Speaking of RCOYcompetitions, I’m writing thisletter from the Abuja airport, where I’m waiting to boardthe plane back to Lagos afterwitnessing another excitinggroup of studententrepreneurs battle torepresent their region as thebest student company at theupcoming National Companyof the Year competition. Iwas blown away by theinnovative products andservices on display, rangingfrom a group of students whohad used Zobo to develop anindicator paper that workedeven better than litmus paperin their science classes toanother group who haddeveloped a websiteconnecting farmers toconsumers across the countryand made over twelve millionnaira (yes, N12, 000,000) inrevenues in less than ninemonths!!!
JAN, in partnership withTechQuest, held fourhackathons in Ife, Nsukka,Kaduna and Uyo to findyoung tech talent to help usbuild out some major digitalinitiatives we are embarkingon ahead of our 20thanniversary next year. Over 170 teams applied, outof which 61 teams wereshortlisted, from whichemerged four winning teamsthat received cash prizes andswag from our sponsors. Theoverall winner will beselected from the final four inearly July at a ceremony inLagos and I can’t wait tobegin working with theseyoung geniuses who will helptransform JAN over the nextyear! Thank you so much toour partners for making ithappen. Earlier this month, BunmiBanjo, who heads the DigitalSkills for Africa program atGoogle reached out to ask ifwe would like to incorporatedigital skills training in ourentrepreneurial programs atsecondary schools acrossNigeria and we said aresounding “YEAH!!!”. Now we have JAN staff andGoogle trainers going fromschool to school, city to city,to conduct digital skillstraining just in time tohelp our Company Programstudents develop andimplement their digitalmarketing strategy ahead of
I AM ALSO IMMENSELY
GRATEFUL TO ALL THE
VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE
BEEN WORKING HARD TO

Finally, I would like to thankthe writers of the HarvardBusiness School (HBS)Alumni Office who featuredmy work with JuniorAchievement Nigeria in thismonth’s issue of their alumnimagazine. I spent a week in June on theHBS campus at an executiveeducation program for MBAalumni and it was reallyspecial to be presented with acopy of the magazine withthe 2-page spread (see photoabove). One of our most popularprograms, the Venture inManagement Program, isfrom HBS so I look forwardto working with the school todevelop more programs forour young entrepreneurs inNigeria. Thank you for partneringwith us to improve the livesof Nigeria’s youth.
We have had three RCOYs so far, in Lagos, Abuja and Jos, allcities in which Citi sponsors the Company Program. Next up,Ebonyi, Abia and Anambra, cities in which FirstBank sponsorsthe Company Program. Did I already mention that #WeHaveTheBestBoardMembers???In July, we will also have RCOYs in Port Harcourt (also sponsoredby Citi) and in Osogbo and Ibadan, sponsored by our newestPartner-in-Development, the ACT Foundation, the high-impactfoundation set up by Access Bank. To say we are grateful forthese high-impact partnerships would be the biggestunderstatement of the century! I am also immensely grateful to all the volunteers who have beenworking hard to teach JAN programs in schools this month –from the various alumni paying it forward as volunteers andjudges at our RCOY competitions to the corporate volunteersfrom IFC and UPS, who have partnered with us to conduct the JABe Entrepreneurial program in public secondary schools acrossLagos. I was particularly impressed by the passion displayed bythe IFC Country Manager, Eme Essien, who first served as a JAvolunteer when she worked in the United States. The girls atGbara Secondary School, Jakande, Lekki, could not bear to let goof her by the end of the program and she couldn’t let go of them!
Warm Regards,

On the 13th and 14th of June, 2018,
about 50 students from the JAN
school network participated in a 2-
day STEM Innovation Camp
organized in partnership with
Oracle and the Co-Creation Hub
(CCHub).
The camp was designed to increase
digital literacy and coding skills in
young students and is a partnership
that has run for the past three years.
This year, students were trained on
how to use SQL programming
databases to store information,
which can be used for solving
crimes and creating solutions to
problems. The students were
divided into teams and tasked with
designing frameworks for software
applications using the SQL
programming language.
The third place winners designed an
application that can help eradicate the
diversion of funds intended for
agricultural purposes. The second place
winners designed an application through
which potential JAN volunteers could sign
up and get assigned to schools to teach.
The first place winners designed a software
application that can be used by the
government and security agencies to keep
track of homeless people in the country.
With the application, families can also
track their lost family members, or adopt a
new person into their home. Facilitators
from Oracle were very impressed with the
students who in two days were able design
such brilliant solutions. We thank the
Oracle Academy for this partnership which
is in line with our goal of raising more
digitally savvy youth.
