Carrousel®The advantage of the Carrousel is its continuous biological process of BOD/COD removal and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in one reactor, with only a limited amount of equipment required. The oxidation ditch is a looped channel system, featured by a central dividing wall and a surface aerator, the Oxyrator®, positioned at one or both ends of the wall. The Oxyrator® is a low-speed vertical shaft surface aerator. Its function is three-fold: It adds oxygen to the treatment process, it thoroughly mixes the wastewater and the purifying biomass (‘activated sludge’) and it creates and maintains the flow circulation through the channels.

Over the past 40 years, the Carrousel® has proven itself as a cost-effective, reliable and highly efficient method for the biological treatment of wastewater from both municipalities and industries.Over 1,200 systems have already been successfully implemented world-wide, with treatment capacities ranging from as little as one thousand population equivalents (p.e.) to as high as ten million p.e.

Products & technologies

BABE™The ‘Bio-Augmentation Batch Enhanced’ technology, is a compact and simple technology for the treatment of wastewater, containing (very) high concentrations of specific chemicals. Many industries, as well as numerous municipal wastewater treatment plants produce wastewater with high concentrations of specific chemicals. In the BABE-process, this wastewater together with a specific quantity of sludge from the main process pre-treated (in parallel) in a sequential batch type reactor.

The (pre)treated water and part of the BABE biomass is returned to the main process after the reaction and settlement. In the main process the BABE biomass continues with the removal of the specific chemicals, whilst improving the performance of th emain process sludge, this augmentation effect is possible as specific micro-organism in the normal flock forming biomass of the main process are enmeshed with the BABE sludge.

The BABE-process can be applied for the treatment of any slowly biodegradable components. B.A.B.E. technology is particularly appropriate for existing wastewater treatment systems that require a greater nitrogen removal capacity.

MBRCompared to the conventional activated sludge process, Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) wastewater treatment technology guarantees superb effluent quality and requires significantly less space. The biological process of a MBR is comparable to that of a conventional activated sludge plant.

The MBR combines the activated sludge process with membrane filtration in one compact reactor.Separation of sludge and final effluent (permeate)takes place by means of membranes, by which all suspended solids are filtered out. The result is reduced sludge production, and excellent effluent quality which enables possibilities for water re-use and hence, cost saving.

MBR technology is appropriate for small and large scale industrial wastewater treatment applications.Existing active sludge systems can be converted to a MBR system. Royal HaskoningDHV offers MBR systems with the new generation of membranes with significantly lower energy consumption.

MBTFCost-effective treatment of air, water and air/water mixtures is possible with the Moving Bed Trickling Filter (MBTF).The MBTF is a biological filter which can be used for the combined treatment of wastewater and foul air. The MBTF offers attractive advantages and good economics when considering treatment of air or wastewater independently. The major benefit is realized with the possibility of treating waste water and air simultaneously as separate investment for air treatment equipment is unnecessary.

The MBTF costs can be largely offset against the reduced waste water charges. The main advantages of the MBTF are high separation efficiency and high capacity. Furthermore, the MBTF is ‘continuously self-cleaning’ and has proven to be relatively insensitive to suspended solids and fats in the wastewater stream. This often makes the use of coagulants or flocculants in the pre-treatment unnecessary. It is a non-clogging, robust and universally applicable system. The MBTF has a small footprint, is easy to operate and has low energy consumption. Considerable operation and investment savings can be achieved.

Nautilus™Optimal flexibility and control of the MBR wastewater treatment plant with the independent Nautilus™ MBR concept. Royal HaskoningDHV has world-class know-how with most commercially available membranes. We have also gained hands-on experience with the design, engineering, constructing and operation of MBR installations. This experience, combined with in-depth knowledge of MBR processes, resulted in the Nautilus™ concept.

The Nautilus™ concept is an optimized design and control system. This concept’s most valued feature however, is that membranes of various suppliers can be interchanged, offering end-users maximum flexibility. Not only can the design be tailored to the chosen membranes during realization, but the end-user has the possibility of replacing the membranes with other suppliers’ membranes in the future.

Products & technologies

SBRThe Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology for aerobic biological wastewater treatment has good sludge settling characteristics, resulting in a reliable and excellent effluent quality. The SBR is a batch operated activated sludge process where one or more reactors are operated in parallel. The typical cycle for each reactor consists of four phases, the fill phase, the reaction phase, the settling phase and the decant phase. By changing the process settings, aerobic, anaerobic or anoxic conditions can be created.

The treatment steps are all done in a single tank, where conventional treatment processes use several Process zones and recirculation steps, followed by final settling in separate tanks. SBR technology is characterized by its relatively low investment and operational costs, coupled with its small spatial requirements. The high reliability enables optimal temperature control, without virtually any odor issues. The advantage of a SBR is the process flexibility to achieve the specific design and discharge requirements.

Nereda®Our innovative water purification technology Nereda® results in lower investment and operational costs and scores higher in sustainability whilst reducing the plant’s footprint. Nereda® is a hybrid SBR process with biological purification capability for industrial and municipal waste water treatment. This technology uses granular biomass, with a granule settling speed 10times faster than that of conventional flocks. The improved settle ability allows the process to be operated at mixed liquor concentrations comparable to that of MBR (3-4x that of conventional processes), while maintaining the high settling velocities. The aerobic granular sludge removes organic compounds as well as nutrients like nitrogen and phosphor to a high extent. Furthermore, given the high biomass concentration, Nereda® only requires a compact installation with accordingly low capital investments.

Due to the extremely short settling time it is beneficial to operate Nereda® as a Sequencing Batch process in a single reactor, which eliminates the need for separate clarifiers. By using either a buffer tank or several, parallel Nereda®-reactors, the wastewater treatment system can be operated as a continuous process.

ABR®The Anti Bulking Reactor (ABR)® is a robust solution to prevent bulking sludge problems within wastewater treatment plants, whilst effectively reducing oxygen demand and bio sludge production. In industrial wastewater treatment plants problems with bulking sludge are often caused by easily biodegradable components. Poor settling results in reduced performance and loss of active biomass. The ABR® biodegrades the components in a kind of chemostate with a hydraulic residence time of 4 to 20 hours. Additionally, the ABR® decreases overall oxygen demand and biosludge production by approximately25%, whilst providing an effective oxidation of reduced sulphur compounds.

The ABR® process performs well at high and low temperatures. Given the compact and simple design, ABR® is a very cost-effective upgrade for improving the performance of existing, overloaded, treatment plants or even as alternative to anaerobic pretreatment.

The ABR® can be applied in industrial wastewater treatment processes with high C/N ratios and a COD concentration of more than 1000 mg/l. Also, the combination of the ABR® with Carrousel® has proven to be a winning solution.

Anaerobic treatmentAnaerobic pre-treatment aims to reduce the energy needs of a treatment process. Because of the formation of Biogas, anaerobic treatment has specific appeal as pre-treatment of COD-rich wastewater flows. Biogas is an energy source which can be used for several applications, like heat, electricity or green gas (transport fuel). Royal HaskoningDHV has great in-house expertise regarding anaerobic treatment, further post treatment and possibilities for the usage and sales of Biogas. Our independent knowledge is of great value, particularly during system selection studies, based on technical and economical aspects. We also have extensive experience in the startup and operation of anaerobic treatment plants, enabling us to design your anaerobic treatment process with the lowest capital and operational expenditures.

Products & technologies

Physical / chemical water treatmentIn several industries, physical/chemical treatment processes are used to remove or in some cases recycle specific components from the wastewater. Chemical precipitation is an old process at which inorganic components are separated from the wastewater by superseding the specific solubility as sludge flocks. This superseding is usually realized by the addition of specific chemicals. This type of process is still often used because of its robustness and its ability to remove multiple components simultaneously.

For example in the DND process (Detox-Neutralisation-Dewatering),several metals are removed whilst cyanide and nitrite are oxidized and chromium (VI) reduced to harmless components. It is also possible to recycle sulphate and Magnesiumammoniumphosphate (MAP).The so-called struvite.

DAF‘Dissolved Air Flotation’ enables the extensive removal of suspended solids and free and emulgated fats and oils from the wastewater. A DAF is often used as one of the first steps in the treatment process, making the wastewater suitable for discharge or further biological treatment. In a DAF-installation very small, fine dispersed air bubbles are released. These bubbles attach to the fine particles in the water which floats them to the surface. With the addition of coagulation and/or flocculation aids this effect can be enhanced. The floating sludge is then removed by means of a scraper device and discharged to a container to be further thickened or dewatered.

The DAF is ideal to remove free and emulgated fats and oil as well as high and fluctuating concentrations of suspended solids. This process is also often used to protect or relieve overloaded downstream processes.

Crystalactor®The Crystalactor® not only efficiently treats water without residual waste and is applicable for softening of(process) water, but also offers the recovery of heavy metals, phosphates and fluoride from wastewater to a quality with high market value. The Crystalactor® is a fluidized-bed type crystallizer for the treatment of water and wastewater. The heart of the treatment plant is a pellet reactor, partially filled with a suitable seed material like sand or minerals. The wastewater is pumped in an upward direction maintaining the pellet bed in a fluidized state. In order to crystallize the target component on the pellet bed, a driving force is created by a reagent dosage and pH-adjustment.

With the appropriate process conditions, co-crystallization of impurities is minimized and high-purity crystals are obtained. The pellets grow and move towards the reactor bottom. After drying, readily handled and virtually water-free pellets are obtained. No sludge dewatering is needed. The pellets can then be recycled or reused, resulting in no residual waste for disposal. Another advantage is that the four steps of conventional physical-chemical treatment processes are combined into one, resulting in a very compact treatment process. Filtration techniques

Filtration is often used as final polishing step to reach the required effluent quality. Filtration is a commonly applied process in a (waste)water treatment plant. The principles and executions are numerous and are dependent on the particle size and concentration of the components to be removed. For example for larger particles, bag filters or sand filters are used and for dissolved ions membrane filtration.

BioWatchThe microbiological composition of the activated sludge is essential for the performance of a biological wastewater treatment plant. This composition can be influenced by carefully adjusting the right parameters. The BioWatch assesses the quality (and composition) of the sludge periodically, in order to stabilize and optimize process conditions. It is also possible to anticipate on process disturbances. With microscopic techniques various characteristics of the sludge (flocs, bacteria, higher organisms) are monitored and combined with analysis of the operational data, practical measures for improvements are recommended or implemented. Incase of acute problems, our experts can offer immediate support on location.

Water Footprint AssessmentWith the Water Footprint Sustainability Assessment we aim to support industries, governments and project developers in their endeavor to more sustainable and socially responsible production and development. This tool portrays the water footprint and the impact of water consumption on the environment. Furthermore this tool identifies key indicators in the production chain, leading to more effectives and efficiency and hence to a better sustainability score in the water compartment. The WaterFootprint doesn’t stand alone. Footprinting became an essential element in the measurement of sustainability achievements. Apart from the Water Footprint, the carbon -,the social – and the ecological footprint are also vitally important indicators.

AquaCCP®To guarantee safe use and reuse of water within the food industry Royal HaskoningDHV developed AquaCCP®: a water quality control tool to support. The core of AquaCCP® is formed by an efficient tailor-made water quality monitoring system. The monitoring network becomes the key water component in the companies’ obliged HACCP system. A successful introduction of AquaCCP® within the companies’ HACCP system obviously requires chemical and microbiological water expertise and experience in the field of food production and HACCP systems. We connect all these requirements. After the embedding of AquaCCP® in the HACCP system, information for the companies’

operations and utilities managers will be produced. Directly based on the produced information interventions in day to day production becomes possible to ensure safe and reliable food production.

Energy Potential ScanIndustrial processes are often energy intensive processes, where water is most of the time also an energy carrier. Royal HaskoningDHV has up-to-date knowledge of all possibilities of heat- and energy recovery related to the water housekeeping and CHP (Combined Heat Power) links, including associated engineering. The Energy Potential Scan (EPS) structures the current energy consumption and the various possibilities in energy savings. The goal of the inventory is not only a list of measurements. The ultimate goal is a permanent energy and cost reduction. During the execution of the EPS, the employees of the participating company are actually doing the inventory activities themselves. For this purpose they are working in an Energy Action Team with assistance of a Royal HaskoningDHV consultant.

SludgeScanThe costs for sludge treatment and sludge disposal are generally about 30 till 50 % of the total operational costs of a wastewater treatment plant. Royal HaskoningDHV’s SludgeScan is aimed at reducing these costs. During a SludgeScan an inventory is made of sludge production, sludge composition, treatment process, operational management, options for alternative and cost reducing disposal and overall costs. Several efficiency and innovation measures are simulated and the best are selected for implementation. Experienced technology experts carry out the SludgeScan in close cooperation with the client.

CODECo-digesters plants produce digestate as residual. At this time digestate is classified as an expensive waste stream. Without governmental subsidy co-digesters are not profitable. Royal HaskoningDHV developed a new process called CODE (Central Processing Sustainable Deliverables). In this process the digestate is reprocessed. The raw materials are extracted in order to convert it to useful products like fertilizers and biopolymers. This means that CODE converts waste to raw materials. Instead of processing and waste disposal costs a profitable product is generated. CODE technology is sustainable and makes biobased economy initiatives without governmental subsidy profitable. It provides a solution for the manure problem in the agricultural sector as well.

WaterScan and Water recycling towards Zero dischargeThe WaterScan optimizes water management processes to achieve water and cost savings. It is the first step to gain insight in the possibilities for water reclamation and reuse or even more to close the water cycle completely. To a total water loop closure the WaterScan is an approach whereby a scan is made of the current water consumption, identifying optimal ways to save water and the organizational measures necessary to achieve a consistent reduction in water consumption (and costs). Also relevant innovative measures for water reclamation, reuse and recycling are explored. The WaterScan results are presented in a clear and prioritized overview of practically feasible cost reductions and optimizations fully tailored to the client’s specific situation and has proven itself in various industries. When applicable also a complete ‘pinch study’ can be done.
