INTRODUCTION

Cavelossim is a village located in Salcete tehsil of South Goa district in Goa, India. The Town hosts a well-known beach at the southernmost tip of the Salcete beach stretch that starts from Majorda in the north to Cavelossim in the South. The Sal river flows into the Arabian Sea at the South of this Town. This town was the original abode of goddess Shri. Shantadurga located at Kawlem. Which is one of the largest temples in the state. The idol was taken from Cavelossim to Kawlem in Ponda Taluka (Antruz Mhal) during the Portuguese inquisition of Goa.

Demographics It is situated 16 km away from Margao, which is both district & sub district headquarter of Cavelossim village. The total geographical area of village is 834 hectares. According to Census 2011 information, Cavelossim has a total population of 1,955 peoples and there are about 481 houses. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Cavelossim had an average literacy rate of 90.35%, higher than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy was 93.12% and Female literacy 87.56%. 9.87% of the population was under 6 years of age.

Cavelossim Beach Cavelossim Beach is known for its contrasting black rocks and white sand. It is ranked 19th in Asia by trip adviser 2016 and 5th in India. Cavelossim Beach is located at 15 km south of Margao, the district headquarters of South Goa. Other neighboring beaches include Carmona beach to the north and Mobor beach to the South. Cavelossim beach is a beach with white sand and black lava rocks. The

beach lies in between the river Sal along the east and the Arabian sea to its west. Being a peaceful beach, Cavelossim attracts a lot of tourists.

Sports Like many other Goan villages, Cavelossim is most popular for football. Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim, a Football club based in Cavelossim represent them in Goa’s top tier league, the Goa Professional league. They play home matches at the Cavelossim Football ground. The football team were runners up in the league for the year 2018-2019. The club hosts many other sports activities for the villagers throughout the year.

Cavelossim Church The Church of Cavelossim dedicated to the Santa Cruz or Holy Cross, is not too complicated in its design, yet has a charm surrounding it. It has a simple and clean façade, and is almost a mixture of its parent church designs. The flat altar, detached canopies are some of the features taken from the earlier church designs.

Health 1Primary Health Sub-Centre, 1 Family Welfare Centre, 4 MBBS Doctor Practices, 2 Medical Shops are available in this village.

Agriculture Rice and coconuts are the primary agriculture commodities grow in this village. A section of the villagers also engages in cultivating various vegetables. The village has a private farm and spice plantation where visitors; local and foreign tour.

Drinking Water and Sanitation Tap water supply all-round the year and in summer available. Covered well and uncovered well are other Drinking water sources. Closed drainage system and open drainage system are available in this

village. House to house waste collection is available. There is system to collect garbage on street.

Communication Sub Post Office is available in this Village. Landline, Mobile Coverage and Internet Centre is available in this village.

Transportation Public Bus service is available. Private Bus Service and Taxi service is also available in this Village. Pucca road, Kuccha roads, waterways and footpath are other roads and transportation within the village.

Commerce ATM, Commercial Banks and Cooperative Bank is available in this Village.

Other Amenities This village has a 24 hours power, Anganwadi center, Birth and Death Registration office, Sports facilities, Library, Daily Newspaper and Polling station are the other Amenities in this village. In order to preserve the Culture and Heritage of Cavelossim, the Village Panchayat has constituted Village Development Committee for Foreseeing Development, restoring and preserving the age old lush green heritage of Cavelossim Village. The Village Panchayat along with Village Development Committee has taken the initiative to identify the places of Developing and propose the works to be taken which in turn will benefit the Villagers.

Ward no. I consists of sub wards like khandi-Bandoi and Tibet-passos

ward

This ward is located in the coastal zone. It has resorts and other

commercial establishments. It is one of the major revenues generating

wards of V.P. Cavelossim and is represented by Panchayat Member

Mr. James E. Barretto.

WARD NO. II MOBOR

Ward no. II is represented by Mr. Julio Fernandes. The ward is along

the coastline of Cavelossim Village and has some major resorts.

The traditional local communities form a large section of the

population. Traditional occupation is still seen in this ward.

WARD NO. III RODRIGUES WARD

Ward no. III is represented by Mrs. Cynthia Rodrigues. The ward has

more of residential units and some banks and General stores. Some

new works are proposed in this ward keeping in mind the practical

requirements of the ward.

WARD NO. IV BATTYWARD, DIASWARD,

GOMES WARD (PART)

BATTY WARD There is a small chapel and a cross which is century old. On the

northern side there is a pond called More Fondaro. There are 25

houses and population of this ward is 134 nos approximately, which consist of males 44 and Females 90.

DIAS WARD There are 19 Houses. Population of this ward is 67 nos approximately which consist of male 33 and Females 34.

GOMES WARD(PART) There are 7 houses and a training house namely Premdam for training the novices. Population of this ward is 30 nos approximately which

consist of male 12 and Females 18.

WARD NO. V IGREJA & SAICOVADO

IGREJA WARD There’s a HIV positive hospital known as ‘Asro’. There’s a Church namely Holy Cross Church. The Patron feast is celebrated on 3rd May.

A Cemetery, Parish Priest’s residence, a post office, a Health Centre,

presently Village Panchayat of Cavelossim, a bank and the office of Communidade of Cavelossim. There’s also a secondary school

namely Holy cross Institute Cavelossim which is run by D.S.E..

There’s a big playground namely Fr. Druston and Wellington ground which is run by Sta Cruz Club of Cavelossim. There’s a club house

wherein the functions are held. There are also general stores and Tea

shops. There are two monuments, Christ the king and St. Joseph Vaz and a grotto of Mother Mary. There are 30 houses belonging to

different communities. There is also a bandstand known as ‘pavilliao’.

SAICOVADO There’s a chapel known as St.Sebastian chapel which was built more

than 100 years ago wherein the annual feast is celebrated on 20th

January accompanied by colorful novenas known as ‘Luminarias’. There is a beach in the vicinity of the ward.

There are altogether 25 houses belonging to different communities.

The people of these two wards are engaged in different professions

and they celebrate the different festivals, according to their religion

with great pomp. They are peace loving people. The two wards are surrounded by fields, lake and a rivulet.

ward no. VI consists of sub-ward Tamborim and Afonso and is

represented by Mr. Desmond Dias. The ward has more of residential

units and some banks and General Stores.

WARD NO. VII KALVADDO, PATRECANTEM

Ward no. VII comprises of two sub-wards like Kalvaddo and

Patrecantem. It houses the Village Panchayat office. The Cavelossim

Police out-post is also situated in this ward. A semi-urban ward that

has a balance of residential and commercial units housing medical

stores, general stores, guesthouses, barbers shop and other vendors.

The ward has scope for new development and some priority

development works have been proposed in the current GPDP.

CAVELOSSIM POLICE OUTPOST

The main police station for Village Panchayat of Cavelossim

Jurisdiction is Colva Police station (Benaulim Constituency). The

village houses a police out-post in Patrecantem of ward no.7. it is

currently manned by a station incharge and police constable under the

supervision of Police Inspector and Colva PS.

CAVELOSSIM- ASSOLNA BRIDGE

The Cavelossim-Assolna Bridge is the main link to connect the two

villages. The bridge has increased the Village connectivity and has

decreased the distance and travel time while going to destinations in

the east of Cavelossim. The bridge was built in the year 2014, a

project of public works dept, Govt of Goa under the Minister ship of

Shri.Churchill Alemao.

FOCUSED GROUP DISCUSSION

A joint meeting of line departments of Village Development

Committee, Garbage Committee, Bio diversity committee, Village

Health and Sanitation Committee and locals was held and many

important discussions on village needs and plan was held.

The line departments have advised the V.P. to visit individual

websites for future requirements.

The Group discussion was effective and helped in the preparation of

GPDP.

CONCLUSION

The Gram Panchayat plan has been prepared on a realistic and need

based agenda. Village visits, interactions with villagers and focused

group discussions with various sub-committees, Govt. line

departments and Panchayat Members and Secretary has helped in

listing the works required to be taken up in the Village.

The Village Panchayat Office will do its best to execute the plan and

complete maximum works enlisted here.
