founder Phaedra Kelly is, when

at home is Britain, it’s director

group of TGs in Greece. The

news was that they had been

obliged to swear an oath that they

would note combine to overthrow

the government, and thereafter

they had a group, which evolved

into a democratic political party

for all minorities aimed at win-

ning elections.

At the time she was not a pri-

ority because, she was not, then.

IGTA ’s eleven B3 agents, travel-

ling abroad to engage in some-

times deep-cover and sometimes

pro-activefield missions, gather-

ing data, evidence and documen-

tation on andfromforeign TGcommunities, fightingfor their

rights in thefront line.

The following is just one IGTAcase:

We first heard of AlomaHaralambos in 88 via the gay

media, when she was the first

Travesti (gay Transvestite prosti-

tute) to organize a coalition or

in any trouble, and attempts to

establish a contact failed,—TGsseldom answer mail in their own

I built the kind of network

from home that would help me to

both official and alternative, by

doing much of what they all

ought to have been doing in the

first place.

She organized the Travesti on

the street to look after the female

prostitutes, and in particular to

watch over the under-aged girls,

and encourage them out of the

trade. She also did a lot to force

police to start representing all the

The Travesti was found in time

and saved but suffered terrible

scars and burns. The police

proved slow and inefficient in

investigating and Aloma suspect-

ed that this was on purpose, so

she followed up on witness

and IGTA’s follow up, Alomahad painkillers, AmnestyInternational were taking notice

and our own network had been

alerted.

On a second mission in 1995

to speak again in court for her, I

went also to Istanbul and brought

in the Turkish Travesti group an

because she had advised Travesti

Another charge was theft of a

and was told to say it was her.

Later on seeing Aloma in prison

she retracted, and was harrased

by police into making the charge

yet again.

It soon became apparent that

our sister was in jail under only

one charge, that of breathing

with intent to live. She had been

later she killed herself with a

cal party which had failed to win

election. Police had got at the

girls, pressuring them and brib-

ing them to swear out complaints

against her. It was true that

Aloma had slapped them around

sometimes, but to regiment them,

as many were junkies to which

she rightly, objected, and she

needed to save them from that

only her own wit and will.

On the streets at night I

found our sisters there were

still strung out on dope, and

thus had been easy targets for

the police, who had changed

their memories of Aloma for

them. In court, I had a day in

which to alter their thinking

across a language barrier, and

help Mat to make points to the

bench about Aloma’s fitness to

human rights teams.

So Mat worked on in Greece

and IGTA from the U.K. so

that in 1997 we heard that

Aloma had been uncondition-

ally released. All charges

dropped.

Apart from her note of

thanks, Aloma had not been

heard of or from since, until in

October 1998, one of our

agents in Greece sent us a

own. It also had its effect. The

Athens News reports; 'Mayoral

candidate Maria Damanaki has

raised the issue in her cam-paign, including the head of a

gay rights group in her ballot.’

Once IGTA hears of, or

agrees to take a case, it

remains relentless, employing

creative thinking in the field

and. using every resource pos-

sible. We make no promise.

Somehow, with Mat, I suc-

ceeded and another ten years

came down to two. But as

ever, besides reducing her sen-

tences, my aim as an IGTAagent was to stress to the

courts that I was a vigilant

international observer, with

media connections, who was

reporting back to many other

newspaper clipping:

pected pep into the local gov-

ernment elections in Larissa,

the city that once held her pris-

oner, and where paradoxically,

she still has many friends.

She had headed up a

and conservative city, which

has no real vice center of its

Just had to write to tell you

about the most extraordinary day

I've ever had as a transvestite.

We've all been ridiculed at one

time or another but this time was

much different than previous

encounters.

I try to get out at least once a

month to go shopping and expe-

rience life as a woman. Gay and

lesbian clubs are okay but for

me the real challenge is being in

public and this was my day for

that. It was a Saturday and 1 had

just spent the better part of two

hours doing my make-up and

now it was time to choose myoutfit for the day. Nothing too

fancy, I was going to a mall 1
