Why are we here?
• To understand the WACE for 2023 and 2024
• To understand how to support your child to
choose courses for Year 11 and 12
• The process for course selection in Term 3 2022
Advance 3 years, 13 years, 23 years…..
• Advancement of digital technologies is transforming the
labour market
• You can expect to change careers multiple times
• Knowing effective career information has never been
more important
• Essential for you to understand your role in the changing
world of work
• Courses you choose may be a pathway to a group of
jobs that share similar skills
The WASSA – All students
All students receive a Western Australian Statement of
Student Achievement (WASSA) when they complete Year
12.
The WASSA:
• formally records a student’s achievement in every
course, qualification and program that the student has
completed in senior secondary schooling
• provides evidence of achievement.
For the next TWO years your child will be working on their
WACE:
90-95% of ALL school leavers in WA graduate with a WACE
• It informs an employer, TAFE and University that you have
met a STANDARD over the two years of senior schooling.
• Throughout your WACE you are working on a PATHWAY:
Either:
1. ATAR pathway
2. Non-ATAR or General Pathway
3. Voc Links Pathway
WACE Requirements:
Breadth and depth
- List A subjects and B subjects
- 20 completed units
Achievement standard
- 14 Cs over Year 11 and 12.
YOU NEED 8 Cs in YEAR 11 TO PROGRESS TO YEAR 12
English language competence
- Passed OLNA in all 3 tests
Apart from Voc Links students, all students
need to choose 6 courses
ATAR Pathways General Pathways
5 ATAR courses + 1 General course
6 General courses
5 ATAR courses + 1 Certificate course
5 General courses + 1 Certificate course
*UniReady Program will be in lieu of 1 General course
Courses:
• Content and assessment governed by SCSA
• Graded A-E
• Examinations in ATAR pathway
• Compulsory in all ATAR courses to complete the course.
• General courses still have an Externally Set Task that
students complete in exam conditions in Term 2 of Year
12
Every A, B or C you get is awarded points to
get into TAFE
Certificates:
• Content and assessment governed by a Registered
Training organisation (RTO)
• Competent or Not competent
(need to complete all units to achieve your Certificate)
• No examinations
• Gives you TAFE points for entry.
• It’s a NATIONAL qualification and is low cost for you whilst
at school.
• Maximum of 1 Certificate at school.
OLNA - How it works
• What are the three tests for OLNA?
– Reading
– Writing
– Numeracy
• Prequalification is Band 8 Naplan don’t have to sit.
• Keep having a go until passed. 6 opportunities from March
Year 10 until the end of Year 12.
• If you don’t pass, regardless of other course scores, you
will not achieve WACE at the end of Year 12.
• If your child has still not pass two or more tests by end of
year 10, they must choose the OLNA support class where
they will achieve a certificate Foundation Skills for the
Workplace and receive the intensive OLNA support they
need to pass.

ATAR Students
• An ATAR high enough to get into a course of your choice (University entry is competitive)
• Competence in English course (scaled score of 50)
• Meet any prerequisites
• Uni booklets are available from Universities in library
• University entry is with an ATAR of 70 or above. Some universities have alternative entry via portfolios and Certificate IV pathways (including UniReady Program)
ATAR = What does it stand for?
• A percentile rank
• TISC ranks students because there are more
applicants than places
• Students are numbered from 99.95 down
• An ATAR of 96 = top 4% or better than 96% of the
Year 12 school leaver age population
• 98 ATAR = scaled average of approx 84%
• Uses top 4 courses in Year 12

What is VOC LINKS?
Voc Links provides opportunities for students to prepare for future career pathways through access to externally provided VET Qualifications and the Workplace Learning Program.
• 3 days at school (Monday – Wednesday) studying 4 General courses
• 2 days attending an external training provider; TAFE course and/or Workplace Learning
• Maximum 25 students in Year 11 program
• Application process
• Students will be working towards WACE
Essential• Submission of a completed VOC Links application form with a valid USI• 85% or above attendance in year 10• Successful interview with the VET Team• Successful interview with the VOC Links team
Desirable• Passed 2 or 3 OLNA categories• C Grades or better in 2 or more MESH Courses• Maintained Good Standing in Year 10• Majority of attributes in reporting show “often” or
“Consistently”
What is my USI?
You need a Unique Student Identifier to do any
certificate course or Voc Links program…..
It is a formal Australian Government issued number
(like a Tax File Number)
……so ALL students need to get this in Year 10 in
preparation for Year 11.
• You will need to bring a photo of the front of
your medicare card to school.
A qualification is a certificate that is nationally recognised within a specified industry

Things you should know about TAFE
• Places in TAFE programs are not guaranteed • TAFE course offers are decided by the TAFE lecturers• Some TAFE courses are extremely competitive e.g.
electrotechnology, animal studies, cabin crew, nursing
• Students who do not secure and maintain a VETDSS TAFE/training placement will be re-counselled into the General Pathway
• Students can only do one Government Funded VETDSS program in Year 11 or 12
What is Workplace Learning?
Log Book
• Each day spent in the workplace is recorded in the log book
• List of tasks completed• Evaluation completed by the Employer
Skills Journal
• Questions to be completed demonstrating knowledge and understanding of workplace skills acquired
WACE Points
• 1 Unit achieved for each 55 hours completed along with the Skills Journal
• A maximum of 4 units

ATAR recommendations
• Fremantle College has an ATAR recommendation list
• Based on grades, NAPLAN Year 7, OLNA, attendance
and HOLA recommendation based on aptitude and work
ethic.
• Parents will be notified if their child is recommended
before SSO opens so you can choose an ATAR pathway.
• If you wish to do ATAR, but are NOT recommended, the
process is:• Choose a General Pathway/courses.
• Submit a Special Consideration Form for ATAR, found on the website,
to Mark Jeffery
• Be prepared for an interview and commitment to a Prep program.
You will also be notified if;
• Your child has a Voc Links application
• Needs to choose English as an Additional
Language/Dialect as one line on the timetable
• Needs to choose the OLNA program as one line
on the timetable
• Has been invited to be part of the Access Up
program
Student Support at school
• Over these weeks, visits into classes by course
counselling team and raised at last assembly.
• Connect page information as it is available.
• Week 6: Student Presentation by AP & VET
team
• Week 9: HASS classes pause for an intensive
series of learning area presentations on each
course accompanied by activities and student
workbook.
Then HOW does my child choose courses?
All students choose their course online, through a program
called Student Selection Online. (SSO)
This is found on our Fremantle College website with instructions
also found there.
When you and your child have added selections, if you need to
check them and are unsure, you can email/phone your course
counsellor to check, or make an appointment with them.
All selections MUST be complete by the end of week 3, Term 3
50% payment for Year 11 courses chosen need to be
paid by end of 2022
To access Course Counselling resources
including the Subject Selection Online (SSO)
program:

not work well with this browser.

You’ll be able to access SSO from Thursday, Week 2 Term 3
How do I login?
Once you are taken to the SSO Login page, you will need to press:
Reset Password link
Please enter your child’s Department of Education
email address (this ends with @student.education.wa.edu.au), and click Submit:
An email will be sent to the student email
address entered – please ensure it is
entered correctly.
The email received will contain a login
code which will allow you to set your own
password.
SSO Welcome Page
• Please select the Pathway your child will be taking –
ATAR, General or Voc Links
• At the end of the process it will allow you to book an appointment with your course
counsellor if you wish to discuss your selections further
ATAR/General Course Selections
• Green circles indicate courses are
available for selecting.
• Orange circles indicate your child has
not met the pre-requisites required for
this subject (applies only to ATAR
courses). An override can be requested
by clicking on the orange question
mark and writing a reason for
requesting an override for this subject.
• You can then see your request has
been submitted to the Course
Counsellor.
Override Request Approved or Declined
• You will be advised by email of the decision.
• If approved your child can then go back into SSO and select this subject.
• If not approved you will still need to log back into SSO and make an alternative selection. If you still wish to pursue choosing the course you were unable to select, please proceed through the sections of SSO and make an appointment with your counsellor to discuss further.
Selections Completed
Once you have selected your six courses and four reserves in preference number order you can move onto the next section.
At this stage, you can book an appointment to see the counsellor allocated to each student, if you wish to discuss the selections or require further clarification.
Each student will receive a confirmation ensuring each student knows their responsibilities relating to their course selections.
Parents will receive a PIN that will need to be entered to confirm they approve of the selections made.
Selection Report
A Selections Report can be printed and signed by parent/guardian. This report can be download or sent to the email address provided.
