Development at this level requires an exceptional collaboration between architects and interior designers to endow beauty, luxury and a level of service that place the buildings in a class of their own on a global scale.

New York City’s famous skyline has a new feature in the form of 432 Park Avenue (please see page 6). The creative force behind the project is famed architect Rafael Viñoly. Its elegant exterior, a perfectly proportioned framework of squares, makes a powerful and classical statement. Rafael Viñoly says, “The square is a means to an end. It conditions the generous proportions of the interiors and allows the exterior to exist beyond the particular period in which it was designed.” Viñoly continues, “The nature of urban high-rise luxury is clearly expressed in the building’s generous attitude towards space. On the skyline of New York, we wanted to make a contribution that would stand the test of time.”

Just a decade ago, only big businesses occupied the world’s tallest buildings, so it is perhaps a sign of the times that 432 Park Avenue is home to 104 meticulously designed luxury residences. The 10-foot square windows, so integral to the exterior design, command unparalleled views of the city. Alongside luxurious accommodation the private amenities available to the residents are equally opulent: massage and spa rooms, a 75-foot pool, a gym, a screening room and a private restaurant.

Most new projects like 432 lack the constraints imposed by prior work or existing buildings and the architect, interior designers and developers can begin work on a relatively blank canvas. Whereas restoring, or adapting, an existing building brings with it a quite different set of responsibilities. The project Canalejas in Madrid, where the modern luxury development is fronted by a historic façade, posed just such a challenge. The opulent residences within Canalejas will sit atop the Four Seasons Hotel and have unique access to all the hotel’s world-class amenities (please see page 73 for more information). Access to exceptional services is a key to the desirability of the apartments but so is their design. The interior of each apartment has been carefully designed by Luis Bustamante. His challenge was

to accentuate modern tastes for light and space, whilst at the same time embracing the 18th century sensibility. Originally a sculptor and painter, Bustamante’s artistic eye gives him a unique perspective on interiors from an aesthetic point of view. Luis Bustamante explains, “We seek to create warm spaces in which the ‘beat’ of a cosmopolitan and vibrant city like Madrid is acknowledged, without undermining the essence of the building. This is a historical building, and we must respect this essential aspect, creating a contemporary interior that incorporates the highest quality standards and that sits harmoniously in its surroundings.” “The façade architecture retains its classical essence, but in the rehabilitation of the building we’re trying to make modern and classical style coexist, the same happens with the interior design,” Bustamante continues, “In each project I try to learn how my clients like and wish to live, analysing their personalities but never forgetting my interior design rules of order, functionality and harmony. Basically I try to translate their dreams.” Generosity of space, volume height, proportion and natural light typify modern tastes. All design must ultimately enhance the luxury of the space and must refine and reflect the aspirations of their potential residents.

Globalisation has been at the root of changes and development in education across the world over the last 50 years with a growing number of internationally-mobile families demanding an excellent education for their children wherever they live. And globalisation is continually gathering pace powered by business, infrastructure, technology and peace.

electing a school for your children is a very personal decision influenced by both rational and irrational feelings. It is ultimately driven by the universal desire to offer your children the very best possible start in life.

Academic rigour coupled with the wider flourishing of the child is very much at the heart of what most modern parents demand but even this isn’t enough on an international level: a school needs a compelling brand and a clear link into the world’s best universities.” Will Orr-Ewing.

Independent schools across the world are energetically adapting to meet the needs of an increasingly globalised society and they are doing so with astonishing success. In Singapore schools like United World College SEA, Tanglin Trust School and ACS draw students from India and China, as well as the expat international community, because they deliver consistently superior results. Notable examples in the wider region are South Island School and Kellet School in Hong Kong and, in Malaysia the Australian International School, Marlborough College Malaysia and Tenby International.

Australia, whose school system can chart its history back to the UK, particularly appeals to Asian families, especially such schools as Geelong Grammar and Sydney Grammar School which both have strong international brands and reputations for excellence.

South Africa also derives its educational principles from the UK, and for sport, especially rugby, they are hard to beat. Emerging cities or hubs around the world, with significant international communities and concentrations of business, are looking to improve their schooling systems in order to increase their skilled work force. Dubai is a good and well-established example and further evidence of this trend can be seen in Qatar where eight new “UK Curriculum” schools are currently being built.

The USA attracts international pupils from South and Central America as well as from Europe and Asia. Choate in particular is energetically developing its global reach. At graduate level America is an undisputed world leader with intense competition, from all around the world, hoping to gain places at its top universities and colleges.

In Europe the smart, affluent cities are usually home to at least a small number of quality international schools based on either the American or British system. Geneva, Paris, Nice and Florence are good examples and Le Rosey in Switzerland has a particularly strong international brand.

The establishment of the International Baccalaureate (IB) as a rigorous, off-the-shelf curriculum serves as further evidence of a shift towards the global by both the independent and state school sectors. The IB is also recognised by top universities all around the world.

The IB was introduced in the 1960’s to cater for the growing number of internationally mobile students who wanted an education that wasn’t tied to any one government’s agenda. The organisation is still driven by an idealism that resonates today. Its mission statement reads: “The IB aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

Famous educational institutions in the UK are adapting to globalisation by energetically modernising, exporting education and building global brands. In fact, Harrow now has franchises in Hong Kong, Beijing and Bangkok. In 10 years’ time they could have more than 10 “branches” around the world.

“Alongside an increasingly international outlook schools all around the world are seeking to offer more bursaries and varied scholarships which means there will be much more mobility in the future within the school system. Today, a bright kid, regardless of background, who can pass the entrance exams, can choose their school and there is the potential for even more mobility of this sort in the future.” William Petty.

Chinese buyers are educated and truly understand the value of cultural heritage. China is also an enormous market with ambitious lifestyle expectations and possessed of one of the greatest national cuisines in the world. Great wine and great food have always walked hand in hand.” Nick Martin adds that, “we are seeing not only rises in the market but also in activity levels – where once buyers were nervous, now there is more energy and risks are being taken.
