We have six halls of residence, all within a short walkof the city centre and the campus. So, whether it’slectures, a session in the library, shopping or a nightout on the town, it’s all close by.

Contemporary and comfortable, all study-bedrooms arefurnished with a bed, wardrobe, chair and desk. Many areen-suite and are in flats with their own front door oraccess-only entry. All the residences are self-catering andhave shared kitchens with a cooker, kettle, microwave andfridge/freezer. Free WiFi is available in all study bedrooms.

Bedding packs may be provided for international students; please contact the accommodation office team for further details.

Alternative accommodationThere are several alternative accommodation options thatinclude private halls of residence, studio flats, shared flatsand houses. If you choose to rent in the private sector, westrongly recommend that you use the University’s officialhousing accreditation scheme, SASSH (www.sassh.co.uk).This scheme has been set up to protect students renting inthe private sector. Properties advertised on the schememust meet certain safety standards, and landlords agree to abide by a specific code of conduct.

Meet and greet serviceWhen you first arrive in Southampton, look for the Solent University Welcome Week guides in the red t-shirts. They will be at Southampton Central railwaystation and the National Express coach station on keyarrival dates to direct you to the appropriate bus stop or help you get a taxi to University halls of residence or your accommodation.

International welcome This is an opportunity to meet fellow internationalstudents, find your way around the campus and settle intothe city. It is intended for all international and EU studentsaccepted on a course of study at Southampton SolentUniversity and includes educational, cultural and socialevents. During these two days you will be able tocomplete your enrolment, request any letters you need to open a bank account or secure accommodation, and get your campus card.

International adviceOur international advice team is here to support youthroughout your student experience and to help you get the most out of your student life, from arrival to

graduation. We can provide information, advice andguidance on a wide range of issues, including visas andimmigration matters, life in the UK and employment, andcan offer support regarding any worries or questions youmay have prior to and during your studies.

English languageIf English is not your first language, you may be able totake an option in English as a foreign language (EFL) onsome courses, while on others a tutor could recommendadditional classes in English.

Health careIf you are an international student from outside theEU/EEA studying a course of six months or more, and youhave paid the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as partof your Tier 4 visa application, you are entitled to fullhealth care under the National Health Service (NHS) fromthe beginning of your stay in the UK, on the same basis as UK residents. Students on short courses of less than sixmonths should ensure that they have private medicalinsurance. EU/EEA nationals should obtain a EuropeanHealth Insurance Card (EHIC) from their home country as evidence that they are entitled to reciprocal health carein the UK whilst studying here.

Pre-sessional English courseYou can improve your academic and English languageskills before you start your undergraduate orpostgraduate degree course with one of our pre-sessional English courses. The courses are designed toimprove your English language skills to meet ourstandard course entry requirements.

Offered as either a five- or ten-week course, you will studyfor around 30 hours each week, including computer-basedsessions and tutorials, with an optional social programme.The course aims to help you improve your reading, writing,listening and speaking skills. The typical class size is 8–16students.

International Foundation YearPart of a range of extended degree programmes forstudents whose first language is not English, thisfoundation year can help you reach a standard broadlyequivalent to IELTS 6.0 overall (with a minimum of IELTS5.5 in each language skill component) before startingundergraduate studies.

Language studiesIf you want to improve your English language skills duringyour studies, classes in Academic English, General Englishand Business English are available to you through theUniversity’s Curriculum Plus programme. We also offer arange of classes in Mandarin Chinese, French, German,Italian and Spanish, if you’d like to learn another languageduring your studies.

Language centreYou will have the opportunity to improve your Englishlanguage skills in our language centre which has dedicatedmultimedia facilities with interactive learning materials.The language centre’s staff are highly experienced and wellqualified. There are many opportunities for you to gain valuableprofessional work experience through one of ourstudent enterprises. You can learn the skills required byindustry through working for clients and understandwhat it is like to work to a professional brief.

As well as local businesses, students have also gainedvaluable work experience at national events. For example,our media students are a regular feature at UK festivals,with a close relationship with Bestival and over ten years’history at the world-famous Glastonbury festival,interviewing stars and providing outside broadcast servicesto national agencies like the BBC.

Re:SoRe:So is the first fully student-operated retail initiative in a UK shopping centre, selling unique products designedand produced by the University’s creative students andgraduates. If you are a European Economic Area (EEA) or Swissnational, or the dependant of one, you are currentlypermitted to work in the UK without any restrictionson the number of hours or type of work. You will needto show proof of your status (normally your passportor identity card) to your employer as proof that youare a national of an EEA country/dependant of one.

Croatian nationalsIf you are a national of Croatia, you will normally need toobtain a yellow registration certificate (CR1) to prove thatyou are entitled to work 20 hours a week during term-time and full-time during vacations. Our courses

To help you find the right route through youreducation, we offer a variety of course levels.

Foundation (Fd) years are ideal for people without theusual academic qualifications/experience for anundergraduate degree. Over one year you’ll learn essentialstudy skills and prepare to join a specialist degree thefollowing year.www.solent.ac.uk/fdy

Higher National Diploma (HND) courses (two years full-time or three years part-time) provide work-relatedexperience and knowledge. Once completed, you’ll be ableto top up to a full undergraduate degree.

Top-up courses take place over one year and allow you to top up your existing qualification – usually equivalentto a UK HND – to a full BA (Hons), BSc (Hons) or BEng(Hons) degree. www.solent.ac.uk/top-ups

Undergraduate honours (Hons) degrees – a first degree,also called a bachelor’s degree, usually take three years,with some offering a four-year option that includes a yearabroad, a work placement (WPla) or a study abroadplacement (SPla).www.solent.ac.uk/courses

Undergraduate degrees are classified by subject type:• BA (Bachelor of Arts) – business or creative courses• BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) – engineering-relatedcourses• BSc (Bachelor of Science) – science-related courses• LLB (Bachelor of Laws) – law-related courses.

Our courses offeryou the option to study subjectsin this expanding industry suchas architecture, interior designand construction, so you can beat the forefront of the world’schanging environment. You willstudy in the heart of an excitingcity undergoing significantdevelopment, from the royal pierproject and the new culturalquarter to WatermarkWestQuay.

Lay strong foundations for a great career.

There is a strong employability focus on thecourses, with graduates experiencing highemployability rates. They often say that theyfeel well prepared starting their new roles dueto their time on the course, and go on to workin property development companies, winindustry awards on behalf of their companiesand feature in industry magazines.

The architecture and construction team haswell-established, strong industry connectionswhich allow study projects to be linked to real-world briefs, interaction on real case studies andattendance at informal employer liaisonmeetings, as well as giving you the opportunityto work with clients and employers. You will beencouraged to build industry-required skillsduring independent industry work placements,as well as throughout the course’s curriculum oflectures, seminars and practical workshops. Youwill also have the opportunity to showcase yourfinal-year projects to employers and the publicat our end-of-year built environment show, andin the past students have secured graduateemployment as a result.

With dedicated course studios and laboratories,you can experience the facilities andequipment used by industry practitioners. Our facilities include AutoCAD, Revit, AdobePhotoshop and Illustrator, Google SketchUpPro, plotters, laser cutters, a 3D printer, digitalcameras, CAD stations and Vector Works, aswell as both 3D and large-format scanners andlevelling and surveying equipment amongstothers, preparing you to easily apply your skillsin a working practice.

BA (Hons) ArchitecturalTechnologyBeing professionally accredited by the Chartered Instituteof Architectural Technologists means that the curriculummeets the specific needs of the architectural technologyindustry. Research degreesThere are three types of research degree that can bestudied for at Southampton Solent University:• Master of Philosophy (MPhil)• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – via transfer from

MPhil registration• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – direct

To gain an MPhil, you critically investigate and evaluate atopic and demonstrate an understanding of appropriateassociated research methods. You will need to showoriginality in the application of knowledge and problemsolving, and also an understanding of how the boundariesof knowledge are advanced through research.

To gain a PhD, you are required to produce a body of workthat contains a significant and original contribution toknowledge in your chosen subject area and is sufficientlyimportant to merit publication.

The majority of students wishing to gain a PhDqualification will do so via transfer from MPhil registration(option two). To be permitted onto PhD direct registration(option three), you will need to adequately demonstratethat you have substantial research skills at an appropriatelevel, such as a previous MPhil or refereed publications inan area relevant to the topic.

Research facilitiesEach full-time research student is guaranteed access to a minimum of:• IT and telecommunication resources, including the use of a PC, software and a telephone line• printing and photocopying facilities• library resources, including the inter-library loan facility• working space in the research centre• specialist in-house facilities.

Learning support facilities for part-time research studentsare more variable and are normally negotiated betweenthe intending student and the Graduate Studies Centreprior to enrolment.

Maritime, technology and environment Our maritime, technology and environment research andinnovation hub draws on Solent’s strengths in a range ofindustries, providing a forum to support the developmentof postgraduate and undergraduate research, andconducting studies that make a real impact.

The hub has a strong focus on sustainability, and ourresearchers are making important contributions acrossindustry sectors including acoustics and audio technology,the built environment, computing, maritime resourcemanagement, maritime environmental management andseafarers’ welfare – ensuring you can benefit from thelatest up-to-the-minute research and methodology.

Sport, health and wellbeingSport, health and wellbeing are integral to the widercommunity, and Solent’s research hub providespostgraduate students with opportunities for high-qualityapplied research while also supporting the needs ofschools, community groups and partners in health, leisureand other industries.

The hub draws upon a rich background of existing strengthin sport science and health-related disciplines andconnections with NHS organisations, GB diving and GBwheelchair rugby. Warsash Maritime Academy has provided first-classeducation, training, consultancy and research servicesto the international shipping, commercial yacht andoffshore oil and gas industries for 70 years.

We work closely with the global maritime sectors,ensuring that our education and training programmes notonly meet the practical needs of our customers but alsoreflect the current best practice.

The academy has internationally recognised certificationprogrammes for deck (navigation), marine engineering andmarine electro-technical officers, from initial entry as anofficer cadet up to master (captain), chief engineer andchief electro-technical officer level. We also provide a fullrange of short safety courses (mandatory and non-mandatory) to all maritime personnel for the developmentof key skills such as fire fighting and sea survival.Continuous professional development modules are offeredfor more experienced officers.

We pioneered the use of bridge, engine room and liquidcargo operations simulators for higher level training, andthese are great facilities for students to train on. We also

have a specialist ship handling training facility which usesaccurately scaled ships models and is one of only a fewmajor centres in the world. Other facilities includeengineering workshops, a fire school, survival craft, radiocommunications and a seamanship centre, as well as oneof the biggest nautical libraries in the UK.

Tier 4 (General) Student VisaIf you are an international student coming to study acourse of more than six months’ duration or a pre-sessional course to prepare you for further study in the UK,you will need to obtain entry clearance as a Tier 4(General) Student in your country of ordinary residencebefore travelling to the UK. You cannot apply for a visa atthe airport when you arrive.

The Tier 4 (General) Student Visa allows you to:• study a course of more than six months’ duration or a pre-sessional course to prepare you for further studyin the UK.• work part-time in term-time and full-time in officialuniversity holidays. Part-time means:

– 20 hours per week for courses which are at degreelevel and above– 10 hours per week for courses which are belowdegree level (foundation/IFP/pre-sessional/HND)– you may also undertake a work placement withoutobtaining additional permission if it is an assessedpart of your course.

Postgraduate loan*EU and EEA residents are eligible for a loan of up to£10,000. Students can choose to spend the loan on tuitionfees, living expenses or other study expenses such asaccommodation. EU bursary*A bursary of up to £500 is available for students fromlower income families (less than £25,000 per annum). Thisis a non-repayable, means-tested amount of money tohelp with your course costs.

Further studySouthampton Solent University alumni can receive up to a15 per cent discount on the first year of their course fees ifthey go on to further study at the University. For example,this could be applied to a postgraduate course aftergraduating from an undergraduate or top-up course.

Academic Merit ScholarshipsThe Academic Merit Scholarship is an academicscholarship awarded to international students studying afull-time course at Southampton Solent University. It isawarded to students who are holding an ‘UnconditionalFirm’ offer with the University and exceed the entrycriteria for their course. The scholarship is offered at thediscretion of the University.

The Solent Sport ScholarshipThe Solent Sport Scholarship is for students with greatpotential in their sport. For each successful applicant,academic fees are covered by Southampton SolentUniversity at 100 per cent for the first academic year andthen at 50 per cent for the second and third years.

High Performance AcademyThe High Performance Academy programme offersdifferent levels of support to students, based on theirsporting talent and potential.

By rail – take the Heathrow Express train from HeathrowAirport to central London. Services to SouthamptonCentral operate from Waterloo station. The total journeytime from Heathrow to Southampton is approximatelytwo hours. The Railair service runs every 30 minutes andpicks up from all four terminals.
