He took his 4th (Patriotic) Degree in 1987; and is a member of Commodore John Barry Assembly #1163. There’s one thing I’d like to highlight about John’s service as a Knight. For those who’ve witnessed First (Admissions) Degree exemplifications at EDW in the last 36 years, you’ve probably seen him work. He’s been a member of our Degree Team since his first year as a Knight! Thank you, John, for 36 years as a Knight, and 36 years of playing an instrumental role in bringing new members into the Knights of Columbus, and the Edward Douglass White Council. FAMILY OF THE MONTH Our EDW Family of the Month for June 2018 was instrumental in our inaugural Derby Day Charity fundraiser. Jeff and Theresa Miller, and sons James and Joseph are parishioners of St. Ann’s and part of a strong group of young families from that parish who have become active in many ways around the council and club. Jeff joined the Knights of Columbus (and EDW) in 2014 and took his 3rd (Knighthood) Degree in March of this year. The Miller’s identified “Tracy’s Kids” as a worthy cause for our new fundraiser; and helped organize and execute a complex first-ever event without a template or script to work from. They helped us raise approximately $10K for “Tracy’s Kids” (after expenses). Congratulations, and thank you to the Miller Family!

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

This is my final message as your Grand Knight. It’s been an honor and privilege to serve you, our council, the Columbus Club, and our Order as EDW GK for Fraternal Year 2017-18. Thanks to all of you who helped me and our council in any way over the past twelve months, especially the core groups who do so much around here to keep EDW and the Columbus Club functioning – such as our club staff: Peter, Nick, Rene, Maria, and Ruth; the club Board Officers who provide governance for our facilities in their “spare” time – no small task – pro bono; our Red Coat heroes who staff so

many events for the sake of charity, Ladies UKnighted, etc. Special thanks to Club President John O’Neill III for being a true Brother Knight throughout the course of the year. We had many successes this year in regard to charitable works – the most important things we do – continuing our traditional works (Thanksgiving, KOVAR, VKCCI, etc.), but also supporting fundraisers for the Missionhurst school in Haiti, Disaster/Hurricane Relief, Jennifer Bush Lawson Family Fun Day, Christians in the Middle East, and Tracy’s Kids. Many thanks to my brother Council Officers. I look forward to continuing the work of the council as a Trustee in the coming Fraternal Year.

We’ve also done well over the past twelve months, thanks to the efforts of many, to sustain and grow the Knights of Columbus. We brought in 82 new members – 25 of those joined last month – and have one more shot to break our goal of 100. We have our final 1st (Admissions) Degree of the Fraternal Year on June 21st – so ask a Catholic man from your parish to join!

May was a busy month with our first Derby Day, Honor Flights, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, in addition to the usual busy schedule of monthly events. June will be just as busy as we have our Father/Daughter Dance on the first Sunday of the month (June 3rd, but reservations must be made by June 1st), Father’s Day (Family Breakfast), and PGK Picnic – but most importantly, the warm days and the end of the school year mean the grounds will get busy with the pool and the Deep End will be open for your enjoyment!

My final featured day from the Catholic Church calendar is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ - also known as the Feast of Corpus Christi. May the Real Presence – Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity – of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist help you to live in Him, as He lives in us!

Mary Queen of Knights – Pray for us!

THE STORY BEHIND THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, historically known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi, celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. It is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday following the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. The feast dates to the Middle Ages and

originated with a visionary nun and a Eucharistic miracle.

In 1263 a German priest, Fr. Peter of Prague, made a pilgrimage to Rome. He stopped in Bolsena, Italy, to celebrate Mass at the Church of St. Christina. At the time he was having doubts about Jesus being truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. He was affected by the growing debate among certain theologians who, for the first time in the history of the Church, began introducing doubts about the Body and Blood of Christ being actually present in the consecrated bread and wine. In response to his doubt, when he recited the prayer of consecration as he celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, blood started seeping from the consecrated host and onto the altar and corporal.

Fr. Peter reported this miracle to Pope Urban IV, who at the time was nearby in Orvieto. The pope sent delegates to investigate and ordered that host and blood-stained corporal be brought to Orvieto. The relics were then placed in the Cathedral of Orvieto, where they remain today.

This Eucharistic Miracle confirmed the visions given to St. Juliana of Mont Cornillon in Belgium (1193-1258). St. Juliana was a nun and mystic who had a series of visions in which she was instructed by Our Lord to work to establish a liturgical feast for the Holy Eucharist, to which she had a great devotion.

After many years of trying, she finally convinced the bishop, the future Pope Urban IV, to create this special feast in honor of the Blessed Sacrament, where none had existed before. Soon after her death, Pope Urban instituted Corpus Christi for the Universal Church and celebrated it for the first time in Orvieto in 1264, a year after the Eucharistic Miracle in Bolsena.

Inspired by the miracle, Pope Urban commissioned a Dominican friar, St. Thomas Aquinas, to compose the Mass and Office for the feast of Corpus Christi. Aquinas’

hymns in honor of the Holy Eucharist, Pange Lingua, Tantum Ergo, Panis Angelicus, and O Salutaris Hostia are the beloved hymns the Church sings on the feast of Corpus Christi as well as throughout the year during Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

FISH CLUB NEWS

93 (years) vs. 45 (inches): 10 (years) vs. 36 (inches):

93 WINS ! - Walter Burnett 10 WINS ! - Jack Woda

EDW’s Fish Club took a chance on the weather and sailed out of Chesapeake Beach (MD) at 6:00 AM, Monday, April 30th. Fourteen individuals boarded the two boats with high hopes.

Returning to port at midday, two were happy winners, a

couple (whose under-sized catches were returned to the bay to grow up) mumbled something about doing better next year, and the rest simply enjoyed hours on the water with friends.

The winners happened to be the oldest and the youngest representatives from EDW: the former is Walter Burnett and the latter is Jack Woda.

The Fish Club has been around “forever,” and never turns away a member of EDW who wishes to wet a line once or twice annually. Those interested in joining should contact our current “Captain,” Chris Hudson at

CFH00728@gmailcom.

The next voyage is Thursday, July 19th, departing Rod & Reel in Chesapeake Beach at 6:00 AM. A berth is $130, with reservation and payment due in Kenny Goss’ hands not later than Tuesday, July 10th; his email is [email protected]. COME ABOARD!

PROCESS FOR THE FIRST DEGREE AND TRANSFERS-IN

You will notice whenever we have a degree ceremony we request that the candidates arrive by 7:00 PM in the Main Hall. This is to allow ample time to handle paperwork, write checks, do a brief overview of the order and EDW, and answer questions.

If you are an EDW member and have a candidate whom you wish to sponsor please have that candidate go to the membership section of the website (kofcedw2473.org) and fill in the details so we know to expect him. Please either contact our Membership Chairman Greg Strizek yourself, or have your candidate contact him at membership@kofcedw2473.

. Also remind your candidate to be in the Main Hall at 7:00 PM. Adherence to this will allow the evening to be a bit less hectic for our membership team, the Financial Secretary and our Insurance Agents.

Our council does NOT accept transfer applications on a degree night. If you know someone who wishes to transfer in have them contact FS Bill Wester beforehand. Bill will arrange a mutually agreeable time for the prospective transferee to come in and do the necessary paperwork and get an overview of our council and club.

EDW Pool Families,

We made it! Through the tough winter that lasted longer than we thought, we finally have constant

temperatures and blue pools! Knight’s families make sure to procure those pool memberships in order to swim this season! A reminder that Knights CAN NOT pay daily swim fees, you need one of our EDW pool membership options to take a dip! Please check out new and improved offerings at the Deep End along with the new patio built right outside the bar! Any questions regarding membership or summer issues feel free to contact me at the

office or via email at operations@ columbusclubevents.com

I want to take this time to give a special shout out to our GM Peter Silano. Not only does he diligently manage every aspect of our business, including watching over his office

staff with a fine tooth comb. He takes pride year after year in carefully manicuring a vision for the way our property looks every spring and summer. This year, I have to say, he has truly outdone himself. Our campus looks stunning. When you take a moment to enjoy the campus this season, remember the hard work that he and our vendors put in this offseason to truly make this place look great! Thanks Peter!

Greetings!!! LUK wants to take this opportunity to wish all dads a very happy and special Father’s Day.

Thanks to all of you that stopped by the LUK tent during the Memorial Day Picnic. We will be back on July 4th. Beginning around 2:00, LUK will set up our table and sell delicious homemade baked goods. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to win a beautiful handmade two-sided baby quilt which was hand quilted by 93-year old Brother Knight Walter Burnett. As with all our moneymaking projects, proceeds go toward refurbishing the Old Council Home.

Just a reminder to please join LUK in a virtual baby shower to support the organization “A Woman’s Choice” who give women the opportunity to preserve the lives of their unborn children. LUK is collecting unwrapped gifts and gift cards between now and June 10. We will transport the donations directly to the Director of A Woman’s Choice. This is the time to rid your closet of old baby items. Suggestion for tax-deductible gifts include: diapers (newborn – 5), pull-ups, baby wipes, unused bottles and pacifiers, toys, umbrella strollers, pack n’plays, baby shampoo, lotion, powder, new or slightly used clothing newborn - 4T, receiving blankets, bibs, rattles and gift cards.
