32PROJECT PROPOSAL-1 : AGRICULTURE CONSULTATION CENTRE

AIM OF THE PROPOSALTo Promote Integrated Farm Management System• Integrated Farming System (IFS) tries to look deeper into this crisis,

particularly of the small family farms falling in between the modernand primitive production systems.

• Integrated farming is a system which tries to imitate the nature’sprinciple, where not only crops but, varied types of plants, animals, birds, fish and other aquatic flora and fauna are utilized forproduction. These are combined in such a way and proportion thateach element helps the other; the waste of one is recycled asresource for the other.

• The basic principle is to enhance the ecological diversity – by choosing the appropriate croppingmethodology with mixed cropping, crop rotation, crop combination and inter cropping so thatthere is less competition for water, nutrition and space and adopting eco-friendly practices.

• IFS is a labor-intensive system, thereby engaging the farmer family productively on their ownfarms, throughout the year. IFS will lead to collective efforts among the farmers like collectivepurchase of inputs and collective marketing of produce, thus reducing their costs of production.

• It takes 3-4 years to establish a good integrated farm with market linkages to ensure nutritionand livelihood of a family. When we have many such farms in the village, there will beenormous scope for employment and business opportunities, especially for the youth forselling seeds, seedlings, manures etc.

34PROJECT PROPOSAL-2 : INTEGRATED ANIMAL HUSBANDRY COMPLEX

AIM OF THE PROPOSALTo Enable Sustainable Animal Husbandry Practices• The concept of sustainable development envisages primary emphasis on manipulation and

management of physical/natural systems not only to maximize yields but to stabilize the system andto minimize use of nonrenewable input demands, thus representing an integrated approach ofappropriate modern technology with traditional techniques.

• Animal husbandry is an integral component of Indian agriculture supporting livelihood of more thantwo-thirds of the rural population. Animals provide nutrient-rich food products, draught power, dung as organic manure and domestic fuel, hides & skin, and are a regular source of cash incomefor rural households. They are a natural capital, which can be easily reproduced to act as a livingbank with offspring as interest, and an insurance against income shocks of crop failure and naturalcalamities.

• Aiming to create a self-reliant organic village, people of the village may form a cooperative societyand begin utilizing local resources for supplying cooking gas to household and bio-fertilizers and biopesticides for farming.

• Technology Village Program (an Initiative of State Government) can be utilized.

The highly dynamic livestock sector is rapidly changing in response to the ever-increasing demands of the growingpopulation. Following are the key benefits of establishing such project:• Dung production, which is of great importance for soil fertility;• Production of milk or eggs to export outside the village as well as for consumption within planning area;• Household industrial set-up through recycled by-products such as straw or kitchen waste;• Production of meat to export outside the village as well as for consumption within planning area;• May have cultural or religious significance (prestige, ceremonies, etc.); and produce young stock for breeding or
