THE Fly by Night Musicians’ Club has been handed the keys to Victoria Hall, but still faces significant challenges to make its new home work.

Fremantle council’s strategic and general services committee voted Wednesday to give the Fly a one-year lease of the High Street building with an option to renew for a further year.

Fly manager John Reid sent the Herald an ebullient text after the decision, crowing it had been a unanimous vote, but concedes there are still hurdles to overcome.

FREMANTLE’S Susan Flavell has won an art award for her outré sculpture The Shimmer—a pudgy beast with a viper tail.

Flavell described the two-metre papier mâché animal as an “unreal creature of the imagination, implausible in its shape and identity”. She won a bank-sponsored people’s choice award and handed $5000 to purchase art materials.

Flavell, who lectures in sculpture at Central TAFE, was delighted to win.

t is the first time the competition, established in 2001, has accepted 3D works. The bank’s art curator Sandra Murray says a record number of votes was cast by the public.

LAST week the Barnett government spent $2 million to bring the Giants to WA. This week it’s cancelled this year’s premier’s book awards in order to save $65,000.

Fremantle author John Dowson, who took out the non-fiction title years ago for his book Old Fremantle, describes the cancellation as “outrageous”.

From now on the formerly annual awards will be held biennially, a move the LNP government says it’s making as part of its e ciency drive.

“Every state has its awards but here in WA we are halving ours for a saving of just $65,000,” Mr Dowson thunders.

“They just spent $6 million bringing the Giants here, which is fantastic, but they can’t afford $65,000 for literature?”

The respected amateur historian says receiving his award provided credibility in a notoriously snooty field.

“All these academics on their gravy trains who look down their noses at you—I’m being cynical here—but they can’t look down their noses at you so

• o n Dowson says winning a premier s book award is big news for an aut or File 2013

much.”Mr Dowson suspects the real

culprit is not the politicians, but members of the WA State Library board, who he believes are “besotted by the digital age”.

“Libraries are being stripped of printed books at an alarming rate,” Mr Dowson says.

They are being trucked off

each week to never-ending ‘book sales’.”

The former port city deputy mayor says the downgrade of the premier’s book award comes as printed books make an unexpected comeback.

Research from the Pew Research Center in the US two years ago found sales of e-books is slowing while new technology is helping drive increased sales for printed books.

“When my book Old Fremantle was published in 2003 it went immediately into over 300 Western Australian libraries,” Mr Dowson told the Herald. “When a similar book of mine, Fremantle Port, was published a couple of years ago, it was a full year before a single copy found its way into any library.”

He’s concerned about the effect on authors of children’s literature, as it’s a highly competitive field and the lack of exposure will hurt young writers.

“The library board of WA needs a kick in the pants,” he says. “This disgrace is not just the fault of the arts minister John Day and the premier Colin Barnett.”

A u t h o r s lam s aw ards c u t

“I know many colleagues will miss its presence when the exhibition ends in March,” she says. “I do also hope the work

finds a home as it is currently for sale and too large to return to Susan’s studio!” The competition is exclusive to WA artists.

EAST FREMANTLE councillor Matthew Handcock resigned Tuesday, less than a month after publicly expressing concern about his council’s moves to sack CEO Stuart Wearne.

The Herald understands the veteran CEO was informed Thursday the council had terminated his contract as of the previous day. He was offered three months’ paid notice and a payout equivalent to nine months’ pay. The offer followed a botched process in which the council voted to give Mr Wearne the equivalent of a 15-month payout in December, then tried unsuccessfully to rescind that motion at a special council meeting on February 4.

The matter came up for discussion again at the council

by STEVE GRANT

FOUR years after a 1000-strong petition called on Fremantle council to upgrade public toilets at South Beach they remain as third-world as ever.

Beach-goers on Sunday morning were aghast to find the men’s toilets coated with crusted-on faeces, and the floor strewn with soggy toilet paper soaked in urine. The women’s toilets didn’t fare much better according to witnesses.

“Only to wee,” beach regular Rosario Ianni shuddered when

the Herald asked if he ever used them. Mr Ianni criticises the council for planning to spend thousands installing a basketball court at the beach, when the toilets are so sub-standard.

“They’re out of date,” he says. “They need stainless steel—that’s not hard to do nowadays—and they need the bowls stuck to the wall so the piss doesn’t go everywhere.”

Carmelo Retta recalls a day he couldn’t hold on any longer and reluctantly had to use the men’s cubicle. He says it was so revolting he couldn’t bear to touch anything so he hovered over the seat, Indian style.

“Some guy walked by and he saw me like that and he stopped—he thought I was in pain or something,” he laughs.

But he says the toilets are no laughing matter and they give the city a bad name. “The beach is so popular, so many people come here. What do they see?”

The council reckons the toilets and change rooms are cleaned six times a day. “No major upgrades are planned in the short to medium-term but minor maintenance works/removal of gra ti and responding to vandalism on a needs basis will continue,” say the council’s “tech services guys”.

meeting this week, but was discussed behind closed doors and the minutes have not been released.

At the February 4 meeting, former mayor Andrew Smith stood in the public gallery to ask the council a series of questions about Mr Wearne’s contract.

Mr Smith asked why mayor im ’Neill had tried to offer the

CEO a termination based on a clause that would have resulted in minimal compensation, in contravention of the December decision. He also wanted to know why the council was seeking to finalise the decision ahead of the recent referendum on amalgamations.

Cr Handcock—after querying Mr Smith on whether he was asking questions on behalf of the Herald (which Mr Smith owns) or as a former mayor—told the chamber he’d fruitlessly asked similar questions about why there was such haste, but

had not received satisfactory answers.

Cr Handcock, the son of former long-serving mayor Ian, foreshadowed a motion he wanted debated publicly about deferring discussions on the CEO’s contract until a full council meeting on or after February 23. However, after a scheduled break Mr O’Neill ignored that and moved to go behind closed doors.

Cr Handcock didn’t return the Herald’s calls about his subsequent resignation. Mr O’Neill says the resignation isn’t connected to Mr Wearne’s contract, but won’t reveal why. “It’s best to speak to Matthew about why he quit.”

Mr Wearne was told to go on leave in September and had been set to return at the end of March. Early last year there were reports his relationship with the mayor had broken down and the pair was barely speaking.

Too hot to cook inside...?

herald letters

Wet wordsFURTHER to the letter “Don’t hide Fremantle library” (Herald, February 7, 2015) I would like to point out the danger that flooding presents to a collection in a basement.

A few years back a freak hail storm resulted in localised flooding at the niversity of WA, amongst other places. rreplaceable archival material was lost.

remantle’s local history collection is housed in the library and although the main collection can be replaced, that historical material cannot be replaced should a similar event occur.

ther reasons can also lead to a flood such as hosing down a fire, sewer pipes leaking, rising sea water due to global warming, etc.

agree with all the reasons in the letter but surely the potential danger of losing our local history collection must be a compelling reason to house our library above ground level.

Valerie CousinsForrest St, Fremantle

Wisdom, please WAS shocked and appalled to

I have had the privilege to work with arie on the ooyeembara

Small is beautifulAS a member of the riends of East remantle was a bit surprised the ity of remanle felt the need to place a full page ad in last week’s Herald to defend the attempt to take over the Town of East remantle, after the residents have spoken.

remantle campaigned strongly against being merged with elville but somehow took umbrage at our campaign to save our town.

While space does not permit me to respond to all of the city’s claims would like to make a few points. ur claim that rates would skyrocket

was based on facts WA Treasury orporation’s financial analysis came

up with a financial sustainability score for each council and East

remantle was above average while remantle was below.

ur rates are already up to 3 per cent lower than remantle and we know Geraldton and Noosa’s rates increased by 3 and per cent respectively after amalgamation. There is a perception that remantle is very pro-development with scant regard for heritage values, constantly upsetting the heritage lobby.

The Arthur Head decision immediately springs to mind. The most ama ing claim of all was for

remantle to claim it was not a takeover when its own plans for a ward structure did not even include a ward for East ramantle.

Go deep DiTHE letter by Di Drachenberg (Herald, February 7, 2015) suggesting the bike trail at Manning Park will wreck nature is based on stereotypical assumptions about mountain bikers and lack of research.

It is unfair and blatantly untrue to label mountain biking culture as promoting a “daredevil mentality” anymore than it is to label skate culture as fostering rabble-rousing amongst teenagers.

Have you been to the skate park in Fremantle, Di? It’s full of families and young people enjoying the outdoors and honing their skills. Mountain biking, comparably, is an often-misunderstood sport requiring considerable skill, strength, energy and persistence.

The existing research indicates there is very little basis to the claim that restricting or prohibiting mountain biking is beneficial from an environmental or resource perspective. According to environmental impact studies all of the e isting scientific

studies indicate that while mountain biking, like all forms of recreational activity, can result in measurable impacts to

Mind your own beeswaxWHY do local politicians get involved with a department of housing eviction, knowing full well this person has breached tenancy rules? (Herald, February 14, 2015).

It seems to me they want political votes. If Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt is that concerned about this lady Marie Thorne being homeless why doesn’t he house her at his residence. The laws are for everyone. Concentrate on your position Dr Pettitt, as mayor of Fremantle, and leave Homeswest to do its job.

Peter BurnsHannibal St, Palmyra

Feeling adriftI AM still feeling extremely dejected as a result of the latest news on developments planned for Rottnest.

The powers that be don’t seem to realise just what a treasure is at our doorstep. Being an older citizen, I vividly remember the wonderful childhood holidays I have had there.

More importantly my children, who are now young adults, also enthusiastically recall the days of free adventure which they have experienced.

Save the sympathyWHILE it is indeed sad a lady of this age is being evicted from her home (Herald, February 14, 2015) perhaps some sympathy should be saved for her neighbours, in both public and private housing, who have had cause to make at least 25 complaints about antisocial behaviour over the past three or so years.

These complaints will have been thoroughly investigated and found to be proven to be true by state housing before an eviction notice was issued.

While it is indeed commendable for a “swag of politicians” to come to Marie Thorne’s support, I would once again suggest they give some thought to the neighbours, who have had to endure living with antisocial behaviour for many years, and as has been cited in recent Herald articles on other tenants in past weeks.

Each year state housing’s disruptive anti-social tenants (and/ or their visitors) are responsible for hundreds of thousands of dollars being spent on repairs, or unpaid rents. As the extremely well-paid elected representatives of the taxpaying, ratepaying voters of this state, this should be a major concern to Ms McGurk, Mr Tinley, Ms Parke, Senator Line and our expensively pensioned former attorney-general Mr McGinty. And especially to mayor Pettitt who it appears has high hopes of encouraging people to move to Fremantle, spending

Sinners are grinnersWHAT a wicked sinner I am, enjoying the interesting ambience of Fremantle, its eclectic architecture, its cooling sea breezes and kind-hearted people.

For my sins, my fellow citizens and I are to be denied a functioning emergency department in Fremantle Hospital, according to Rod Shaw (Herald letters, February 14, 2015).

The folks who live near him in the dull mansions of the aptly named Bull Creek, will benefit from the new E at iona Stanley Hospital, though they don’t seem very grateful to the Gallop Labor government that started its construction.

But when a future Liberal government closes that facility (so all emergency treatment is centralised at QE2 in Shenton Park in the name of good government), I will be happy to write another letter of protest.

A rational response to Mr Shaw’s outburst is to point out we can have an ED at both Freo and Murdoch. But a rational response to his well-written, but excessively grouchy letter would probably miss the mark and not be appreciated.

“Furthermore, while the impact mechanics and forces may be different from foot tra c, mountain biking impacts are little different from hiking, the most common and traditional form of trail-based recreational activity” (Environmental Impacts of Mountain Biking: Science Review and est ractices by eff Marion and Jeremy Wimpey).

A mountain biking trail in Manning Park could certainly involve schools and youth clubs in a meaningful learning process to understand and appreciate their environment—after all, mountain biking is a way of celebrating and appreciating the environment in which people bike.

upwards of half-a-million dollars buying newly built, or soon to be built, apartments, and I assume being re-elected.

Common sense dictates that moving this lady, as Dr Pettitt suggests, from one location to another is just moving the problem from one location to another. I ask any of the “swag of politicians” who so publicly rushed to this lady’s defence, to put their hands on their hearts and publicly (truthfully) state, they would welcome this lady and her visitors as a neighbour.

Lodge your questionsTHE enormously fearful outcry against a proposed lodge in Hilton (Herald, February 14, 2015) prompts me to ask “what is in fact a lodge?”.

A lodge provides secure low-cost housing for those in need. A lodge is run as a tight ship with rules and regulations which could be compared to a boarding house. This is to support the tenants, and of course, keep the neighbourhood peaceful. The good folk of Hilton deserve to have this clearly explained to them.

For example, because it is a private business, the owner can evict tenants whose noise and behaviour attract complaints. This is very different to the current Homeswest situation.

Let’s at least give “Evelyn House” our consideration. It’s all to easy to allow those with lower finances to fall by the wayside. In the future, philanthropic entrepreneurism may become more advantageous for everyone than government welfare housing.

Fines lack faithFURTHER to “God save the ratepayers” (Herald letters, February 14, 2015) by Dianne Westall regarding parking tickets imposed on people attending a funeral service at the Swan Yacht Club on January 30, I would like to echo her protest to the unfeeling attitude shown by the East Fremantle town council.

A similar lack of empathy was shown by the same council to me about two years ago when I too parked on lawn adjacent to the club and received a ticket.

Although not as sad an occasion as that of a funeral, mine was levied whilst I was attending an ANZAC Day commemorative ceremony at the club and, once again, there was insu cient room to park within the club’s borders so I assume (incorrectly) as it was an occasion of su ciently patriotic significance that parking on the grass adjacent would be a reasonable action.

I did not see any “no parking” signs, although when I rang the council to plead my case I was told they were there and it is “not our fault if you did not see them”. My attempt to negotiate forgiveness of the fine based on the significance of the occasion was met with a less than sympathetic response to my request. I was told nothing could be done and the

Weeding for truthWE note Patrick Guiton’s letter “Improving amenity” (Herald, February 14, 2015). It’s yet another attempt by SERAG to elude the truth. In reality:

• Catherine O’Neill (SERAG) instigated the poisoning of a significant portion of a grassed amenity/entry area that was used and enjoyed by the public;

• this action cannot be presented as necessary to prevent kikuyu ingression because there was no kikuyu ingression into the marine park from this area;

• poisoning the grassed amenity area is definitely not appropriate maintenance and has done nothing for the needs of the bird life or other wildlife;

• poisoning has resulted in a degraded entrance and a safety hazard for elderly visitors as they trip in excavated furrows;

• the work of removing kikuyu that

• from page 5I am very concerned their children and

grandchildren will not be given the same opportunities.

A special part of Rottnest is that would not know if the person alongside you was a prince or a pauper.

These recent plans will certainly change that! As a tour guide with 30 years’ experience, I have repeatedly been told by visitors and locals “don’t let them do it”. Why can’t our authorities see the uni ueness this island offers am well traveled enough to have seen the oversupply of plastic locales.

Coincidentally, I was on a balcony on East Street last Sunday, February 15, when the barges transporting the Giants pulled into East Street jetty and there were literally hundreds of cars parked on the verge in an area clearly marked no standing anytime , with not a tra c

warden nor ticket issuer anywhere in sight.

These vehicles were causing a danger to pedestrians and observers alike. It was a “special event” but surely so is a funeral and ANZAC Day there does not seem any consistency or is all just about raising revenue? One can only wonder.

A perfect gatewayWHAT acid trip is Joan Kempthorne on to visualise the Esplanade park in Fremantle as a “sandy desert”? (Herald letters, February 14, 2015).

had a picnic there for my son’s first birthday on the weekend and it was an absolute joy.

Most of our 30 guests couldn’t stop commenting on how beautiful and luscious Esplanade park is and how lucky I am to live and work so close to such a sensational public space.

Not only did all the adults enjoy it, the 15 young children we invited have never looked happier. The older kids had a blast at the amazing skatepark—which the council should be commended for—while the younger kids kicked balls and wrestled on the very healthy green lawn.

Thanks to the Fremantle council the West End is alive and kicking again with the recent Bathers Beach development, and Esplanade park is the perfect gateway to it.

Unsound furyI WAS gobsmacked by Rod Shaw’s bile-fuelled letter to the (Herald, February 14, 2015) damning residents of Fremantle for asking for an emergency department.

Perhaps a little perspective might set him straight? The Town of Harvey is located a little under 30 minutes from the Bunbury hospital. Notwithstanding this, Harvey Hospital has a small 24-hour ED, servicing its estimated 2600 residents. No-one begrudges them this service, nor should they.

Fremantle residents are—on the best possible tra c now about half that time from Fiona Stanley. Rod Shaw asserts the drive is 14 minutes but Google Maps’ estimate of 19 minutes better accords with my e perience and that’s in ideal tra c.

Fremantle suburb (not city) has in the order of 8000 residents. It is also a lively bustling CBD with a busy night life. It draws in, at some times, tens of thousands for events. The Fremantle Arts Centre has a capacity of 3000 patrons. The

Waste of moneyIS it not regrettable that the issues covered by Dr Pettitt and Mr Graeme Mackenzie in the full page advertisement on page 2 of last week’s Herald (presumably funded by the ratepayers of the City of Fremantle) were not more widely

• from page 6There were a total of 5178 residence

who could vote. Of these, 2164 voted No and 684 Yes. That leaves 2330 who did not cast a vote. This group is made up of “yes” voters who abstained, undecided voters and voters who were not interested in the outcome plus, of course, “no” voters who didn’t vote.

For the poll results to have been turned around to say, a 12-vote winning margin for “Yes”, it would have required 1911 (82 pre cent) of non-voters to have voted “Yes” and only 419 to have voted “No”.

If the state government had been bold enough to insist on a compulsory vote, based on the real poll where 76 per cent of voters voted “No”, the chances of such a large turn-a-round seem extremely remote. The design of the referendum may be flawed but the poll results appear to be a true reflection of residents’ feelings.

Gordon MacNishEast St, East Fremantle

Chilli Festival alone drew 25,000. Surely these numbers speak for

themselves. The lack of a 24-hour emergency department—even a smaller, less sophisticated one than we used to have—is not only bad planning, it is quite simply dangerous. All the sound and fury the Rob Shaws of the world can muster will not change these basic facts.

Tomas FitzgeraldZenobia St, Palmyra

aired before the referendum on February 6?

No doubt many against the merger failed to grasp the fact the Town of East Fremantle is just too small to carry on alone, and were swayed by the emotional views of a few, living in the past.

In particular, Dr Pettitt’s statement Fremantle would only agree to a new structure which included ward representation, was not known to many voters. It was this issue which caused so many East Freo ratepayers to vote against the merger. What a waste of money (except for the income to your paper) is the City’s advertisement, coming after the outcome is known.

Bob Tillett,View Tce, East Fremantle

A visionI JUST don’t understand the Labor party’s opposition to the cancellation of late night trains.

It is clear this farsighted policy will result in an economic boon for the Swan River Colony. Horse breeders and manufacturers of carriages are certainly looking forward to being able to offer their services to those few night owls who see fit to remain within the city after dusk.

No doubt the visionary Barnett government will also soon outlaw the use of expensive electrical fandangles and return to the romance of gas light. Imagine the job opportunities for gas-lighters, those nimble fellows who walk on stilts. And who said there was no career after studying at Bizircus, mum.

ut ’m confident our supreme leader Sir Colin—an Abbott knighthood is surely not far now—won’t rest on his emperor’s laurels. He can singlehandedly revive our flagging forest industry by reintroducing jarrah cobbles to our roads. I weep at the prospect. The opportunities are endless. I hear the whales are even making a comeback near Bathers Beach. Sharpen the harpoons boys!

BETTER communication and follow-up protocols between Fremantle’s mental health unit and emergency departments are being developed in response to the violent death of White Gum Valley resident Joan Hendry late last year.

Ms Hendry, 52, had tried to get her adult son Gabe Lang assessed at the Alma Street facility in December, but she just missed its 8pm closing time. She took him to the nearby emergency department but left after a prolonged wait as a disruptive drunk was upsetting her son.

Ms Hendry died later that night and her son has been charged with her murder. At a court hearing last month, Mr Lang’s lawyer Gerald Yin said his client was not fit to plead.

Following the incident, WA mental health minister Helen Morton ordered an urgent inquiry, and she told the Herald two recommendations had emerged.

“First that if a person has made a phone call to the Alma Street mental health clinic, before attending an emergency department, details need to be shared between the clinic and the emergency department,” she said.

“The other recommendation is to implement follow-up procedures be established for cases where people wait in emergency departments and then leave before being assessed, especially if they have presented with a mental health problem.”

Ms Morton said more than a quarter of the recommendations from the Stokes inquiry into WA’s mental health services had been implemented, while all other recommendations were “underway and on track”.

Prof Bryant Stokes was engaged to hold the review following hundreds of deaths linked to psychiatric facilities, including a high number of suicides. He found the sector was chronically under-staffed and lacking leadership.

A cut aboveThis high-end barber shop offers much more than a great haircut.

In days gone by, a visit to the barber shop was an essential part of a man’s weekly routine. Much more than a place to get a haircut, a barber shop off ered men the chance to relax and socialise, while getting an expert cut and shave. Barbering is enjoying a renaissance, as men rediscover the appeal of a visit to the barber shop.

South Freo’s De Barber is a popular destination for guys from all age groups and backgrounds (not just young hipsters) who are seeking more of a traditional style barber shop experience with all the conveniences of the modern era. Open for almost a year, manager Nicole Albersdoerfer is rapt with the way customers have taken to the De Barber concept:

“We are a classic style men’s barber, off ering high uality services at reasonable prices. The friendly team of experienced and skilled stylists are here to help you look your best. Our services

include expert cutting, shampoo and scalp massage, hot towel shave, grooming advice and men’s facial mask. Everyone has a diff erent type of hair and face shape so we work to provide an individual style to suit, rather than just the latest or most popular style.”

De Barber is the kind of place where guests are encouraged to feel at home and make full use of

the lounge area, complete with comfy couches, large LCD screen and the latest newspapers and magazines. The decor is classic gentlemen’s club style - warm tones and lots of rich timber. No stark minimalism here!

“We provide a selection of complimentary coff ee and bouti ue beers and there’s even a retro arcade game to while away the time. We have a group of guys that come on a regular basis to hang out, shoot the breeze with a beer or two and get a great haircut in the process,” said senior stylist Amba.

COME on! There must be something we can do to sway the owners of our local deli to ‘fess up. It’s an absolute eyesore.

George’s deli has been a landmark for many years: people heading to Spearwood would often be directed from George’s deli (turn left here, straight past George’s deli turn right, etc).

ver the past five years it has become so run-down. It changed owners years

CORRECTION: LAST week the Herald reported Melville CEO

Shayne Silcox was at a meeting between mayor Russell Aubrey and Cr Pazolli, which was the subject of a court case. Dr Silcox had been subpoeaned to provide testimony regarding a different meeting. He was not at the meeting that was the subject of the mayor’s failed violent restraining order application.”

HERALD reader Lala Landon of Spearwood reckons it’s time to do something about a deli called George (above—image from Google Maps streetview).

back and they just don’t seem to care. The council has spent loads of money doing up Spearwood Ave, but this corner just lets it all down.

I have written to them and spoken to the council. t’s full of gra ti, with years worth of overgrown verges just to start with. Check out the DIY plyboard all around the building! Someone started something years ago and just left it. With all the regulations the council re uires from us ratepayers, find it impossible to believe it doesn’t have any to implement here.

A friend passed it the other day thinking it was derelict! “Just down the road from million-dollar homes at Coogee marina—that can’t look good,” she said. Not much embarrasses me, but that did. My kids wouldn’t walk past the place on their own, it’s that rough, it looks truly scary.

I hope I never run out of milk and be subjected to entering the corner of doom.

COCKBURN council has given up hope of a passenger rail service running down its coast.

A decade ago the council set aside 000s m alongside the freight line

through Port Coogee for a station and shops, but at last week’s meeting it was reallocated for housing.

cers say there’s no future passenger rail intended”, and without a station shops won’t be viable. Instead, they say Australand should be allowed to build apartments.

The developer will also get vastly increased density—from R20 to R80—with staff arguing the former oning was an anachronism.

“It is envisioned that an R80 coding will facilitate a small-lot grouped dwelling development, or multiple dwellings,” the report says.

However, prescribed heights will remain the same.

SOUTH FREMANTLE Senior High School has kicked off as the region’s newest independent public school, enrolling its first-ever bunch of year s and with big plans for its future.

Principal Geri Hardy reckons looming independence was an important factor in the efroy Road campus being chosen over Hamilton SHS to become home to the new Fremantle College when the schools amalgamate in 0 .

Ms Hardy says the college will keep all specialist and vocational programs run now by the two schools, and will also introduce a gifted academic stream for year s.

“As well as welcoming 10 new teachers into the school, this year we have enrolled 200 new students in years 7 and 8 and another 60 across the other year groups, s Hardy says.

The youngsters often have no time to pack their personal items when taken to their new homes, so Ms Jones has been donating the blankets so they have something of their own to cuddle. She now leads 20 other quilters in a group called Spy uilts every second

Friday at 9am where they meet for a chat and a sew, and between them they’ve quilted more than 300 blankies for oster are WA.

Beguiling on Bellevue

BELLEVUE Terrace is one of those quintessentially Fremantle streets, full of

gorgeous heritage cottages and semi-detached homes.

This delightful three-bedroom limestone abode, sitting on a modest 235sqm, is of the later variety and has the classic long hall from which a variety of rooms branch off.

The first is a bedroom with all you’d expect from an 1890 home, arrah floors, ceiling rose, fireplace and the cutest rench doors onto the front verandah.

The main bedroom is on the second level, a gargantuan space with vaulted ceiling, set with two windows, and a quirky pink, curved wall guarding the generous ensuite.

A spacious balcony is a great spot to relax, with built in timber seating to recline or raise the back and loll and great views across an assortment of roof tops to the ocean. Sunsets from here must be spectacular.

Back on ground level you emerge from the hall into the huge kitchen/dining area.

An old fireplace in the dining area has been stripped back to reveal warm, raw brick and a tile fire installed making this a toasty space in winter.

The kitchen is purely a modern space, a long, lean galley-style domain, with sparkling white stone bench tops, plenty of white drawers with slick stainless steel handles, Smeg appliances and a pull-out pantry.

Crisp, white walls and ceiling in the living area are relieved by the deep, chocolate richness of aged arrah floors, and softened by huge glass doors leading to the garden.

“It’s a wee oasis of calm,” says the vendor’s mum, visiting from Scotland and relishing her last hours in this private sanctuary before returning to the savage wilds of Pictland.

Lush garden beds, mature trees and textured brick paving really do make this an oasis and there’s no worry about neighbours peering in when you’re in the spa.

Bellevue Terrace is a hop, skip and a jump from Fremantle’s many cafes, restaurants, shops and galleries and living here is to embrace inner-city living in a genteel manner.

estateJENNY D’ANGER

THIS delightful Burt Street home has the best of both worlds, with gorgeous heritage features

and a stunning modern addition to ensure it meets the needs of today’s modern family.

From the street it’s pure Mt Lawley cottage, with a cute bullnose verandah and beautiful stained glass surrounds to the solid old front door.

eiling roses, fireplaces, high ceilings and deep skirting boards can be found in the original section of the home.

With a houseful of young boys the vendor found it more convenient to install floating timber floors over the original jarrah, but those gorgeous boards lay in wait like Tutankhamun’s tomb to be rediscovered.

The front section, which houses three of the four bedrooms and a formal lounge, is in need of TLC, but a bit of patching and quick lick of paint and Bob’s your uncle, or in this case Uncle Burt.

The nephew is the much younger addition, a huge, light-filled space, with lovely, te tured-stone floors and a bank of bifold doors onto the garden.

The kitchen has one of the biggest island benches I’ve seen in a while, a cricket pitch of lovely cool marble.

Stainless steel tops the bench flanking a six-burner stove and an oven big

enough to roast an aurochs, and a stylish long, lean window tops off a great working space. And there’s no shortage of drawers and cupboards, including a three-door pantry.

Alfresco entertaining is as easy as peeling back the doors onto the covered patio, pulling up a chair and chilling. But if things warm up simply fall into the pool to cool off.

Sitting on 567sqm there’s a patch of lawn nearby for the kids’ ball games.

The main bedroom is upstairs, where a massive bedroom has room for a couch—or two—and a balcony that looks across Mt Lawley rooftops through mature trees

in neighbouring gardens. There’s garage parking for three cars,

accessed off a rear laneway.Burt Street is in the heart of the Mt

Lawley cafe strip with a plethora of eateries and shops in walking distance.

2014 was the year when the Abbott Government

“As part of the local community our reputation is important to us.”

The Government wanted to axe the Renewable Energy Target but failed thanks to the efforts of some solar heroes

across industry and in Federal Parliament. That’s why we are holding the Summer of Solar.

This fantastic news means the Federal Government RET scheme remains in place unchanged. At least for now. But soon, the Government will be scheming

on new ways to destroy solar.

So now is the perfect time to buy. Install solar this summer to slash your power bills and show our Prime Minister you care about solar. By investing in rooftop solar you will be supporting lower

power bills, clean energy jobs and a renewable energy future.

AS I wander around Fremantle I keep a keen eye out,

wondering what ’ll find down unsuspecting lanes and alleyways.

Behind locked gates this Pakenham Street dwelling has intrigued me for some time, but here I was at last through the gates, wandering between the limestone wall of a converted stable and the pressed tin and brick of its newer companion.

Inner-city living doesn’t get any cuter than this tiny dwelling and I fell in love the minute I walked into the absolutely delightful courtyard garden. Raw limestone and rendered walls covered in a climbing ficus, planter bo esone with a decent si ed treeand terracotta paving give this alfresco area a very Freo feel.

Slide the bolt on the solid metal gate and you’re in a world of your own.

It’s an uncomplicated world with this home comprised of a ground-floor livingdining kitchen and an upstairs bedroom bathroom.

A wall of steel and glass onto the courtyard makes the living area look and feel particularly spacious and light.

Steel girders hold up a white timber ceiling and huge copper pipes add to the industrial look and feel.

The kitchen is compact but not squeezy and there’s plenty of stainless steel bench tops, including an island breakfast bar.

There’s no shortage of cupboards and drawers, andin the European style there’s even a washing machine tucked under the bench.

The bedroom is upstairs, where you’ll find room for a couch and a study nook, under a soaring cathedral ceiling.

With a wall of glass there’s no shortage of light, and a Juliet balcony gazes down the lane and across Fremantle roof tops.

All remantle has to offer is literally at your doorstep, whether it’s the cappuccino strip and its many cafes and restaurants, movies or nightclubs, or the lovely Bathers

each it’s all a stroll away. Sell the car, you can get everywhere by feet, bike, train or CAT bus.

Currently used for short-term accommodation, this is a good little earner, or a terrific home for a single or couple.

THE entertainment value of watching bad drivers and even worse

parking from the vantage of this eatery’s alfresco was well worth the ticket price of a delicious home-made lunch.

Cars were forever coming and going at the busy Bicton shopping centre so there was no shortage of laugh tape.

At one point a woman in a massive 4WD parked so close we could have put our drinks on her bumper bar.

She wandered off, oblivious to what we thought was perhaps going to be our last meal.

The owners of this dinky eatery took it on just before Christmas and the fare is mostly home-made.

I’d noticed the enticing display cabinet a couple of weeks ago, making a mental note to return.

This is nanna food, with

glistening pastries, colourful quiches, chunky sausage rolls and pies lining the shelves.

That said, the uber-trendy pulled pork tortillas have been a hit with diners, the slow-cooked pork melts in the mouth, I hear.

The pumpkin and camembert quiche was particularly glorious in its hues of yellow and gold, and for a mere $8.50 a very affordable work-day lunch.

And the side salad ($4.50) was equally as colourful and deliciously fresh.

D’Angerous Dave choose off the blackboard menu which includes chicken, lamb and steak burgers.

As it turned out it also has one of the best vegie burgers going ($13.50), a rich mix of

lentils and vegetables reduced to a delicious patty of giant proportions, served in a lightly toasted bun.

Given the great home-made food the potato gems were disappointing but the juices were made in-house and there was no denying their full-flavoured kick, especially my celery, apple, spinach and lemon, topped with chia seeds—a veritable vitamin capsule in a glass.

D’Angerous dad wanted the carrot cake but his wife wanted banana bread ($4.40): it was fortunately so good he only grumbled a little.

I loved my ricotta and plum cake ($5), a huge slice of sharply sweet cake, with a crunchy oatmeal topping, and there was no room for complaints about the coffee or earl grey tea.

The exciting rhythms of Flamenco dance are set to thrill audiences as the stunning production Tablao comes to Perth later this month. Farida Rabih, principal of Casa del Compás School of Spanish dance is delighted to be bringing such a high quality production to the west coast.

The show will feature four of Australia’s top Flamenco performers - dancers Rosalie Cocchiaro, Jessica Statham, Chantelle Cano and guitarist Damian Wright, as well as gorgeous singer Naike Ponce, visiting from Spain.

The group was a winner at last year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival when it presented its show Flamenqueando. The group will be returning to Adelaide in March for the 2015 festival, but not before treating us here in Perth to Tablao - an evening of beautiful and powerful Flamenco on Friday 27th February at Nexus Theatre, Murdoch.

AT 15 Declan Kelly was lying about his age to get into pubs. Nothing

unusual perhaps—except he wasn’t sneaking in to drink, but to play music with his band The Beefs.

“Someone dobbed us in and we were banned from pubs,” Kelly, now 40, recalls without a hint of repentance.

With few venues offering space for under-age young bands, The Beefs simply started saying they were 18, and with their mature professionalism weren’t questioned.

“It was a little white lie…but you have to play,” Kelly tells the Herald.

It’s a determination that’s stood him in good stead over a 25-year career, which kicked into a new gear when Triple J’s Andy Glitre gave him airtime

YOU won’t need a snorkel to enjoy the Fremantle Underwater Film

Festival (FUFF), just a love of all things aquatic.

It’s about raising awareness of marine biodiversity and conservation, say organisers Tania Douthwaite and Adam Coy. New Zealand’s maui dolphin, of which there are a mere 50 in the wild, is the festival’s mascot,

A local artist, marine scientist and conservationist, Douthwaite has been passionate about the

and helped fund his Tales From the Neighbourhood album back in 2005.

elly’s authentic roots flavour found an audience and he was quickly picked up by music festivals throughout Australia.

Even as a youngster Kelly was drawn to rhythm and blues, a style that gave The Beefs a unique edge at the height of ‘80s pop and dance music.

Kelly’s Maori mum Salley influenced a love of roots reggae

and Polynesian harmony, which is reflected in his songs.

“In New Zealand reggae is a bit of a universal music.”

You can catch Dave Kelly and the Rising Sun at Mojos, Thursday February 26, along with the Katie J White band.

White is often described as an “old soul” for her soulful, rock-based, funk. She’s currently based in the UK where she’s a regular at festivals and hip venues in London.

marine environment since her days at East Fremantle primary

school. y grade five teacher highly influenced me, she says.

The wife-and-husband team hope this will be the first of an annual film festival, raising funds for maui conservation, as well as issues threatening oceans such as overfishing, pollution, coral depletion and acidification.

Professional and amateur entries have flooded in, both locally and from the US, France and N . The not-for-profit is on at Kidogo, next Friday and Saturday (February 27 and 28). Tix $25.

WARNING: Don’t call any electrican until you read this

Not all Electricians are the same... most contractors don’t turn up when they say, if at all & when they do they are often rude, unpleasant & leave you with an unfair bill, a messy

house & feeling really annoyed.Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”. I know good, reliable tradies are

hard to fi nd, that’s why I guarantee you’ll have me arrive

on time. I’ll be courteous, respectful & in uniform. I will

only do the best quality work - no short cuts, then clean up after

the job & leave you with a smile. If you’re not happy at the end

you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)As pretty much every planet known to man heads into the watery depths of

Pisces, one can only imagine how fi ery souls such as yourself, are going to fare. Batten down the hatches. It’s going to be an interesting ride. Ride the tide. In important money matters, attunement is required.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) Venus has just snuck over the edge into Aries. This is a portent of things to come.

You may be swanning along feeling as comfortable as a hand in glove, but rest assured that love is going to surprise you with a kick and an adventure soon. Too much relaxation can become lethargy.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Mercury remains in Aquarius, as most of the other planets head into

the depths of Pisces. This should enable you to have insight into the feelings that others are swamped by. Don’t pit head against heart. It’s a futile quest. Respect and acceptance need to be teamed up with insight.

CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)The Moon begins her week in Pisces. This gives you access to emotions that

border on the imaginative, or the spiritual. It will be hard to remain land-locked on the sands of resistance. Life is going to drag you into feelings. Go willingly and this will be a rare and dignifi ed pleasure.

LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)This is a tricky week for fi re signs. The Sun is in the depths of Pisces, along

with numerous other planets. This somewhat thwarts your desire to rise up to the heights. Bring your gaze down from the wonders of the distant horizon. Focus on the job at hand. Excellence is born of this shift.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)With half the known planets wandering, in procession, through your opposite, Pisces,

you are severely challenged to expand and grow. Maybe it’s time to acknowledge that your messy poetic side is really there. Go and buy some bohemian clothes. Invest in hippy chic. Listen to jazz.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)A new door is in the process of opening up. Though you might think it’s taking

forever, in actual fact events are moving quickly. Impatience tends to extend time. It might seem like more things are closing down and going away, than you counted on. This is all preparation. Life is good.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)This is a good moment for Scorpions. For those who want to go there, all

sorts of depths of silence and vision are available. Take the cues. Your power is essentially available. All you have to do is grab hold of it and run. Truth is also close. This is a golden opportunity to go deep.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Venus and Mars are sneaking into Aries. The dance of love is about to fi re up, even if

everything else seems to have slowed down. This time round, the emphasis is on the getting of wisdom. It’s defi nitely not about romantic illusions coming true. So, get the wisdom. It’s readily available.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)The Pisces Moon lights you up. It’s cool light, shining over the ocean, reminds you

of all the depth, beauty and romance that is available on this earth. It’s so easy to forget, when one is swamped by diary entries and other people’s needs. Come home to the sweetness of centre.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)Mercury is the last planet left standing in Aquarius. Most of the rest have wandered

off into watery depths of Pisces. Mercury is insight at best and endless cogitation at worst. Watch out for any tendencies to become overly critical. That means you have moved away from insight.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)There are still plenty of planets in Pisces. Even though Venus and Mars

are leaving, their ripples are still being felt. Life is energising you. It is charging you up with possibility. Don’t miss the boat. Grab opportunity. Engage in the dance of relationship. Open yourself to the mystery.

The Female Of The Species is a biting comedy of revenge and shifting philosophies. Thirty years ago Margot Mason, pioneer of the 1970’s Women’s Liberation movement and fearless academic, wrote her ground-breaking work The Cerebral Vagina and numerous best-sellers followed. Now she has writer’s block. Her life is progressively turned upside down with the arrival of a devoted ex-student, a daughter crying for help, her clueless stockbroker son-in-law, an agitated taxi driver, her impatient publicist and a loaded gun! Margot must use her wits to defend her philosophies and stay alive!

Prolific Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith has created a wicked and very funny analysis of feminism, post-feminism and its effects on those who try to keep up with the ever changing goal posts. The initial plot premise is inspired by a real-life incident in April 2000, when author Germaine Greer was held captive in her home by a deluded young student.

Skilfully directed by Trevor Dhu, The Female of the Species plays at Harbour Theatre, Mosman Park Memorial Hall, 16 Lochee Street, Mosman Park. Visit www.TAZtix.com.au for shaow and ticketing information.

Iconic Freo bookshop, New Edition, is turning 30 this year. Revelling in its new premises at 41 High St in the West End, it seems an age since the bookshop’s heady days on South Terrace during the America’s Cup. The new New Edition occupies a beautiful shop on the corner of Henry Street, with old floor boards and stained glass windows, it’s proving a great location for the third chapter of the New Edition story. With renewed enthusiasm, New Edition is once again opening late 7 days a week, as it did in its heyday. The new hours of 9am to 9pm mean that, for those of us that like to dawdle in a bookshop, we can - whether it’s first thing Tuesday morning, or after dinner on a Sunday. New Edition’s first priority is, of course, the books. Long considered one of Perth (and Australia’s) finest bookshops, it continues to stock a diverse range of

quality titles with an independent bent. Whether it’s literature or science, kids books or art books, New Edition always strives to offer interesting books from all over the world - as well as from its own back yard. Some of this year’s best-sellers have been from Freo authors such as John Dowson, Bob Reece and Frane Lessac. In the next couple of months, New Edition is hosting a series of up-coming book launches and readings. Bookshops function as places to sell books but they are so much more. They are a space where conversations happen about ideas, beauty, issues, history…They offer a unique civic space in a community, open to people of all ages, creeds, and persuasions. As many long-time customers will attest, New Edition in Freo certainly fits this bill. What is different in New Edition’s third incarnation, aside from the premises,

is renewed attention to genres such as graphic novels, sci-fi and fantasy. Geeks are people too! As High Street continues its resurgence, New Edition’s place on the corner of Henry Street appears to be a great fit. Roll on another 30 years!
