EDITOR‘S DESK

I cannot believe that I am writing this as a free man. And by freedom, I mean the very basic things we take for granted everyday: the freedom to move when and to where we want, to sit and unwind at your favourite cafe or enjoy a weekend dinner at the restaurant of your choice.

I write this as the lockdown, curfew, restrictions or whatever you term it as, has finally come to an end. What a roller coaster it has been! I remember in mid-

March when life came to a standstill and we had no idea if we will ever go back to normal.

Let the past be in the past.

We remain forever changed. But change also brings new beginnings, opportunities and perspectives. At Muscle by Gymscanner, we remain committed to exploring the novel and unique in the world of gyms, fitness, sports and entertainment. It‘s no fun doing the same what everyone else does, is there?

Every issue of Muscle by Gymscanner out does the one preceeding it, and it‘s no different this time.

I thank the wonderful MadalinaFit for gracing the cover. She‘s one accomplished gal.

Happy reading!

WELCOME TO

MUSCLE

It seems only yesterday when we were making big plans for the future.

Today, we are cautiously op-timistic. With the world reel-ing and forever changed in COVID19, what is the outlook we are supposed to have?

No doubt the gym and fitness history was hit hard during the past 5 months. Even major, leg-acy brands had to shutter in the face of the pandemic and I can-not recall, at least in my life-time, such a profound impact upon the industry.

The fallout was swift, hard and unstoppable. The very thought that we would ever be able to

step into a gym again was con-sidered ridiculous.

The meteoric rise of online training and fitness trainers on Zoom™ was considered the next paradigm shift in fitness.

Now, when the dust is begin-ning to settle, we get back on the proverbial saddle and get back to the gym. To the things we love and matter to us.

Yes, the uncertainties were real. And even as I write this, there are restrictions on venues such as cinema, festivals, pub-lic gatherings etc. that serve a constant reminder that we ar-en’t out of the woods just yet.But at Muscle by Gymscanner

we have a saying: keep your eye on the bigger picture.

Being a global tech company, that is the core of our business philosophy. No matter what challenges we face, our focus on being the global platform for the gym and fitness industry remains unchanged.

Our dedication to empowering gyms, fitness trainers, custom-ers and businesses around the world remains the same.

But our resolve just got stronger.

Roadto recovery

But this isn’t the deadliest event that mankind has faced. The last century saw two major wars, nuclear weapons unleashed on an unsuspecting population and the shadow of a cold war that lasted 50 years...yet we moved on.

It is my belief that human nature lends itself to “moving on.” It’s somehow hardcoded in us to, in-spite of imminent danger and tragedy, to carry on with our lives.

Regardless of our personal opinions on the matter, the world has decided, at their own pace, no more lockdowns and it’s to get our lives back.

The world our generation grew up in is forever changed. With close to a mil-lion deaths, humanity lives in constant fear of a disease it has never known.

The gradual reopening of the world was an eco-nomic measure meant to plug the hemorrhaging caused by CVOID19. Despite warnings by health experts, WHO and frontline medical profession-als, economies of the world decided they had enough of the locking their populations indoors and bringing businesses to a grinding halt.

Some of the hastiest lifting of restrictions were seen in republican leaning states in the US which topped the charts in COVID 19 casualties. Despite serious warnings from his own staff, the US president forced his authority to take public life back to normal.

It’s an election year nonetheless. Regardless of what you think of resuming the status quo, the world wants to put the pandemic behind. Can it?

Till a vaccine is made available, the road to re-covery means living with the virus. Social distanc-ing, protective gear, constant washing and other adaptive measures are here to stay till billions get vaccinated and this virus is relegated as memory of the past. The gradual and cautious opening of food delivery, air travel and now fitness centers and gyms means we are willing to live under the constant threat of COVID19 and go about our everyday lives, just like we used to.

R I S E O FT R X ™With more people training at home than ever due to COVID19, a myriad combination of online train-ing, at home, on the mat, off the chair, doorway pull ups, and incline dips off the edge of our furni-ture have made it to our arsenal of get fit at home fixes. However, one workout routine that has really come to the fore is TRX - Traction Rubber X. Ad-dressing every fitness level and forcing you to deal with your own body weight, TRX has become the workout of choice for the at home crowd. That’s not to say its not popular at gyms and fitness stu-dios. On the contrary, a whole franchise system of TRX powered gyms are popping up around the world and for good reason - its practical.

All the workouts you can usually do are made more challenging with TRX. Pushups, planks, squats, core etc. I’ve tried TRX myself and you do get a really good workout in a short period of time. I also like the fact you can get it up and running in an hour; you’ll need a rod or a hook installed to the ceiling or your concrete wall.

As for costs, you can buy a TRX set on amazon.com for as little as US$90 all the way to US$200. Shipping and handling are extra depending on your location of course. TRX, the brand itself, does carry a wide assortment of products, guides that you can order online. Frankly, I’d prefer to order from TRX itself as opposed to any online retailer (amazon.com includ-ed) for the obvious benefits.

Installation is a breeze and if you are comfortable using a power drill, my advise would be to hang it from the ceiling. Literally. I know a lot of people do it off the walls or doors, but the range you get by suspending it to the ceiling (and the peace of mind it won’t snap provided you’ve done a good job) is just amazing. But you could do both. Just add addi-tional hooks and you can really expand on the range of movement.

Now here’s my favourite part: TRX studios are the next big thing. Make no mistake about it. All over the US, Europe and Australia, tiny apartments are being converted into TRX studios that handle 10 - 15 clients in 40 minute classes.

T R XS t u d i o s

By some estimates, you could get a TRX studio up and run-ning for as little as US$ 15,000. That’s less than 1/10th the cost to setup a conventional gym. And the TRX company provides a one stop solution to getting your gym up and running. From flooring to trainers, they seem to have it all.

Costs may vary according to city and real estate value.

GLOBALDOMINATION

With TRX seeming like a safe, for everyone alternative in fitness, its rapid spread in terms of TRX branded studios is not surprising. From Minsk to Melbourne, studios and gyms are adopting suspen-sion straps more than ever.

The opinions expressed in this article are of the writer alone. At the time of writing this, there exists no af-filiate or promotional agreement between Muscle by Gymscanner and the TRX brand.

For the TRX enthusiast, you can find a ton of resources, discounts, exclu-sives on the company website www.trxtraining.com. There’s even a link to setup a complete TRX branded gym. That’s what caught my eye.

Instead of experimenting and a lot of trial and error, your setup trajectory can be hastened by letting the TRX experts design and brand your stu-dio. Of course the fees and royalties would have to be negotiated, but in my opinion, this is the way to go. At the time of writing this, according to TRX’s official website, more than 60

thousand gyms and studios have been outfitted with TRX exquipment. Combine that with constant train-ing, guides and best practices, it is my opinion that TRX might become the next big thing in fitness as even major brand gyms are incorporating suspension training to their mix of equipment.

Now, all we need are some fun, com-petitive games and this can really turn into a party!

DO SUPPLEMENTSREALLY WORK?

A quick look at the multi-billion dollar supplements industry and what you should expect of your supplements.

THEREALITY DOSEAs the name suggest, supple-ments are meant to be just that. They make the missing nutrition-al value count from your diet. Be it proteins, creatine, vitamins...supplements were traditionally recommended by medical pro-fessionals in case you weren’t getting the required amount from your regular meals.

Today, supplements have be-come a claim churning industry in itself. Thousands of brands and countless products later, there is very limited amount of science on what actually works and doesn’t. And on the back of almost every product, you have the glaring statement: “These statements have not been eval-uated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

The claims makers of dietry sup-plements make on their products is ofen too vague (vitamin C pre-vents scurvy) or generic. They cannot claim that their product will have the effect as they are marketed because they do not have the scientific tests to back it up.

* A M E R I C A N C O U N C I L O N S C I E N C E A N D H E A L T H

So, are supplements a scam? No, of course not. For the sim-ple reason that some of them do work and provide the additional nutritional value.

For instance, products such as whey isolate and creatine mono-hydrate, the two staple supple-ments within the fitness industry do have scientific data to prove a marked improvement in perfor-mance and muscle recovery af-ter a strenuous workout. In fact, intake of creatine monohydrate as a supplement can enhance performance and recovery upto 10%. Both these products are safe to consume and do have an impact on performance.

Now, here’s the catch. There are literally thousands of other prod-ucts that are safe and carry no side effects whatsoever. Howev-er, their impact on athlete and at gym performance is not backed by any scientific data or clini-cal tests. Products that contact BCAA, glutamine (overhyped), fish oils have not stood the scru-tiny of clinical tests to measure any improvement in muscle re-covery or overall well being.

And then there are testosterone boosters that claim to mimic the results of anabolic steriods. Tes-tosterone boosters are a class of herbal supplements that claim to naturally increase your testos-terone levels. By directly increas-ing testosterone, or by inhibiting hormones responsible for con-verting testosterone to oestro-gen (the female hormone), these supplements are designed to help you build bigger, stronger muscles.

Some commonly used ingredi-ents, like D-aspartic acid (which increases natural testosterone production), fenugreek (which enhances creatine uptake) and ZMA (a formula of zinc, magnesi-um and vitamin B6 used to help achieve a more restful sleep) have been shown to increase testosterone levels and lean body mass. But the majority of studies examining the effects of testosterone boosters have pro-duced underwhelming results.*

While better oversight is need-ed in the supplements industry, it shows little signs of slowing down and the explosive popu-larity of some products that are even harmful.

I cannot recall the number of times people have come to me with serious injuries, dis-locations and stiffness all be-cause they spend days at the gym with little to no stretch-ing. to warmup and cardio, stretch-ing is the third of the trinity of boring that people think they can ignore in their quest for the ideal physique. But if you invest 10 minutes in avoiding injury, let me show you some very easy stretch routines that you can do anywhere. No equipment, no straps, no fan-cy stuff.

Just by getting down on the mat / rug or whatever you prefer you can kickstart your stretch. Start with some-thing easy like reaching for your toes whle sitting at the 90 degrees angle. This will not only stretch your leg and back muscles, but will give you the burn you want in your rear deltoids. My all time favourite.

This has to be THE most overlooked aspect of stretch-ing. Breathe in when you are stressing, breathe out when going to relaxed pose. Simple as that. Remember that oxygen is the key component of aerobic respira-tion. And just by accompanying your stretch routine with breathing for 10 minutes will do wonders for your heart (and possibly soul, thought I am not too sure).

If its legs day, get a good quad and hamstring stretch by a combination of squats, full bend and reaching for your toes etc. The point is: stretch with a goal in mind. It’s no point if you indulge in full body stretches every-day. Focus on the body part / muscle group you’ve worked out and follow up with a post workout stretch.

Muscle by Gymscanner magazine sits down and gets really up close with the online fit-ness sensation MadalinaFit.

Q1). Hi. Let us introduce you to our readers.

Hello! I’m Madalina Bacauanu, a 26 years old fitness trainer and personal coach. I live in Bucharest, Romania. Besides my fitness career, I love travelling, animals and fashion. I love reading, listen-ing to music (everyone knows you I can’t workout without it), but more than anything, I have a burning desire to help people and spread smiles everywhere I go.

When it comes to food, I admit I have a lot of cravings, but having a slow-burning metabolism I definitely have to weigh and calculate my intake. My diet is a simple combination, based mostly on fruits and vegetables.

My training journey began when I was 18, and I stepped into the gym for the first time. It was love at first sight. I was studying engi-neering at the time, and it hit me then that I had not known what love was until I saw my passion. I was so love struck that I would train too much, and eat too little, a mistake most people do when they go into this. I had changed 3 personal trainers because I didn’t find them to be professional, and then it hit me: I should train myself, become a personal trainer, and fill the hole in our market. And so I did! I now carry 8 years of training and 3 years of personal training expereince with over 400 happy clients in my database, from all around the world. Q2). Is fitness something you studied for, or did you just fall into it?

I fell into it at first, but after 5 years of training with different instructors, I decided to become one myself. My certificates now include: personal training, nutri-tion, kettlebell training, stretching and many more. I don’t believe studying ever stops, so I’m always looking into new ways or fresh programs I can bring to my client’s lives.

Q3). You took 2nd place at a re-cent fitness competition. How did that happen?

Yes, I recently participated for the first time ever in my life in a com-petition of sorts, and it happened that this event was the biggest Romanian event, called Wings Of Strength Romania. Funny thing, I was the only Romanian to enroll in that category: Bikini Fitness.

GLOBAL ONLINE FITNESS TRAINER

I’ve created 10 different programs that are available for subscription on my website.

Some examples would be: 14 Days Glutes Challenge, 14 Days Abs Challenge, 24 Days Gym Workout Plan, 24 Days Home Workout Plan. There is also a Nutrition Guide and many other goodies on there. All of this is very simple to purchase and access, as all programs are sent in digital downloads.

The Nutrition Guide is the only one that isn’t auto-mated because this is personalized to fit every client’s need based on their body type, age, weight, and per-sonal goals. All clients receive 24/7 support and I mon-itor their activity closely each week.

Q4). What is your online course about? How do we subscribe? What can we expect?

You can get your custom nutrition guide or workout plan by MadalinaFit from her website www.madalinafit.com and

very soon on Gymscanner website and mobile app.

Q5). How does a typical day in your life as an athlete go by?

As tough as you think! I wake up at 5am, and I walk my dog for 30 minutes. Then I go upstairs and prep my first 2 meals, get ready, and at 6:30am I head out to the gym.

By 7, I start my cardio on an empty stomach after which I can have my first meal. This is fol-lowed by meeting with my clients and workout with them, followed by my strength training. Normally I sleep after it, but I admit I don’t al-ways have time for that, but I do my best to stick to a 60-90 minute nap.

I follow that with my second round of clients, and then its dinner time. I have 5 meals a day with a 3 hour gap in between meals.

Around 11pm, I’m ready to call it night a night and start a new day with a smile!

Uuhh, good question! First and foremost: nutrition! Why? Because I crave everything!!! It’s so hard to party with friends and stick to my prepared meals. Everyone thinks there’s no harm in trying a little bit of this and that, but there is! Any-thing extra shows up on my body type right away.

Secondly: the depressive moods. Due to lack of carbs, I’ve had very difficult moments in my life where I went haywire and lost a few good-people I cared about. I just wanted everyone to leave me alone, and I would go knees deep, lost into my training.

The Gymscanner Evolution

The bestis yet to

come

Gymscanner.com was a simple yet an idea of global pro-portions: a platform to allow users to search, view and sub-scribe to gyms online anywhere in the world. At least, that was the f irst iteration.

If you study the history of anything that has survived impos-sible odds, the common trait was it had to adapt, change and evole as it grew. By being open to change, and a never ending dedication to improve user experience, Gymscan-ner is on that path of contant evolution.

What started as a simple website has become a global plat-form to sell gym memberships, gym tourist passes, online training, sports events, f itness magazines, sports exhibi-tions, self created sponsored ads and a growing library of gym videos, we consider ourselves only as getting started.

And yes, as a gym, you get your very own web-based CRM system...for free.

How a website and mobile application on gyms and fitness are becoming a global phenomenon.

Qat

aReadyThe preparations for the 2022 World Cup is in full swing in Qatar. The host country IS leaving no stone unturned in their bid to ‘Deliver’ Amazing’. Qatar has now secured around 15000 accomodation facilities to meet the demands of the fans visiting the country for the World Cup.

To ensure the delivery of accommodation options for the FIFA World Cup 2022, the Housing and Governmental Buildings Department of the Minis-try of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs (MADLSA) and the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in March 2020 to lease residential properties that would be used as lodging for visitors during the marquee event, set to kick off on 21 November 2022.

After reviewing hundreds of landlord requests to be a part of the accom-modation plan, 150 properties have been given the nod in the first batch. These are fully furnished and would provide 15,000 additional rooms for use during the tournament.

Speaking on this occasion, Yousef bin Muhammad Al Othman Fakhro, Minister of ADLSA said: “We are pleased to complete the first phase of this project and secure thousands of rooms for guests of the State of Qatar. Through cooperation with the private sector, these rooms can be used during the tournament and then leveraged for future government housing needs.”

He also confirmed that the online application portal is still open, and real estate owners can register their properties to take advantage of this distinct opportunity.

His Excellency Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the SC, commented, “We succeeded in securing thousands of rooms more than two years before the start of the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and the Arab world as a result of this cooperation with the Ministry of Administrative Development Labour and Social Affairs, and we are very pleased with this key achievement.”

Al Thawadi added, “The SC will continue its commitment to work with its local partners to provide sustainable accommo-dation options in a way that contributes to strengthening the local economy and supporting the continued development of the business sector and Qatar’s preparations to host the tour-nament.”

The government understands that this project would support the local economy through greater participation of the private sector during the preparation period for the tournament and beyond.

7 FOODMYTHSWe’ve all heard, read and even shared some very common “facts” on weight loss that were later de-bunked as plain old myths. What fuels such beliefs, that even in the age of gene backed metabolism cycles, we still fall prey to some very nonsensical and, sometimes laughable, statements on ways of eating food and losing weight?

Here are some very interesting weight loss beliefs and how they hold up against medical science.

Nope. This one is made up. If you wanna watch yourself chug down a fat greasy burg-er and it will deter you from clogging your arteries, sure, install a mirror in your dining room. But watching yourself

MYTH 1: Watching yourself eat in a mirror wil l make you consume less food.

MYTH 3: Drinking green tea helps you burn fat .

The theory here is that cate-chins in green tea work in con-cert with caffeine to burn fat, but its just that: a theory. There is no scientific evidence what-soever that green tea burns fat.

But the good news is green tea can help lower cholesterol and improve blood flow, it’s a good swap for energy drinks and sug-ar pumped sodas.

Will burn pounds off you? No. Sorry

MYTH 2: Using smaller dishes wil l make you feel ful l when you see a clean plate.

I wish this was true, but viewing clean plates as an achievement has no effect on weight loss, or stopping any cravings for that tiramisu fla-voured ice cream dessert. So yeah, this one’s a myth too.

MYTH 4: Snacking f requently prevents your metabolism f rom slowing down.

This one was probably invented by a snacks manufacturing company! No, snacking does nothing to help you lose weight except pack more pounds.

It’s like saying smoking throughout the day at regular intervals helps you prevent becoming a chain smoker. I hope you see the contradiction in there.

And before you start any diet, it’s always best to consult a certified nutritionist. I mean, don’t you think you should know what you are going to put in your body?

MYTH 5: Negative calorie foods exist such as carrots, cold water and cucumbers.

So do unicorns and dragons, but I have yet to ride either.

The idea is brilliant: some foods consume more energy to digest than they actually provide, and therefore, by eating them, you lose calories than actually gaining them. But like all works of fantasy, this too shouldn’t be believed in.

Thers is no scientific evidence for the oc-curance of negative calorie foods. Anyone hawking this behemoth of a lie probably has a wagon pulled by wooly mammoths.7

MYTH 6: Consume only apples and coffee. Want proof ? Chris-t ian Bale in The Machinist .

Yup, take a good look at Christian Bale in The Machinist and you’ l l never want to crash diet again. Any spartan diet has a detrimental effect on your long term well being. While you may lose a few pounds, your bodily functions could be irreversibly harmed by con-suming just coffee and apples.

Come to think of it . . .that’s not even a good tasting combination. I f I was just stuck to 2 food choices, I ’d go for doughnuts and karak tea. Now that’s something I could eat forever!

MYTH 7: Drink lots of water for weight loss.

Umm...no. Drinking water alone will not help you losing weight. In fact, you will gain pounds due to water retention.

While water is the foundation of any well bal-anced diet, your increase in water intake should be accompanied by an increase in physical ac-tivity. Burn calories by walking, running or any form of cardio or weight training..and then drink more water.
