In presenting these family records, the author wishes to express

her thanks and appreciation to those who have helped in collecting

the material.

Mrs. Gertrude Wait Bisbee (#305) supplied a record of the

descendants of Nathaniel Howes (#4) with the exception of those

descended from William Almerin Howes (#19). Almus Reed

Speare (#232) listed the descendants of Mary Howes (#8), and

George W. Brown (#173) the descendants of Lucretia Howes

(#6). Much data of the descendants of Anne Howes (#9) has

been secured from letters of Emory Benjamin Willett (#137). To

these and to all who, by answering my letters of inquiry have con¬

tributed to these records, I extend my sincere thanks.

It is to be regretted that so many letters have not been

answered, else these records would have been more complete.

cTake 3~Cowes (5Howse) family

There were three brothers in Montgomery County, Maryland,

Captain Edward Howse who died 3-8-1828, James Howse who

was living in 1808, and witnessed his brother John s will, and John

Howse, some of whose descendants are herein recorded. (There

was also a sister, Sarah Howse, who married Charles Alexander

Warfield).

Following is a copy of the will of John Howse, who died

between November, 1808, and March, 1809.

John Howse of Montgomery County, 8 November 1808

— proved 23 March, 1809 .I bequeath &c . . .

To my wife Mary Howse until my son Rubin shall fully

accomplish his twenty-first year of age I give and be¬

queath the use possessions and profits of my dwelling

plantation being part of a tract called Addition to Brook

Grove, part of Fair Hill on the resurvey on Brooke Park

and part of Piney Grove containing 39114 acres together

with all my negroes stock of every kind plantation

utensils household furniture and every other article of

personal property belonging or attached to my said

dwelling plantation.

Item: To my son John Howse untill my said son

Rubin shall accomplish his twenty-first year of age I

give and devise the use possession and profits of all my

land called and known by the name of part of a tract

called Rays Adventure.

To my son in law Charles Davis until my said son

! Rubin shall accomplish his twenty-first year of age where

he the said Charles Davis now resides, and after my said

son Rubin shall so accomplish and then I will and direct

that my estate shall be divided in the following manner.

To my wife Mary Hows her right of dower or one

third part and all the residue of my estate to be divided

between my children and grand children here in after

named in the manner following that is to say:

To son Nathaniel one ninth part,

To son Richard one ninth part

To son Reuben one ninth part

To my daughter Loradea the wife of Charles Davis

one ninth part

To my daughter Lucretia Penn the wife of Roby

Penn one ninth part

To my daughter Mary Hows one ninth part

To my daughter Ann Hows one ninth part

To my grand children Matilda and Perry Bowman

one ninth part to each of them and to their heirs

respectively,

and in case my wife should die before my said son

Reubin should accomplish twenty one years as

aforesaid then I will and direct my whole estate to

be divided among my children and grand children

as above willed

and in case son Reubin should die before he should

accomplish his twenty-first year then I will and

devise the property should remain as above willed

until the period at which said son Reubin would

have arrived at the age of twenty one years.

I appoint my brother Edward Hows Executor with full

power to settle all my business which I may leave un¬

settled in the same manner as I myself could do in my

lifetime.

That John Howse was living in Montgomery County, Mary¬

land in 1 778 is shown by the certified copy of his “Oath of Fidel¬

ity and Support to the State of Maryland” which is here given.

Mr. Richard Thompson delivers to the Court here a List

of the Persons names who have taken repeated and

subscribed the Oath of Fidelity and Support to the State

of Maryland and is as follows, to wit:

“I, A B, do swear that 1 do not hold myself bound

to yield any allegiance or obedience to the King of

Great Britain his heirs or successors and that 1 will be

true and faithful to the State of Maryland and will to

the utmost of my power support maintain and defend

the freedom and Independence thereof and the Govern¬

ment as now Established against all open Enemies and

secret and Traiterous Conspiracies and will use my

utmost Endeavors to disclose and make known to the

Governor or some one of the Judges or Justices thereof

all Treasons or Traiterous Conspiracies Attempts or Com¬

binations against this State or the Government thereof

which may come to my knowledge, so help me God”

(Jirst generation

1. John1 Howes b. after 1740, m. Mary -, and d. be¬

tween November, 1 808 and March 1809. He is buried

in Laytonsville, Maryland with his mother, his brother

James, and daughter Sarah. About a year after his death

his widow, Mary, went to Bucks County, Kentucky.

Children:

Smith. It is said that John remained on his father s

plantation until his brother Reuben came of age in 1816.

After the estate was settled according to the father s will

he moved to Kentucky.

10-4-1803 Elizabeth Berry, b. 1780, d. 5-19-1851. Both

buried in Blossom Cemetery, Hamlin, N. Y.

12-29-1802. They had fifteen children, thirteen of

whom lived to maturity. One of these was the

above mentioned Roby Penn.

10. Reuben2 Howes (John1), b. 10-6-1795, d. 1868. Reuben

married several times, but the names of his wives are not

known. It is said he had 23 children. What is known

of Reuben is from letters written by him to relatives and

friends. Below is what is known of his children.

Children:

52. Andrew Jackson3 Howes, eldest son of second wife, went

to California in the “Gold Rush”.

53. Stephen H.3 Howes, went to California with his brother,

Andrew J., but returned 8-20-185 7.

54. Mary Elizabeth3 Howes, the oldest daughter, m. -

Orender, lived Marysville, Cal.

55. Martin V.3 Howes.

56. Reuben Riley3 Howes, b. 1841.

57. Preston Hall3 Howes, b. 1845.

Between #54 and #55 Reuben claimed he had nine

children in Hancock Co. Illinois, and three children lived

in Kentucky, no names given.

Reuben says in one letter dated “Laytonsville, Montgomery

Co. Maryland, June 1, 1864”, — “I am writing in the house

I took my first wife out of. Monday I was on the farm where

I was born.I visited the graveyard where my father,

sister, grandmother Howes, and Uncle James are buried.”

It is from this letter that we know where John Howes and

some members of his family are buried.
