Memorial Lecture Series:
The Hirouy Kidane Blue Nile Memorial Lecture Series Launched March 2014
Hirouy Kidane was a passionate devotee of Global
Risk Intelligence prior to the formation of the
organization. He contributed enthusiastic support to
the conceptual developments that would form the
foundation of the organization but regrettably was
unable to see them to fruition.
Hirouy was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and
moved to Asmara, Eritrea before finally settling in
Canada. He was fluent in several languages that
included English, French, and Tigrinyan along with
an extensive command of Amharic and Arabic.
He had earned his LLM from the University of
Asmara in Eritrea and had experience working in
competitive international environments. Afterwards,
he attended the School of Government and
International Affairs at Durham University from
2009 to 2010, where he earned a Master of Arts
degree in International Studies. His efforts and talents were then rewarded with a full scholarship
to complete his doctorate in political science in Canada.
However, Hirouy unexpectedly passed away due to an undiagnosed heart condition. He had
accomplished much in his life and lived with diverse experiences and friends. He was a
fascinating individual with an enrapturing and attractive personality that only enhanced his depth
of character and kindness.
The Blue Nile Memorial Lecture Series has been dedicated to Hirouy in an effort to celebrate his
legacy and passion for the Horn of Africa.

Reza Zarghamee
Washington, D.C.: Mage Publishers (2014)

the-persian-conqueror-astride-the-ancient-world/
Reza Zarghamee brings multiple perspectives and
deep knowledge to his account of the life of Cyrus the
Great. Born in London in 1978 to Iranian parents,
Zarghamee grew up in Boston. His immersion in the
ancient history of Iran started early: At the age of
thirteen, he began studying Old Persian cuneiform at
the urging of Professor Richard Frye, a founder of the
Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard
University. Later, he took courses in Zoroastrianism
and Manichaenism taught by another eminent
Harvard scholar, Prods Oktor Skjaervø. He attended
Columbia University, pursuing a double-major in
history and biology, studying Persian language and
literature, and graduating with honors in 2000. Three
years later, he received a JD degree from Harvard
Law School, where his writings included a
comparison of ancient Near Eastern legal systems. Since then, he has practiced law at the firm of
Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP while continuing his scholarly investigations of the era of
Cyrus. His extensive travels in the Middle East have taken him across much of the empire
founded by that giant of history twenty-six centuries ago.
