Transcript of Farakka Barrage Project – Brief Background
Farakka Barrage Project ( Brief Background)
➢ Farakka Barrage Project (FBP) is located at Farakka in
West Bengal.
➢ It is a subordinate office under the DoWR, RD & GR,
MoJS.
➢ The FBP Authority was set up in 1961 with the mandate to
execute and thereafter operate and maintain FBP complex
comprising of Farakka Barrage, Jangipur Barrage, Feeder
Canal and its associated structures.
➢ The project construction commenced in 1961.
➢ The project was commissioned in 1975.
Necessity of Farakka Barrage Project
✓ The river Ganga bifurcates into two channels at about 40 km
downstream of Farakka.
✓ The Bhagirathi, known as Hooghly in its lower reach, is the
right channel which flows towards India.
✓ The Padma is the left channel and flows for about 90 km along
the Indo-Bangladesh Border and finally joins the Brahmaputra
in Bangladesh.
✓ The Bhagirathi used to receive bulk of Ganga waters centuries
ago and ensured enough flow to Bhagirathi-Hooghly river
system leading to Kolkata Port.
Necessity of Farakka Barrage Project
o Of late, the main river Ganga started flowing towards Padma in
Bangladesh, thereby depriving the Hooghly-Bhagirathi river system
of India of much needed water.
o The Kolkata Port – the main port providing commercial outlet and
inlet for the vast north, eastern hinterland was adversely affected due
to siltation because of inadequate flow through Bhagirathi / Hooghly
river system.
o Farakka Barrage was commissioned in 1975. The prime purpose was
to divert water into Hoogly river to prevent further siltation of
Kolkata port and flushing of silt deposited.
o Subsequently, for implementation of India-Bangladesh treaty-1996
for sharing of waters of river Ganga at Farakka
