Department of English

1. Introduction

The illustrious Robertson College established in 1836 in Jabalpur, renamed Govt.

Mahakoshal Arts and Commerce Autonomous College began the teaching of English

at the undergraduate level in 1896 along with the other humanities subjects. In 1939,

post-graduation in English was introduced and till1969 it remained the only

Department in Jabalpur to offer post-graduate degree in English. The Department in

the long course of its history has had a number of eminent scholars as teaching

faculty, who led this Department by example, setting a high benchmark which made

this the most sought after Department of English. Some of the illustrious Heads of

the Department of English are Dr. S. C. Sengupta, eminent critic of Shakespeare,

Prof. G. C. Chatterjee, Dr. Swaminathan, Dr. P. K. Sen, Ex Head the Department of

English, RDVV, Jabalpur, great scholar and man of letters, Prof. Mrs. M. J. Pinto Ex

Head the Department of English, Govt. M.H College of Home Science, Jabalpur,

Prof. Mrs. K. Trivedi, Ex Principal, Govt. Mahakoshal College, Jabalpur, Prof. D. K.

Besides conventional teaching following innovative modes of teaching are used:

• Traditional lecture method followed by Students assignments and presentation.

prescribed/ Power Point Presentations on various topics.

• Use of Digital Multimedia Language lab & smart class room to teach Communicative

English using Wordsworth English Langauge Lab Software.

• Virtual Classes for undergraduate and postgraduate Students

• Use of Blog/ Slideshare, Google Classroom and WHATTSAPP groups to share notes

and text. Online resources for reference material.

• Internet browsing, online access to e-books & e-journals through Open educational

resources such as DELNET, INFLIBNET & N-List.

• Invited lectures from experts / Interdisciplinary lectures.

• Students are provided with additional study material and old question papers.

• One to one interaction/counselling

• Use of Board Magazine to share knowledge

• Use of bright students for helping weak students, role play, recitation of poems/ prose.

• Student‟s seminar/ group discussion/ Short lectures by students on given topics.

Non conventional Methods of Evaluation used for internal exams are:

• Assignments and its presentation/ poster making/preparing objective questions

followed by quiz/ microteaching.

process of establishing the language lab by making a proposal. The lab established with the

equipment grant of UGC is equipped with 31 computers, projector, interactive board,

multifunction photocopier and soft ware for teaching English Language. Later music system

was also installed in the lab.

Report of Communicative English Course 2013-14

Short term course of 54 hours organized by Department of English from August to October

2013. 68 students of UG, PG registered themselves for the course. Two batches were made.

The focus of the sessions held in the course of fifty days was on listening and speaking. 7

modules of introducing yourself and others, asking information, how to requests, how to give

suggestions, giving instructions etc were covered in the basic course. Innovative mode of

role play was used after Audio visual presentation of the topic through Wordsworth English

Language Lab software in Language lab. Dr. Abha Pandey was the convener of the course.

48 participants successfully completed the course.

Report of Communicative English (2014-15)

A short term certificate course of Communicative English for three months was conducted

by the department for the students. Wordsworth English Langauge lab software was used for

interactive and participative learning. The course commenced in August 2014 and ended in

October 2014. Dr. Abha Pandey was the convener of the course. 32 students were enrolled.

24 participants successfully completed the course.

Report of Communicative English for 2015 – 16

The Department of English organized a three month certificate course from August – October

2015, under graduate and post graduate students were registered for this course. Using audio–

visual aids. Students were given chance to communicate in English. All the members of the

department contributed in improving the listening, speaking, reading and writing skill of the

students. In this course students were taught how to introduce themselves, how to ask

questions, give suggestions etc. On 4th

April 2016, the course concluded with a written and

oral exam. Dr. Neelu Raghuvanshi and Dr. Meena Keller were Course co-ordinators. 15

participants successfully completed the course.

Report of Communicative English Course 2016-17

The Department of English, Government Mahakoshal Arts and Commerce Autonomous

College Jabalpur, conducted a three month “Certificate Course in Communicative English”

from 10th

August 2017 to 10th

Short Term Certificate Course in Communicative English organized by Department of

English in session 2017-18 course was inaugurated by Captain Suneel Bhardwaj on 10

August 2017. The three months certificate course started from 10 August 2017 to 30 october

2017 . The course was based on theory and practical Audio visual training using Words

Worth Language Lab Software. Twenty seven students registered for this course. Dr. Pratibha
