Better Than Ready went on to win eight of his 16 starts for trainer Kelly Schweida including three at Listed level and was also Group 1-placed.

“I have got an affinity with the stallion having bought him as a weanling for the guys that raced him and he has done a wonderful job with 14 individual winners,” Blaxland told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“She was a cracking filly and the mare has thrown a lot of winners. I thought she was clearly the best filly in the sale and she just happened to be by Better Than Ready, the sire of the moment.”

Blaxland, who had provided strong competition for Harron when he purchased the Spirit Of Boom colt on Monday, indicated the filly would be given her chance on the track before Christmas in a bid to target the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast in January.

“She can go straight to the breakers and we genuinely think can be back here in January and if not she can have a tilt at the ($500,000) Jewel two-year-old race next year,” he said.

Offered by Better Than Ready shareholder Yarramalong Park as Lot 338, the filly is out of winning mare Licenced To Chill (Choisir), whose seven foals to race have all been winners. The filly is also a granddaughter of the Listed winner and Group 1-placed mare The Big Chill (O’Reilly).

Blaxland also bought a Rich Enuff colt for $55,000 yesterday and will be sent into training with Anthony Freedman. The Kenmore Lodge-consigned colt, who was catalogued as Lot 260, is out of four-time winner Fantastic Glen (Fantastic Light).

“We have tried to buy a Rich Enuff all year and for whatever reason we haven’t been able to acquire one but Anthony is a big fan of the stallion,” Blaxland said. “He is a really nice colt and well bought on the market.”

Second Better Than Readyfilly for Gundaroo Stud

Len Hoyle and Robin Lees’ decision to target the progeny of Better Than Ready also gathered pace yesterday when the Gundaroo Stud syndicate outlaid $120,000 for a filly by the stallion.

Gold Coast-based trainer Scott Morrisey, who works alongside his father John and has had a long-standing relationship with the Gundaroo Stud syndicate, said the brief was to focus on fillies by Better Than Ready after signing for the filly on behalf of the stud.

Hoyle and Lees had already bought a Better Than Ready filly for $135,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale earlier this month.

“The sire is obviously doing a good job. The colt of Kelly (Schweida’s The Odyssey) is a nice horse and Gundaroo was keen to get one. They got one down south and they got another one today,” Morrisey told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We were prepared to go a bit more to get her if we had to and for a while we were thinking she wasn’t going to go for as much as she did but she is such a nice filly.

“That often happens when there were a few people on her.”Yesterday’s Gundaroo Stud-purchased filly is the first foal out of the

three-time winner Hearts’n’diamonds (Show A Heart) and was offered by Queensland’s Tipuana Farms. She was catalogued as Lot 293.

“Bruce McLachlan used to train Hearts’n’diamonds and she did a good job on the track and this filly is a lovely walking filly,” Morrisey said.

“She has a beautiful overstep but that doesn’t mean much after the sales. You have to throw the book out and the reality sets in. She has got the size and scope to go early. We’ll break her in and do a bit with her and if she wants to go early she can but if not we’ll put her away.

“The Gundaroo boys are not ones to usually push their horses early. Even if she is a nice filly we might be able to put her away and have her for the Jewel next year.”

The filly will be sent to Matt Park at Symphony Lodge at Oakey to be broken in.

Lyndhurst Stud also sold a Better Than Ready colt yesterday to Alexandra Fleming and Toowoomba trainer Tony Sears for $130,000 after he was initially passed in.

Better Than Ready, whose 2018 service fee of $9,900 (inc GST) is sure to be increased significantly this year, sold 45 yearlings at an average of $50,667 at the March Sale, finishing the auction as leading stallion by aggregate.

Spill The Beans colt a Page turnerSpill The Beans, who won at Group level three times for trainer Gerald

Ryan, was one of the busiest stallions when he went to stud in 2016, covering 202 mares, and yesterday one of his best credentialed first crop yearlings to be offered at auction went through the Gold Coast sales ring.

The $170,000 colt by the Queensland-based Aquis Farm sire was bought by Gold Coast trainer Helen Page, making Lot 346 the second most expensive yearling sold by the stallion this year.

“He’s a magnificent colt. Big and strong and a really athletic colt,” Page said.

“I was impressed with his x-rays and the vet was glowing on the colt and that gave me great confidence to buy him.

“He’s very much like his half-sister Reindeer Moon who I train and we’ve had a lovely association with. She’s just needed a bit of time.

“Spill the Beans is an up and coming young sire, quite exciting and he might be the next young top stallion for Queensland.”

The Tullyard-consigned colt, who is only surpassed in the sales ring by a colt who made $280,000 at the Gold Coast in January, is a half-brother to six winners including the stakes-placed Old Trieste (Hinchinbrook), who was runner-up in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) as a two-year-old.

He is the eighth foal out of the winning, stakes-placed mare Love’s Great (Choisir) is also a half-sister to Woodstock Hussey (Hussonet), the dam of stakes-winning Aquis Farm-based sire Kobayashi (I Am Invincible).

Rugby league legend Gouldset for Rich experience

Earlier, a $100,000 filly sold on day two by first season sire Rich Enuff will be raced by rugby league legend Phil Gould and his friends including well-known owner and breeder Damion Flower.

Gould teamed up with Jadeskye Racing’s Flower and the filly’s Gold Coast-based trainers Bryan and Daniel Guy to secure the Daandine Stud-consigned yearling with a view of targeting the lucrative QTIS bonus races available in the state.

Furore (NZ) (Pierro)Winner of the Hong Kong Derby (2000m)

New Zealand breds have won 6 of the last 10Hong Kong Derbys.

Flower, who owns the Platinum Park operation at Hawkesbury where Brad Widdup trains out of, revealed Gould had expressed a desire to race a horse with the Guys and was only too happy to join the syndicate and play his part in selecting the yearling.

“Our idea is to race QTIS horse up there,” Flower told ANZ Bloodstock News. “You look at the Tony Gollans, the Chris Munces with all the horses they are getting, they are making good prize-money and making it to the (Magic) Millions races as well.”

“When I looked at the $500,000 QTIS Jewel race on Saturday, I thought ‘wow’ and Phil came to me … and said he had a group of mates and asked me would I like to help them buy a horse.”

The third six figure yearling sold yesterday, she is the first foal out of sprinting mare Excepts (All Bar One), who was victorious three time. She is also from the same family of STC Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner German Chocolate (Kenny’s Best Pal) and she was catalogued as Lot 255.

Flower said he and Bryan Guy spent two days inspecting the March Sale yearlings and focused on QTIS eligible fillies by stallions Spirit Of Boom, Better Than Ready and first season sires Spill The Beans and Rich Enuff.

“I reckon Rich Enuff stamps them in the rich chestnut (colour) that they are and they have good bodies on them and, to me, they look like they are going to run,” he said.

“I went up there for two days. I went over the main crops and all the yearlings by those stallions and she looked the most precocious and she was the type of filly to have a crack at.”

Flower said the filly had been popular during inspections and had her marked around the $100,000 mark but would not have been surprised if she went for more than she did.

“I thought she was around $100,000 and maybe a bid (more) but Bryan, who has seen a lot of them and I respect that, thought about $150,000 and thank God he was wrong.”

Later in the session Mishani Enterprises’ Mike Crooks also bought a Rich Enuff filly for $120,000 from KBL Thoroughbreds. Catalogued as Lot 317, she is a three-quarter sister to the juvenile-winning Miss Kindilan (Written Tycoon), who is the first winner out of the placed-mare Kalseru (Octagonal).

Crooks also bought a filly by Deep Field (Northern Meteor) from the Kenmore Lodge draft for $100,000 yesterday.

Rich Enuff averaged $63,250 from 12 lots sold and as results finished the sale as the second leading sire by average (three or more sold) behind Newgate Farm’s first season sire Super One (I Am Invincible), who had three lots sell at an average of $76,667.

The 2019 Magic Millions March sale closed with the average falling by 26 per cent compared to last year’s sale, but the comparison is unfair given the inflated results after the popularity of Spirit Of Boom last year.

The average closed at $33,716 at a median of $25,000, the latter the same as last year, but it is up on the 2017 figures. The average at the March sale two years ago was $28,818 while the median was $22,000.

In total, 292 yearlings were sold for an aggregate of $9,845,000 at a clearance rate of 80 per cent.

“Today’s sale like many other sales this year showed that quality lots were keenly sought after,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said.

“Having some 16 yearlings sell for $100,000 or more is a pleasing result for the sale.”

“Last year’s sale was unprecedented and this year’s auction will go down as the second best Gold Coast March Yearling Sale of all time – which is great for buyers in particular considering the prize-money that these horses can race for every week here in Queensland.”

A small catalogue of horses were also offered at the Gold Coast Autumn Racehorse Sale yesterday, with Marsupial (Street Cry) bound for Singapore after the Godolphin-consigned four-year-old was bought by Box Eight for $150,000.

The stakes-placed gelding has won four of his 20 starts.

Outside draw for Yes Yes Yes

Meanwhile, previous favourite Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) drifted out to $7 after drawing the widest barrier in the field of 16 plus three emergencies. The exciting colt won on his first outing for Chris Waller in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at his last start having arrived from the stable of disqualified trainer Darren Weir and jockey Blake Shinn’s confidence was dented marginally in the aftermath of yesterday’s barrier draw. "My initial thought is obviously a little bit deflating," Shinn said. "But it is what it is. We can't change it. We'll just have to come up with a game plan and there's a lot to unfold. But at the end of the day I've got a horse I believe that can win the race."

‘Barrier ideal for Free Of Debt’Connections of Free Of Debt (Unencumbered) were left feeling happier than most at yesterday’s Golden Slipper barrier draw after the colt drew gate ten, but will jump from barrier eight should the two emergencies fail to gain a start. Free Of Debt fared best of those on the speed when third in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and trainer Chris Bieg is confident of another bold showing, despite his odds of $34. "He doesn't know he is $34 and he will be giving them a scare on Saturday,” the trainer said. "I think from there (10) we are not dictated to what we actually have to do. Where he is, is perfect really. One out and one back in the run would be my best outcome I think."

Hayes optimistic about Lankan StarA plum draw, gear change and the prospect of an improving track have boosted co-trainer Ben Hayes’ optimism about Lankan Star (Nicconi) outrunning her odds in Saturday’s Golden Slipper. After finishing second in the Blue Diamond Stakes, the filly ran down the field on the Heavy 10 surface in Saturday’s Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). “We elected to ride her quiet in that race (Magic Night) and when she jumped well we dragged her back and we probably should’ve just ridden her where she was comfortable,” Hayes told Racing.com. “Stewards deemed her a little lame after the race but I’m not too worried, she’s nice and sound this week, she’s eaten up and done everything right. We’ll put some blinkers on her and we can ride her a bit more positively like we did in the Blue Diamond.”

Berry after Guineas boiloverTommy Berry is warming to the chances of dual New Zealand Group 1 winner Madison County (Pins) causing an upset in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) on Saturday. Berry rode the gelding when fourth behind the re-opposing The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and feels testing ground would give the gelding his best chance to topple the hot favourite. "I'm really excited about seeing him at the 2000 metres," Berry said. "He worked on the course proper at Warwick Farm that felt like a heavy 10 and he never skipped a beat. A wet track might take away a bit of the brilliance from The Autumn Sun, which is what we need because if it was anything from a soft to better than that I think he is going to be very hard to beat."

Danzdanzdancearrives in SydneyMultiple Group 1-winning New Zealand mare Danzdanzdance (Mastercraftsman) has arrived in Sydney for a tilt at Saturday’s Ranvet Stakes

(registered as Rawson Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) and trainers Chris Gibbs and Michelle Bradley believe the likely heavy track will be in her favour. Danzdanzdance won the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) on soft and heavy tracks and was runner-up last start in the New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), again on a heavy surface. “Michelle is really pleased with the way she has travelled and said she ate about two thirds of her feed, despite arriving quite late, and she has drunk plenty of water which is the main thing,” Gibbs said.

Mornington back-upfor Self SenseDavid Brideoake is giving strong consideration to backing up Sunday’s Yarra Valley Cup (1950m) winner Self Sense (Street Sense) in this weekend’s Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m). The dual-purpose gelding has won 14 of his 58 starts, with four of those victories coming off of a one week back-up or less. "I was really happy with him on Sunday and I am considering running him here Saturday," Brideoake told Racing.com. "He loves the track and he's done well in it (Cup) before. There's good competition but when this horse is in form, he seems to be able to do it.”

Ashlor to tackle theHareeba Stakes Wangaratta trainer Dan McCarthy has already accepted to run Ashlor (Hard Spun) in the Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Mornington on Saturday but will strongly consider scratching the five-year-old gelding should he draw poorly. Ashlor heads into the $200,000 contest having defeated last weekend’s March Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner Widgee Turf (Turffontein) at Wangaratta on March 3. "It's always good when your form is franked and generally with Ashlor the form has been all the way through his career,” McCarthy told Racing.com. “If he has been beaten, generally what horses have beaten him home then comes out and runs well. He's bouncing out of his skin, done a treat and he's very fit and well."

Heir To The Throneto make delayed returnThe Henry Dwyer-trained Heir To The Throne (Pentire), a brother to 2015 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Prince Of Penzance, is set to make his return to the track at Sandown Lakeside today when he lines up in the Le Pines Funerals Handicap (1300m). The four-year-old was successful over the same distance in December before running third over 1600 metres at Flemington on New Year's Day. "He got loose off the pony at Caulfield one morning after his most recent run at Flemington," Dwyer said. "He galloped a couple of laps of the track and it took the stuffing out of him. "If he can win (today) it'd be great, if he can't he'll be better second up over a mile."

Innes to ride inAlbury Gold CupLightweight Sydney jockey James Innes Jnr will make this week the best of his career if he can win Friday’s $180,000 Albury Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) for co-trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Innes, the son of former leading Sydney rider Jamie Innes, has been entrusted with the ride on the lightly-raced Taikomochi (Snitzel), giving him the opportunity to win his second country feature race in a week for the Waterhouse-Bott team. Innes landed the 200th win of his career when he rode Chocolatier (Redoute’s Choice) to an all the way win in the Bathurst Cup (1800m) for the stable on Sunday.

Currie seeks QCAT stayToowoomba trainer Ben Currie has lodged a stay application against a decision to stand him down and hopes to have it heard by the end of the week. Currie was stood down after stewards charged him last month with seven offences including the use of a jigger. On February 20, Currie was granted a stay which was to remain in place for five days after an internal review was determined. On Monday, the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission's internal reviewer, Kane Ashby, confirmed the stewards' decision to stand Currie down pending a result in the case. It means unless Currie gets a stay he will be unable to train after next Monday.

Conners bows out a winnerHeath Conners has bowed out of training in style with his final runner Neurotic (Nicconi) winning at Bendigo yesterday. The victory came just days after the trainer also had a winner with his final city runner Villa Sarchi (Written Tycoon) at Flemington. "This is pretty good, but Saturday is still probably the best," Conners told Racing.com after Neurotic's Bendigo victory. "The win at Flemington was everything." Conners says he is comfortable with his decision but hopes to be able to stay in the industry.

Revamped Kilmore could return by year’s endKilmore Racing Club manager Ben Murphy has said that work to the track has progressed to schedule so far and the club was looking at a possible return to racing before the year's end. Last April, officials hastily abandoned a meeting at Kilmore after two steel stakes had been hammered into the track near the 400-metre mark and pointedly, in the running line for horses as they were just two metres off the inside rail. No further objects were found in the six months until the track underwent major renovations, which included the relaying of a large part of the track surface. "We are looking to the end of the year at this stage but we'd rather the track be 110 per cent right to go so we're taking a conservative approach to our return to racing," Murphy said.

Gately joins Sky RacingVictorian form analyst David Gately will join Sky Racing next month after crossing from rival Racing.com. Gately will work across a number of Tabcorp’s media platforms including Sky Racing, Sky Sports Radio and RadioTAB and social media channels. “I am extremely excited to be joining the Sky/TAB team,” Gately said. “I have been a fan of Sky Racing since its inception way back in 1985 and dreamt of working with the organisation, pretty much, from those very early days. Horse racing is sport, it is entertainment, and as such, I feel, should be fun. It is my strong desire to ensure those who consume racing at any age, enjoy the experience of this wonderful sport.” Gately starts with Sky Racing on April 1.

Sydney plans delayedfor RondinellaExciting four-year-old Rondinella (Ocean Park) will not head to Sydney to take her place in the Ranvet Stakes (registered as Rawson Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) on Saturday, but a trip across the Tasman still remains on the cards for the Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained four-year-old. “She’s not heading to Sydney this weekend, but we certainly still have some hope that she will get over there,” Wellwood said. “There are two main options, there’s the BMW or the Chairman’s. She has had a fair bit of racing in a short period of time and to give her another race on a surface that doesn’t suit her just wasn’t ideal this weekend and the rain doesn’t look like it’s going to stop in Sydney.”

Shinn booked to ride Platinum InvadorHaving enjoyed an easy few weeks since finishing third in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), Platinum Invador (Redwood) is now being aimed towards the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) on April 6, with Blake Shinn set to ride the gelding in his Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) warm-up race. “He had a week in the paddock after the Derby,” trainer Lisa Latta said. “He looks fantastic. He has been with Chrissy Bambry on the water treadmill and she sent me a video of him on Saturday and he was running around his paddock like he hadn’t raced for weeks. He will fly to Sydney next Monday and we’re going to go to the Tulloch. He has proven he can back-up, so we thought that was a good option.”

Bary happy with VinnieHawke’s Bay trainer John Bary was pleased with Vinnie’s Volley’s (Iffraaj) fifth-placing in the Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Trentham on Saturday and he is hoping the filly can gain some black-type by season’s end. “I was very proud of her. It was her first time in the big leagues,” Bary said. “I know she had a light weight, but she ran fifth and was one and a-half lengths off some of the big boy sprinters in New Zealand, so I was very pleased with her.” Bary is eyeing the NZB Finance Sprint (Listed, 1200m) at Hastings next month with his charge before putting her out in the spelling paddock in preparation for the spring.

NZ breeders togather at Te ArohaMembers of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and budding breeders are set to assemble for The NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) Day at Te Aroha on April 6. “The Breeders’ Stakes has a great history being the only Group 1 race restricted to fillies and mares,” Association president John Thompson said. “It always attracts a very good field and has been won by some great mares that have had great influence such as Tidal Light, Ballroom Babe and Gold Hope.” All members in attendance will be in with a chance to win a free stallion service to Highview Stud stallion Wrote (High Chaparral).

Beauty Generationtrials wellThe John Moore-trained Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) appeared to be in fine health

Sha Tin yesterday, galloping with his usual enthusiasm during his 1000-metre barrier trial. The six-time Group 1 winner, who is unbeaten in his last seven starts, is being prepared for a tilt at the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) on 28 April. “He’s doing it all so easily at the moment and he’s enjoying what he’s doing,” jockey Zac Purton said. “This trial was better than his last trial before his previous race. He’d had a few runs and done a fair bit of work going into the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup, so that load was starting to take its toll, but he’s had a nice freshen up.”

Southern Legendto DubaiSouthern Legend (Not A Single Doubt) has been given the green light to travel to Dubai today, after pleasing trainer Caspar Fownes with a smooth trial over 1200 metres on the all-weather track. Southern Legend was not asked to overexert himself ahead of his tilt in the Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) at Meydan on 30 March, where he is likely to face Japan’s

superstar filly Almond Eye (Lord Kanaloa). “He was having an easy trial and I’m very happy with him,” Fownes said. “It’s going to be exciting going across for the big race; it’s going to be tough against some serious horses, especially Almond Eye from Japan, but again, we’ll go there and try our best. It’s a US$6 million race and that’s what we’re here for, to get these horses up to a level where we can go overseas and compete and hopefully bring back some glory for Hong Kong.” Dylan Mo has graduationin his sights at Happy ValleyDylan Mo heads into today’s eight-race card at Happy Valley only one win away from his 70th career success and the 25-year-old is upbeat about his chances of notching that apprenticeship-ending victory. “I have a couple of good chances; all of them are in very good form,” Mo said. Mo has six rides on the night, including last start-winner Circuit Glory (Tavistock) in the feature, the Class 1 Happy Valley Vase (1800m).

While trainer Heath Conners’ decision to walk away from racing has again brought a focus on the viability of

“smaller” yards, I’d maintain there’s been a discernible and positive change to the mood of Victorian racing and its training ranks through the past month or two of the autumn carnival.

The fairytale rise of Mystic Journey and the overwhelming social media engagement generated by the All-Star Mile have had something to do with it but chiefly, like it or not, it’s been because of the expulsion of Darren Weir.

It’s not so much that other trainers have had their barns filled with horses formerly trained by Weir. After all, most of the good ones have gone to a select few. More that there’s a sense of liberation and a greater spread of the prize-money pie which is key and should be even more so in the wake of Conners’ move.

Let’s not beat about the bush. Many trainers have long harboured reservations

about Weir’s methods but, it should be noted, his four year ban centres “only” on the possession of jiggers and his better horses have - on the whole - not gone backwards for their new trainers. Those reservations, as it sits right now, are unsubstantiated and certainly treading on dangerous ground if for no reason other than let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

However, we do know that Weir had a massive edge in numbers and maybe it’s as simple as that.

Weir trained 40 winners a month through the first six months of this season so, in his absence since early February, it’s reasonable to suggest that around 70 wins have gone elsewhere.

And, in his absence, it seems there’s many other trainers who are well and truly up and about.

Mick Price has just turned 60. You might have thought he’d be contemplating slowing down and spending a few more weekends hammering his Yamaha around the Great Ocean Road or the Phillip Island track. Instead, he’s expanded his training bases and taken on a young assistant trainer, Michael Kent junior.

John Sadler landed a double, to widespread congratulations from many colleagues, at Flemington on Australian Cup day. It was his first double on a major race day for some time.

Phillip Stokes has established a base at Pakenham and “killing them” when you imagine he might well have been content to have stayed in Adelaide and launch his regularly successful Viking-like raids across the border. A man who’s always been a touch media shy, he’s now frequently and obligingly interviewed.

Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra have landed two Group 1’s for the season. They’re up and about having bought 12 yearlings at Melbourne Premier which is twice the number they bought two years ago.

Robbie Griffiths is a perennial purchaser at that sale but even he went home, this year, with six more yearlings than the ten he signed for in 2018.

The stocks of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace continue to rise; Pat Carey has a 33% winning strike rate over the past month; Tommy Hughes boasts four wins and six placings from his past ten to the races; Matt Laurie’s had eight winners in February and March; Anthony Freedman’s stable has been in great form.

Clinton McDonald, Matt Cumani, Patrick Payne, Ken Keys, Brent Stanley, John McArdle, Robert Hickmott and the aforementioned Carey and Conners have all been among the Flemington feature race day winners this month despite not having the numbers of the so called major stables.

Tony McEvoy continues to grow as a major player at the top end; a young Lloyd Kennewell is making his mark and Nigel Blackiston looks to be re-energised with his move to Ballarat from which base he trained his first winner yesterday.

Not all of this, of course, is directly related to Weir but it is all genuinely invigorating!

As to the viability of trainers across the board, the obvious first step is an immediate freeze on major race prize-money and a halt to the introduction of any more multi-million dollar races, notwithstanding the success of the All-Star Mile. The focus should be on continued increases to prize-money from the middle to the lower top end - the higher benchmark races at the provincials and standard midweek and Saturday city races.

MORE THAT THERE’S A SENSE OF LIBERATION

AND A GREATER SPREAD OF THE PRIZE-MONEY PIE WHICH IS KEY AND

SHOULD BE EVEN MORE SO IN THE WAKE OF

CONNERS’ MOVE

Steve MoranTough for trainers but mood more positive

The Mystic Journey storyBreeder Ralph Zito is not “kicking the cat”

despite parting with All-Star Mile winner Mystic Journey for just $11,000 as a yearling.

“Given the choice between the two (being owner or breeder) I am absolutely 100% confident I would have opted to be the breeder,” Zito told RSN’s Michael Felgate on Monday, “because, and I’ve heard Rick Jamieson say this previously, the satisfaction is immeasurable and in fact it’s eternal. Having bred a Group 1 winner who is the rising star of Australian racing and who looks like she’s ready to take the mantle of the greatest horse (Winx) we’ve had in the country for generations is absolutely overwhelming.”

I interviewed Zito for ANZ Bloodstock News early last year, after he won the Sale Quality with Mystic Journey’s half brother Leodoro, and his updated story - I think - is one worth re-telling.

Where to begin the story of the intriguing Dottore Zito - specialist pathologist, breeder and olive oil producer?

Perhaps in 1950 when his father Giuseppe emigrated from a troubled post-war Italy. Son Raffaele followed, with his mother Concetta, in September the following year. “We’ll call you Ralph,” his first Australian teacher told him. These days, ironically, there’s any number of

Raff’s and Rafael’s enrolled at primary schools and not necessarily of European extraction. Perhaps courtesy of Señor Nadal.

His father was a painter but not of the Caravaggio school, pardon the racing pun. "Although he and my mother were both top of their class, their education was limited to grade five for economic and gender reasons,” Zito said. “After migrating, dad worked for the railways and painted trains…until he and mum established one of the first Family Fare self-service groceries in Coburg in the late 1950’s. Due to my mother falling ill, we then returned briefly to Italy before resettling in Australia in 1963.”

Or we could fast forward to the mid 1990’s when friend Angela Dupuche, daughter of Wally Broderick who owned the 1965 Melbourne Cup winner Light Fingers, took him to the Mornington stables of former New Zealander Theo Howe.

“I’d had a lifelong interest in racing which really began with a fascination for horse’s names and I was later to read a lot of books on breeding, but at the time this was a new experience for me - going to the stables and I immediately loved it. Loved the smell and feel of it,” he said.

That fateful morning, he was to inspect two horses - bred by well known New Zealander

Bernie Vanston - out of the Three Legs mare Princess Phoenix. They were Desert Phoenix and Steel Phoenix.

“I spent the next two weeks manually analysing their pedigrees and then rang Bernie. We spoke for three and a half to four hours on the phone and, by the end of the call, I’d taken a share in both horses,” he said.

Steel Phoenix, who would later twice win the Chairman’s Handicap (Group 3 - variously 2600m and 2400m), won on debut at Cranbourne in September 1977 and Desert Phoenix did likewise at Mornington eleven months later. “The die was cast,” Zito said.

Indeed it was with Zito, influenced by the most famous of Italians - at least in the racing and breeding game - Federico Tesio, to embark on passionate breeding endeavours beginning with two daughters of Princess Phoenix whose granddam Sanctimonious had produced the high class King Phoenix, whose victories included the MRC (then VATC) Group 1 double of the Rupert Clarke Stakes (then Marlboro Cup) and Toorak Handicap (then Elders Mile).

Those daughters were Shu Shu Lara and Te Akau. The former would produce the Zito’s Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes winner Miss Steele who continues to be prominent in the family’s breeding interest.

Miss Steele has a filly foal by Medaglia D’Oro who will be offered at Inglis Easter (Lot 129). “We might sell her. You can’t make ends meet by breeding non-commercially and while it was a huge financial risk to go to a stallion like Medaglia D’Oro, he was the best mating for her,” Zito said at the time (last year).

He also said then, before Mystic Journey usurped Miss Steele with a Group 1 win. “While Steel Phoenix is probably the best horse we’ve had, our best result as owner-breeders was certainly Miss Steele winning the Group 3 as our whole aim was to produce a black-type mare,” Zito said. That success was among more than 80 odd wins by horses they’ve bred and/or raced.

The proceeds of Miss Steele’s Group 3 win were reinvested in the purchase of Hussonet mare North Sea who was in foal to Smart Missile. It was pinhooked to the China Horse Club and races as Aim Smart, in New Zealand, where Group 3 placed last September from just six starts.

“We bought her to mate with Statue Of Liberty which is an incomparable pedigree and we have an unraced three-year-old colt named Sea Wolf with Michael Kent,” he said. Kent, of course, also trains Leodoro and did train Miss Steele.

Zito also has the Rory’s Jester mare Canicula who had a Zoustar filly sold for $240,000 at the 2018 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale (Lot 289). Named Shih Tzou, she was a debut third to Catch Me in the Blue Diamond Preview but has since died.

Te Akau, the second of the aforementioned daughters of Princess Phoenix, is the dam of Jayemzed who is the sire of Leodoro. He is out of the Colombia mare White Gold who, has of course, since produced the Group 1 Australian Guineas and All-Star Mile winner Mystic Journey.

Plus there’s the two-year-old Mystical Pursuit, unbeaten in four starts, who is a three-quarter sister-in-blood Mystic Journey. Mystical Pursuit is the second winner from Oh So Gold, an unraced half-sister by Savoire Vivre to Mystic Journey,

She was a $28,000 Magic Millions Tasmania purchase for Wayne Roser who’d bought Mystic Journey for just $11,000. She, like Mystic Journey, is trained by Adam Trinder.

Te Akau is also the dam of Tavette who produced Nesbo, a winner at Caulfield on the same day as Leodoro in July 2017 while Bianca Bay, an unraced daughter of Te Akau by Bianconi, is the dam of Group 1 Levin Classic winner Dukedom.

The Zitos’ also bred and raced the super mum White Gold who won two races and, likewise, Leodoro’s sire Jayemzed who was trained at Mornington by Theo Howe’s son Barry Howe and, in an injury shortened career, won five races and recorded a black-type second in the Listed Anniversary Vase over 1400 metres at Caulfield.

Zito has shared his racing and breeding interests with friends Joe and Rhonda Cichello

and John and Diane Button since the death of Vanston. “We’ve been friends since form three at Fawkner High School. It’s called John Fawkner College now so we’re old collegians! We’ve been even closer over the past ten or twelve years with racing giving us another reason to socialise,” he said.

Zito may be pedigree passionate but, refreshingly, is not myopic about the pursuit. “There are so many factors in making a successful horse but I would argue that pedigree is the starting point, reinforcing strong ancestors. Like my compatriot Tesio, I believe in line-breeding which is the path most successful long term breeders have followed,” Zito said.

As to Zito’s award winning Olio Zito Extra Virgin Olive Oil, even that has a racing connection.

They have 4000 trees planted on one quadrant of the four which were sold when former trainer Steve Watkins’ Cresta Two property, at Tuerong on the Mornington Peninsula, was subdivided. Others in the precinct being the exquisite training centre Denistoun Park and Tarcoola Stud.

Consistency and durability are two of the most admired qualities in the racehorse. Six-year-old mare Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense) has

shown these qualities throughout the past three seasons so despite her odds of 20/1 she was a popular winner of last Saturday’s competitive Coolmore Classic (registered as TAD Kennedy) (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill Gardens, her first success at the highest level.

The Group 1 came at her 30th race start and was her seventh win, others including two renewals of the Guy Walter Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and two of the Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) but

along the way the mare has picked up another 12 stakes placings, two in Group 1 contests, and has had to overcome many wide barriers. Dixie Blossoms has now earned $1,363,910 for her owner/breeder Alan Osburg.

Just as consistent as the mare is Dixie Blossoms’ trainer, former champion jockey Ron Quinton who prepared three previous winners of this race, Ofcourseican (Mossman) in 2012, Peeping (Redoute’s Choice) in 2016 and Daysee Doom (Domesday) last year after twice riding to victory aboard champion Emancipation (Bletchingly) in 1983 and on Miss Personality (Vibrant) in 1974.

On Saturday, Dixie Blossoms was burdened with top weight of 56.5 kilograms on a heavy track but a brilliant ride by Christian Reith saw her dash through a gap in the straight to defeat Group 1 winner El Dorado Dreaming (Ilovethiscity) by two and a half- lengths, with Princess Posh (Canford Cliffs) charging home late for a distant third in 1:31.97.

Dixie Blossoms is likely to have one or two more starts during the Sydney autumn carnival before retiring to stud, a possible mate being Trapeze Artist who will begin his breeding career at Widden Stud in September.

Alan Osburg, a racing partner in champion sire Exceed and Excel (Danehill), bought Dixie Blossoms’ dam Whistle Dixie (Star Way) for NZ $50,000 as a yearling in New Zealand in 2000. She showed some ability, winning a 1200 metre provincial race and twice placing in metropolitan contests in Sydney.

Whistle Dixie got off to an unpromising start as a broodmare when she missed in three of her first four seasons, producing Dixie Lass (Exceed and Excel) as her first foal in 2005. This filly was able to win four sprint races including one in Brisbane.

Best of Whistle Dixie’s early foals was the gelding Excel (Falbrav), originally named Able Green, who became a Listed stakes winner in Macau, but of the mare’s four winners, her last foal Dixie Blossoms is by far the most accomplished of her progeny.

While Whistle Dixie’s dam Proteaceae (Kaapstad) was unraced she bred seven winners and was out of an outstanding producer, Australian-bred Gone With The Wind (Light Wind), mother of eight winners, three of them stakes winners with dual Group 1 winner Zonda (Zabeel) the standout.

Another of Gone With The Wind’s foals was Magnolia Hall (Noble Bijou), a multiple black type winner and multiple Group 1 placegetter who finished third to Let’s Elope (Nassipour) in the 1991 VRC Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

Gone With The Wind is a three-quarter sister to Group 1 winner

Sou’Wester (Light Wind) and a member of the Sunshine Express (White Ensign) family developed at Woodlands Stud in NSW when under the directorship of the late George Ryder, originator of the Golden Slipper.

Dixie Blossoms is the 12th Group 1 winner and one of 57 stakes winners produced by daughters of former leading New Zealand sire Star Way (Star Appeal) and joins the likes of champion sire Encosta de Lago (Fairy King), Monaco Consul (High Chaparral), Carnegie Express (Carnegie), Black Bean (Raami) and Coco Cobanna (Casual Lies).

Along with Hallowed Crown (Street Sense) and another mare, Politeness (Street Sense), Dixie Blossoms has now become the third Group 1 winner in Australia for her sire, former Darley sire Street Sense (Street Cry) who was champion two-year-old in the United States in 2006 and winner in 2007 of both the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and the Travers Stakes (Gr 1, 10f).

Street Sense spent five seasons in NSW but his patronage declined year-by-year and he has not returned since covering 52 mares in 2012 after peaking in his first season in 2008 when he served 131 mares.

There is plenty of scope for owner Alan Osburg to devise some interesting matings for Dixie Blossoms as her pedigree is an outcross to five generations, the closest duplication being a 5m x 6m double of unbeaten champion and champion sire Ribot (Tenerani).

Dixie Blossoms

Thoroughbred Breeders Australia providing an opportunity for all

For Alyssa Pickles, the greatest satisfaction from working in the breeding industry for the past eight months has been developing

friendships with colleagues and the chance to work with horses every day.

Alyssa got her opportunity in breeding when she was accepted as one of 15 trainees taken on by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia’s Fast Track program last year and placed with Kitchwin Hills stud.

“The relationships you make with your TAFE friends and also your stud family. You’re working with these people every single day, you form a connection.

“And you also get to work with horses every day, even at TAFE.”

Fast Track is designed to create an opportunity for young people with a passion for horses to secure a foothold in Australia’s vibrant thoroughbred scene.

The scheme is a collaboration between TBA, breeders and Scone TAFE. Applications are now open for 2019 and will close on March 31 ahead of a 12-month program that starts in late May.

During the program each trainee studies for a Certificate III in Horse Breeding – a formal qualification which is nationally recognised.

Already it has the support of many leading studs.

“I would absolutely recommend to anybody to get behind this,” said Royston Murphy of Sledmere Stud, who have taken on a trainee.

“I think we really need to push these initiatives and we’ll definitely be taking on some more people every year.”

Successful applicants are placed with a respected farm where they gain hands-on experience via a traineeship, while also completing their studies.

The TAFE component of the program includes two intensive learning blocks (6 weeks in total) and includes 16 formal study modules.

All facets of the breeding industry are covered in the modules, including:

• caring for broodmares • foaling • handling young horses• mating procedures• disease prevention• horse behaviour

One in 310 Australians is a racehorse owner.

Play video and learn why.

WE CAN TEACH THE TRAINEES FROM THE

GROUND UP TO START ON A STUD AND LEARN

FROM THE GRASSROOTSARTHUR MITCHELL,

YARRAMAN PARK STUD

The 2018 Fast Track intake

Yarraman Park director Arthur Mitchell says Fast Track is a perfect introduction to the industry.

“We can teach the trainees from the ground up to start on a stud and learn from the grassroots,” he said.

“Whether they stay in breeding or go on to another role in the thoroughbred industry, I think this is a great way to get a career off to a good start.”

Cecelia O’Gorman of TBA, who co-ordinates Fast Track, said the program is addressing a shortcoming in the industry.

“As an industry, we haven’t always done a great job of promoting ourselves and the myriad of jobs that are out there. There’s a lack of formal pathways into the thoroughbred industry,” O’Gorman said.

“Fast Track was developed to address this by offering a formal qualification with on-the-job training, and provide a solid platform for people to then go on and have a successful career.”

Trainee Lachie Pethica - who always wanted to be involved in the thoroughbred industry but had no idea how to do so - credited Fast Track with providing a means of turning a dream into reality.

“The program has confirmed my belief that this is what I want to do,” Pethica, who is based at Yarraman Park, said.

“It strengthens your idea of where you might end up. Because it’s so wide-ranging and you meet so many people and see so many farms, the idea of what you’re going to be in the future really develops.

“And you’re exposed to the best

people in the industry, and they’re more than willing to help you along the way. That’s a tremendously valuable thing.”

TBA chief executive Tom Reilly said he hoped Fast Track would attract students from across the country.

“In our first intake we had students from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia and I really hope we can offer places to some people from Western Australia and Tasmania as we want it to be a truly national initiative,” he said.

“We can place trainees with farms in any state so hopefully there’s no reason anybody shouldn’t apply, no matter where they are based.”

One person who recommended all to apply is Kitchwin Hills’ trainee Alyssa.

“If I knew anyone who didn’t know what to do in their life, even if they’re not interested in horses, I would definitely recommend it.”

For more information on the program including the online application form, visit tbaus.com or email [email protected].

Farms interested in being involved should call Cecelia O’Gorman on 0411 696 036.

VERDICT Cases can be made for a few of the runners in what looks a fairlyopen race but another chance is given to BINGO HERO, who

disappointed when dropped to this grade for his latest start but has posted somegood efforts over 7f in Class 4 company this season, often shaping as though today’slonger trip might suit. Habitual front-runner Lucky Storm is second choice. GoldenCannon, Never Better and Showing Character are others to consider.

latest mark might just be beyond him and preference is for THE SHOW who got aconfidence booster in Class 5 company before running well over C&D in this gradelast month. Roman Odyssey is likely to try and make all and has the perfect stallfrom which to attack.

VERDICT Despite top weight, DRAGON PIONEER looks capable of a boldshowing after his recent display over C&D last month and he gets

the vote ahead of Speedy King who has held his form well this campaign andshould have a role to play in this. Dream Come True looks best of the rest.

VERDICT Waldorf who likes to come from off the pace doesn’t have thebest of draws in stall 1 and will have to negotiate traffic problems

in the straight so preference is for GAMECHANGERS who scored over C&D inJanuary and has continued to run well. His latest second over C&D reads well in thecontext of this race. Telecom Puma showed enough on his Hong Kong debut tosuggest that with the experience gained he could have a say in this.

VERDICT Despite his huge price there was no fluke about the win ofMAGNIFICENT when he dead-heated with Encouraging over

C&D last month and, with the form being franked on Sunday, he is taken to follow upthat success. Har Har Heart will be popular with Zac Purton up, but he’s rising upthe weights for not winning and he has a wide draw to negotiate. Harmony Heroalso has a wide draw to overcome but he should be competitive and looks to beimproving.
