Sports Talks : National game isbecoming a matter of national shame

Cricket is like aBanyan tree and otherforms of sports andindividual eventssuffer underit. One morething is thebig cricketevents takeplacethroughoutthe yearwhen stu-dents mustbe busy withtheir studies, with theeffect theirperformancesuffers. Buthockey islosing itsshine because of highhierarchy IndianHockey is sufferingfrom the grass rootlevel and now it isreached to the highestlevel also. Hockeyhierarchy proved thatwe are not up to theInternational leveland good only toblame the coaches forthe dismal show oreven good show.

The national gameof Hockey is sufferingat the hands of greedyofficials and overhyped player. WhenEuropean countrieshave learnt the finerpoints of the game, the players andAssociation are lockedin a bitter fight that islikely to spoil India’schances at the Inter-national level.

In a country, where the game ofcricket is given undueimportance the gameof hockey is totallyneglected. We witnesshow hockey is shabbi-ly treated in India inthe last two decades orso. But it was not soeasier. In 1928, theteam won its firstOlympic gold medaland until 1956, the

Indian men’s teamremained in theOlympics, winning sixgold medal in a row.In all, the Indianhockey team woneight gold medals-thehighest among allnational teams.

We had legendaryplayers like DhyanChand, who broughthonour for the coun-try. He was widely

regarded as thegreatest players of alltime. A legendarycenter-forwards, he isremembered for hisgoal scoring feats, both as a player andlater as a captain.Chand won threeOlympic gold medalsand was awarded thePadma Bhushan.India’s third highestcivilian honour, in1956.

Now to resolvevarious issues acommittee has beenset up to look intovarious aspects of thegame. Where is themoney given bysponsors gone. Wechange the sponsorsin greed of money andit does not reach theright place for improv-ing the standard ofthe game. The gamehas gone to the dogs.So the national sporthas become nationalshame. Players knowthat the momentum iswith them and theofficials have nooption. We have seenenough of hockeyfiasco in the last twodecades.

August 29, DhyanChand’s birthday is

celebrated as anational sports day inIndia. The Presidentof India gives awaysports awards such asthe Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna, Arjuna Awardand DronacharyaAward on this day atthe RashtrapathiBhawan. We must notmerely resort to suchtokenism, but admin-istrators and players

must work together torestore glorious daysof hockey. Hockeyhierarchy proved thatwe are not up to theInternational leveland good only toblame the coaches forthe dismal show oreven good show.National game isbecoming a matter ofnational shame.

Dhole, Scientist C, Vehicle Certification Safety &Homologation Division, CIRT, and Kalpana Dwive-di, Principal St. Joseph CBSE, Panvel among oth-ers. They spoke about the opportunities in runningschool buses as against challenges. One of the keyconcern is safety and everyone needs to treat it likea state of mind more than just a gadget on thevehicle. The authorities have introduced guidelinesto ensure children’s safety, the buses must be fit-ted with features like Panic Button, Tracking Sys-tem and cameras that can be monitored. AIS143 isan eye opener, which will increase safety howeverthis will increase initial cost.

'YUVA BOCI' was one of the most sought-aftersessions in this edition of Prawaas. The sessionencompassed the spirit of BOCI in the next genmobility solutions. The new age entrepreneursworking towards easing commuters pain and solv-ing day to day problems that would help take thepublic transport to the next level. Host of startupspresented out of box solutions on Accessibility andInclusivity, Sustainability and Carbon Footprint,e-mobility solutions and use of innovative technol-ogy such as IoT in transport.

The session on 'Public Private Partnership inDelivering Bus Transport' was chaired by SK Lo-hia, Managing Director, IRSDCL. The panelistsincluded Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officerand

Director of Customer Experience, Transport forLondon, Gerard Ollivier, Lead Transport Special-

ist, The World Bank, Shivanand Swamy, Execu-tive Director, Centre of Excellence in Urban Trans-port, Research & Development Foundation amongothers. The audience were in rapt attention whilethe panelist discussed the important roles Govern-ment, OEMs and Operators and aggregators playin forming an ecosystem for seamless passengerconnectivity and mobility.

“The most effective cities in urban mobility likeSingapore, Paris or Hong Kong, leverage buses for30 to 54 percent of their public transport trips, as acore component of their mobility system,” mentionsGerald Ollivier, Lead Transport Specialist for theWorld Bank. “They design services that are fre-quent, reliable, simple to understand, service alland are cost effective like in London. With backingof clear laws at state or local level, clear planningand funding responsibility can be established, likein Lyon with the use of a metropolitan level agen-cy, Systral. Since fare-based revenues typically onlycover part of bus operating costs, their authoritiesneed to create non-fare based revenues and subsi-dies to supplement those, reflecting the positiveimpact of bus services on overall mobility. For In-dia, such experience can be helpful in upgradingurban bus services by combining a clear vision formobility backed by law, institutions with clear plan-ning, funding and performance monitoring respon-sibilities, and balanced contracting with privateoperators backed by secured funding and key per-formance indicators monitored through IT sys-tems.”

One of the topical issues on 'Shared mobility: Agame changer or trouble maker?' was chaired by

Shreya Gadepalli, Director South Asia, ITDP andthe panel included Ashish Kumar Singh (IAS) Prin-cipal Secretary, Transport & Ports, Maharashtra,Ramnath Subramaniam, Executive Director, MahaMetro Rail Ltd and Iravati Damle, Head PublicPolicy, Uber among others. The panel discussedvarious aspects of shared mobility. The panel point-ed that shared mobility is the ultimate solution toincreasing congestion and pollution in our citiestoday. The policy needs to address taxation in away that shared mobility is economical and afford-able thereby reducing the need for personal vehi-cles. Good infrastructure and safety are also someof the key concerns that become prohibitive toshared mobility.

The session on 'Role of mobility in promotingtourism' was chaired by Kanwarjit Singh Sawh-ney, Managing Director, Bakshi Transport Service(P) Limited and Radhakrishna Holla, Chief Exec-utive Officer, Cauvery Cars, Bengaluru. The panelincluded Abhimanyu R. Kale, Managing DirectorMaharashtra Tourism Development CorporationLtd and Jenu Devan, IAS, Managing Director &Commissioner of Tourism, Tourism Corporation ofGujarat Ltd. The panel iterated that mobility playsa crucial role in tourism promotion. In a countrylike ours, which is richly endowed with culture andheritage, tourism has largely under performed dueto inadequate connectivity. Ensuring safe and se-cure transport would positively impact tourism bothfrom within the country as well as foreign tour-ists. The government and private operators mustcome together to make tourism viable through bet-ter mobility options.

Stop that suicidal tendencyThere’s a gruesome new fashion taking root

in our society today. High-tech suicide. And justas a model would walk the ramp showing off aswirling dress, someone shows off taking theirown lives on camera, for the world to see.

In fact, the recent spate of suicides is the offshoot of failure to understand the concept ofsimple living and high thinking. Youth today, tend to compare themselves with others andfeel inferior when they don’t match up to theirpeers. Only if they understood that by compar-ing them to others, they are being highly un-fair to themselves because they are limitingtheir capability to that of their peers.

Today, we tend to confuse simple living withlack of ambition. If we see someone leading asimple life, the general tendency is to assumethat the person lacks the fire-power needed tolead a successful life. What we need to under-stand is that such a person is at peace withhimself. And when you’re in peace, you’re suc-cessful in your own right. Talking about therecent spate suicides all over the country weanalyse the following:-

Depression is a state of low mood and aver-sion to activity. Stop depression by listening tomusic, play few boards of carom to reduce ten-sion and try your hand Table Tennis for somephysical movement. Anxiety, tension, broken-ness, conditional love, death, dejection, empti-ness, insignificance. guilt, hopelessness, illness, falsehood and a sense of shame on failure ordue to shameless act by colleagues creates sui-cidal tendency. The very essence of the valueof life is explained in Bhagwat Gita in a verysimple and common language.

The present generation refuse to acceptthese norms and end up in taking drastic steps. If only if they understand this simple languageas they are used to only SMS and contractedlanguage. Bill Gates has said that if you com-pare yourself with others then it is an insult toyourself.

Depression is a strong mood involving sad-ness, loneliness, discouragement, despair orhopelessness that lasts for weeks, months orever for a longer period creates the guilty feel-ings. Over 18 million people suffer from depres-sion every year. Many never seek treatmentyet most cases of depression or treatable witheffective therapies and medication. When wethink of a depressed child, we often envision amorose child, who is a consistently sad. How-ever, sadness, may not be the symptom thatdefines a depressed child. A study of research-ers at the Columbia University in New York

city reported that bad parenting may put theirchildren at high risk for anxiety and depression.Anxiety and Depression is the root cause for themost of the suicides in India. Farmers commit-ted suicide because of their debt level increasedmaking them to take the extreme step. Stitch intime saves nine is true. If the remedial mea-sures are taken timely then the suicidal rate willdiminish among all. A simple living and highthinking can bring cheer in life all the time.

To get rid of the suicidal tendency, the bestmedicine is to meditate through yoga and winyour heart and soul work according to your com-mands and not to give scope for diversions. Yogaplay a pivotal role and the essence of what youlearnt through yoga come handy when a personhandle sadness or sensitive issue with a mind toface any situation. There lies the success of yogaand yogis and now common people follow the bet-ter way to live a cheerful and happy life.

Depressed teenagers typically give off clearwarning signs through their behaviour. But un-fortunately, human beings are not all that goodat picking up on these signals. These could in-clude changes in sleep patterns and appetite, adrop in social interaction or a reduction in activ-ity level. A smart watch or phone could help de-tect these patterns from where a neural networkcould pick up on them.

The intrusion into the privacy of those whoturn out not to be thinking of suicide or beingdepressed is a frightening prospect. Finally re-vealing and not hiding the problem is the firstand most important step in awareness for anymedical or psychiatric illness. Suicide attemptdecriminalisation in India will go a long way inbringing out the issue into the open and ultimate-ly reduce stigma associated with suicidal behav-ior. The next time a person attempting suicide issent home from the hospital, he/she would feelfree and well equipped to handle problems andnot threatened by the dagger of law hanging overhis/her head.

A parent is a child’sfirst teacher

Everyone of us keep dreaming of birthdays, wedding anniversaries and other special occa-sions. The birthday parties, graduation dinnersand wedding anniversaries are one of the specialmoments that we all cherish and eagerly waitfor. Among youngsters and children, parents alsohave a right to hold special occasions to cherishtheir children up.

Just like Mother’s Day, which is celebratedon the second Sunday in May, Father’s Day,which is celebrated on the third Sunday in Juneand Children’s Day which is celebrated on No-vember 14, Parent’s Day, which is celebrated onthe fourth Sunday in July, is celebrated to ho-nour both the parents — i.e. the father and themother. This year, Parent’s Day is being cele-brated on July 28th.

Parent’s Day is dedicated to parents all overthe world and is an occasion to show apprecia-tion for the commitment to strengthen the fam-ily bond and to create an atmosphere of happi-ness, love and understanding. It is the parents’who mould their child’s/children’s personalityaccording to their inherit strengths, talents and

bequeath to them moral values and the spiritof living life wholly.

Parent’s Day acknowledges the overpow-ering presence of parents in the life of theirchildren.

My parents have always remained the pil-lar of my life, I have never seen them cryingeven in the darkest moments of their life.

Parents play an important and a preciousrole in every child’s life. Utilizing this oppor-tunity, I would especially like to thank mymother because it is only a mother who sacri-fices and goes through a painful journey to raiseher child up. Behind every successful personthere is a mother who is always ready to sacri-fice anything just to see her child happy. Amother is a goddess who goes through a lot ofpain and sacrifices her own blood to give usbirth.

We all goes through many ups and downsand the only people who stand by us and willstand by us are our parents. There are manyrelationships we have in our lives, but they areflimsy most of the times and there is only onerelationship that remains till our last breathand that relationship is what we share withour parents. Parents are the only people whonever step back at the time when we need themand they are always there for us does not mat-ter how difficult the situation is.

My parents are the actual reason for mysuccess in my career and without them I wouldbe nothing. It is completely unimaginable forme to think about a life without my parentsbut there are some people who do not have thisblessing and are unaware of this love whichwe get from our parents. On seeing them, itfeels very fortunate that I have a loving fatherand a caring mother. My only aim now is toprovide my parents with the best of everythingbecause they deserve the best after all suchsacrifices they did for me.

It is a gesture of gratitude for the sacri-fices, nurturing and care, emotional strengthof parents, as they see their children grow upthrough a series of phases and beyond. Not justa provider of material needs, parents also takeon more important roles of a guide and mentorwhich has a salutary effect on their child’s/chil-dren’s attitude and behaviour. This constantflow of positive energy from the parent to thechild nourishes and strengthens the familybond and sustains for a lifetime. Parents havean imperative and indispensable role in start-ing a family, which brings with it a host ofresponsibilities and commitments.

Parents are the most important people inour lives. They bring us into this beautifulworld, care for us with love and care and pro-vide us with education so that we may grow upinto responsible and level headed human be-ings. Nevertheless, we often fail to notice thecontributions of our parents in our upbringingand take them for granted. Parent’s Day givesus the opportunity to thank our parents for ev-erything they have done for us. If you too feelgrateful for having the best parents on earthand want to let them know your heartfelt feel-ings, then Parent’s Day is the perfect time foryou to convey your emotions. Writing a poemis a fantastic way to express your feelings tothem.

I wish my parents ‘A Happy Parent’s Day’on this joyful occasion. May the Heavenly Fa-ther guide and protect them always.
