Transcript of GROUP A - Football Association of Ireland
ON behalf of the Football Association of Ireland I am very pleased to write these words of welcome to the FAI ‘Cool Kids Guide to Euro 2016’ booklet.
There is fantastic excitement in the country ahead of the tournament and I know you will all be cheering on the Boys in Green when they face Sweden in their opening game of the tournament in St Denis on June 13.
One of the great things about sport it is that it brings people together and the country is never more united than when Ireland are playing in a major football tournament.
I’m sure your relatives or neighbours would have plenty of stories about the excitement generated back in the days when Jack Charlton was the Ireland manager and the Irish team played at Euro 88.
It’s been nearly 30 years since we first played in the finals of the UEFA European Championships and now it’s your turn to enjoy the experience of seeing the country take on the best in Europe.
Of course Ireland has changed a lot since then and now there are people living here from across the world. Championships such as Euro 2016 provides a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about the other nations in Europe and this booklet can help increase your knowledge through the medium of football.
For those young players who dream of becoming a professional footballer our message is to take your education as seriously as your sport and we encouraging all young players to study hard.
The FAI is committed to developing football at all levels and we would encourage schools to look at ways they can get involved by participating in our FAI Primary School 5s and FAI Primary School Futsal events.
We all want a healthy lifestyle for our children and what better way to encourage them to get active than by playing football, over the next few weeks can you organise a mini Euro 2016 tournament in your own school?
Here’s to a great summer for Irish football!Yours in sport,
John DelaneyChief Executive OfficerFootball Association of Ireland

WELCOME
Message from John Delaney
Does your school take part in our national Primary School programmes?
Hi! I’m Super Victor, and I’m the official mascot of Euro 2016. I’ll be giving you fascinating facts about
all 24 countries in the competition, so keep an eye
out for me!
FAI Primary School FutsalOur Futsal programme is a participation initiative for 3rd and 4th class students. Futsal is an indoor 5-a-side game and our FAI Development Officers run numerous local competitions October, November and December each year.
As well as our Primary School 5s and Primary School Futsal programmes there are many other local initiatives so please contact the FAI Development Officer in your area to find out more.
Hello and welcome to the FAI ‘Cool Kids Guide to Euro 2016’. 24 teams from across Europe will compete in France this June to be crowned UEFA European Champions and we are encouraging school children across Ireland to learn more about the countries taking part.
We have developed this booklet as a fun way of learning through football, Read some interesting facts about the culture and history of each nation participating in Euro 2016, as well as the key football information for each team before the real action gets underway in France.
We have included a lesson on French geography and a basic introduction to the French language through words we associate with football. After the children have studied each country we have some fun classroom games that can be completed such as: a crossword, a word search, a quiz, and drawing and creative writing exercises. We are also encouraging schools to make the 24 national flags as an art project to display in your school.
Finally, we want you to create your own mini Euro 2016 as part of your PE class or school sports day and here is how it works: divide your classes into equal teams, name the teams after Euro 2016 countries and use our fun wallchart to help you complete all the fixtures.
To be in with a chance to win equipment for your school as well as an exclusive FAI coaching day just email us the details of what your school is doing to celebrate Euro 2016. Have fun and enjoy learning through football!
Yours in sport,
Mark ScanlonFAI National Co-ordinator for Schools and Third Level FootballPhone: 086-7954353Email: [email protected]

FAI Primary School 5sThis programme is the largest of our Primary Schools competitions and this year we had almost 24,000 children from over 1,200 Primary Schools across Ireland competing in fun 5-a-side blitzes for 4th, 5th and 6th class students. The programme is open to all schools across Ireland and entries open in January with local competitions taking place in all 26 counties over the months of February, March and April. We have six sections to cater for Boys and Girls competitions in small, medium and large school categories. The county winners progress to regional and provincial finals with 24 provincial winners competing in the National Finals in the Aviva Stadium each May.

Wake up, Romanian, from the sleep of deathInto which you have been sunk by the barbaric tyrantsNow, or never, make a new fate for yourself, To which even your cruel enemies will bow.
Now or never let us give proof to the world That in these veins a Roman blood still flows,That in our chests we hold a name with pride,Victorious in battle, the name of Trajan!
Behold, great shadows, Mihai, Ștefan, Corvinus,The Romanian Nation, your great-grandchildren,With weapons in their arms, with your fire in their veins“Life in freedom or death!” shout all
Priests, lead with your crucifixes, for our army is Christian,The motto is Liberty and its goal is holy,Better to die in battle, in full glory,Than to once again be slaves upon our ancient ground!
