Year 2 Streaming Talk 2012
Streaming Involves…
12
• Choice of technical elective modules for your specialization
• Consists of levels 3 and 4 modules
• Generally taken in years 3 and 4
• The combination of outer core, breadth and depth modules
ensure you have sufficient breadth of knowledge in
different areas of ECE, as well as specialized knowledge in
one or two areas.
• This is to prepare you for a career in ECE-related industry or
R&D, or academic research (postgraduate study) in ECE.
Year 2 Streaming Talk 2012
Streaming Involves…
13
• The choice of technical elective modules must satisfy the
Technical Elective rules. These are defined on
“concentration” (i.e., NOT defined on recommended
“track”).
• Failure to meet the requirements can delay graduation!
• Choose the technical elective modules wisely to ensure that
(i) outer core, (ii) breadth and (iii) depth requirements are
achieved in your B.Eng. Program.

Technical Electives
15
• Consists of 3 baskets of modules, of which you choose a minimum of 32 MCs
• Outer Core Modules (Level 3 modules) (A)
• Level 3 Breadth Technical Electives (B)
• Level 4 Depth Technical Electives (C)
• The technical electives are organized into 10 different “concentrations”.
Year 2 Streaming Talk 2012
Technical Electives
16
• Outer Core modules: Electives which are essential to the area of specialization.
• Breadth modules: Provides broad understanding of concepts within an area of specialization.
• Depth modules: More specialized and provides greater depth & coverage.
• There are about 90 technical elective modules available (8 outer core, about 30 breadth and more than 50 depth modules).
Only 8 technical elective modules need to be taken over the 3rd and 4th years.

Technical Electives
17
In choosing the technical electives (TE), please note the following:
•Technical Elective rules
•Pre-requisites must be satisfied – this will determine the order in which you take the modules (most modules are not offered every semester!)
•Changes in requirements and electives (c.f. previous year), e.g.,
• change in semester in which a module is offered
• new/removal of technical elective modules
• change in pre-requisites
• changes in title, code and syllabus
•Refer to the most current version of TE in the Master List file at:
http://www.ece.nus.edu.sg/academic/undergraduate/ee/Electives.html

Recommended tracks
• A track groups together a number of modules which are useful for a particular topic (either of research or industry), e.g., wireless communications in the Comms. & Networks, or optoelectronics in Microelect. Tech. & Devices.
• A total of 23 tracks are recommended for EE students. For the full list of recommended tracks, refer to the Tracks List file in the following link:
http://www.ece.nus.edu.sg/academic/undergraduate/ee/Specialization.html
28
Year 2 Streaming Talk 2012
Recommended tracks
What is the difference between concentration and track?
A track is a guide:
•A recommended track is merely a guideline, e.g., to students who wish to have a career in a particular industry.
•It is NOT compulsory to read all modules listed in a particular track.
•You may even mix and match modules to create your own track.
ECE Technical Elective rules (choice of TE) are based on concentrations, not tracks
•Hence, it is crucial to know which modules belong to which concentration.
•Even though if you have taken all modules in a track, it does NOT necessarily mean that you have satisfied the specialization rules.
•You must ensure that rules to achieve breadth & depth requirements are satisfied (based on concentrations).

Planning your study schedule
Do a semestral workplan for the four semesters in Year 3 and Year 4
Do a FFG check, and then put in the remaining modules to be fulfilled in
semestral workplans of Year 3 and Year 4. Check which semesters the modules
are being offered.
Make sure that all graduation requirements are accounted for in all Year 1 & 2
modules, and in the semestral workplans of Year 3 and Year 4.
Make sure the modules are done in the right sequence – i.e. you have the right
pre-requisites.
Regular do an FFG check:
http://www.ece.nus.edu.sg/students/FFG_Checklists.html
Do a CAP projection
CAP calculation: http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/ugrad/SI_caps.html
It is important to plan well before the CORS bidding period. Once again, failure to
meet FFG requirements may delay graduation.

Announcement
Change in S/U policy for FoE Tech Electives
•In the past, students have been able to convert technical electives to UE modules and
then exercise S/U after the results are released.
•This practice is disallowed effective from AY2011/12 for all students, not just the
cohort of 2011/12.
•With effect from AY2011/2012, all FoE technical electives (regardless of module type
code 12 or 27, taken to fulfil technical elective rules or UEM respectively) will be on
graded basis i.e. students cannot exercise their S/U option for these modules.
•The practice of conversion to UEM is still allowed but the S/U exercise will not be
allowed.
•Please refer to http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/ugrad/SI_su_policies.html .
