CORONARY HEART DISEASECoronary heart disease (CHD) is a narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. CHD is also called coronary artery disease.

CORONARY HEART DISEASESCauses:

1. Fatty material and other substances form a plaque build-up on the walls of your coronary arteries. The coronary arteries bring blood and oxygen to your heart.

2. This build up causes the arteries to get narrow.

3. As a result, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop.

CORONARY HEART DISEASESymptoms:

1. It may feel heavy or like someone is squeezing your heart. You may feel it under your breast bone (sternum), but also in your neck, arms, stomach, or upper back.

2. The pain usually occurs with activity or emotion, and goes away with rest or a medicine called nitroglycerin.

3. Other symptoms include shortness of breath and fatigue with activity (exertion).

CORONARY HEART DISEASETreatment:

1. Blood pressure less than or equal to 140/90 (even lower for patients with diabetes, kidney disease, or heart failure)

2. HbA1c levels if you have diabetes at a level recommended by your doctor

3. LDL cholesterol level less than or equal to 100 mg/dL (even lower for some patients)

ARTERIOSCLEROSISArteriosclerosis occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from your heart to the rest of your body (arteries) become thick and stiff — sometimes restricting blood flow to your organs and tissues.

Causes:

1. High CholesterolCholesterol is a waxy, yellow substance that is found naturally in your body and also in certain foods you eat. This substance can increase in your blood and clog your arteries. It becomes a hard plaque that restricts or blocks blood circulation to your heart and other organs.

2. FatEating foods high in fat may also lead to plaque build up.

3. AgingAs you age, your heart and blood vessels work harder to pump and receive blood. Your arteries may weaken and become less elastic, making them more susceptible to plaque build up.

ARTERIOSCLEROSIS

ARTERIOSCLEROSISSymptoms:

1. Chest pain (angina)

2. pain in the leg, arm, and anywhere else that an artery is blocked

3. shortness of breath

3. Fatigue

4. confusion (if the blockage affects circulation to the brain)muscle weakness in the legs from lack of circulation

ARTERIOSCLEROSISTreatment::

1. cholesterol-lowering medications, including statins and fibric acid derivatives

2. antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulants, such as aspirin, to prevent blood from clotting and clogging the arteries

3. beta blockers or calcium channel blockers to lower blood pressure

4. diuretics (water pills) to help lower blood pressure

5. angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which help prevent narrowing of the arteries

EFFECTS OF SMOKING TO OUR CIRCULATORY

SYSTEM

EFFECTS OF SMOKING TO OUR RESPIRATORY

SYSTEM

REFLECTIONWhy should we avoid smoking? Well you just saw the reason why. Numerous diseases can be caused by just one stick of cigarette. Take note, only one stick can open the doorway of possibilities that you will damage your body, especially your respiratory and circulatory system, which is in charge of the breathing and circulating process respectively. When you smoke, your lungs will be damaged resulting into the malfunction of your respiratory system. Also, when you smoke your heart is one of the affected parts that causes less oxygen to be delivered to the different organs of the body.

You see, even though smoking may seem as a safe thing, it truly is not. Not only to the smoker himself, but also to the people around him, so the next time you see someone smoking it’s either you tell him to stop it or keep away from him. Our group hopes that the government will implement more rules to prevent the smokers and also the non-smokers from damaging their life.
