Abstract

We review the boundedness of the classical fractional integraloperator Iα on Morrey spaces as well as on generalized Morrey spaces.

We also discuss recent results for the generalized fractional integraloperator Tρ associated to a function ρ : (0,∞) → (0,∞).

Further, for a function W on Rn, we shall be interested in theboundedness of the multiplication operator f 7→ W · Tρf ongeneralized Morrey spaces.

For ρ(t) = tα, 0 < α < n, our results for Tρ and W · Tρ reduce toOlsen’s and Kurata-Nishigaki-Sugano’s.

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The Fractional Integral Operator

For 0 < α < n, let Iα denote the Riesz potential or the (classical)fractional integral operator, which is given by the formula

Iαf(x) :=

∫Rn

f(y)

|x− y|n−αdy.

Formally, through its Fourier transform, the operator Iα can berecognized as a multiple of the Laplacian to the power of −α

2, that is,

Iαf = κ(n, α).(−∆)−α2 f,

(see, for instance, [2, 20, 22]).

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The Boundedness of Iα on Lebesgue Spaces

A well-known result for Iα is the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality,which was proved by Hardy and Littlewood [8, 10] and Sobolev [21]around the 1930’s.

Theorem 2.1 (Hardy-Littlewood; Sobolev)

For 1 < p < nα, we have the inequality

‖Iαf‖q ≤ Cp‖f‖p, (1)

that is, Iα is bounded from Lp to Lq, provided that 1q

= 1p− α

n.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 5 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

As an immediate consequence of this inequality, one has the followingestimate for (−∆)−1:

‖(−∆)−1f‖np/(n−2) ≤ Cp‖f‖p,

for 1 < p < n2, n ≥ 3.

Here u := (−∆)−1f is a solution of the Poisson equation −∆u = f .

From (1) we can also prove Sobolev’s embedding theorems (see [22]).

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The (Classical) Morrey Spaces

For 1 ≤ p <∞ and 0 ≤ λ ≤ n, the (classical) Morrey space Lp,λ =Lp,λ(Rn) is defined to be the space of all functions f ∈ Lp

loc(Rn) forwhich

‖f‖p,λ := supB=B(a,r)

( 1

∫B

|f(y)|p dy)1/p

<∞,

where B(a, r) denotes the (open) ball centered at a ∈ Rn with radiusr > 0 [13].

Here ‖ · ‖p,λ defines a semi-norm on Lp,λ. Note particularly thatLp,0 = Lp and Lp,n = L∞.

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The Boundedness of Iα on Morrey Spaces

As stated in [19], S. Spanne proved that Iα is bounded from Lp,λ toLq,λq/p for 1 < p < n

α, 1

q= 1

p− α

n, 0 ≤ λ < n.

A stronger result was obtained by D.R. Adams [1] and reproved by F.Chiarenza and M. Frasca [4].

Theorem 2.2 (Adams; Chiarenza-Frasca)

For 1 < p < nα

and 0 ≤ λ < n− αp, we have the inequality

‖Iαf‖q,λ ≤ Cp,λ‖f‖p,λ

provided that 1q

= 1p− α

n−λ.

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The Hardy-Littlewood Maximal Operator

The proof usually involves the properties of the Hardy-Littlewoodmaximal operator M , defined by the formula

Mf(x) := supr>0

1

|B(x, r)|

∫B(x,r)

|f(y)| dy,

where |B(x, r)| = c rn is the Lebesgue measure of B(x, r).

The operator M is known to be bounded on Lp for 1 < p ≤ ∞ [9].

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 10 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

Chiarenza and Frasca [4] proved that M is also bounded on Morreyspaces.

Theorem 2.3 (Chiarenza-Frasca)

The inequality‖Mf‖p,λ ≤ Cp,λ‖f‖p,λ

holds for p > 1 and 0 ≤ λ < n.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 11 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The Proof of Theorem 1.2

For each x ∈ Rn, write Iαf(x) = I1(x) + I2(x) where

I1(x) :=

∫|x−y|<R

f(y)

|x− y|n−αdy; I2(x) :=

∫|x−y|≥R

f(y)

|x− y|n−αdy,

with R being an arbitrary positive number.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 12 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

For I1, we have the following estimate:

|I1(x)| ≤−1∑

k=−∞

∫2kR≤|x−y|<2k+1R

|f(y)||x− y|n−α

dy

≤−1∑

k=−∞

(2kR)α−n

∫B(x,2k+1R)

|f(y)| dy

≤ CMf(x)−1∑

k=−∞

(2kR)α

≤ C RαMf(x).

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 13 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

To estimate I2, we proceed as follows:

|I2(x)| ≤∞∑

k=0

∫2kR≤|x−y|<2k+1R

|f(y)||x− y|n−α

dy

≤∞∑

k=0

(2kR)α−n

∫B(x,2k+1R)

|f(y)| dy

≤ C∞∑

k=0

(2kR)α−np

(∫B(x,2k+1R)

|f(y)|pdy)1/p

≤ C∞∑

k=0

(2kR)α+λ−np ‖f‖p,λ

≤ C Rα+λ−np ‖f‖p,λ.

The last inequality holds because∞∑

k=0

2k(α+λ−np

) converges, for we

have α+ λ−np< 0.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 14 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

Combining the two estimates, we get

|Iαf(x)| ≤ C Rα[Mf(x) +Rλ−n

p ‖f‖p,λ].

Assuming that f 6= 0 and Mf is finite everywhere, we choose

R =(

Mf(x)‖f‖p,λ

)p/(λ−n)

. Then, we have

|Iαf(x)| ≤ C [Mf(x)]1−αp/(n−λ)‖f‖αp/(n−λ)p,λ

= C [Mf(x)]p/q‖f‖1−p/qp,λ .

The desired inequality then follows from this and the boundedness ofM on Lp.

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The Boundedness of Iα on Generalized Morrey

Spaces

For 1 ≤ p <∞ and a suitable function φ : (0,∞) → (0,∞), wedefine the generalized Morrey space Mp,φ = Mp,φ(R

n) to be thespace of all functions f ∈ Lp

loc(Rn) for which

‖f‖p,φ := supB=B(a,r)

1

φ(r)

(1

|B|

∫B

|f(y)|pdy)1/p

<∞.

Note: If φ(t) = t(λ−n)/p, 0 ≤ λ ≤ n, we have Mp,φ = Lp,λ — theclassical Morrey space.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 16 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

Unless otherwise stated, φ satisfies the following two conditions:

(2.1) 12≤ r

s≤ 2 ⇒ 1

C1≤ φ(r)

φ(s)≤ C1 (the doubling condition);

(2.2)

∫ ∞

r

φp(t)

tdt ≤ C2 φ

p(r) for 1 < p <∞.

For any function ψ that satisfies the doubling condition, we have∫ 2k+1r

2kr

ψ(t)

tdt ∼ ψ(2kr)

for every integer k and r > 0.

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

In [14], E. Nakai proved the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewoodmaximal operator on generalized Morrey spaces.

Theorem 2.4 (Nakai)

The inequality‖Mf‖p,φ ≤ Cp,φ‖f‖p,φ

holds for 1 < p <∞.

Nakai also obtained the boundedness of Iα on generalized Morreyspaces, which can be viewed as an extension of Spanne’s result.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 18 / 39

THE FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATOR

The following theorem can be considered as an extension ofAdams-Chiarenza-Frasca’s result.

Theorem 2.5

Suppose that, in addition to the condition (2.1) and (2.2), φ satisfiesthe inequality φ(t) ≤ Ctβ for −n

p≤ β < −α, 1 < p < n

α. Then, we

have‖Iαf‖q,φp/q ≤ Cp,β‖f‖p,φ

where q = βpα+β

.

Remark. Observe that when φ(t) = t(λ−n)/p, 0 ≤ λ < n− αp,1 < p < n

αand 1

q= 1

p− α

n−λ, Theorem 2.5 reduces to Theorem 2.2.

GENERALIZED FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATORS

The Generalized Fractional Integral Operator Tρ

For a given function ρ : (0,∞) → (0,∞), we define the (generalized)fractional integral operator Tρ by

Tρf(x) :=

∫Rn

ρ(|x− y|)|x− y|n

f(y) dy

For ρ(t) = tα, 0 < α < n, we have Tρ = Iα — the classicalfractional integral operator.

The operator Tρ was first studied by Nakai [15]. Recent results on Tρ

can be found in [5, 6, 7, 16, 17].

GENERALIZED FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATORS

The Boundedness of Tρ on Generalized Morrey

spaces

A slight modification of Theorem 2.5 may be formulated for Tρ asfollows.

Theorem 3.1

Suppose that ρ(t) ≤ C1tα for some 0 < α < n, and, in addition to

the condition (2.1) and (2.2), φ satisfies the inequality φ(t) ≤ C2tβ

for −np≤ β < −α, 1 < p < n

α. Then, for q = βp

α+β, we have

‖Tρf‖q,φp/q ≤ Cp,β‖f‖p,φ,

that is, Tρ is bounded from Mp,φ to Mq,φp/q .

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 21 / 39

GENERALIZED FRACTIONAL INTEGRAL OPERATORS

A further generalization of Theorem 2.2 can be found in [7].

Theorem 3.2 (G)

Suppose that, in addition to the condition (2.1) and (2.2), φ issurjective. If ρ satisfies the doubling condition and∫ r

0

ρ(t)

tdt ≤ Cφ(r)(p−q)/q and

∫ ∞

r

ρ(t)φ(t)

tdt ≤ Cφ(r)p/q,

for 1 < p < q <∞, then we have

‖Tρf‖q,φp/q ≤ Cp,φ‖f‖p,φ.

OLSEN INEQUALITIES

Olsen Inequality

In studying a Schrodinger equation

(−∆ + V (x) +W (x))u(x) = f(x)

with perturbed potentials W on Rn (particularly for n = 3), P.A.Olsen [18] proved the following result.

Theorem 4.1 (Olsen)

For 1 < p < nα

and 0 ≤ λ < n− αp, we have

‖W · Iαf‖p,λ ≤ Cp,λ‖W‖(n−λ)/α,λ‖f‖p,λ,

that is, W · Iα is bounded on Lp,λ, provided that W ∈ L(n−λ)/α,λ.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 23 / 39

OLSEN INEQUALITIES

As a consequence of Theorem 4.1, we see that for 1 < p < n2, n ≥ 3,

the estimate

‖W · (−∆)−1f‖p,λ ≤ Cp,λ ‖W‖(n−λ)/2,λ‖f‖p,λ,

holds provided that W ∈ L(n−λ)/2,λ, 0 ≤ λ < n− 2p.

In particular, when λ = 0, one has

‖W · (−∆)−1f‖p ≤ Cp ‖W‖n/2‖f‖p

provided that W ∈ Ln/2.

Hendra Gunawan (ITB) Generalized Fractional Integral Operator July 24-27, 2007 24 / 39

OLSEN INEQUALITIES

K. Kurata et al. [12] extended Olsen’s result by proving that, forsome p > 1 and a function φ satisfying several conditions (includingthe doubling condition), the operator W · Iα is bounded ongeneralized Morrey spaces Mp,φ, provided that W ∈Ms1,φ ∩Ms2,φ

for some indices s1 and s2.

Their estimate, however, is rather complicated. We shall here presentsimpler estimates for W · Iα on generalized Morrey spaces.
