Personalized learning creates opportunities for students to pursue higher education and to become more excited and engaged with their own learning. Students need to become engaged and enjoy what they are learning in order to feel like they are successful. Much like human faces every human brain is different, and because there is not one type of brain that teachers can teach to, the initiative for personalized learning opens up opportunities for students to take control and become interested in their own learning. When students take their learning in their own hands, they can know what works best for them to become engaged in their learning. In Vermont this change is tak- ing place right now. Act 77 was passed in Vermont, in 2013, it is “An act relating to encouraging flexible pathways to secondary school completion”. This act encourages dual enrollment, expansion of early college, and increased work based learning.This helps to give students the experience that many employers are looking for to be able to hire qualified work- ers. This law is helping to set stu- dents up for more of the success that they need. At CHS the process to more personalized learning is rapidly growing.There is a class which is new this year called the Extended Learning class. In this class students are able to choose their own topic and complete research and internships to ulti- mately create a project based on what they have learned. CHS senior, Courtney Dessormeau recently researched a project on makeup. She completed an internship at Colorlab Cosmetics in Williston and learned a lot of interesting facts about the cosmetic indus- try and how she could possibly develop her own. Another senior,TJ Brown who has an interest in music made his own guitar. Mr. Thime who teaches the class was very excited about how students showed much more engagement and really seemed to enjoy the learning. According to Ms. Pedrin, who is in charge of the Personalized Learning Plans at CHS, "A Personalized Learning Plan is a document or series of docu- ments all put together that is worked on by students in collab- oration with parents or teachers or administrators to help devel- op a plan to explore interests, set goals and pathways for a stu- dent's four years in high school and then beyond that”. Though it is not currently implemented with every stu- dent, her and a team of other teachers and students are work- ing towards having a PLP for every student at Colchester High School. The Veterans of Foreign Wars(VFW) recently held an essay contest,Voice of Democracy Rules. The pro-gram was open to students in grades9-12 who were enrolled in public, pri-vate or parochial high school or homestudy program in the United Statesand its territories. This audio-essaycontest was established in 1947. Eachyear it provides high school studentswith the opportunity to expressthemselves in regards to the demo-cratic and patriotic theme provided.“My Responsibility to America” was

The recent horror movie, Get Out, writtenand directed by Jordan Peele, has attracted alot of attention in recent weeks. It made an es-timated 33 million dollars at the box office itsopening weekend and continues to attractpeople of all ages and backgrounds.The film chronicles Chris, a young black man

going to meet his white girlfriend’s parents.What seems like a minimally stressful situationturns into a full blown nightmare as Chrislearns a horrifying family secret and strugglesto “get out”.The horror factor is without a doubt, genius.

Peel slowly builds on eeriness and dread andhas a slow yet intense build of beautifully fiercehorror that will have the viewer's skin crawling.Yet, the movie is not simply a scary one.Theentire movie is an insightful social commentaryon the prevalent topic of racism. Peele tacklesthe topic well, pointing out society’s short-comings and framing it in a way that is accessi-ble to all types of people.

Peele strategically directed the storyto unite people. Chris's character is already auniting factor for people in the audience asthey band together and root for him.Peele alsoutilizes his background in comedy, as he wasthe co-host of Comedy Central’s Key andPeele, in order to provide comedic relief to theintense film.

Peele understands the difficulty and

complexity of dealing with plot lines about racebut “it’s more healthy for us than the other ver-sion, which is let's ignore it all”, according tothe Business Insider.

Most horror comedies are deemed“spoofs” and known for their cheesy andridiculous portrayals, yet Peele makes thehumor natural and relatable. He integrates re-alistic comedy into the film to provide a “re-

lease for the audience” and make a very in-tense conversation more easily had.

Get Out is a unitive film that is in-credibly relevant to today’s society. Not onlydoes it address racism head on, but it is a veryentertaining movie.The blend of horror andcomedy is beautifully executed in a way thatwill have viewers on the edge of their seat.

Pushing back thestart of school is not agood idea. Some mightask, "What highschooler doesn’t wantto sleep in?" but if youlook closer you can seethe flaws. School start-ing later will affectafter school activitiesand parent schedules.

Sports prac-tices and games will start later. This will be aproblem in the fall when it gets dark earlier.If both Junior Varsity and Varsity play on thesame field for games there is a chance thatthe second game will be cut short if it’s toodark to play. Practice will have to start laterwhich means students will be home later. Alater arrival home means there is less time forthe student to complete homework. Studentathletes will have to sacrifice sleep in order tofinish their assignments. This means that thelater start time does not benefit student ath-letes. They will have to stay up later and will

probably end up getting the same amount ofsleep as they did with an earlier start time.Even without the later start time many stu-

dent athletes have to stay up late in order tofinish their work after practice or a game. Ifschool were to start two hours later, a mid-night bedtime becomes 2am. Staying up thislate will not be beneficial to students. It willmake it harder for them to focus and there-fore their grades may suffer. If this occursstudent athletes will be forced to choose be-tween their sports and their grades.

School starting later affects par-ents’ schedules as well. Some parents, espe-cially those with underclassmen, may not becomfortable letting their child wait for thebus when they’re not home. If school startslater, parents’ may have to negotiate withtheir bosses to come in later for work. Thisis definitely not possible for all parents.

The negative effects of a later starttime for both students and parents outweighthe benefits.

Anything new implemented in a schooldistrict should not affect a student’s ability tobe successful.

ColchesterHigh School(CHS) seniorpercussionist ,Connor Zwonik,performed in the90th Annual NewEngland MusicFestival (NEMF)hosted by the

Brien McMahon High School inNorwalk, Connecticut, March 16through 18. Zwonik, who has per-formed in the festival all fouryears of high school career, wasthe only CHS student to partici-pate in this year’s music festival.

More than 400 studentsfrom around New England partic-ipated in the festival, which cul-

minated with three concerts bychoral, band and orchestra en-sembles on March 18. Studentsauditioned for the opportunity toparticipate in the music festival inNovember. Those selected re-ceived their music in advance ofthe festival then came togetherfor an intense day and a half ofrehearsal before performing.

Zwonik was one of 86 stu-dents who participated in the or-chestra ensemble. Theorchestra, conducted by JohnEells, performed the followingpieces: Polovtsian Dances #8 (byAlexandre Borodin) and #17 ;Waltz for Masquerade Suite (byAram Khachaturian); and ANighton Bald Mountain (by ModestMussorgsky; Rimsky-Korsakovversion, 1867).

Many of you knowTupac Shakur for his last-ing impression on the hip/hop rap scene. Buthad he made an impression in the rock scenetoo? On April 7th 2017 Tupac was the firstsolo rap artist to be inducted into the Rockand Roll hall of fame.This is a controversialsubject for some people for many differentreasons. Some people believe that Tupacshould not be inducted into the Rock andRoll hall of fame.They believe that only rockartists should be able to be inducted in. Somepeople don’t like the fact that there is no raphall of fame at all.They think that they shouldmake one. Tupac was inducted in by fellowrapper Snoop Dogg.Many people did not likethis either, they think it is not a place for rap-pers. But being Snoop Dogg he got a good re-action from the crowd.

During the induction they auctioned offsome of Tupac’s things like some hand writ-ten lyrics and a bullet struck medallion wornby Tupac. Last year Kendrick Lamar inductedrap group NWA into the rap hall of fame.Hehad a lot to say about the culture and move-ment of hip/hop rap and how it is more thanjust the genre of music. It’s more of like tellingthe story of where you are from and whatyou're about.This year was different though,Obviously Tupac will not be physically there

to celebrate and accept his induction. SnoopDogg made a speech that he read for the oc-casion. He talked of times he remembered ofwith Tupac. Snoop talked of happy memorieslike the time Snoop andTupac were parasail-ing together on vacation while Suge Knightdrove the boat. It's a crazy scene to thinkabout: two extremely famous and influentialpeople parasailing together.Tupac left a very

big impact on hip hop today. You still hearpeople playing his music and say his namewhen they mention the greats. In honor ofTupac and the clothes and style that he cre-ated with the wheat timberland's and the tiedbandanna.RapperT.I dressed in a fullTupac in-spired outfit from the black leather vest tothe tied bandanna.Tupac's art will be remem-bered for years to come.

It's springtime, and that means promseason. Most of the promposals havebeen enacted and students are begin-ning to make their final plans for thespecial night.Unlike past years when prom was

held at the Hilton in Burlington, thisyear's prom will be held at the barn atLang Farm in Essex Junction. Thetheme this year is Masquerade.The Prom will be held on May 20th,

from 7:30 to 10:30. Doors will close at8:30 so be sure to get there before then.If students are planning to bring aguest that is not a Colchester student,they will need to pick up a form in theAttendance Office, and turn it in byMay 17th.Tickets will cost $40 per individualand go on sale Monday, May 8th. Stu-dents can buy the tickets fromMs. Re-naudette, in the Attendance Office.Cash sales only are accepted.

Touring a sugar farm during the winter in Ver-mont is an iconic activity. The snow coveredgrounds and sweet smell of maple floatingaround is a great time for friends and family tocome together.Maple sugaring started when Native Ameri-

cans realized sap was dripping from the trees onwarm, spring days. Each day, there would bemore and more piled on the ground, so the Na-tive American’s decided to put buckets under-neath and keep it. One day a woman poured thesap on her meat, like a marinade. She immedi-ately smelled the maple scent and it tasted evenbetter. Ever since that day, Native Americans

boiled the sap with the help of settlers, whobrought wooden spouts, buckets, and covers.Donald Schroder owner of the sugar farm,

Poor Farm Sugarworks, has been a local maplesyrup producer since the late 90s. With the helpof a few friends, he goes through the process ofchanging it to 6% sap, boiling and then filtering.He makes “about 10 gallons of finished prod-

uct an hour,” he says. It's a lot of hard work fora small amount of product. Donald's wife, Va-lerie, makes maple cream, butter, and candy dur-ing the season. They sell the candies, and keepthe cream and butter for themselves.The state of Vermont provides the grading of

the syrup for businesses. It comes in a kit withfour different shades of syrup made from fooddyes. Once the syrup is made, it's matched to acertain color in order to determine the grade.From there, it's poured into different sized jugsand labeled with the appropriate grade. Thelighter colors are more sugary and delicatewhereas the darker colors have the strong, mapletaste. Going to a sugaring house is definitely anessential for Vermonters and tourists.

Many studentsdon't know aboutthe arts programsoffered at Colch-ester High School.One particular classthat is often over-looked, but pro-vides a greatexperience is AP

Art. In this advanced class, studentsparticipate in compiling a self guidedportfolio.Each student throughout the schoolyear is required to submit 24 pieces.These works are split into two groups:breadth and concentration. The breadthportfolio consists of 12 works that canbe anything the student chooses.Whileworking on their concentration eachstudent makes projects based on a cen-

tral theme or idea.AP Art student, Bella Lopez,com-

mented about her concentration. Lopezchose to center her concentrationaround the theme of domestic abuse.The talented junior reflects she,“chose to do it because I've had somefriend who have had some very per-sonal experiences with that. It means alot to me, I just wish it were somethingthat we talked about and an issue thatmore people payed attention to”.Lopez displays the contrast and im-pact that the abuser has, through color.In her work, Lopez usually shows theabuser in black and white, in stark con-trast to the victim who is shown in vi-brant color. Her work not only showsthe physical aspect of domestic abuse,but also the mental impact it can have.Through her work Lopez hopes toshow people and bring attention to theissue of domestic abuse.

While doing research for a video broad-cast, two journalism students went aroundColchester High School asking students andteachers what there favorite song is. Aftergetting answers, they then had students andteachers listen to each other's choices andcaptured their reactions. The reactionsmade for a funny video and showed whatteachers and a student’s thought of thesongs. It's interesting to hear what teachersand students favorite songs are because theyare totally different from each other beingthat the songs are from different generationsand genres.Starting with teachers, Ms. Hughes,

Mr.Brown,Mr. Phillips, and Ms. De-Laricheliere were interviewed. Mrs. Hughessaid that her favorite song was "Livin' On aPrayer" by Bon Jovi, because it made herfeel at home and it reminded her of goodtimes such as parties. Up next was Mr.Brown, who said anything by Barry Whitewas his favorite because he is the king ofsmooth jazz. Mr. Phillips favorite song is

"New Orleans is Sinking" by The TragicallyHip. Finally, Ms. DeLaricheliere said her fa-vorite song is "The Man in Me" by BobDylan because she can sing along to most ofhis songs. For students, Jace Laquerre, Kea-gan Landry, and Dylan Davison were inter-viewed. Jace’s favorite song is "SweetHomeAlabama". Keagan's, favorite song isa country song, "8th of November" by Bigand Rich. Lastly, Dylan’s favorite song is"Man of the Year" by Schoolboy Q.As expected, teachers and students have

favorite songs from their generations whichis why they differ so much. Dylan listenedto Mr.Philips song and he said, “It soundslike some aged music, I don’t know if I likethis.” After, Ms. DeLaricheliere listened toDylan’s song and she said, “It sounds likethe typical rap song.” Lastly, Mr.Philips lis-tened to Keagan’s song and he said, “I likesome country but I don’t listen to Big andRich.” The opinions were interesting to hearbecause they didn’t really like each other'ssongs. This was expected because it wasn'tthe music they normally listen to. It's goodto sample new music but you don't have tolike it.

All of the hard work paid off for ColchesterHigh School Theatre Company when theywrapped up their ongoing efforts with threeperformances of Beauty and the Beast for theirSpring show. What most people don't under-stand is the effort went into it. Auditions tookplace in early January, and for some it was thehardest part. Bella Lopez said, “the worst partof casting is that you want a specific part andso do your friends...the anticipation is horri-ble.”After casting was finalized, rehearsals forBeauty and the Beast began.Rehearsals are a major component of whatgoes on behind the scenes and generally lastfor two hours after school. Eliysia Way, an ac-tress in the play, thinks that the hardest part ofthe show is, “scheduling rehearsals and makingsure everyone is there”. Rehearsals aren't theonly time the cast puts in, many will go homeand continue to memorize their lines. Thesehours can add up, especially during “HellWeek”. This week can be extremely stressfulfrom making sure everything is in place to anylast minute changes in the production. NathalieStapleton thinks that “getting everyone on thesame page is the hardest part, everyone hastheir own opinions, and therefore there is ten-sion.”As with any show, Beauty and the Beast hasseveral props and sets. The Colchester TheatreCompany makes several of the props them-

selves, others they have to buy. Most sets arerented from companies, however certain partsmay have to be built by them. For Beauty andthe Beast set building took place the weekendbefore the first performance. Another impor-tant part of what goes on behind the scenes islighting and sound. Brooke Marcotte was oneof the technicians in charge of controlling thestage lights. One of her roles in rehearsals was

to create cues for the lights. Costumes are an-other major part of what happens behind thescenes. The clothes needed to fit and bechanged quickly throughout the show.Members of the Theatre Company, put copi-ous amount of effort into practicing and ensur-ing that everything was perfected beforeopening night, when Beauty and the Beast wasfinally revealed to an appreciative audience.

Dr. John O’Meara, a well-known and respected as-tronomer from St. Michael’sCollege will be donating histime to have an astronomytalk and star gazing night tosupplement the astronomyunit being taught in Physicsclasses.

Students, as well as familiesand community members, areall invited to this event.This isa really unique opportunityfor space enthusiasts of anylevel to enjoy an evening filledwith stars and celestial bodies.

The event takes place at 7:30p.m. in the CHS theater onThursday, May11.

Every year the Colch-ester School Districthas an Art Show to cel-ebrate the work of stu-dents. This year the ArtShow falls May 9th-12th.Art is displayed inthe CHS Gym, and isopen to all members ofthe community from8am-4pm each day. Theart that is displayed

ranges from kindergarten work toAPArt proj-ects. This allows members of the communityto see the progression in art as students age.

Anne Cummings is an art teacher atthe high school, and thinks the Art Show isimportant to a student's success. “Presentingart is an important part in creating it. And hav-ing family, friends, and community memberssee it is a great way for students to feel pridein their work. And it encourages them to goon in art.”

Every student at Colchester HighSchool who is taking part in an art class is re-

quired to put at least one piece in the showalong with an artist statement. Mr. Canniz-zaro, another art teacher thinks this is a great“opportunity to celebrate creative successes inall of our students.”

Within the Colchester School Dis-trict Art Show there are specialized section.One section showcases the work of currenthigh school seniors. Each senior who choosesto participate sets up work from all four yearsof their high school career. This is a great wayfor those who are passionate about their art-work to show their family and friends whatthey have created. Another section of the ArtShow is dedicated to AP Art students. OliviaPerron is a current senior who takes AP Art.She thinks “the Art Show is a great opportu-nity for parents to see all of the artwork doneby students. This year there should be evenmore great art work with all of theAPArt stu-dents having their own display.”

The Colchester School District ArtShow provides students with the opportunityto show the community the work they haveaccomplished this year. Many of the studentsare proud of their artwork, and are excitedwith the option to include it in the show.

As a senior at CHS that has a carpayment and insurance to pay, there’s no wayone could afford these luxuries if not workingas a fulltime CHS student and a part time PizzaHut employee. Sometimes it may be tough tobalance the two. Especially on days withschool in the morning, go class to class andthen go straight to work; it can get hectic.Not only do students go to school and work,they also have a third responsibility...home-work. So after some students get out of work aslate as nine, they have got an hour or so ofhomework afterward, as well.It is definitely a grind to keep up with school

and work. Many other students are in the sameboat. School during the day and work duringthe evenings.According to the Bureau of LaborStatistics, 41 percent of high school freshmenworked during the school year; or the follow-ing summer, compared to 65 percent of sopho-mores, 79 percent juniors, and 87 percentseniors that worked during the school year.My job description would be something likemake pizzas, prep dough and do dishes. Apretty fitting job for a high school student. I’dsay that I don’t mind my job, it’s nothingheadache inducing and it’s relatively lowstakes on messing up, it’s just a pizza in allhonesty.A fellow senior, IsabellAyer told me that she

also works at a pizza place, Three Brothers.She says “ Working in the food industry ishigh paced and nerve racking for the pay youmake, without lots of tips.”I agree with Ayer, working with food is veryfast paced and time sensitive, but it brings inthe much needed money for a high school stu-dent.

Dual enrollment is a program that allows aperson to be enrolled in two educational pro-grams at the same time. Students who take ad-vantage of this program have the opportunity tolearn something their high school may not offer,while experiencing a post secondary education.However, dual enrollment only applies to highschool juniors and seniors. In Vermont, juniorsand seniors are eligible for two vouchers, al-lowing them to take up to two classes with notuition costs. At Colchester High School there

are four colleges that students have the oppor-tunity to attend: University of Vermont, Cham-plain College, Community College of Vermont,and Vermont Technical College. The coursesthat high schoolers can enroll in vary dependingon the college they choose and the current se-mester.

Courtney Dessormeau is a currentsenior at Colchester High School. Earlier thisyear she enrolled in an online criminology classat the Community College of Vermont.Dessormeau decided to take part in the dual en-rollment program in the hopes that it wouldhelp her choose a career path. During an inter-view she stated that the college course differed

from high school. “There was a lot more work.And there was no wiggle room to hand in latework. The deadline was the deadline.” Overall,she did not enjoy this experience because shecouldn't talk to her teacher in person making ithard to communicate what needed to be done.Despite not having a great experience in thedual enrollment program, Dessormeau said thatshe would recommend the criminology course.

Rachel Gervais is another studentwho took part in the dual enrollment program.She enrolled in a medical terminology courseat the University of Vermont. Gervais chose toenroll because she wanted to explore the biol-ogy and medicine. Unlike Dessormeau, Gervais

enjoyed her experience, especially learning ather own pace. One major difference Gervaisnoted between the college course and her highschool classes was that there is a lot more re-sponsibility given to the student. “The teachersdon't send out reminders to turn in your work,you have to keep track of it yourself.”

Dual enrollment provides students inhigh school with a new experience. The expe-riences that students have all depends on whatcourse they take and at what school. BothDessormeau and Gervais agreed that the dualenrollment program is a great way to exploreareas of interest.

Clément Soler-My is a French exchange stu-dent, who is completing his junior year of highschool at Colchester. Soler-My is from a towncalled Troyes, in North-East France, which isabout 2 hours away from Paris.When asked what his favorite experience was,

he responded, “The culture difference, I like tolearn about new cultures and being alone, awayfrom your family makes you discover a lot ofthings, but the first thing you discover is your-self. Also you learn how to deal with stuff andface life. It is a learning experience for yourself,and also for a new language.”Soler-My's biggest change from living in

France to living in the United states is school.He says that school in the U.S. is less stressfuland you have more free time as well as support.Also, the school spirit here is a lot different fromhome. At his school in France, there are nosports, so Soler-My values the school spirit, andsports we offer. He enjoyed playing football inthe beginning of the year, and loved being apartof his volleyball team this winter.The reason why Soler-My wanted to be an ex-

change student was to discover and learn abouthimself, so he came to Vermont to experiencedifferent things to make himself grow, whilechallenging the way he thinks.He understands that being bilingual looks

good for colleges, so coming to Vermont wouldhelp him strengthen his English, and so far sogood.After high school, Soler-My wants to go to an

international college with a variety of nationali-ties, and it's important to him that he studiesabroad to continue experiencing new things.He understands that many people find it in-

timidating to study abroad, but still encouragesit, saying “If you hesitate to go abroad becauseyou are scared of being lonely, not understood,or having a bad experience, I will say just do it.You will not regret it, and if you don't go youwill never know. Life is short and you shouldjust live the present and not the future. Even ifyou feel lonely during the experience, you’lllearn more. If you don’t have struggle, you willnever have growth. The best way to learn is tomake mistakes, and you’ll take away a lot fromthe experience even if you're not aware of it.You’ll come back as a different person in a bet-ter way.”Soler-My wishes to stay for summer even

though he must return to France. Going backhome seems more like going back to high schoolwhere his schoolwork awaits him. He also likesthe people here and it will be bittersweet to saygoodbye. However, he doesn't think about leav-ing because he wants to make the most of his ex-perience while he’s living in it. Soler-My'sphilosophy is to always live in the present.

Recently students at CHS were askedwhich social media app they like the most,and why they like it. In a detailed survey,two particular visual apps came out on top.38% of students picked Snapchat as their fa-vorite app, and 28% chose Instagram. Noother app came close, with Facebook fin-ishing a very distant 3rd. Other apps men-tioned wereTwitter,Reddit,YouTube, iFunny,Tumblr, and Pinterest.

Colchester High School has introduced anew system of grading. This new policyseparates the grades for studentachievement from the grades for studentdispositions. Students now receive gradesfor their organization, commitment, selfregulation, and persistence. The gradesrange from 1-4, 4 being exceedingexpectations. The purpose of this is to gradestudents based on what they actually know,not on whether they can turn a paper in ontime.This new policy gives students the

opportunity to retake assessments and turnin work late without a deduction. Theability to retest is included in this newpolicy because the CHS administrationbelieves that students should be givenmultiple opportunities to demonstrate theirlearning.Teachers are allowed to set the guidelines

for retesting and revising. For example, inAdvanced Placement Calculus students arenot allowed to revise unit tests, but inAdvanced Placement Biology students aregiven the opportunity to revise unit tests.Students are allowed to turn in work pastthe due date, but not past the deadline.Work turned in past the due date is acceptedand the student will not receive a penalty.This is because the purpose of grading isreflect a student’s knowledge of the topic. Ifa student turns assignments in late this isreflected in their learn score. Students arenot allowed to turn in work late past thedeadline. The deadline is set by the teacherand can be based upon course guidelines orschool related timeline.Another portion of this new grading

policy is that teachers are no longer able to

give extra credit. This is because extracredit or bonus points do not measure astudent’s learning. Now that students canretake and revise, it is no longer necessaryfor teachers to provide an extra cushion toa student’s grade with extra credit. Multipleopportunities are provided to improve one’sgrades.The new grading policy is affecting

students at CHS differently. Some studentslove the opportunity to turn in work late,while others believe that it isn’t preparingthem for the strict deadlines in college. Thepolicy is helpful to students who have abusy night and have no time to get theirhomework done, but it has made it much

easier for students to procrastinate. By theend of the quarter many have long lists ofthings to do prior to the quicklyapproaching deadline.Incorporating learning habits into grading

has both positives and negatives. Studentsare now graded on what they actually know,not on whether they can turn assignmentsin on time. Retakes give students anotherchance to prove to teachers that theyunderstand the learning targets. Thedownside is that procrastinators are gettingfurther and further behind. This school yearis the first year that learning habits gradesare on report card. This indicates that, fornow, learning habits are here to stay.

For anybody interested in hip hop,it's worth checking out Travi$ Scott and hisprogression throughout his projects. Scottis he is a 24 year old Houston, Texas native.He makes Hip Hop/Rap music and has evenproduced for some big names such asKanye, Big Sean, and Drake. He started outjust producing beats, then gradually startedto hone his lyrical skills at the age of 16 anddropped his debut mixtape. In 2012 Scottsigned a record deal with Epic Records andG.O.O.DMusic to be an in-house producer.

Scott’s first solo mixtape was OwlPharaoh. This mixtape really put him on themap. A song that really stands out on thismixtape is "upper echelon" because of thesheer hype of the song and some of theartists featured within the song, like T.I. and2 Chainz, which are pretty substantialfeatures to have on your first mixtape. Scottwas the executive producer, meaning all thefinishing touches and mixing were handledthrough him. The tape featured otherproducers but Scott had the biggestinfluence, an impressive thing seeing how itwas his first tape. Many rappers todaybarely even write their own lyrics, nevermind them even trying to produce a beat.Scott’s next tape was long awaited after hisfirst one since it did very well. Days before

Rodeo is Scott’s sophomore mixtape andpeople were really hyped when this albumcame out. On this mixtape he really wantedto showcase that not only can he producebeats, but he can rap over them as well. Thismixtape had pretty impressive features aswell such as songs like "Mamacita",featuring Young Thug and Rich HomieQuan. It was definitely a success.Scott’s next move was to release his first

official album, Rodeo. All of the tracks onRodeo flow together really well and thewhole album follows a kind of theme ofdesert, sand, and cacti; something to beexpect from a rapper from Houston. All ofthe production on this album was perfectand represents all of the time and effort thatwas put in for this project. Continuting acommon theme in Scott’s previous projects,Rodeo features really good listings.Examples are “Ok Alright”, featuringSchoolBoy Q, and “3500” featuring 2Chainz and Future.Scott’s latest project, Birds in the Trap

Sing McKnight, is easily his most hypedrelease to date. Over the progression of hisalbums he has built a pretty large fanbaseand performs shows for hundreds ofthousands of people. The songs on thisalbum are definitely more radio friendlythan his earlier tapes. Travis has a bit of ahistory with having some dark influences inhis music and having deep dirty sub bass,but on this project he went for a lighter,happier kind of album. You can hear it in

theproduction and in the lyrics aswell. He was definitely tryingto please and reach out towider audience with thisalbum. It worked, andwhile many enjoy thisalbum, fans can still lookforward to the next phase in Travi$ Scott'sevolution.

Growing up, I always admired vegetar-ians but never thought I could be oneclaiming ;“I love bacon too much”. Now,a junior in high school, I’ve been one fora little over a year and have never feltbetter. Not only are there health bene-fits of cutting down on the consumptionof meat, but the moral and environmen-tal benefits are astounding.

Whether it is conscious ornot, there aremany implica-tions of eatingmeat. I under-stand that noteveryone nec-essarily feels theway that I feelabout it, butthey havealways botheredme. Many peo-ple areunaware, orturn their headsto the terribletreatment ofanimals whilethey are held.The mass pro-duction foodindustry espe-cially, takes littleto no account

for the animals they plan on consuming.In addition, the meat industry accountsfor a large percentage of greenhousegases that are incredibly harmful to theenvironment and lessening the demandfor that is helpful in keeping the planethealthy.

How food gets on a plate isimportant, but so is the quality andnutrition of the food.A big criticism I’vealways gotten is about protein. Manyseem to be under the misconceptionthat meat is the only main source ofprotein, however that is just not thecase.Dairy, if one choose to eat it, has a

decent amount of protein, that com-bined with things like lentils, beans,quinoa, nuts, etc. make it more thanmanageable. It does take a little effort tobe a healthy vegetarian and have a bal-

anced diet, but can be done and getseasier as one goes.For vegetarians at CHS, there are

more options than one might think. Inthe lunch line, there are veggie burgers,vegetarian sandwiches, endless fruits andvegetables, the salad bar which also hastofu, and the infamous pizza day.There isplenty to sustain vegetarian students;however, there could always be morevariety.Food Service Director and health

advocate, Steve Davis explains that thereason there isn’t more options isbecause there is “not enough demand”.Since the food service can only buy in

bulk, there needs to be demand for thefood or else it is a waste of money.Davissays all it would take is five vegetarians aday in order for it to be economical.In addition, suggesting something

along the lines of a community or club

that come together would help establishcredibility and make it easier to supplymore options. If there was an assuredsource of income, there is even roomfor an all separate vegetarian menu aslong as there is commitment to it. Theproblem is that there is more demandthan one would think, however, peoplejust aren’t coming forward and express-ing it.Davis’ advice for vegetarians and non

meat eaters is to come together and tocollaborate with him and the food serv-ice. He explains the issue that “kidsdon't come and talk” and express theirconcerns and rather just bring lunch.Davis would be more than happy tocater to all of our non meat eatingneeds, and the club wouldn’t have to bea huge commitment, just a place to talkand move the lunch program forward.

Mrs. Cohen, a humanities teacher,has been given the opportunity of alifetime. Next year, she will be travel-ling around Norway teaching studentsand teachers about aspects ofAmerican culture and education.As aRoving Scholar in American Studies,Mrs. Cohen will be given the chanceto interact with students from overone hundred schools.

The application requiredMrs. Cohen to write a personal state-ment and design twelve workshopproposals. Some of the workshopsshe has proposed are the AmericanNational Parks System, the CivilRights Movement, the AmericanDream, and the 2016 election. TheAmerican Dream workshop is verysimilar to what students study in 10thGrade American Experience. The2016 election workshop is focused onthe political revolution started byBernie Sanders. Mrs. Cohen believesthat this one will be of interest toNorwegians

The opportunity to chal-

lenge herself in so many ways is what’smotivating Mrs. Cohen to take on thisexperience. She is excited by the pos-sibility of having her ideas challenged.

“I can’t wait to have myassumptions about what good educa-tion is challenged a little. It’ll push meto reconsider what it looks like to bea good teacher and what it looks liketo be a good global citizen.That’ll justmake me a more well rounded per-son. That’s the ultimate goal, to learnsomething about yourself and aboutthe world through every experiencethat you seek.”

Four or five days a weekMrs. Cohen will be visiting schools.On the days she’s not teaching, Mrs.Cohen is looking forward to explor-ing the unique landscape of Norway.She hopes to take full advantage ofher European experience and is espe-cially excited about Norway being thebirthplace of skiing. Mrs. Cohen hopesto see how Norwegian values andappreciation of nature show up intheir education.

Mrs. Cohen’s most valuableexperiences during this trip will be inthe many classrooms across Norway.Her main personal research objectiveis to learn how Norwegian high

schools are meeting all of their stu-dents’ needs through personalizedlearning. This is information she canbring back to CHS to help both stu-dents and teachers. Norway has awide range of school settings. Someschools are located in big cities andare very large, while others are locat-ed in very rural areas and are quitesmall. This is exciting to Mrs. Cohenbecause she’ll get to see how teachersprovide high quality education in avariety of school settings.

One aspect of the trip thatMrs. Cohen is especially excited for isbeing able to answer the questions ofNorwegian students have about whatit’s like to be teenager and a studentin the United States. She hopes to beable to connect Norwegian studentsand CHS students via Skype.

While there are manyexciting things about this experience,Mrs. Cohen says that she is going tomiss the ability to form relationshipswith student and faculty.

“The hardest part aboutthis job is going to be that I’m in andout of schools in one day. I won’t haveany relationships with kids or facultymembers at schools for an entire yearand that’s going to be really hard.”

Mrs. Cohen knows not hav-ing relationships with students andfaculty will be a challenge, but she’swilling to step out of her comfortzone to better herself as a teacher.

Mrs. Cohen is very excited to take in all the newexperience Norway will have to offer.

As a child, we are often hidden from theworld. We appreciate the fact that werarely hear about the bad things in life. Iwas this way as well, for as long as I canremember.The thought of conflict was justa figment of my imagination. Growing up, itdidn’t seem to affect me or anyone that Iknew to any measurable extent.

In 1789, our US Constitutionwas ratified, and in 1791, our first tenamendments as well. The fundamentals ofour nation established hundreds of yearsago called for all of us to pay our taxes, andby 1920 for every citizen to vote. However,in this nation, with its complex issues, ourresponsibilities as citizens go much furtherthan this.One winter day, my legion baseball team

and I took a trip to a local veterans hospi-tal, to hand out gifts to our veterans duringthe holiday season.Most of these particularveterans served in ColdWar proxy wars ofVietnam and Korea. We walked around,from one beige painted room to the next,and I heard many stories of lost friends andlost families; all things I would have consid-ered terrible in my own life. It dawned onme I didn’t know a thing about these con-flicts these veterans had fought in. Not abattle, not a date.I wonder how much different that day

would have gone if I had known just a littlebit about our nation’s history. I wonderhow much more thoughtful my responseswould've been when that Vietnam veteranhad been telling me about the fall of Saigon;but at the time, I had no idea what hemeant. I had no idea what his fellowmarines had died for in that war. I had noidea where Vietnam even was. That day,those men looked to us, the youth, as peo-ple to open up to and talk to, and to try andbetter understand why they had gonethrough what they went through; and westared back with blank faces. Looking back,that was unacceptable.Twenty two service-men a day are said to be taking their ownlives for PTSD; and most of us could noteven tell you why.We live in a complex world, with com-

plex issues, and as an American, it is myduty to understand the world we live in tothe best of my ability. I realized that day atthat hospital, and every day thereafter, thatmy responsibility to America was not tocrave the ignorance, but to combat it.I understand that ignorance is bliss to

many of the people in this great nation. It’s

often much easier to hide from the truththan to face it. However, we are all “Epluribus unum”; out of many, one. In orderto live up to this motto, we must all under-stand as much as we can about this coun-try. No matter our ethnicity, our child-hood, or our past, we must all do our bestto form opinions based on facts andresearch. It is not always our opinions thatdivide us; rather, it is often the harsh biaseswe create.With this, our nation was based on

diversity; diversity of ideas, of religion, andvalues. Our country’s fight is not solelyagainst religion, bias, guns, or gender. In1620, Pilgrims came toAmerica in search ofreligious freedom. In the 1980s, Reaganstated,“Gorbachev, tear down this wall,” tohelp those unlike each other to coexistonce again, as they once had. Unfortunately,these diversities scare us. My responsibilityto America is to do my best to embraceour differences.To invite those who are notlike the majority, instead of turning themaway. We spent years as a country strug-gling, and Lincoln’s words, “our fathersbrought forth on this continent, a newnation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicatedto the proposition that all men are createdequal,” should not be ignored. We havearguably continued to forget this fact, and itis my responsibility, as well as those whogrow up with me, to keep this messagealive. It is my responsibility to put aside theminiscule distinctions between me and oth-ers. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, wemust all truly judge people not by the colorof their skin, but by the content of theircharacter.My responsibility toAmerica will help me

make sensible decisions about the words Ichose, the actions I take, and help mecleanse myself of my prejudices as best as Ican, as we all should. We all must under-stand the world we live, and understandthat diversity helps us grow, and shouldnever be feared. We must educate our-selves on our history to better understandthose who saw it happen, and better under-stand the lessons of the past, to apply themto our lives today. John F. Colchester High School hosts anintramural volleyball tournamenteach year. Students and faculty areencouraged to create their ownteams and design their own uni-forms. This tournament has beengoing for 11 years and is organizedby CHS humanities teacher Mr.Mc-Cannell.It originated

from a student'sSenior Seminarproject on theimportance ofi n t r a m u r a lsports and extracurricular activi-ties in a school.McCannell fig-ured they wouldattempt to addan intramural option to the list ofCHS athletics, and volleyball wasthe student's number one choice,followed by ultimate frisbee andwiffleball.The first tournament hadjust 9 teams but the popularity ofthe annual event soared, 30 teamswere involved the third year.This year over 200 members of

the CHS community participatedspread across 28 teams. Many ofthe participants were filled withdisappointment after 2 days andover 20 total games were cancelleddue to the back to back snow dayson March 14th and 15th. Thesegames were the last games of the

regular season and could have de-termined the playoff seeding. But,the games could not be made upand the regular season was cutshort.The playoffs took place on the

next day and ended with an excit-ing championship finish. Seniorteam “Buckets and Booms” de-feated junior team“The NotoriousD.I.G.” in the final game of thetournament. Buckets and Booms

consisted of 7 sen-iors; Ben Turner,Charlie Powell,Jordan Bell,Thomas Meadows,Shane Grant, JoeyGiroux, and MattHesford. The sen-iors went out on ahigh note, finishingtheir high schoolvolleyball careers

with a championship.“Playing with your friends and

being able to make your own team,it’s fun” , Shane Grant of Bucketsand Booms said.Grant was not the only one who

felt this way, if anyone is asked whohas participated in the tournament,this is what the majority of themenjoyed about it. The option tocompete against classmates andteachers, create your own teamname and design a uniform is highlyanticipated amongst the commu-nity.

Everyone hates running into people in the hall-way. No matter where you’re going in this schoolthere is always that person that is on their phonenot paying attention just waiting to run intosomeone. And in betweenclasses people seem towander to the wrong side ofthe hall where they almostalways get taken out. It’stime to stop. This age ofmindless wanderers has tocome to an end.Things can be done to put

an end to the tyranny. Forexample texting lanescould be added in theschool similar to what UtahValley University did.These texting lanes are de-signed for people who areconstantly glued to theirphones and not paying at-tention. This provides aspace for them to travelwithout holding up peopleand or hurting people. The only problem withthis idea is that our hallways at CHS are not verybig. Adding an extra lane to our hallways wouldmake them feel very cramped and leave very lit-tle room.

Another big problem with the school hallwaysis kids leaving class to roam around.Mr. Ellingson, a long time employee at CHS

says that it is the teacher's fault for for giving stu-dents too much freedom during class. “Morefreedom allows for more time in the hallwaymaking it more of a place to socialize rather than

get to class.”This freedom allows

kids to use the hallwayas a lounge. Basicallyevery hallway you walkdown there are kidsstanding on the wall,sitting on the floor, oreven laying in the mid-dle of the hallway.“WhenATwas first cre-ated, the restricted hall-ways during that periodworked well at first, butthen it kind of lost itsteeth.” Ellingson says.AT is the thirty

minute block between1st mod and 2nd mod.The hallway restric-tions were meant tokeep students in the

room for special announcements and news. Sincethen that “rule” has been basically forgotten. Un-less this rule is enforced, tripping over studentsin the hallway will continue to be a regular thing.

Car culture is based around modifying cars towhat the owner wants. Some people see cars as justa form of transportation, but other people see it asso much more than that. People have an interest inmodifying their cars because there are so manythings that one can personalize. It’s hard to explainwhy people do it, people just do it because it’s funand interesting.There are countless things that can be done to a

car ranging from different wheels, exhaust, engineparts, body modifications, suspension, interior,sound, engine swaps, and so on. People typicallyput their cars in categories based on their builds.For example, daily car, street car, drift car, drag car,stance car, off road, show car, and track cars are allexamples of what people modify their cars to be.Car culture has been around since the 1950’s and

seen a lot today being many different types of cargroups and modifications.There were many innovations in design and

safety and the 50's gave birth to many highlyprized classic cars. Ever since the 50’s, car culturecontinued and is growing more and more.Today, we see many different types of classic

and modified, cars from different countries such asAmerica, Japan, Germany, Australia, and so on.Car culture has changed society in many positiveways being that they can serve as a form of trans-portation, but also can be a form entertainment formany.The majority of upper classmen at CHS drive

and own a personal car. Car culture does play a role

at CHS from a handful of student car owners.For example, senior Will Holmes has a Volk-

swagen Jetta with a custom exhaust consisting of adown pipe and a straight pipe. Senior Luke Sheri-dan has a Ford F-150 with an aftermarket exhaustand aftermarket wheels and tires. My personal caris a Subaru Impreza with aftermarket headers, cus-tom exhaust and other small modifications such asmud flaps, fog lights and seats. There is a varietyof different cars seen at CHS some being modifiedcars,trucks or just your everyday car.

Students in Mr. Price’s InternationalPolitics/UN classes had two US sol-diers- one who is still serving and oneUS veteran - visit classes again inMarch.

Staff Sgt. Shawn Forbes a currentUSArmy Soldier from California whoparticipated in two tours of duty toIraq (2004-2005 & 2007-2006) andone tour of duty to Afghanistan in2010, spoke to the classes about hisexperiances from his enlistmentthrough his time is Falluja and then

Mosul in Northern Iraq, Baghdad andAfghanistan. It was a powerful andcomplicated learning experience forthe students.

Sgt. Gary Jackson, a US veteranfrom Colchester, Vermont was alsoable to visit one of the classes. Sgt.Jackson- who served in the militaryfrom the late 1980’s through the Per-sian GulfWar 1990-1991, who earneda Purple Heart for our country duringthe US - Iraq conflict in 2004 spoke.He has visited CHS in previous years,and according to Price, "We were hon-ored to host him again and look for-ward to having him come back soon.".

The fourth annualVariety Night was an exciting one. For this year's 20-25 minuteskits, the theme was Elvis.The prop requirements were a rainbow clown wig and a broom.The lines actors

had to say were “These pretzels are making me thirsty.” and “You ain’t no friend ofmine.”.There were an array of awards including, 1st place, 2nd place, Best Dance, Best

Actor,BestTechnical Design.There were also Judges Choice awards and a Producer'sChoice award.For a second year in a row the juniors, class of 2018, took home first place.They

also received Best Dance, Best Actor (Jacob Dell), and Best Technical Design.Withtheir special addition of a pit band they were able to receive one of the Judges'Choice awards.The seniors, class of 2017, were the runners up this year receiving second place

also with a Judges' Choice award for Nathalie Stapleton's as the narrator and theProducers Choice (Sawyer Loftus and Matt Lachance).The best Elvis of them all went to the sophomore class with Dylan Roberge who

was able to not only look like Elvis, but sound and act like him, also.Overall, variety night was a huge success.The Masters of Ceremony this year were

Mr. Dean, Mr. Scheuch, Mr.McClintock, and Ms.deLaricheliere.
