make your stack as large or as small as you wish, but be creative and provide lots of nooks and crannies using the materials at your disposal. GETTING STARTED Choose a level, firm site in the sunlight or light shade - most invertebrates prefer moist areas of dappled shade. Find somewhere easily visible, perhaps close to a hedge, shrub bed or pond. Arrange some bricks on the ground on their side. If you have those with holes in them, face the holes outwards. If not, butt a pair of bricks together side by side and leave a small gap before the next pair. Try creating ‘H’ shaped cells of bricks and fill the space between with woodchips and leaf litter. Lay a wooden pallet or strips of wood across the top of your bricks and then construct the next level in the same way. Remember to fill the gaps with your materials like hay, straw, dry leaf litter and wood chippings. Straw will provide nesting sites for ladybirds and thin twigs will provide shelter for larger insects. Place another pallet across the top and repeat. Logs and pine cones will provide extra homes for all sorts of insects. Keep your stack dry with roof tiles or a sheet of board covered in roofing felt or polythene. On top of this, place crushed brick rubble, concrete or limestone chippings and plant with sedum or other low growing drought tolerant plants.

WHAT YOU NEED

The following list is for guidance only - and is in no way exhaustive.

Pallets, or strips of wood Cardboard tubes and corrugated card Straw, hay, dry leaf litter and moss Crushed brick and concrete rubble Plant pots Plastic and ceramic pipes of various diameter Roofing felt Bricks and concrete blocks, preferably with holes Stones Roof tiles Hollow bamboo canes Dead hollow stems cut from shrubs and herbaceous plants Pinecones Logs drilled with various sized holes Succulent plants Sand

Once you have made your hotel put it in a quiet corner of the garden - preferably somewhere in the shade. As the nights start getting colder, bugs will find your hotel and use it as a safe dry place to hibernate.

A WORD FROM WARDROBE FLAIR

CLOTHING CHALLENGES FOR 2012 Already we are a few months into the new year and, before we become complacent, it is time to rethink our resolutions and set some goals. I have six clothing challenges to encourage your clothing confidence for 2012. 1. De-clutter your wardrobe. Get it all out, every last scarf, belt, piece of clothing. Lay it on the bed. Become horrified by how much stuff you have, then be ruthless in getting rid of anything you haven't worn in 12 months. 2. Be determined to learn what colours suit you, either by listening to compliments or by hiring someone to come and teach you. 3. Accept what shape and size you are right now. Dress for your size, shape and age accordingly. All people, irrespective of size or shape can look fantastic. Accept where you are right now, focus on looking good NOW instead of hoping for happiness and promising to make that effort after you loose 5, 10,15, 20kg! 4. Buy less and use what you already have more. Don't get stuck in that style rut of wearing that same skirt or trousers with that same top. Find another combination. Add a different accessory. 5. Wear colours and patterns that scare you. Team them with safe colours you feel ok in so you can ease into it. By jumping in with colour and patterns you will receive lots of compliments, which will help your confi-dence levels rise. 6. Always accessorise. Adding a scarf, belt, necklace, earrings, bracelet, funky shoes or coloured bag can make an simple outfit stylist. Don't be scared of using bold accessories. Bring colour up near your face. Nip your waist in with a belt. All these little finishing touches make the world of difference in an easy and inexpen-sive way. Challenge yourself to become more confident and always, always, wear the most important thing you can - a big, genuine smile.

To see a stylist from Wardrobe Flair costs $199 for two hours. This includes your colours, body-shape analyses, wardrobe re-vamp, shopping list, colour chart and consultation summary. Shopping trips are $95 per hour. We do second-hand and mainstream shopping. “This service costs the same as couple of pieces of clothing you bought and never wore”. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN! This is the first in a regular column of great ideas for getting your little Masterchef in the kitchen!! (And, with an eye to the future, getting you out!!!) The following article is taken from the Healthy Food Guide website, http://www.healthyfood.co.nz/

ADVICE FOR PARENTS ON GETTING KIDS INTO THE KITCHEN

Teaching kids to cook is one of the best investments in their health you can make. It takes time, is often messy, and can require the patience of a saint, but kids love to cook and cooking with them can be a lot of fun. There are other benefits, too:

You spend time with your children and develop your relationship while giving them the parental attention they need.

You teach them the skills they need to be healthy independent adults. This will mean they won’t have to rely on fast food and convenience foods when they leave home.

Kids are more likely to eat and enjoy foods they have made or contributed to. Cooking can be a great way to expand their food repertoire.

Cooking involves a whole range of other important skills including decision making, research, reading, mathematics, co-ordination, teamwork, time management and creativity.

Cooking boosts children's self esteem and helps them feel they are contributing to the family. It fosters an appreciation and love of food and a better understanding of nutrition. You may reap the rewards when your kids are older – they may take over some of the cooking. You are building memories – think back to the dishes you remember from your childhood!

WHAT TO DO AT WHAT AGE

0-1 years Sit the baby where they can see you cooking. Talk to them about the food and show them what you are doing. While they may not understand, they are forming pictures of what is normal for Mummy or Daddy to do.

1-3 years Involve them as much as possible in what you are doing. Give them plastic bowls, wooden spoons, plastic sets of cutters and play dough to play with. As they get older and their motor skills get better, let them stand on a chair and pour ingredients you have measured into a bowl. They can also help clear the table by removing place mats and napkins.

3-5 years Pre-schoolers can spread margarine, peanut butter or jam using a blunt knife. They can tear up lettuce for a salad, stir the contents of a bowl, wash fruit and vegetables and help mash potatoes. They can also help set the table.

5-10 years School-aged kids can use hand egg beaters, whisks and sifters. They can measure ingredients and mix them in the right order. Since their reading skills are improving, they can start to read recipes – this is a good time to buy a kids’ cookbook. Close supervision of all food preparation will still be necessary.

10+ years

Kids have sufficient motor and co-ordination skills to start chopping, peeling, grating and to use the stove. Some supervision may be necessary to start with, but this will get less as they get older. They should now be able to set the table by themselves and help with meal service. Encourage older children to plan and prepare a meal totally by themselves.

KEEP IT SAFE

When you are teaching young children to cook it is important to set some rules and reinforce them rigorously. This will establish good habits for life.

www.johnsonvilleplunket.org.nz www.facebook.com/JohnsonvillePlunket

Wash hands before starting and as needed during food preparation. Use soapy water and lather for

about 20 seconds before rinsing and drying (with a clean towel). Start by reading the recipe thoroughly. Gather all the equipment needed before starting. Keep the work area tidy. When finished with equipment or utensils, get them out of the way by

stacking beside the sink. Wear an apron and keep long hair tied back. Wear shoes in the kitchen (covered-in shoes are best). When using the cook top, use back elements rather than front elements and make sure pot handles

are turned away from the front. Use pot holders when handling anything hot and take great care. Use pot stands when standing hot

pans on the bench or table. Be careful with knives, graters and anything sharp. Don’t place these in a sink full of soapy water as

someone could get cut when reaching in. Take care tasting food – use a clean spoon and don’t double dip. Don’t nibble and lick while cooking

and take care if tasting food items that are hot. Don’t taste uncooked food as it could contain harmful bacteria.

Clean up after cooking. That means wiping up spills, cleaning the cook top, putting ingredients away, putting utensils and bowls in the dishwasher and washing up pots and pans.

CHICKEN BURRITOS (from the Healthy Food Guide) With a can of chilli beans in the cupboard, you've got the makings for a Mexican culinary fiesta! Step 1: Heat oil in a frying pan. Add chicken and cook, stirring all the time. Add beans and cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes. Be sure to stir to stop it sticking to the bottom of the pan. Step 2: Warm tortillas in microwave (or wrap in foil and heat for 5 minutes in oven at 170ºC). Lay them flat on a board or bench and divide chicken mixture among them. Spread mixture out in a rectangle in the middle of each tortilla, then top with shredded lettuce, spring onions and cheese. Step 3: Fold into a rectangular parcel. Decorate with salsa. Serve.
