Global Revival: PM Modi have India playing a leading role. I see this closely

linked with two factors. The first is- Indian talent.World over, you have seen the contribution of India'stalent-force.This includes Indian professionals, doctors, nurses, bankers, lawyers, scientists, professors, ourhard-working laborers. Who can forget the Indian techindustry and tech professionals? They have beenshowing the way for decades. India is a power-house oftalent, that is eager to contribute, ever ready to learn. There is two-way synergy that is greatly beneficial", hesaid.

"The second factor is India's ability to reform andrejuvenate. Indians are natural reformers! History hasshown that India has overcome every challenge, be itsocial or economic. India has done so with a spirit ofreform and rejuvenation. The same sprit continuesnow", he affirmed.

India Inc. Group - the UK-headquartered media housebehind flagship publications 'India Global Business'and the recently-launched diaspora news network'iGlobal' - brought together some of the best strategicminds and experts in their respective fields.

With +75 sessions, +250 speakers and +5000participants from 49 countries, India Global Weekcements itself as the event where 'India Meets theWorld, and the World Meets India.

Prime Minister Modi tops a stellar list of speakers inpacked program across three days between July 9 and11, including External Affairs Minister Dr S.Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, IT &Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Skills MinisterMahendra Nath Pandey, from India.

US still ‘knee-deep’’in first waveof coronavirus, says Dr. Fauci

states struggling with burgeoning coronavirus casesand hospitalizations.

"I think any state that is having a serious problem, that state should seriously look at shutting down,"Fauci told the newspaper in a podcast.

He did say Wednesday that simple steps short of fulleconomic lockdowns -- controlling crowds, wearingmasks and doing a better job at physical distancing --would help.

The country and some states are setting records foraverage daily officially reported cases, ICUs in hot spotsare reaching capacity, and most states are seeing spikes, recalling the uncertainty of months ago when the virusfirst broke out.

Another health expert echoed Fauci's initialcomment about second shutdowns.

"If you're not doing the ... things we've talked about inthe past to get this outbreak under control, startingwith test and trace ... your only option is to shut down,"Dr. Ali Khan, former director of the CDC's public healthpreparedness office said.

Climbing case numbers have motivated many statesto pause or roll back plans to reopen economies afterwidespread shutdowns in the spring.

The US reached more than 3 million coronaviruscases this week, according to data from Johns HopkinsUniversity. At least 33 states as of Thursday morninghave seen an upward trend in average daily cases -- anincrease of at least 10% -- over the last week.

Some states have recently reported alarming rates atwhich people are testing positive: 28% in Arizona; 26%in Texas; and 19% in Florida, according to The CovidTracking Project.

Previous recommendations for reopening economies, expressed by the CDC, called for test-positivity rates ofno greater than 20% just to reach first-phasereopenings, and less than 10% for fuller reopenings.

The country still is reckoning with job losses from thefirst stay-at-home orders. Though millions of jobs havecome back, 18.1 million Americans currently are oncontinued unemployment claims, meaning they filed atleast two straight weeks, the Department of Labor saidThursday, July 9.

And more than 3 million Americans appear to havelost jobs that aren't coming back any time soon, economists say.

Supreme Court rules Manhattanprosecutor may see Trump's

financial recordsthe court appeared to question the breadth of

congressional authority. The Supreme Court ruled that the lower court needs

to consider separation of power issues related to thecongressional subpoenas, suggesting that Congress didnot have unlimited powers to investigate the president. That ruling was also 7-2, with Roberts writing theopinion.

Trump was apparently enraged by the outcome, tweeting a string of criticism that "this is all a politicalprosecution," and "Courts in the past have given 'broaddeference.' BUT NOT ME!"

New York District Attorney Cyrus Vance issued astatement calling the decision in the grand jury case "atremendous victory for our nation's system of Justiceand its founding principle that no one - not even thepresident - is above the law."

Trump's personal attorney Jay Sekulow took a moreoptimistic tone than the president in his response to theSupreme Court rulings on the president's financialinformation.

"We are pleased that in the decisions issued today, theSupreme Court has temporarily blocked both Congressand New York prosecutors from obtaining thePresident's financial records. We will now proceed toraise additional Constitutional and legal issues in thelower courts," Sekulow said in a statement. (With inputsfrom agencies)

"As I've said before, we know this virus is a lot less lethal outdoors than indoors, but that does not mean it is not lethal," said Governor Murphy. "The hotspots we'reseeing across the nation and certain worrisome transmission trends in New Jerseyrequire us to do more. In the absence of a national strategy on face coverings, we'retaking this step to ensure that we can continue on our road back as one New Jerseyfamily."

Indian American Congressman lashes outat Trump for withdrawing from WHO

PARMINDER AUJLA

SACRAMENTO (TIP): Indian originRep. Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) Chairman ofthe House Foreign Affairs Subcommitteeon Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferationheavily criticized President Trump afterhe formally withdrew the United Statesfrom the World Health Organization(WHO).

"Communities around the UnitedStates are grappling with increasingcases of coronavirus and instead offunding a national testing strategy andramping up testing and contact tracing, the President has chosen to cut testingand to shift the blame by withdrawing theUnited States from the WHO.No responsehas been perfect, including the WHO's.But the WHO is playing a critical role bycoordinating the global response andproviding important guidance andinformation about the virus. It is thisinformation and guidance that has helpedcountries in Europe and Asia tackle andcontain the virus. They bent the curve. Our cases are increasing. If the WHO is toblame: why has the U.S. been left behindwhile many countries from South Koreato New Zealand to Vietnam to Germanyreturn to normal?" he questioned.

That answer starts at the White House.Time and time again, even before COVID-

19, the President has downplayed thedanger of pandemics. They proposed cutsto the CDC and DoD pandemicpreparedness programs, which I helpedreverse. They disbanded the NationalSecurity Council office responsible forpreparing for these outbreaks, which Iopposed. They tried to cut funds to defeat

Ebola during an actual Ebola outbreak, which Congress rolled back. Is it anysurprise that when a pandemic came, this President was not prepared?Historically, the United States and theWorld Health Organization have workedhand in hand. We helped defeat smallpoxand nearly eliminated polio. We used tolead the world in combatting infectiousdisease. Those efforts aligned andsupported WHO's efforts. Not this time.America lost its best chance to defeat thisvirus once the President began tominimize the pandemic and shift blameonto others, instead of assumingresponsibility and actually leading ourcountry through this crisis. Today'sdecision comes as no surprise", hefurther added

Rep. Bera has been a leader inCongress on global health security. Hechaired the first congressional hearingon the coronavirus on Feb. 5th, soundedthe alarm after the TrumpAdministration disbanded the globalhealth security office in the NationalSecurity Council in 2018, and is amember on the CSIS Commission onStrengthening America's HealthSecurity, which in November 2019 made aseries of recommendations to preventpandemics.

NEW YORK (TIP): A group of 58Indian-origin executives heading variouscompanies across 11 different countries, including the US, Canada and Singapore, collectively employ more than 3.6 millionpeople and account for a combined USD 1trillion in revenue, USD 4 trillion inmarket capitalization, according to a listreleased by a US-based top Indiandiaspora organization.

Indian-origin business leaders arereaching the pinnacle of corporatesuccess in greater numbers than ever, many use their platforms for socialchange advocacy, said Indiaspora, anonprofit organization of global Indiandiaspora leaders from variousbackgrounds and professions.

The Indiaspora Business Leaders Listof 58 executives head companiesheadquartered across 11 differentcountries, including the US, Canada,England, and Singapore and thesecompanies have delivered annualizedreturns of 23 per cent during the tenureof these executives, outperforming theS&P 500 by 10 per cent.

These companies collectively employmore than 3.6 million worldwide andaccount for a combined USD 1 trillion inrevenue and USD 4 trillion in marketcapitalization.

"We wanted to capture this incrediblefeat that our community is achievingwith increasing numbers," saidIndiaspora founder MR Rangaswami, aSilicon Valley-based entrepreneur andinvestor.

"The impact that the Indian diaspora ishaving in the realm of business isremarkable. It's one of the reasons welaunched this project, and we hope our

lists will continue to raise the profile ofthose who have reached the very top oftheir fields while also serving as agentsfor positive change," Rangaswami said.

The stereotype of the Indian CEO issomeone who represents the tech sector, but this list of 58 CEOs dispels that myth,he said, adding that these leadersrepresent many different sectors, including banking, electronics, consumer goods, and consulting.

Releasing the list during a virtual pressconference, Rangaswami said that theseexecutives are as young as 37, all the wayto age 74 with the median age of theseexecutives being 54.

During this coronavirus pandemic, these companies have made lots ofhumanitarian aid contributions, andalso, they're taking care of theiremployees, their customers, their supplychain.

"So these companies are doing a lot torespond to COVID-19," Rangaswami said.

Many of the executives on the list havetaken an active position on issues likeBlack Lives Matter in making sure thatthey also stand along with the blackcommunity in terms of getting racialequality and racial justice, he said.

The list of Indian-origin CEOs includesimmigrants from India as well asprofessionals born in countries such asUganda, Ethiopia, England, and the US.

"I'm amazed to see how far we've comein terms of representation in business,"said Raj Gupta, former CEO of Fortune300 company Rohm and Haas, and one ofthe first executives of the Indiandiaspora to join the ranks of corporateleadership along with pioneers such asIndra Nooyi of PepsiCo and Dinesh

Paliwal of Harman International."There used to be only a handful of us

leading corporations. Now that we arereaching prominence, I am eager to seehow the next generation leaves its ownlegacy," said Gupta, an Indiasporamember, who serves as Chairman of twocompanies on the Business Leaders List,Aptiv and Avantor.

"It's inspiring to see so many leaders ofIndian heritage playing a significant rolein business and in society," said AjayBanga, President and CEO ofMastercard.

"Our culture and our values are acommon starting point. But it's what wedo with the opportunities presented to usthat make a difference. When we leaninto our diverse experiences to deal withchallenges like the pandemic or racialinjustice, we can have an even greaterimpact on the lives of those around us,"he said.

Indiaspora said that many of thesediaspora executives have led theircompanies in advancing social change byaddressing racial injustice, climate andsustainability justice, and thedisproportionate effects of COVID-19through policy and financial commitments.

Tech industry leader Sundar Pichai,CEO of Alphabet, has announced newgoals for racial equity, includingimproving leadership representation ofunderrepresented groups at Google, andan "economic opportunity package" forthe Black community.

Many of the leaders' companies havecreated or contributed funds in responseto COVID-19, with monetary andhumanitarian aid totaling more thanUSD 400 million, Indiaspora said.

The Indiaspora Business Leaders Listalso calls attention to the presence of aglass ceiling that women, includingIndian women, still face. Out of 1,000companies represented on the Fortune500 list, only 61 have women CEOs; theIndiaspora List has a marginally higherpercentage of women, yet includes onlyfive women out of the 58 leaders.

"It's an honor to join so manyoutstanding leaders on this year'sIndiaspora Business Leaders list, each ofwhom is making a meaningful impactwithin their industry," said ReshmaKewalramani, MD, CEO and President ofVertex Pharmaceuticals.

"As a physician and CEO dedicated tocreating transformative medicines thatimprove the lives of people with seriousdiseases, I believe deeply in the criticalrole a diverse and inclusive culture playsin being able to achieve that mission atVertex," she said. (Source: PTI)

The Covid-19 pandemic has wreakedunprecedented havoc on mankindand across nations. The contagion

is global, and perhaps, requires acoordinated worldwide response. It hasblurred the distinction between thedeveloped and under-developed worldsand seems to be pushing for a new socio-economic world order.

The devastation caused by thepandemic is debated and feared byeveryone. Trade, business and industryhave been impacted in equal measure, though agriculture seems to have shownsome resilience to beat the ill-effects ofthe virus. The producers of food grainshave so far found their way through theshutdown. They have succeeded in theharvesting of winter crops and thesowing of summer crops despite thepandemic. Even the governments were atease in distributing grains in the face ofbroken food supply chains because ofsufficient buffer stocks. But the loss ofproducers of perishable commoditiessuch as fruits and vegetables, dairy andpoultry products could not be preventedowing to disruptions in transportationand demand contraction.

Likewise, loss of jobs, particularlythose in unorganized sectors could notbe avoided as production processeshalted and the markets were closed. Evenafter unlocking the markets, there arenot many buyers due to the decliningincome and liquidity crunch. Thegradual opening of businesses has, however, created hope for many in theMSME sector. The revival ofemployment in agriculture has somehowshown more promise than the othersectors of the economy.

Without undermining the losses thrustupon society and the economy, it has tobe admitted that the pandemic hascompelled the people for a change inbehavior that is otherwise difficult toachieve. Avoidance of non-essentialtravel and luxurious spending, maintenance of social distancing, handhygiene, and the wearing of the mask orany such thing that keeps one's healthassured or good and saves life are likedor at least not abhorred by the commonman. Even those who preferred freeloitering in groups are now maintainingsocial distancing.

At times, it was difficult to persuadepeople to take potable piped waterconnections, build toilets, avoid opendefecation, ensure safe food quality andmaintain sanitation in galis (lanes) andmohallas (localities). Today, the demandfor such basic services has increased. The communities are compelling for theprovisioning of these essentials. Theyare even ensuring surveillance on Covid-19 cases and travelers around theirvillages or habitations. Healthconsciousness has risen to a new high.Even the addicts are seeking treatmentto return to normal living, much to thedetriment of drug suppliers andpeddlers.

The pandemic has propelled the use ofdigital technology. Fintech, proptech, edutech, and agri-tech are now commonin day-to-day conduct of business.Digital education, unknown to over 90per cent of teachers, is now widelypreferred. During the recent harvestingand sowing of crops in Punjab, most

farmers were eager to be a part of digitalmessaging through WhatsApp or otherapps. They downloaded e-passes for thesale of their products and useddebit/credit cards more often than everbefore. The disrupted food supply chainswere also kicking, even in containmentareas, due to the use of digitaltechnology. The Amazons and Zomatoswere able to reach more householdsdespite restrictions.

Another satisfying change is thedecline in avoidable lavish spending onsocial occasions such as marriages andother such celebrations that areidentified as one of the major reasons forthe rising indebtedness amongst thefarmers and landless workers. Therestrictions on social extravaganza, triedmany times earlier, succeeded, thoughforcibly during the pandemic. No policyor programme could achieve this andhopefully, it will be maintained in thefuture.

The pandemic unlocked hidden energy

in governments. The lethargy andinertia in governance disappearedwithout any loss of time as the threat tolife and livelihood for the common manwas grave and hugely perilous. It led toprompt decision-making; rapid re-formulation of programs andadjustment of public policies tominimize, if not avoid, the devastationand provide immediate relief to theaffected vulnerable populations. Thequick proclamation of lockdown, rapidupgrade of health infrastructure, swiftidentification and resolution ofunrealized problems such as migrantworkers and fiscal stimulus are some ofthe outcomes of a new way of life and, ofcourse, governance.

The pandemic has surely led to a newnormal in our lives. It is different, butnot so unusual. It may sometimes appearto be absurd and restrictive, but is notreprehensible or difficult. In many ways,it has taught us discipline, care for oneanother, use of technology, financialresponsibility, and prudence in life.Covid-19 has made us realize values andsystems, some of which can be termed astraditional, concerning hygiene, health, education and even society andcommunities in which we live. 'Leaveyour shoes out'; 'Take off your shoes;'Spitting not allowed' or 'Wash yourhands', though may appear to be the newnormal, are not new or unfamiliarphrases for us. The pandemic hasperhaps enforced conduct that requiresthe use of new techniques andtechnologies with the widespreadadoption of old but otherwise normalsystems and practices, which were lost inour pursuits to grow, perhapsunknowingly. The pandemic has drivenus to a new world of work and living.

Covid-19 has not only devastatedlives and livelihoods across theglobe, but also played havoc with

the academic calendar. Amid therestrictions necessitated by thepandemic, educational institutions havebeen engaging with students throughonline classes - a 'something is better thannothing' option that factors in the currentunfeasibility of in-person teaching. In amove betraying total disconnect with thesituation on the ground, the DonaldTrump administration has made ittougher for international students to stayand study in the US. America'sImmigration and Customs Enforcement

agency has said that it would not allowholders of student visas to remain in thecountry if their institution goes fullyonline for the upcoming fall season. These students face the risk ofdeportation if they don't shift touniversities and colleges offering a blendof in-person and online coursework.

The US State Department claims thatthis 'temporary accommodation' providesgreater flexibility to foreign students, butit's actually a coercive step that severelylimits their choices and forces them to'take it or leave it'. The rash decision willparticularly hit Indian and Chinese

nationals as the two countries togetheraccount for about half of the over 11 lakhinternational students in the US. WithIndia's Foreign Secretary Harsh VardhanShringla promptly expressing concernover the development, the US is likely tofind itself under increasing diplomaticpressure to do a rethink sooner than later.

The Trump administration has chosento play the 'us versus they' card monthsbefore the presidential elections. Thedivisive order, which has been challengedin a federal court by Harvard Universityand the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT), could prove to be

counterproductive in more ways thanone. Slamming the door on a large groupof foreigners would deprive America of amajor money-spinner at a time when itseconomy is in the doldrums. With no signof a let-up in the Covid crisis, USuniversities and colleges are justified inswitching to the online mode, albeit as anad hoc, stop-gap measure. Maintainingthe standards of education matters; sodoes the safety of students and teachers. The challenge lies in striking a balancebetween the two considerations.

AS I SEE IT

Pandemic has ushered in the new normal

Failing students: America's visa curbs reek of coercion, bias

The pandemic unlocked hidden energy in governments. The lethargy andinertia in governance disappeared without any loss of time as the threat to

the common man's life and livelihood was perilous. It led to prompt decision-making, rapid re-formulation of programs and policies to minimize the

devastation and provide relief to the vulnerable population.

A new world: Covid has enforced conduct that requires the use of new technologies along withthe old but normal systems and practices

“We are now seeing thebeginning of movementsacross many parts of the

world, and particularlyacross Asia, objecting to

China's territorialambitions and its 'Belt

and Road' infrastructureprojects. But, given thesize of its economy and

its conventional andnuclear weapon

capabilities, China'sglobal influence will

remain significant. It willcontinue to work closely

with Pakistan toundermine and contain

Indian influence andpower. It will also seek

to undermine Indianinfluence in Nepal and

Bangladesh. Thus, whileour bilateral economic

restrictions on China areimportant, we shouldremember that China

will be influenced only ifwe work in coordinationwith other regional and

global powers. It is,nevertheless, imperative

that military anddiplomatic contacts and

dialogue with Chinashould continue, while

taking appropriatemeasures to meet the

security challenges wecontinue to face, in

Ladakh and elsewhere, across our borders with

China."

Prime Minister Modi visited Ladakhon July 3 to express the nation'sgratitude to the armed forces and

paramilitary for their role in defending thecountry, while facing serious challengesposed by China. His visit also came in thewake of seething public anger and calls forretribution, because parts of the Galwanvalley and the Pangong Tso had come underChinese control. Referring to China'sperfidy in seeking to expand its land andmaritime frontiers, Modi noted: 'Wheneverthe obsession for expansionist victoriestakes over someone, it causes dangers toworld peace.' He pointedly added:'Expansionism has been dangerous tomankind.'

China's disastrous invasion of Vietnam in1979, its ill-advised intrusions in Sikkim in1975, the serious setbacks in its intrusionsin Sumdorong Chu in Arunachal Pradeshin 1986, and in Doklam in 2017, havedemonstrated that China's army is notinvincible. The Chinese have refused todisclose their casualties in the Galwanmisadventure. Reliable western journalshave, however, disclosed that 43 Chinesesoldiers were killed in hand-to-handcombat. The Chinese must now understandhow a relatively small, but determinedgroup of Indian Army soldiers respondedstrongly, decisively and effectively, whentheir unarmed compatriots weretreacherously killed. Modi pointedly notedthat 'territorial expansionism' was thebiggest threat to humanity. He was alludingto China's arbitrary territorial claims onvirtually all its neighbors, including Japan,Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, thePhilippines and even Russia, where someChinese are now reviving claims to theRussian port of Vladivostok, which hasbeen a part of Russia since 1860! China'spast actions, aimed at expanding itsfrontiers, will now meet greater oppositionfrom its immediate neighbors, across thewestern Pacific Ocean. China had thus far

overcome such opposition by a policy of'divide and rule', backed by crude threats tothose who disagree with it. Its 'disincentives'have included crude use of maritimemilitary power against countries likeVietnam, Brunei, the Philippines andIndonesia. The primary motive for suchbehavior is to have unchallenged access to11 billion barrels of untapped oil and 190trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the SouthChina Sea. China has used its powerful navyto take control of vast tracts of the sea, fromits ASEAN maritime neighbors.

Three days after Modi's visit to Ladakh,NSA Ajit Doval had detailed discussionswith Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.India's Special Representative announcedthat Doval and Wang Yi agreed to completethe ongoing disengagement along the LACand ensure de-escalation. This will reducecurrent tensions, but will it end the repeatedviolations of the LAC whose contours theChinese refuse to define? It would requirefurther negotiations to get China to pull outfrom Pangong Tso. This effort would have tobe complemented by active internationaldiplomacy that focuses on Chineseintransigence.

The leaders of ASEAN member states, meanwhile, have demanded that territorialand other differences should be settled inaccordance with the provisions of the UNConvention of the Law of the Seas(UNCLOS). They added: 'UNCLOS sets outthe legal framework within which allactivities in the oceans and seas must becarried out.' The International Court ofArbitration at The Hague had issued a clearruling in 2016 on a claim brought under theUNCLOS, against China, by the Philippines. The ruling was in favor of the Philippines. While China is a signatory to the treaty, which established the tribunal, it hasrefused to accept the verdict.

China cannot be pleased with theinternational diplomatic fallout of itsbehavior. US Secretary of State Mike

Pompeo launched a scathing attack onChina on June 25, averring that the USwould deploy additional forces in the Indo-Pacific Region in response to growingChinese threats to India and othercountries. He indicated that he had spokento his counterparts in the EU about threatsChina posed to its 'peaceful neighbors likeIndia'. He also alluded to Chinese threats toVietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia, and itsdisregard for maritime frontiers. Pompeo'swords have been accompanied by theunprecedented deployment of two USnuclear-powered aircraft carriers in theIndo-Pacific region. India should, in turn, promote greater maritime cooperationbetween members of the recently formedQuad grouping, comprising the US, Japan,India and Australia. This grouping ismoving towards coordinated actions tocounter Chinese territorial threats.

We are now seeing the beginning ofmovements across many parts of the world, and particularly across Asia, objecting toChina's territorial ambitions and its 'Belt andRoad' infrastructure projects. But, given thesize of its economy and its conventional andnuclear weapon capabilities, China's globalinfluence will remain significant. It willcontinue to work closely with Pakistan toundermine and contain Indian influence andpower. It will also seek to undermine Indianinfluence in Nepal and Bangladesh. Thus, while our bilateral economic restrictions onChina are important, we should rememberthat China will be influenced only if we workin coordination with other regional andglobal powers. It is, nevertheless, imperativethat military and diplomatic contacts anddialogue with China should continue, whiletaking appropriate measures to meet thesecurity challenges we continue to face, inLadakh and elsewhere, across our borderswith China.

NEW YORK (TIP): President DonaldTrump's niece offers a scathing portrayalof her uncle in a new book, blaming atoxic family for raising a narcissistic, damaged man who poses an immediatedanger to the public, according to a copyobtained by The Associated Press.

Mary L. Trump, a psychologist, writesthat Trump's reelection would becatastrophic and that "lying, playing tothe lowest common denominator, cheating, and sowing division are all heknows."

"By the time this book is published, hundreds of thousands of American liveswill have been sacrificed on the altar ofDonald's hubris and willful ignorance. Ifhe is afforded a second term, it would bethe end of American Democracy," shewrites in "Too Much and Never Enough,How My Family Created The World's MostDangerous Man." Mary Trump is thedaughter of Trump's elder brother, Fred

Jr., who died after a struggle withalcoholism in 1981 at 42. The book is thesecond insider account in two months topaint a deeply unflattering portrait of thepresident, following the release of formernational security adviser John Bolton'sbestseller.

In her book, Mary Trump, who isestranged from her uncle, makes severalrevelations, including alleging that thepresident paid a friend to take the SATs -a standardized test widely used for collegeadmissions - in his place.

She writes that his sister MaryanneTrump did his homework for him butcouldn't take his tests and he worried hisgrade point average, which put him farfrom the top of the class, would "scuttlehis efforts to get accepted" into theWharton School of the University ofPennsylvania, where he transferred aftertwo years at Fordham University in theBronx.

"To hedge his bets he enlisted JoeShapiro, a smart kid with a reputation forbeing a good test taker, to take his SATsfor him," she writes, adding, "Donald, whonever lacked for funds, paid his buddywell."

White House spokesperson SarahMatthews called the allegation"completely false."

Mary Trump also writes, in awe, ofTrump's ability to gain the support ofprominent Christian leaders and whiteevangelicals, saying: "The only timeDonald went to church was when the

cameras were there. It's mind boggling. He has no principles. None!"

White House press secretary KayleighMcEnany slammed the book Tuesday, saying, "It's ridiculous, absurdaccusations that have absolutely nobearing in truth."

Mary Trump traces much of her pain tothe death of her father when she was 16.The president, who rarely admitsmistakes, told The Washington Post lastyear that he regretted the pressure he andhis father had put on Fred Jr. to join thefamily business when his brother wantedto be a pilot instead.

"It was just not his thing. ... I think themistake that we made was we assumedthat everybody would like it. That wouldbe the biggest mistake. ... There was sortof a double pressure put on him," Trumptold the paper.

Yet as her father lay dying alone, MaryTrump claims, "Donald went to themovies." She says that, as a child, DonaldTrump hid favorite toys from his youngerbrother and took juvenile stunts - likeFred Jr. dumping a bowl of mashedpotatoes on his then-7-year-old head - soseriously that he harbored resentmentseven when his eldest sister, Maryanne, brought it up in her toast at his WhiteHouse birthday dinner in 2017.

She paints Trump, who often called her"Honeybunch," as a self-centerednarcissist who demanded constantadulation - even from his family - and hadlittle regard for family members' feelings.

Trump's crude rhetoric on thecampaign trail, she said, was nothingnew, reminding her "of every family mealI'd ever attended during which Donaldhad talked about all of the women heconsidered ugly fat slobs or the men, usually more accomplished or powerful,he called losers."

The book is, at its heart, a lengthypsychoanalysis of the Trump family by awoman trained in the field, who sees thetraits of her uncle that critics despise as anatural progression of behaviorsdeveloped at the knees of a demandingfather. For Donald Trump, she writes,"lying was defensive - not simply a way tocircumvent his father's disapproval or toavoid punishment ... but a way to survive."

Publisher Simon & Schusterannounced Monday that it would bepublishing the book two weeks early, onJuly 14, after a New York appellate courtcleared the way for the book's publicationfollowing a legal challenge.

Robert Trump, the president's youngerbrother, had sued Mary Trump, arguingin legal papers that she was subject to a20-year-old agreement between familymembers that no one would publishaccounts involving core family memberswithout their approval.

A judge last week left in place arestraint that blocked Mary Trump andany agent of hers from distributing thebook, but the court made clear it was notconsidering Simon & Schuster to becovered by the ruling. (Source: AP)

Biden releases U.S.-centered economic plan, challenging Trump's 'America First' agenda

WASHINGTON (TIP): Joe Biden unveiled a proposalThursday, July 9, to spend $700 billion on Americanproducts and research, challenging President Trump's"America First" agenda with a competing brand ofeconomic nationalism and setting the stage for anelection-year showdown over the country's financialfuture.

The Biden campaign plan for manufacturing andinnovation aims to bring back jobs lost this year andcreate at least 5 million more with sweepinginvestments in domestic technology; reducedependence on foreign countries to supply criticalgoods; and implement trade and tax policies thatempower U.S. workers.

"When we spend taxpayers' money, when the federalgovernment spends taxpayers' money, we should use itto buy American products and support American jobs,"Biden said in a speech in Dunmore, Pa. Thepresumptive Democratic nominee spoke at a metalworks plant, delivering the first major element of whathis campaign says will be a four-part agenda tospearhead an economic recovery.

Biden says economy is 'at risk' under Trumppresidency

On July 2, presumptive Democratic presidentialnominee Joe Biden said that President Trump "badlybungled" the health and economic responses to

coronavirus. (Joe Biden/YouTube)"Enough is enough," said Biden. "It's time to reverse

the priorities in this country. It's time to help smallbusinesses, middle-class folks, manage their waythrough the pandemic."

Trump has been arguing for months that theeconomy will regain its momentum when businesses, restaurants and other operations are allowed to reopen, and he has pushed for that to happen quickly despitethe ongoing pandemic.

Biden's announcement prompted frustration by someTrump allies that it was released before the presidentannounced a similar "Buy American" proposal that hasbeen held up for months amid internal objections, according to current and former officials. Stephen K.Bannon, a former chief Trump strategist, said thepresident's team was "caught flat-footed."

Biden's pitch underscores a major shift by both majorparties away from embracing globalization and freetrade and toward protecting American workers andrevitalizing struggling domestic industries. Thosetrends have been accelerated by the coronaviruspandemic, which has wreaked havoc on the economy.

"Biden does not accept the defeatist view that theforces of automation and globalization render ushelpless to retain well-paid union jobs and create moreof them here in America," says a statement by thecampaign detailing the plan.

The announcement suggests a recognition thatsupport for Trump's handling of the economy remainsa bright spot for the president in his otherwise weakpoll numbers. contd on Page 32

CHINA’S CLAIM ON GALWAN EXAGGERATED,COMPLETE DISENGAGEMENT MUST: INDIA

NEW DELHI (TIP): Terming China’s claim on theGalwan valley as exaggerated and untenable, India onThursday said it was necessary to ensure at the earliestcomplete disengagement of troops along the Line of ActualControl (LAC) and de-escalation.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took on itsChinese counterpart, who had quoted his Foreign Ministerand Special Representative (SR) for Border Affairs Wang Yias saying that the right and wrong of what happened in theGalwan valley was “very clear”.

Beijing had also sought to imply that it had ownershipover the Galwan valley where 20 Indian soldiers died in aclash with Chinese troops on June 15.

"COOKED: Survival by Zip Code"

I've made films that explore heedlesscorporate behavior, the long-term impactand bio-accumulation of toxic chemical

AS COVID-19 PANDEMIC COLLIDES WITHEXTREME HEAT AND A NATIONAL DEMAND FORRACIAL JUSTICE, OVER 82 CITIES, COUNTIES, &STATES HAVE RECENTLY DECLARED RACISM APUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE, INCLUDING BOSTON,CHARLOTTE, DALLAS, DENVER, DURHAM,HARTFORD, KANSAS CITY, MILWAUKEE,PITTSBURGH & MORE ON THE WAY

At a moment when potentially historic heat wave isexpected to hit more than two-thirds of the continentalU.S. in the first several weeks of July, according to theNational Weather Service Climate Prediction Center

"COOKED: Survival by Zip Code" is Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Judith Helfand's ("The Uprising of'34", the Sundance award winning and 2x Emmynominated "Blue Vinyl", its Peabody Award-winningprequel "A Healthy Baby Girl", and "Everything's Cool")searing investigation into the politics of "disaster" - byway of the deadly 1995 Chicago heat wave, in which 739residents perished (mostly Black and living in the city's

poorest neighborhoods). The film blends the reportingof the 1995 Chicago heat wave with a potent argumentthat the best preparation for a disaster may start withinvesting in racial and economic justice.

Asking open-ended questions that push people todeeply consider what it might mean to redefine theterm "disaster" and reframe the concept of "resilience,"Helfand forges inextricable connections between thecataclysmic natural disasters we're willing to see andprepare for and the slow-motion disasters we're not -that is until an extreme weather event hits and they aremade exponentially more deadly and visible. Using acombination of chutzpah, humor and candor, Helfanddelves deep into one of our nation's biggest growthindustries: disaster preparedness.

Whether it's a deadly heat wave in Chicago orHurricanes Katrina, Sandy, Harvey or Maria, these

disasters reveal the ways in which class, race, and zipcode predetermine who lives and dies everyday, regardless of the weather and who gets hurt the worstand first in the wake of an "official disaster." In"COOKED" Helfand challenges herself and ultimatelyall of us to respond to the man-made disasters takingplace in towns and cities across the country before thenext unprecedented "natural" disaster hits.

Judith Helfand, director-producer of 'Cooked' says"The COVID-19 virus, the current crisis that is literallystopping our world dead in its tracks, is much deadlierfor some than others, and points to the underlying crisisand disease of acute systemic disparity and racism thatis there everyday and has been killing people daily fordecades. All the stats were there. The numbers forpeople and neighborhoods dying from or being crippledby asthma, diabetes, and heart disease and we did notmake that an emergency worthy of a declaration or astimulus package. If we had, this virus would not bekilling some neighborhoods more than others, peoplewould have been stronger to start with. COVID-19 is notan equal opportunity killer."

" WE ARE THE RADICAL MONARCHS "NATIONAL BROADCAST DEBUT PBS DOCUMENTARY

SERIES POV AND POV.ORG - JULY 20

We Are The Radical Monarchs" follows the twotrailblazing, queer women of color whocreated The Radical Monarchs, a more diverse

and inclusive alternative to the scout movement. Thefilm is set in Oakland, a city with a deep history ofsocial justice movements.

With bullhorns and protest signs at the ready, Co-Founders Anayvette Martinez and Marilyn Hollinquestjuggle the challenges to grow their organization after aviral explosion of interest in the Radical Monarch'smission to create and inspire a new generation ofactivists. The film takes us on a journey following thefirst troop of Radical Monarchs for over three years -before and after the 2016 Presidential election - at thefront lines of social justice as they complete units onsuch subjects as LGBTQ allyship, environment racism, and disability justice. The film also documents what itlooks like for the Co-Founders to respond to the national

and international desire for troops - to go from a groupof ten girls, to starting a movement.

"This is a women of color empowerment story at itscore; as an intersectional feminist and a filmmaker, it ismy intention to amplify women and girls' voices. TheRadical Monarchs give me hope for the future, and withthis film I can share that hope," said filmmaker LindaGoldstein Knowlton.

Co-Founder Martinez was inspired to create a diverseand inclusive group for her daughter, Lupita, and othergirls of color. Martinez and Hollinquest's work isanchored in the belief that adolescent girls of colorneed dedicated spaces and that the foundation for thisinnovative work must also be rooted in fierce inter-dependent sisterhood, self-love, and hope.

Instead of selling cookies, these formidable andoutspoken girls earn badges for units such as "RadicalBeauty," "Radical Bodies," and "Radical Roots." Atypical troop meeting may focus on discussing whatdefines Pride, or the gender spectrum, or what it meansto be an ally. Or it may find the girls meeting with anoriginal member of the Black Panthers, getting intoparks and the streets for protests, taking part in BlackLives Matter marches or even taking a road trip to theCalifornia legislature to advocate for highly pressingissues in their communities for their "RadicalAdvocacy" badge. For the inquisitive young women who

make up the first Radical Monarchs troop - including,eight-year-old Amia and Martinez's ten-year-olddaughter, Lupita - radical means respecting otherswhile still standing up for yourself.

"Radical means just being yourself. What makes youunique, what makes you pretty, what makes you cool. That's what radical is," says Amia.

And while it may be surprising to hear such confidentdeclarations coming from a group of tweens, it's only asample of the inner strength, the personal growth, andthe social awareness "We Are The Radical Monarchs"reveals.

"The dynamic young women in this film are thefuture, and the Co-Founders embody strength, vision, perseverance, and radical love that we should all aspireto. I'm so proud to celebrate their stories and importantperspectives in the season opener for the 33rd season ofPOV," said Justine Nagan, executiveproducer/executive director of POV/ AmericanDocumentary.

1939-2020

JAGDEEP: SOORMA BHOPALI LIVES ONVeteran actor and comedian

Jagdeep, who is best known for hisrole in ‘Soorma Bhopali’ in 1975

Ramesh Sippy's Sholay, died on 8 July2020 (Wednesday) in Mumbai due to age-related health issues. He was 81. He actedin around 400 films.

It’s well known that Jagdeep, bornSyed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, joined theHindi film industry as a child artiste, and that his comic timing made himpopular as a comedian through most ofhis adult career. But not enough noticewas paid to the fact that he moved welland had a good singing voice. His briefstint as a leading man didn’t use theseskills: those films, especially AVM’sthree-hankie weepie Bhabhi, were heavywith emotion. And so he tipped over intocomedy, and there he stayed, cementinghis place as one of Bollywood’s top comicartistes.

You think of Jagdeep, and the firstthing that comes to mind is SoormaBhopali, the Sholay (1975) character whobecame so wildly popular that it nearlyeclipsed everything else he did. Flashback to that scene in which our heroes,Jai and Veeru, come upon SoormaBhopali telling a bunch of spellboundlisteners of how he beat the two with astick, and how he’s found out: his paan-stained teeth, that Bhopali lilt, andcomfort in a role meant strictly forlaughs, made his Soorma unforgettable.

Too many of the nearly 400 roles, oversix decades, that Jagdeep did wereinterchangeable. Broad, loud strokes forthe comic folk meant that their trackswere filled with gags, pratfalls, andbanana-peel humour: that was prettymuch the way of the comedy from the 50sto the 80s. A whole series of talentedcomics, including Johnny Walker,Mukri, Paintal, Mehmood, RajendraNath, Keshto Mukherjee, were type-cast,and forced to that one thing that theaudience wanted them to do. Jagdeep toofell into that trap of repeating himself, often using the same grins-and-grimaces,but he could always be relied upon tomake us laugh.

Some of his early roles are memorable.Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zameen and GuruDutt’s Aar Paar, as well as Hum PanchiEk Daal Ke showcased his talent: he wasa complete natural, and he had theability to be droll, and both those giftscame in handy in his long career. Ceiling Fans & Light Fixtures

Don't just take a normal cloth duster and place theladder to clean ceiling fans or light fixtures. You canlose balance and if you are not tall enough, it makesthings more difficult. So instead get a bendable duster. The advantage here is that you can bend the duster andclean. Once you are done cleaning, remove themicrofiber cover and put it in the machine to wash.

WallsYou may not have realised this but your walls too

accumulate dust other than the spider webs. Wipe yourfingers on your wall and see the shade difference. Sodusting your walls is important especially when theyare light in colour. Don't just take a broom and clean asthat makes them dirtier. Take a flat head mop, amicrofiber cloth and spray on some water on it. Make a‘W’ pattern while cleaning as this will save your timeand you will be able to cover more space.

Door Frames, Corners & Moldings Cleaning door frames etc can be a task and this is

where you see a lot of spiderwebs as well. Take an oldsock that has lost elasticity or you don't use it and poutit on a pole and swipe from end to end. Voila! it will beclean in no time.

Delicate Antiques & ShowpiecesSpray some water on a small paintbrush or a makeup

brush and clean the delicate areas of your antiquepieces or carved decor items.

Bathroom Vents

This is one place that accumulates a lot of dust andgrime. Clean them with a vacuum cleaner with thebrush attached to it and watch all the dust vanish.

Dusting DirectionDust falls from top to bottom so first always clean the

highest point. Another way is spiral cleaning where yougo clockwise especially on moldings and paintingframes.

Microfiber ClothsDitch those cotton rags and get your hands on

microfiber cloths. They lessen the cleaning time and doa thorough job. These cloths are electrostaticallycharged, so they attract dust. They are highly absorbentand give you streak-free surfaces.

CONNOISSEUR’SCHOICE

By Tript Arora

Pa n - s e a r e dmushrooms areoffered as

snacks in bistros andbars. They are servedas sides to sizzlersand steaks as well.Alternatively, theycan be used in saladsor as pizza topping. They can even belayered on top of abread toast alongwith mozzarellacheese to make aquick, healthy snackfor kids. Mushroomsare a rich source of the B Vitamins. Mushrooms areexcellent for your gut, nervous system and hormonalsystem. Most people, be it vegetarians or non-vegetarians, like mushrooms.

Today, I am bringing to you a variety of pan-searedmushrooms with a dash of pepper and garlic.Mushrooms come in a many variety but we are usingbutton mushrooms today.

We needButton mushrooms- 200 grams, small size, Garlic- 10

pods, Baby onions- 5 to 6 cut into halves, Black pepper(freshly ground)- 1 tablespoon, Green chillies cut into 6pieces diagonally- 2, Oil of your choice (i prefer olive oil)-1 teaspoon, Butter- 2 teaspoon, Oregano- 1 teaspoon,Vinegar- half teaspoon

Lets begin Wash mushrooms in water to remove dirt and grime.

After cleaning, remove from water and pat-drythem with a towel.

Crush the garlic pods in mortel and pestle. Do notgrind them. Heat a pan, add butter and oil. Avoidburning butter. Immediately Add the crushedgarlic to it and saute for 1 minute. Do not let it burn.Add the cut onions, saute for maximum 1 minute.Do not let it change colour as it will cook furthermore with the mushrooms too.

Add whole mushrooms, only if a piece looks very bigas compared to the rest, then you can cut it to makeit look similar to the group. Otherwise wholemushrooms are the best. Add black pepper. Nowsaute continuously on high flame. The mushroomwill release water. When the released water driesup, this means that the mushrooms are done.

Add salt and slit green chillis. Mix well.Add oregano.Mix well. Add vinegar. Mix well. Turn off theflame. Pan-seared mushrooms are ready. Enjoy! You can eat it alone like a snack or inside asandwich. Or mixed with salad, whichever wayyou like.

Tips Do not keep the mushrooms immersed in water for

long, as they soak water like sponge. Salt should beparticularly added only at the end.

If salt is added beforehand then the mushroomswill release a crazy amount of water and willshrink in size. Mushrooms should not be over-cooked.

If they are, they will lose all their moisture andwill taste very dry. Do not place the lid at anystage, otherwise there will be too much water tohandle.

COMMON HYPERTENSIONDRUGS MAY HELP LOWERCOLORECTAL CANCER RISK

Medications commonly prescribed to helppeople treat high blood pressure have beenfound with anti-cancer effects. Researchers

said that exposure to the drugs could help reduce therisk of developing colorectal cancer.

The new study, published in the journalHypertension, looked into the effects of angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-i) and angiotensinII receptor blocker (ARB) medications. They aredesigned to manage conditions like heart failure, highblood pressure and heart disease.

ACE-i and ARB work by blocking the chemical calledangiotensin, which causes arteries to become narrow.Doctors usually provide these medications to helppeople lower their blood pressure.

Researchers have long been exploring the effects ofACE inhibitors and ARBs on cancer development. However, earlier studies faced challenges such ashaving a small number of patients, short-term follow-ups and conflicting findings, according to Wai Leung, aclinical professor of medicine at the University ofHong Kong.

The latest study tried to address those issues. Itlooked into health records of 187,897 adult patients inHong Kong and extended the analysis from 2005 to 2013.

All patients had a negative baseline colonoscopy forcolorectal cancer. The disease ranks as the third mostcommon cancer around the world and is the secondleading cause of cancer death.

Researchers found that the patients who tookhypertension medications, such as ACE-i and ARBs,had a 22 percent lower risk of having colorectal cancer.Majority of those who experienced anti-cancer effectswere aged 55 or older and those with a history of colonpolyps.

"Our results provide new insights on a potential roleof these medications for colorectal cancer prevention,"Leung, one of the study authors, said in a statement."This is the first study to show the potential beneficialeffects of ACE inhibitors and ARBs on colorectalcancer development, based on a large group of patientswho were colorectal cancer-free at the beginning of thestudy."

However, the researchers noted more studies areneeded to verify the potential benefits of hypertensionmedications on colorectal cancer risk. Leung hopesthat their findings will soon guide doctors inconsidering ACE-i and ARBs for patients with highblood pressure, heart failure and kidney diseases.

Scientists rule out asthma astrigger for Covid-19 severity

Asthma does not appear to increase the risk for aperson contracting Covid-19 or affect its severity, according to new research.

The team from Rutgers University in the US foundthat people with asthma – even those with diminishedlung function who are being treated to manageasthmatic inflammation – seem to be no worse affectedby SARS-CoV-2 than a non-asthmatic person.

“Older age and conditions such as heart disease, highblood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and obesity are reported risk factors for thedevelopment and progression of COVID-19,” saidReynold A. Panettieri Jr, a pulmonary critical carephysician and director of the Rutgers Institute forTranslational Medicine and Science.

However, asthma is not yet proven as one such riskfactor.

“There is limited data as to why this is the case — ifit is physiological or a result of the treatment tomanage the inflammation,” said Panettieri Jr in apaper published in the Journal of Allergy and ClinicalImmunology.

Inhaled corticosteroids, which are commonly used toprotect against asthma attacks, also may reduce thevirus’ ability to establish an infection.

However, studies have shown that steroids maydecrease the body’s immune response and worsen the

inflammatory response.Children and young adults with asthma suffer mainly

from allergic inflammation, while older adults whoexperience the same type of airway inflammation canalso suffer from eosinophilic asthma — a more severeform.

In these cases, people experience abnormally highlevels of a type of white blood cell that helps the bodyfight infection, which can cause inflammation in theairways, sinuses, nasal passages and lower respiratorytract, potentially making them more at risk for aserious case of COVID-19.

The mission also known as Mangalyaan wasinitially meant to last six months, but subsequentlyISRO had said it had enough fuel for it to last “manyyears.”

THUNDERBOLT 4: THE NEXT-GEN HIGH-SPEED PERIPHERAL INTERFACE

Intel on Wednesday announcedThunderbolt 4, the next version ofThunderbolt interface which

combines video and data on a singlecable. The Santa Clara-headquarteredchipmaker released the specifications ofThunderbolt 4, but the interface will onlycome to PCs towards the end of this year. With the USB-C interface becoming thego-to USB connector on most high-endlaptops today, why do manufacturersneed to switch to Thunderbolt? What isthe advantage of Thunderbolt 4? Willyour next laptop come with Thunderbolt4? We answer all your questions in thisexplainer.

The history of ThunderboltIntel debuted Thunderbolt way back in

2009. Born as an Intel project called LightPeak, Thunderbolt is the one port to rulethem all. The idea behind theThunderbolt interface has always beento create a proprietary data and videotransfer protocol. Here’s how Intel describes

Thunderbolt:

Thunderbolt is the name of the high-speed protocol that dynamically switchesto adjust data and video bandwidthdepending on the device that you’veplugged in or the application that you’redoing.

Apple was the first company toexclusively use Thunderbolt in MacBookPro in 2011. During the same year, Applelaunched a Thunderbolt-capable iMacs.Unfortunately, other than Apple, veryfew PC vendors lapped up Intel’sThunderbolt. One big hindrance thatstopped major PC makers usingThunderbolt is that they need to obtain

certification from Intel. The high costalso stopped PC makers from adding amultipurpose connector into theirlaptops. Many also feared that Intelwould jack up the price once the protocolbecame accepted in the industry, after allthe chipmaker owned the standard, spec, and even supply.

Over the years, Thunderbolt hasevolved. The original supportedThunderbolt 10Gbit/s of bandwidth andused the Mini DisplayPort connector. Itwas faster than USB 3.0, which couldtransfer data at speeds up to 5Gbps.Thunderbolt 2 was announced in 2013,and offered 20Gbit/s. Again, Apple wasamong the first companies to releaseThunderbolt 2-capable products. Its 2013Retina Macbook Pro laptop became thefirst device to use Thunderbolt 2.

What is Thunderbolt 4?Thunderbolt 4, as the name suggests, is

the fourth version of the Thunderbolt

interface. It won’t be faster attransferring data than Thunderbolt 3which is capable of data transfer speedsof 40Gbit/s, but offers additionalfeatures. These include support for two4K displays or one 8K display(Thunderbolt 3 supports one 4K monitorat 60 Mhz) and fast storage speeds of 3000megabytes per second. With Thunderbolt4, users also get up to four ports – oneconnecting up to the computer and threemore ports that will downstream whenyou connect other devices to(Thunderbolt 3 had either one port ortwo ports). And for the first time,Thunderbolt 4 will support universal40GB/s cables up to 2 meters in length.

Which PCs includeThunderbolt 4?

Intel says Thunderbolt 4 will first besupported by its upcoming Tiger Lakemobile processors, slated to launch later

this year. This means we will seeThunderbolt 4-powered PCs startshipping either towards the end of theyear or early next year.

Is Thunderbolt/ Thunderbolt 4 thesame as USB-C?

No. Thunderbolt and USB-C look thesame because both have the samereversible port, but they are different.Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 4 offers extrafeatures in comparison to USB-C, whichis widely adopted by PC vendors andaccessory makers. The point toremember is that USB-C does not matchThunderbolt in terms of transfer speeds.Thunderbolt 4 ports technically arebackward-compatible with USB-Cdevices. However, not all USB-C portssupport Thunderbolt 4 technology.

What’s the difference betweenUSB 4 and Thunderbolt 4?

Late last year, the USB PromoterGroup announced the finalspecifications of USB 4, the next versionof Universal Serial Bus, or USB ascommonly known. USB 4 introduces anumber of new features like it isdesigned to work in the same-shaped portas USB-C, transfer speeds of up to40GBps, backward compatibility withUSB 3 and 2 devices, and compatibilitywith Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 3devices.

Sure USB 4 is more advanced than theother generations of USB but both aretwo different protocols. It is important toknow that Thunderbolt 4 is built on PCIExpress (PCIe), meaning it moves largeamounts of data very quickly. USB 4doesn’t use PCIe.

According to Dun andBradstreet’s Country Risk andGlobal Outlook Report, that covered132 countries, the wider globalcontext remains sombre and theglobal economy will not reach pre-pandemic levels of activity againbefore 2022.

“D&B is currently forecastingthat the global economy willcontract by 5.2 per cent in 2020 - thebiggest decline since the SecondWorld War and a far strongercontraction than the 1.7 per centrecorded in 2009 during the globalfinancial crisis,” the report said. The Asia Pacific region is unlikelyto shake off the economic effectsbefore the end of 2020, it added.

“Widespread quantitative easingmeans that financial asset pricesglobally are not reflecting the shockto fundamentals. But with manycountries easing their lockdowns, amore varied picture of upgradesand downgrades has emerged,”Dun & Bradstreet Chief EconomistArun Singh said.

Singh further noted that“worryingly, a sharp recession isstill forecast, and we expect that theworld economy will not attain pre-pandemic levels of activity before2022.” The report said any recoveryinto 2021 (even without a secondbout of the pandemic) is going to be

curtailed by several factors.Foremost will be the presence ofdegrees of social distancing(despite the easing of lockdowns)and higher levels of post-lockdownunemployment and poverty.

Meanwhile, the number of casesaround the world linked to COVID-19 has crossed 1.18 crore and thedeath toll has topped 5.44 lakh. InIndia, the death toll due to thedisease rose to 20,642 and thenumber of infections increased to7,42,417 on Wednesday.

Singh further said India’seconomy is expected to contractthis fiscal year after four decades ofpositive growth. “In March, wedowngraded India’s rating to DB5cfrom DB4d - both the magnitude ofthe downgrade and the risk level

are the highest since 1994,” Singhnoted.

DB5 means high risk and denotesthat “considerable uncertainty isassociated with expected returns.Businesses are advised to limittheir exposure and/or select highrisk transactions only.” Dun &Bradstreet’s Country RiskIndicator provides a comparative,cross-border assessment of the riskof doing business in a country. Therisk indicator is divided into sevenbands, ranging from DB1 to DB7,with DB1 being lowest risk.

Each band is subdivided intoquartiles (a-d), with ‘a’representing slightly less risk than‘b’ (and so on). Only the DB7indicator is not divided intoquartiles.

ASTROLOGER NASTUR BEJAN DARUWALLA

Saptarishi are the seven greatest sagesof the Vedic realm. They haveattained a semi-immortal status, that

of an exceedingly long lifespan due to theiryogic power and by the power of theirpenance. The seven holy sages wereassigned to be present through the fourgreat ages, to guide the human race. Theseseven sages or Sapta Rishis worked closelywith Lord Shiva to maintain the balanceon Earth.

They are the seven mind-born sons ofBrahma who live for a period of timeknown as a manvantara (306,720,000 EarthYears). During this period of time, theyserve as representatives of Brahma and atthe end of a manvantara, the universe getsdestroyed and Saptarishi merge in Godand the task of filling the Earth is given tonewly appointed Saptarishi.

All the Saptarishi are Brahmarishiswhich means they have completelyunderstood the meaning of Brahman.Usually, one cannot rise to the level of aBrahmarishi through merit alone, sincethe order was created divinely and isappointed by Lord Brahma. However,Vishwamitra rose to the position of aBrahmarishi through his own merit alone. He performed meditation and austerities(Tapasya) for tens of thousands of yearsand as a result, he was awarded the rank ofBrahmarishi from Bramha himself.

Brahmarishis are so powerful that theyare capable of defeating every weapon onearth, can forecast the future, and are notinfluenced by the circle of life and death.Saptarishis are greater even than thedevtas in power and piety are the highestin rank over Devatas and otherclassifications of Rishis such as Rajarishiand Maharishi.

Maharishi means ‘great sage’ inSanskrit and refers to one who has greatlyexpanded and refined senses. Their thirdeye is completely open and their intuitionis used to its fullest capacity. Theirattention and focus encompass the entireuniverse and yet they can still maintainincredibly precise detail in actions andthoughts. Rajarishi means ‘royal sage’ inSanskrit. Biden releases U.S.-centeredeconomic plan, challenging

Trump's 'America First' agendaAnd it reflects the success of Trump's longtime

message that protecting American workers is moreimportant than ensuring a free flow of trade.

Trump's rise in 2016 was built heavily on promises ofbringing back American jobs, as well as blamingimmigrants for hurting American workers. Aspresident, he has stoked a trade war with China andimposed tariffs that flew in the face of his party'sorthodoxy. Biden, who once supported the NorthAmerican Free Trade Agreement and Trans-PacificPartnership, has focused his campaign on prioritizingAmerican industries, following the lead of Sen. BernieSanders (I-Vt.), the democratic socialist who was his toprival for the Democratic nomination, and Sen. ElizabethWarren (D-Mass.) who released a "Plan For EconomicPatriotism" during the primary and has undergonevetting by Biden's campaign to be his running mate.

Biden and Warren's teams consulted closely on thenew plan, according to two people with knowledge ofthe situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymityto describe private talks.

Biden's plan also reflects the growing alarm sparkedby the coronavirus pandemic about the inability ofAmerican companies to produce enough medicalsupplies during a national emergency.

His new platform focuses heavily on using the powerof the federal government to promote a U.S. domesticmanufacturing base. He is advocating a $400 billionprocurement initiative over four years to spur demandfor American products and services, as well as a $300billion investment in U.S. research and breakthroughtechnologies. Half of the $300 billion is in clean-energyinitiatives that were previously announced, thecampaign said.

Before Biden spoke, he toured the plant with Sen.Robert P. Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) and plant owner RobertMcGregor. "How are you, man?" Biden asked a worker."I keep distance," the worker said. Biden wore a facemask throughout the tour.

Later, he delivered his remarks outside at a coveredloading dock. Circles were placed in front of his lecternto encourage listeners to stay within them andmaintain social distancing. Reporters had theirtemperatures taken and were asked coronavirusscreening questions as they entered.

The plan, which represents one of Biden's mostdetailed general election policy prescriptions, also callsfor the government to launch a 100-day "supply chainreview" that could require federal agencies to buy onlymedical supplies and other goods manufactured in theUnited States. On the Republican side, White Houseadvisers and allies worried about Biden's "BuyAmerica" push, with Bannon saying on his radioprogram that the Democrat's rollout could help him insuch states as Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which Trump narrowly won in major 2016 upsets.

"This is very disturbing. .?.?. They are essentiallytrying to steal the Trump program of 2016 and steal thatplaybook. For some reason, the White House and thecampaign have been caught flat-footed," Bannon said."Biden has very smart people around him, particularlyon the economic side."

Trump aides said the president remains the obviousperson to reignite the economy as he has done before."President Trump's policies of lower taxes, deregulation, reciprocal trade and energy

independence built a booming economy once, and theywill do so again under his leadership," said Judd Deere,a White House spokesman.

White House officials led by senior Trump adviserPeter Navarro have drafted an executive orderrequiring federal agencies to buy medical supplies andpharmaceuticals produced in America.

That executive order has languished for months, however, amid objections by some of Trump's othersenior advisers, including Treasury Secretary StevenMnuchin and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, whohave warned that it could lead China to limit the supplyof personal protective equipment, or PPE, that it issending to the United States.

Some analysts said Navarro's executive order couldnow be signed swiftly, but it remained unclearThursday when or if that would happen.

Both campaigns are gearing up for a clash over theeconomy, a normally dominant theme in presidentialelections. Trump argues that he built a boomingeconomy before the coronavirus outbreak and could doit again. Biden blames Trump for his erratic reaction tothe pandemic and frequent flouting of public healthadvice, which he says fueled the alarming rate ofinfections and badly damaged the economy as a result.

More broadly, Biden, who holds a significant lead inthe polls, is seeking to close off any possible openingsfor Trump to make the race more competitive. In themonths ahead, he plans to unveil proposals oninfrastructure, caregiving and education, and racialequality, all part of what he bills as the "Build BackBetter" plan.

In Thursday's proposal, Biden is calling for closingloopholes around existing "Buy American" clauses;eliminating waivers in Buy American provisions; andcracking down on false advertising of "Buy American"goods. To finance the ongoing costs of his economicagenda, Biden's campaign says he will reverse some ofTrump's tax cuts for corporations and impose"common-sense tax reforms that finally make sure thewealthiest Americans pay their fair share." Thecampaign declined to provide a more detailedaccounting of how it would pay for the $700 billion inspending it is laying out Thursday.

A senior Biden campaign official said more specificdetails would be released once the full plan is out, speaking on the condition of anonymity because thecampaign did not authorize the person to speak on therecord. Those details would include a stimulusinvestment, which Biden believes will be needed, andcontinuing costs, the official said.

Biden often touts his central role in the Obamaadministration, but he has been less eager to tout theadministration's championing of the Trans-PacificPartnership (TPP), which proved controversial with theparty's union base. Labor leaders said it did too little torequire America's partners improve theirenvironmental and labor standards.

Trump highlighted the shortcomings of the TPP andother trade deals in his 2016 campaign and rejected itupon taking office. "Trade negotiations over big tradedeals is something that in sequence will follow adramatic set of domestic investments," said the seniorBiden campaign official.

Biden has said he wants to renegotiate theagreement, which includes several Asian countries andwhich supporters say could serve as a bulwark againstChina's influence. Thursday's plan calls for using taxdollars to "stand up to the Chinese government's abuses, insist on fair trade, and extend opportunity to allAmericans." (Read full story at

HOLDER WINS EARLY BATTLE WITH STOKES ASWINDIES TAKE CONTROL

SOUTHAMPTON (TIP): WestIndies captain Jason Holder took acareer-best 6-42 and won the firstround of his private duel withEngland allrounder Ben Stokes asthe touring side took control of thefirst Test at the Ageas Bowl onThursday.

Holder capitalized on morefavourable bowling conditionsunder overcast skies on Day 2 toclaim his seventh five-wicket haul —and sixth in his last 10 tests — andhelp dismiss England for 204.

One of his wickets was Stokes, thestand-in England captain, who wasdropped twice before getting drawnforward by Holder and edgingbehind for a team-high 43.

Shannon Gabriel used his paceand fuller length to nab the firstthree England wickets and then thelast — of James Anderson, who puton a potentially crucial 30 runs withDom Bess (31 not out) for the finalwicket — to finish with 4-62.

The West Indies was 57-1 in replyafter 19.3 overs when bad lightstopped play just before 6 p.m. localtime in Southampton. The teamsnever got back on the field.

Holder vs. Stokes has been billedas the biggest subplot of the seriesand the world’s top two allroundershave already made their mark on aseries being played in an isolatedenvironment with no fans because

of the pandemic. While Stokes rode his luck

somewhat in scoring highest forEngland, Holder immediatelysettled into a rhythm with hisaccurate fast-medium bowling to ripthrough the middle and bottomorder after the hosts resumed on 35-1.

In one spell, when Holder took hisfifth wicket by reviewing an lbwdecision against Jofra Archer (0)that was initially given not out, theWest Indies captain took 3-1 in 14

balls. “My patience has definitelyincreased,” Holder said. “Before, Iwas trying to bowl too manydeliveries in one spell.

“I look at consistency, andpatience was one of the things I waslacking. Using the crease issomething I strive to do — and usingthe angles at the point of delivery. When you’re not as quick as somepeople, you’ve got to be skilful.”Holder also said he definitelywouldn’t have batted first had WestIndies won the toss.

Djokovic accuses critics of ‘witch-hunt’, undecided on US Open

BELGRADE (TIP): Novak Djokovic has accusedcritics of subjecting him to a "witch-hunt" after hisregional Adria Tour tennis event ended in a novelcoronavirus fiasco and said he was still uncertainwhether he would play at the August 31-September 13US Open.

Images and videos of the players hugging at the net, playing basketball together and partying at thetournament were posted on social media.

World No. 1 Djokovic, fellow Serb Viktor Troicki,Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and Croatian Borna Coricall tested positive for the virus and the event had to becalled off.

Djokovic, who tested positive for COVID-19 after theAdria Tour's second leg in Croatia, pulled no punches inslamming his peers and pundits who said he wasirresponsible to stage the event amid the pandemic.

"I can only see criticism lately and much of it ismalicious," Djokovic told Wednesday's issue of Serbia'sdaily Sportski Zurnal.

"It's obviously more than just criticism, it's like anagenda and a witch-hunt are on. Someone has to takethe fall, a big name,” he said.

"I still haven't decided whether I will play in the U.S.Open, the upsurge in registered COVID-19 cases in theUnited Staes and New York in particular are notplaying into the event's hands," added Djokovic whowas back in training on Tuesday with Troicki.

Djokovic tested negative after the second test he tooklast week and, having conceded after the failedtournament that it came too soon, he reiterated that hehad acted in good faith.

"My intention was pure, I was whole-heartedlycommitted to organising a humanitarian event to helpplayers and tennis federations in the (Balkan) region,"he said.

"We complied with all the laws and regulations. Butwe've learned our lessons and some things could haveprobably been done in a different way."

WASHINGTON (TIP): The surge incoronavirus cases in the United States, which has set new daily-case recordsfive times in the past nine days, is beingdriven largely by states that wereamong the first to ease virusrestrictions as they moved to reopentheir economies.

Florida has seen its average newdaily cases increase more than tenfoldsince it began reopening in early May.Cases in Arizona have jumped by 858percent since beginning to reopen May8. Cases in Texas have risen by 680percent since beginning to reopen May1.

Epidemiologists had warned thatreopening could lead to waves of newinfections if it was done before thevirus was contained, and before contacttracing was sufficiently ramped upenough to contain future outbreaks.

The trajectory taken by many statesthat pushed to reopen early offers a

cautionary tale.South Carolina, one of the first states

to let retail stores reopen, has seen itsaverage daily case count rise to 1,570, upfrom 143 from when the state began toreopen in late April, a 999 percent

increase. And in Georgia, where thegovernor's moves to reopen swiftly inlate April were criticized as tooaggressive by Mr. Trump - who hadgenerally been pushing states to movefaster to reopen - cases have risen by 245

percent. Now the U.S. is debating when and

how to reopen school classrooms -which Mr. Trump is pushing forstrongly, even as school districts, teachers and some parents expressconcerns - and which steps should betaken by states that have become hotspots, from reimposing restrictions toordering people to wear masks.

Many of the states that bore the bruntof cases in March and April but wereslower to reopen have seen significantdecreases in reported cases since.Average daily cases in New York aredown 52 percent since the state began toreopen in late May, and they are down83 percent in Massachusetts.

There are exceptions, though.California, once seen as a model forhow to contain the virus, has seen analarming increase in new cases, whichare up 275 percent since May 25.
