Collection Description

Scope and Content NoteThis artificial collection is comprised of small manuscript collections either written in Georgia,or by, to, about, or concerning Georgians or Georgia and includes correspondence, photographs,account books, and printed material. Material in the collection documents art and literature,agriculture, business, education, politics, and social customs throughout Georgia from1770-1967. Of particular note are numerous documents relating to the sale of enslaved peopleand the economic relationships between land-owners and free Black people in the post-Civil Warperiod. Also present are muster rolls and other documents relating to state military units beforethe Civil War; financial records and correspondence documenting a variety of businesses in thestate; records of the state government and political groups; and small collections of personalpapers.

His first room was at 22 Wheat St. He attended the MethodistChurch. He was ambitious to succeed in business and to improve his moralcondition. He apparently worked in building supplies and may have been acontractor himself. A piece of company letterhead laid in the diary showshim as Tennessee branch manager of the (Nashville, Tennessee, undated)Milwaukee Grain Dryer Company. On January 6, 1921, he makes a final

entry in his "dear old diary," in which he says he feels like the "'man withouta country'no home but simply staying." The balance of the volume is usedfor business accounts. On pp. 171-173, Ficklin comments on the PiedmontChatauqua, which he refers to as "Atlanta's White Elephant or Henry Grady's'What is it.'" 1 item

On July 7,1846, John tells of the death of his son and father and reveals some religioussentiment. He writes on March 8, 1862, of financing the "Gresham Rifles,"of food and crops, and expresses a guarded optimism about the outcomeof the war. This optimism is gone by July 21, 1864, when he predicts theconsequences if Atlanta falls, and also tells of slave losses, militia, and soldiersin the Macon area. On February 24, 1871, he writes of a trip to New Orleansand Texas (Galveston, Houston and the Brazos area) and describes the land andthe population (largely white) that is settling there. 5 items and 5 transcriptions

1838, 3 pages. James Van Ness (1807-1872) was a Georgia lawyer who movedto San Francisco, California, in 1849. He went on to become the mayor therefrom 1855-1856 and confirmed a land ordinance bearing his name that he hadsponsored as an alderman. Van Ness Avenue is named for him. In 1871 hemoved to San Luis Obispo and was elected state senator. This letter containscommentary by the author in regard to Martin Van Buren's presidency and thetreasury problem. 1 item

4 1 Vietnam War photograph album, 1968. Album contains both color and blackand white snapshots of a U.S. Army unit during the Vietnam War. Thereare photographs of white and African American soldiers, as well as SouthVietnamese soldiers. There are also numerous photographs of the Vietnamesecountryside, rural farms, as well as an unidentified Vietnamese city. Theblack and white photographs appear to have been taken in Long My, a ruraldistrict of the H#u Giang province in the MeKong Delta. Seven letters from Rhoda Clark of St. Marys,Georgia dated 1802-1804 to her family in Connecticut and Ohio concerningfamily news, an unsuccessful slave rebellion, conditions on St. Marys, andthe presence of soldiers stationed in the town in 1804. Two letters are fromArchibald Clark, Rhoda Clarks husband, to Elijah Wadsworth in Connecticutin 1804 concerning his ambition to practice law in Georgia and one letter toEdward Wadsworth in Ohio dated 1830 concerning the death of Rhoda. Thefinal item is a shipping agreement between two Savannah businessmen in1791. 9 items
