THE LEGACY OF CHARLES T. “TED” BAUER

The business school at the University of Houston was transformed more than 16 years ago when one man made a commitment to bolstering the city of Houston’s workforce through education.In 2000, Charles T. “Ted” Bauer gave $40 million to name the C. T. Bauer College of Business, igniting momentum and growth that has not slowed.

Born on March 3, 1919, in Boston, Bauer was an educational philanthropist and co-founder of Houston-based AIM Management Group.He served as AIM’s chairman until 2001 and built the mutual fund management group into the seventh-largest company of its kind globally.He served as a U.S. Navy pilot during World War II.After graduating from Harvard University in 1942, he earned his MBA from New York University in 1954. He was awarded a doctor of humane letters degree from the University of Houston, where he committed to support the College of Business Administration in 2000 with a $40 million gift.Bauer died on June 28, 2004. The college named in his honor on the UH campus celebrates his legacy annually with Bauer Pride Day. The top students each year are also recognized with Ted Bauer Leadership Awards.Thank you, Mr. Bauer, for your commitment to student success and enabling Bauer graduates to build a better future.


GUEST SPEAKER

Bruce Williamson Chairman, President & CEO Southcross Holdings and Southcross Energy Companies

Bruce A. Williamson’s experience as a senior energy industry executive virtually spans the entire energy value chain, including exploration and production, midstream and downstream, pipelines and electric power.Williamson was named chairman, president & CEO of both Southcross companies in January 2017. The Southcross companies are midstream oil & gas companies with significant operations in Texas,

Mississippi and Alabama. Previously he was chairman, president and chief executive officer of energy holding company Cleco Corporation from July 2011 until the sale to a private investor group in 2016 when he retired from Cleco. While at Cleco he delivered almost a 100% total shareholder return, implemented sweeping cultural changes including a corporate safety, diversity and environmental compliance. He also raised Cleco’s dividends over 60% and eliminated all unregulated business, refocusing the company back on its core electric business functions. Prior to Cleco, Williamson was Chairman and CEO of Houston based Dynegy Corporation. At Dynegy, Williamson implemented a culture of ethics and compliance for which he received an award from the President’s White Collar Crime Task Force. Williamson also restructured Dynegy outside of bankruptcy and reduced Dynegy’s outstanding debt by more than $10 billion. He also led the electric power industry by entering into the first fleet-wide consent decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice to clean up coal plant emissions of NOx, mercury and other particulates across the Dynegy coal fleet. Williamson retired from Dynegy in 2011.

Williamson started his career in 1981 with Shell Oil Co., where he worked primarily in the exploration and production and financial functions, advancing to Assistant Treasurer. In 1995, he joined Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co., later known as PanEnergy, advancing to Senior Vice President Finance & Corporate Development and led the negotiations to merge PanEnergy with Duke Power to create Duke Energy in 1998. At Duke Energy, Williamson was President and CEO of Duke Energy Global Markets, with responsibility for all globally priced commodity businesses, international businesses and engineering and services business outside of the regulated electric business in the Carolinas. Williamson has served on the boards of several public and privately held companies in the US and Canada. Williamson earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Montana and a master’s of business administration from the University of Houston. He is active in UH, serving on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the C.T. Bauer College of Business and the UH Board of Visitors.

The Honors College Honors

The Honors College at the University of Houston offers students special opportunities to develop their academic abilities. Below are the Honors College honors designations.

University Honors with Honors in Major Students who complete the Honors College curriculum (36 hours) and complete a senior honors thesis.

University Honors Students who complete the Honors College curriculum and elect not to complete a senior honors thesis.

Collegiate Honors and Collegiate Honors with Honors in Major Students who fulfill the requirements for the honors program in the college of their major, including 21 hours of honors courses; who complete an Honors College minor, or who complete 21 hours of approved honors courses. If students also complete a senior honors thesis, they graduate with Collegiate Honors with Honors in Major.

Membership in The Honors College and Membership in The Honors College with Honors in Major Students who affiliate with the Honors College during their undergraduate years and complete fewer than 21 hours of honors courses. If students also complete a senior honors thesis and fulfill the requirements of their major with distinction, they graduate with Membership in The Honors College with Honors in Major.

Honors in Major Students who complete a senior honors thesis but are not members of the Honors College.
