A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Every Day Counts- Please make sure your child is at school every day!

Our target is 100 % attendance for the year for every student.

2021 The Year of Reading

RA=>CA Across the last few days and into next week many of our children will have their reading assessed

using PM or Probe assessments. These assessments measure reading ability- knowledge of pho-

nemes, phonemic awareness, camera words, vocabulary, spelling, fluency and comprehension in all

its various forms. Many of our students have shown very good progress in the semester.

Reading is an immensely complex task for children (and for lots of adults) but most can become flu-ent readers in a short time. Just as we all can’t run as fast as Usain Bolt or swim as far as Grant Hack-ett some of us find reading easier and some much harder. The key is practise, practise, practise. And some help along the way!

How can you help as Parents, Grandparents and Carers? There are 5 easy steps which will help im-

measurably:

1. Talk to your child about reading, model reading yourselves, make it an expectation that as a

family you all read. It might be a book, a newspaper, a magazine, an ebook, a flyer/brochure/

Instruction manual, as long as it is text in one form or another.

2. Read with and listen to your child. Have them read to you at a set time and for a set period

every day.

3. For young children, i.e. birth to 3/4, play music to them (with a melody/rhythm and beat) (no

rap stuff!)

4. Recall the nursery rhymes and children’s songs your parents and grandparents sang to and

with you and do the same with your young ones.

5. Tell stories, make up stories, talk to your child about happenings and events and things of in-

terest in your family and friend groups.

Our amazing P&C is about to begin its next project. During the next holidays the playground on the oval will be rebuilt with new equipment and safety softfall. This project is being undertaken by the P&C members and Ross our Grounds Officer- a licensed installer will actually place the equipment and some additional suppliers will be involved. A huge thanks to Toni Scott for her excellent project management skills here. We look forward t the opening of the new playground. You can be a part of the project by donating a sandstone block to the construction. Details are on the facebook site.

Unfortunately, we have had to take the decision to postpone our annual Show ‘n Shine Classic to Modern Car and Bike Show again this year. Covid restrictions for safe plans and the recent outbreaks in other states have made the planning and preparation just to difficult in 2021. Look forward to a bigger show in 2022.

School Banking.

Following the Royal Commission into Banking in Australia and a report from ASIC a number of recommendations relating to banking in schools were made. State governments have begun to implement these. The school banking program has been operating for nearly 90 years and was first instituted when the Commonwealth Bank was still government-owned and operated in 1931. From the end of July the school banking program, largely still with the Commonwealth bank will cease entirely. Accounts will still be active of course but parents will need to communicate directly with the bank.

Naplan- on line in 2021.

Year 3 and 5 children completed Naplan testing between 11 and 21 May. Our students are now well used to testing, and seemed to cope very well. We look forward to the outcomes and results around August. As always we expect that our overall school results will be in the very top couple of schools on the coast and across the state and country.

We are all very proud of the outstanding outcomes our students achieve in so many areas, Naplan included. However the essence of what we do in our school is to ensure that each and every child progresses in their learning as much as is possible.

New School finish time- back to normal.

Thank you to everyone for adapting to the new/old finish times. Teachers are reporting a great last learning session again and traffic seems to be quite manageable. Please help us by remaining in your vehicle when in either of the stop, drop and go zones. If you do have to leave your vehicle then please park in the carpark.

New school crossing supervisor

Welcome to Alex who has joined the team of Kirsten and Sean. Our crossing supervisors do an amazing job keeping your children safe. Please help them by parking only in designated areas and not jay-walking across the roads.

School Alumni:

If you know of anyone who has been a student at Glenview would you please ask them to contact us on 0754396777 or to email us at [email protected] so that we can join them up to our group.

Road Safety:

Thank you for your cooperation around school parking and the two drop off /pick up zones. Please remember that the stop, drop and go zones are not for parking at any time but particularly from 2:30 until 3:20 pm. If you need to stop and leave your car please park in the upper car park. Our crossing supervisors do an amazing job of keeping our children safe. Please help them by not parking across in non- designated areas, picking children up only from the zoned places and observing all road rules.

Allergies and Anaphylaxis:

Would you kindly ensure that all food brought into the school for lunches, snacks etc. is entirely free of any nut or nut related products. Your cooperation here is vitally important to ensure that students’ lives are not put at risk.

Words from the wise:

The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” ― Plutarch Lex Heilbronn Principal

come down at first bread after eating time. Remember to bring your gold

hair sprayed at first break, after eating time. Your money will be

collected by your teacher in the morning.

GIRLS PLACE 2ND IN UNDER 10 NETBALL.

Leila and I entered a netball carnival with our team the Cheval-

lum Rockets. We played from 8.10am until 3.30pm and played

7 , 20minute games throughout the day. We lost one game

(out of 7) and placed 2nd in the under 10’s competition. We

had a lot of fun during the day and we are very excited for our

next netball carnival.

Sporting Schools Football

Groups I, J, K and L have recently completed a Sporting Schools Football (Soccer) Program. These

sessions were coached by Football QLD Coach Louis Chaperon and facilitated by PE teacher Kristen Low.

Students really enjoyed the drills and games they took part in to learn and

practice may soccer skills. It was also great preparation for students who

will take part on the upcoming Small Schools Soccer Carnival at Conondale.

Small Schools Soccer Carnival

This event will be held on Friday June 18 at Conondale Primary School. Students who are selected to

play will have received a permission form this week and need to return it ASAP to the school. It will

be a fantastic day where the focus is on participation. The school requires one referee for the day. If a

parent is interested in this role, please contact the school.

Glenview Field Events Athletics Day

On Thursday June 24, students in the 2009-2012 Age Groups will be taking part in the

annual Glenview Field Events Athletics Day. The program will be provided to parents/carers

shortly. This event is also used to determine who will represent the school at the District

Athletics Carnival in Term 3.

District Sport Trials

Well done to all those students who have taken part recently in District Trials. This is a great

opportunity for students to challenge themselves at a higher level of competition.

Congratulations to Carter, Hannah and Freya, who have all been selected to

compete in the Regional Touch Teams. We wish them all the

very best in their upcoming competitions.

Also congratulations to Jerikah who participated in Regional

Trials for tennis.

On Sunday the 30th of May our Robotics

teams went to RoboRave at the University

of the Sunshine Coast. Even though we

didn’t do very well in our battles it was a

great experience.

At the start of the day there were

hundreds of children waiting to get in.

Once we were inside we found some seats

and watched the dance troupe. They then

told us how the day was going to run.

During the day we learnt some great

information from the other schools that

were there and we also learnt a lot about

our own coding skills. Outside of the

auditorium there was a lot of interesting

technology. They had VR head sets, kinetic

sand and a Robo dog.

We would like to thank Mrs Lythgo and

Mrs Murray for getting us a spot in the

Robo Rave program.

Naoani, Emily and Sarah.

RoboRAVE Australia!!

Glenview State School Robotics Club attended RoboRAVE Australia on Sunday 30th of May.

Although we might not have got far in the competition it was a great experience. The day

started with anticipation to get inside the doors……100’s of kids waited for the doors to open!! There was robots, walking robot

dogs, star wars characters and more.

Glenview State School Robotics Club (Codermatics) were up against schools from all over QLD and streamed live to 32 countries. Our robots versed other robots in the EV3 Sumo comp. It was quite

tough and tricky but we work as a team.

It was a long day but it was great fun and a good experience!!

A special thanks to our teachers

Mrs Lythgo and Mrs Murray.

We couldn’t have done it without them.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

2021 Sunshine Coast Volunteer of the Year Awards

Recently our lovely Mrs Distefano-Peek was nominated as a part

of the 2021 Sunshine Coast Volunteer of the Year Awards. The

finalist awards were held at USC May 29th and while Filomena

was not an award recipient it was lovely to see her celebrated

along with all of the other amazing and deserving nominees.

Thank you Filomena for everything that you do for us as P&C

President

WORLD CLEANERS DAY– 11 JUNE

Thank you Darryll, Irene, Karen and Kristin for keeping our school

so clean.

I moved with my two dogs from Melbourne to Mooloolah Valley in September 2019 and it's one of the best decisions I've made. The sense of community here has far exceeded my expectations and I've been active in the community with my volunteer work at the Mooloolah Community Centre helping in the garden and office. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to team up with Kirstin and Sean working as a School Crossing Supervisor at this charming school and it's community .

WELCOME ALEX

We would like to welcome Alex who has joined

our Crossing Supervisor team with Sean and

Kristin.

last week. It is in the lost property box.

THE AMAZING BEAT BOXER

BY Group C

It's been 20 years since Mrs Harry has seen Tom, but now an ex-student of Mrs Harry's has come to show us his extraordinary talent! Tom Thum (formerly Tom Horn) became a world champion beat boxer in 2005, and now travels the world showing off his unusual talents.

Here he is showing some of our students how to move their mouth

... And he even had a rap jam with Austin (who, just quietly, was pretty impressive too!).

THE AMAZING BEAT BOXER

MONDAY 21st June will be the very last day of School Banking for Glenview School. We would like to thank our banking co-ordinators, Filomena, Sharon and Benita for keeping the program running so efficiently. Thank you

Glenview P&C is still looking for someone to take on the role of

President

– is it you??

Glenview P&C has done and continues to do so many great things for our

school – whether that be help with the purchase of air conditioners and

whiteboards; provide a wide a varied menu for a healthy and popular

tuckshop; ensure that we have a fun and exciting Out of Hours School Care

facility (Kidz Bizz); put on brilliant and bright colour runs; right through to

planning a new playground and Mother’s Day Stalls. We are dedicated to our

children and in turn dedicated to our school community. I think I can honestly

say that the P&C is an essential part of Glenview. We have fantastic people

who choose to volunteer at events, and we are grateful to those who do so. It

is with that team of hands that we can achieve great things!

I didn’t nominate for the of President again this year, I am currently holding

the reigns until someone takes over but would LOVE for someone else to take

on the role (I held it for two years). I intend to be there for the needed

transition process and am willing to meet with you before you make a final

decision. The role of the President is indeed a busy role but with someone

(me and the committee) by your side guiding you through it all – it won’t

seem like such a huge task to take on. If you are considering it getting in touch

with me won’t commit you to the role but may help you to make a decision –

it may not seem as hard as you imagine. It doesn’t hurt to ‘enquire’.

Thanks for reading,

Filomena (P&C Vice President – outgoing President)
