SOCIAL CLUB NEWSBy Julie Seubert

Our Winter Season is beginning to wind down. I hope that you took advantage of all the events held in February. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to make these events possible. Especially to Sally Miller and for the host families for the wonderful time we all had at the Poker Run; to the Craft Club for their awesome Lasagna Dinner; the Shuffleboard volunteers for their great Valentine Breakfast; to those that helped with the Valentine Day Dance and “Memory Makers” Big Band event; And to Sally Miller for the great “Roaring 20’s Party” for the North East Club. I want to especially thank all the Club Leaders, Activity Leaders and my Social Club Board. Many hands make lighter loads!! It is great to see so many people involved and so many “NEW” faces in the park attending our events.

And…thank you to Barb & Don Wood and Mike & Kathy Fanning for volunteering to coordinate the Holiday Dinner in December.

Are you interested in making decisions on the activities and entertainment for YOUR park? If so....We are currently looking for a President and 2nd Vice President. If you are interested, contact one of the officers.

We have another very busy month of March with a lot of activities. Be sure to read your Newsletter and highlight the events you wish to participate in.

HELPING HANDSBy Ellen Heigham

Helping hands is getting off to a great start. We are one

large community with many neighbors willing to help others with simple acts of kindness. While these gestures might seem simple, they can have a profound impact on their lives.

Thanks to Sharon Tybor and Robyn Johnson and all the wonderful bakers, we now have over $400 in our start-up slush fund.

Helpers have already done repairs on a broken railing, given rides to doctor appointments, grocery shopping help, picked up items at CVS, and made supportive neighborly visits. Desserts and plates of homemade food have been delivered. Wonderful! And more are scheduled. We plan to get a group together to do some simple yard work for several neighbors who can’t bend like they used to.

We are looking for more volunteers who are willing to help others:

A. Get to and from appointments B. yard maintenance i.e. weeding, trimming bushesC. Household choresD. Simple painting projectsE. Simple household repairsF. In house visits

We are also looking to identify those neighbors who can use some help.

Please contact Ellen at 617-448-1748 or Sharon for fundraising ideas.

We will try to get back to you as quickly as we can.

MEMORY MAKERSBIG BAND with a terrific sound. The Memory Makers focus on the musical charts of

Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington, but also dabble in 60-90’s music. The versatility of the band, shows through in sweet, swinging and solid up-tempo toe-tappers. Come on out for a great night of music.

CHORALEERS!The Choraleers, our Forest Park Chorus, is hoping

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH By Lou Smith

The Neighborhood Watch meeting is Wednesday, March 11, at 10 am in the Activities Building.

FPPOA, WiFi is 10 years old. 10 yrs ago we had an outside contractor work with us to set us up with the WiFi equipment and they were learning also. We had a crew that painted the towers and installed them under the guidance of John Wright. After some equipment changes we began operating. That first year we might have had 20 residents on the system. We had one telephone 5 Mps line to the internet. As years went on we added another 5 Mps lines, then 2,10 Mps lines, then 2, 20 Mps lines. All this time we were upgrading our WiFi equipment. 4 years ago we had to go with 100Mps fiber optics for the internet. Then 1-2 yrs ago we upgraded to 1000 Mps for the same price. We expect that the end of this contract to greatly get a price reduction. During this time we went from the old 2.4 Ghz to 5 Ghz antennas to the very latest 5 Ghz gen 2 antennas. During these 10 years we have gone from 20 users to well over 300 users.

During these 10 years, a resident using the system has saved over $5,000. Your WIFI Team.

Forest Park Computer Club

2003 - The Computer Club was started to fill a need in our community.

We put on three fund raising dinners to purchase our equipment i.e. computers, projector, screen etc. Our fees were $10/Winter Season/family and remain the same today. We started out with 6-8 members and we have had as many as 15 – 20 at each session. With more supporting us as members, but not always attending our meetings.

2009 - We helped establish the Park's WiFi system, for which FPPOA provides the funds to maintain and is “FREE” to all residents. Originally, designed and constructed by a commercial firm, the system is now technically maintained by Doug Ford, and Jim Schleter, and a bunch of park residents pitch in to lower the towers when needed. John Wright will help residents with computer and TV issues. The equipment residents need to buy to connect to the network i.e. antennas, routers, cables etc. is purchased and stocked by Sherrill Wright, the club’s treasurer.

2011 – A former member of the club, helped start our web site and acted as Webmaster until he had to leave the park for family care giving. Jan Harmon then volunteered to take over this job. An FPPOA brochure was initiated and designed by one of our members and is updated every year.

2017 – The billiard room table was re-fitted with

a convertible top to make it a dual purpose billiard/BOD room for better meetings and presentations. The computer club went half with FPPOA on a 75” TV, and we purchased a cabinet and large clock. This is where we now hold our group meetings.

2018 – The website was sponsored and paid for by the computer club from inception, but now, with all the new content related to FPPOA, the club passed ownership to the association. It is still maintained by Jan Harmon and Jan Provence updated it and set up a “members only” section as recommended by our legal counsel.

A new electrical grounding system for lightning protection was designed by 2 members, Ron Zylstra and Harry DeMeester and installed by them.

2019 – With the increased load, an upgrade was needed for the WiFi system. There was also damage done in the summer due to the high winds. So, a new 5 Ghz network was added, with the radios bought by the computer club. Most residents have now been switched to the new network,

We continue to help one another with changes in the computer world as best we can. We also collect empty ink cartridges for recycle as our effort to keep them out of the landfill.

BOD presentations for the planning committee, financial committee etc. have always been set up by the computer club and we will continue to help any club put on presentations in the clubhouse on the projection

screen there. Please feel free to contact any of

the WiFi team, treasurer or webmaster (through the website).

BIBLE STUDYBy Laura Esters

The Ladies’ Bible Study Group meets weekly on Thursday mornings from 10:00 A.M. to noon. Our members are women from various churches and/or denominations. We have refreshments, a time for sharing our concerns, prayer and a study, which is taught from both the Old and New Testaments by Laura Esters.

As so many new folks have moved into our park, we believe it is important to let our residents know about this activity as well as all the other organizations that the park offers. We do not espouse any specific theology but are a group of Christian women who enjoy making friends, encouraging and supporting each other as the needs arise, and learning about the Bible.

During the months of November to April we meet at the home of Reva Doliana,849 Hollyberry Court. From May to October, Laura Esters opens up her house to us at 340 Shrub Lane S. Just come to the door and walk in---we’ll be glad to welcome you! If you have any questions, please call Reva at 812-322-3986, or Laura at 239-210-8010.

FOREST PARK VISITORS WRISTBANDS

Visitors unaccompanied by Forest Park residents must wear wristbands when using park recreational facilities (pool, mini golf, etc.). The wristbands are now available in the park office (2 per family and additional bands may be requested). The bands stretch but if they are not large enough you may pin them to clothing, attach them to a key chain or just bring them along.

Please remember that all owners are responsible for their visitors who must comply with all Forest Park Rules & Regulations. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation to assist in maintaining the security of our park.

RECYCLE BLUE BIN The blue bin is used for all other types of

re-cycling such as paper, metal, plastic, etc. This is a separate Program from our regular trash that is picked up on Tuesdays and Fridays. The re-cycle truck comes on Wednesdays.

GREEN TREE STICKER

There is a little green tree sticker available in the office that goes on the LEFT SIDE OF YOUR BACK WINDOW of your car. All residents with automobiles should have this highly visible authorization to be in the Park. This will help the safety patrol on their nightly rounds. If you are temporary resident and don’t want any stickers on your window, them scotch tape it there while you are here.

We still meet every Wednesday 9-12. Everyone is welcome to join us in doing crafts and meeting other ladies in the park. Love to see you on Wednesday.

LIBRARYAs you may have noticed we have

juggled things around a bit. There have been many new books donated and as a result we have weeded out older books to make room. Don't worry, none of these were thrown out we brought them to Goodwill.

Please donate any older books or cookbooks you may have to either Goodwill or the Hope Chest thrift store.

NORTH EAST CLUBBy Dena Samm

NE Club has a president and VP welcome Chris Major and Sandy Bagge. Thank you for Volunteering to keep this great club going.

It was a special era at the clubhouse in Feb when we partied to the 1920s theme. Everyone looked great and had a ‘cat’s meow time. Now get prepared to disco to Saturday Night Fever party on March 30th.

There was a discussion about changing the clubs name but the majority voted to keep the name. Just remember you do NOT need to be from the NE to join this fun club. The membership dues is only $5.00 for the season.

Our final gathering will be our annual picnic on April 13th. This will be a donation of $10.00 per person which will entitle you to a fried chicken dinner. The tickets will be available at our March 30th party and Sunday April 5th at the clubhouse from 1-3:00 p.m.

Looking forward to seeing you at “Saturday Night Fever” on March 30th.

RETIREMENT FOREST PARK STYLEFrom anonymous resident

If you are planning retirement or already retired, let me share retirement experiences with you, which I hope will be helpful.

Fifteen years ago my wife and I moved into a retirement development in North Ft. Myers, Florida called Forest Park with a mini put put course, exercise trail, swimming pool, sauna, Bocce courts and Shuffleboard courts. There are 3000 lakes in Florida; only three are real.

Our biggest retirement concern was time management. What were we going to do all day? Let me assure you, passing the time is not a problem. Your days will be eaten up by simple, daily activities. Just getting out of your car takes 15 minutes. Trying to find where you parked takes 20 minutes. It takes ½ hour on the check-out line in Walmart and one hour to return the item the next day.

Let me take you through a typical day. We get up at 5:00 A.M., have a quick breakfast and join the early morning “Walk and Talk Club” around the exercise trail. There are about 30 of us, and rain or shine we also walk around the streets, all talking at once. Every development has some late risers who stay in bed until 6 A.M. After a nimble walk avoiding irate drivers out to make us road kill, we go back home, shower and change for the next activity.

My wife goes directly to the pool for her water Aerobics class, followed by gasping for breath and CPR. I put on my “Ask me about my Grandchildren” T-shirt, my plaid mid-calf shorts, my black socks and sandals and go to the clubhouse lobby or Activities Building for a nice nap.

Before you know it, it’s time for lunch. We go to Sam’s Club to partake of the many tasty samples dispensed by ladies in white hairnets. All free!! After a filling lunch, if we don’t have any doctor appointments, we might go to the flea market to see if any new white belts have come

in or to buy a Rolex watch for $2.00. We then, must rush home to socialize with our pool buddies in our beautiful pool, which by the way needs some crack fixing…the pool not our buddies..well, maybe some of them too!!

We’re usually back home by 3 PM to get ready for

dinner. People start lining up for the “early bird” about 4 PM, but we get there by 4:45 PM, because we’re late eaters. The dinners are very popular because of the large portions they serve. You can take home enough food for the next day’s lunch and dinner, including extra bread, crackers, packets of mustard, relish, ketchup and Sweet-and-low along with mints.

At 5:30 PM we’re home ready to watch the 6 o’clock news. By 6:30 PM we’re fast asleep. Then we get up and make 5 or 6 trips to the bathroom during the night, and it’s time to get up and start a new day all over again. Doctor

related activities eat up most of your retirement time. I enjoy reading old magazines in sub-zero temperatures in the waiting room, so I don’t mind. Calling for test results also helps the days fly by. It takes at least half an hour just getting through the doctor’s phone menu. Then there’s the hold time until you’re connected to the right

21

party. Sometimes they forget you’re holding, and the whole office goes off to lunch.

Should you find you still have time on your hands, volunteering provides a rewarding opportunity to help the less fortunate. Florida has the largest concentration of seniors under five feet tall and they need our help. I myself am a volunteer for “The Vertically Challenged Over 80.” I coach their Put-Put team, The Arthritic Avengers. They think they are playing Basket Ball.

The hoop is only 4 ½ feet from the floor. You should see the look of confidence on their faces when they make a slam dunk.

Food shopping is a problem for short seniors or “bottom feeders” as we call them, because they can’t reach the items on the upper shelves. There are many foods they’ve never tasted. After shopping, most seniors can’t remember where they parked their cars and wander the parking lot for hours while there food defrosts.

Lastly, it’s important to choose a development with

an impressive name. Italian names are very popular in Florida. They convey world traveler, uppity sophistication and wealth. Where would you rather live?? Forest Park or Carriage Village?? There’s a big difference. They’re both privately owned, but, Forest Park people are much friendlier.

I hope this material has been of help to you present and future retirees.

Have a great week!!(And watch out for the Alligators!)
